UE4 still has years because lots of long-term project won't feel that it's worthwhile to port projects to UE5. They may be too late in the process to take advantage of any real improvements there. Or it's just not worth spending money and time to port over. These aren't magic button operations, even if Epic has made it easier to do.

@@Cyrribrae There is no additional cost to use UE5 rather than UE4. It's not like pushing a button and certainly passing from UE4 to UE5 (like porting the already half-completed game to UE5) don't necessarily means any upgrade per se, but the transition should be easy (it's being announced that way by EPIC) and some of the additional features may be added later in the process, so if only for developers to stick a UE5 logo in their games, they will do it. Whether the end product will be "real" UE5 or not, that´s a different thing.

Yeah, we're gonna have to wait at least until the current story (trilogy?) is done for that. They were created to take over Gears of War, their studio name is linked to the series, just like 343 and Halo.
In my opinion The Coalition is now Microsoft's #1 development studio. Everything they do is fluid and polished, Gears 5 is a first class performance in every respect.
@CYVstudio I want to go back on a higher difficulty Brings a tear to my eye reading stuff like this, it does take away a little bit when you are able to play the game on the hardest diff setting right from the start. You have to earn the right to play in the "top tier" IMO.

I don't really remember where & when I heard it, but I thought The Coalition had already confirmed they would be using UE5 for their next project. Not 100% sure, but it seems likely. Ninja Theory are already using it for Hellblade 2 & TC are like the biggest masters/supporters of Unreal Engine tech.

Gears 5 is still one of the best looking games on the market and the feel of gunplay in this game is absolutely fantastic. I'll admit the story has lost some of it's "edge" from the original, but hands down Gears 5 plays best out of the entire Gears of War franchise.
Next gen's only a couple of months old & all we've got is mostly cross-gen ports anyway. Next gen won't show its hand properly for a couple of years, it's almost always the case.
I'm surprised they didn't go into deeper detail on Hivebuster's improved visuals. It looks a step above the XSX patch for the main campaign. In fact, I think it's the best console graphics to date. Even the Dolby Atmos seems significantly better.
Cause DF loves to criticize every bit of faulty details they can find on an Xbox. You can just tell by the tone of their voices in this video, they sound like they don't want those issues to be fixed so they have a reason to criticize it. People didn't just call them out on social media for nothing, it's because of their obvious fanboyism towards Playstation.
The same goes to Game Journalists when they do "Game Reviews" the intro would often start with a momentary Praise to give better first impressions to the viewer/reader, which in turn makes the viewer interested and keeps them watching/reading. Criticism starts piling after that Introductory Praise.

I can not express enough how much I appreciate DF and their work. I bought a Series X to play all the X1X games which were an utter mess of 45-55FPS 90% of the time instead of the SOLID 60. So with DF bringing attention to all this it means there is HOPE that new releases will be running AS THEY SHOULD RUN in 2021+!!!! it IS near 2021!!! Well, Gears was the showcase for unreal engine from the beginning. If they couldn't carry on the legacy, they wouldn't be chosen to carry the franchise.

I wish they would point out 1-2 frame drops on PS5 as well. As soon as XBox game has a tiny hickup John is like "it's NOT A SMOOTH 60 FPS EXPERIENCE, It's bad for xbox BIG TIME!" and then it's repeated over and over again during the tech review. On ps5 games the same issues are kind of quickly mentioned and forgotten 1 second later, and then followed by constant praises from John.
@Mauricio Galvis Rivero Meh. I've seen plenty of games having issues or slight frame-rate drops on the PS5 too. Its not a big deal overall but for some people, its forgivable on the PS5 but blasphemy on the XSX. People just find excuses to hate on "the other".
Whether you like new Gears or not, you have to respect the amount of optimization the Coalition puts into their games and the support they give their games post launch.

I was up on DF long before they blew up due to the console generation change. Fanboys diluted the comment section looking for every one up for their own reasoning despite none having a next gen system smh. They also fuel alot of drama and console wars which is part of their revenue, even though they themselves are not fanboys or at least. It gets them traffic still. Pointing out a few fps difference between cross Gen games for instance is part of their job, but they know well ahead of time effect it has on people.

its funny because majority of games even on PS5 have 30fps cut scenes, even post upgrade. Solid 60 on cutscenes is a big achievement thats not credited enough in this vid.
Since this is a last gen game it makes sense they can keep both fidelity and performance in cutscenes. But I would rather have stellar cutscenes at 30fps than lower quality 60fps if it's necessary to make a compromise
How is this different from Miles Morales, both are expansions to last gen titles but the clueless Sony fanboys claims MM is a next gen launch title while saying Xbox has none.
I'd love to see how Destiny 2 runs on next-gen consoles. Variable res or true native 4k? Does the FOV slider effect performance/resolution? What about the 120hz crucible mode? Really curious how it performs/looks before buying any DLC.
If anything this is the number one piece of software that shows these other third parties that they need to get their lazy shit together. the Sony Fanboys will just throw stupid jokes because they can't back up anything they'll say about this game franchise or the developers mastery of the platform that they're publishing on. I just beat it, yo, coalition... Why tf is gears monster hunter not a thing. I’d pay top dollar to get the gears 5 open world filled with Gear-verse steroid out monsters, make em infected with the swarm of you have to. I NEED MORE. Maybe it could be open world to hunt the monster then it goes into a cave system or something then the game turns linear like gear always is.

6:06 - I really like what Richard is saying here about how the technical press takes games to task. To my mind, beside the point of "no harm in funnelling back to the developer" - the right of reply is a pretty elementary principle for journalistic ethics, and it's good to see Digital Foundry upholding their end here. It's one thing to know that an issue exists, it's another to know what the developer/publisher intends to do about it, or if they even acknowledge it. Pointing out flaws for its own sake doesn't always give a complete picture of where the product is headed.
They only do this for Xbox games because they have a closer relationship with Microsoft. I bet some Xbox devs get annoyed at them but it’s nice to have some entity holding them to task

I think Gears is better than every Sony first party game. Sony doesn’t have a single game anywhere near the polish and enormous size of Gears with it’s best in class graphics, ridiculous particle effects, great story, great campaign, best in class gameplay mechanics and ginormous fantastic online multiplayer component. Literally no Gears game has ever launched broken and the Coalition literally works miracles to get such a graphically intense game to run flawlessly on all platforms from the base Xbox One to the extremely powerful Xbox Series X which was running the superior version until they brought PC up to the Xbox Series X spec recently. Then the most impressive game ever made, Flight Simulator will be on The Xbox Series X in summer of next year. Dude Sony exclusives seem low budget in my opinion compared to how big, robust and complete Xbox exclusives are. I’d never waist $70 on a Sony game you play for a weekend, beat it and never touch it again that’s just flat out stupid. Game Pass is 🔥🔥🔥.........on Xbox I have access to hundreds of games anytime I want for $15 including the huge AAA Xbox exclusives day and date.

Really wanted an in depth look into this DLC it looks like the best looking game out on any platform right now and I am stunned with what they have achieved. This seems like a very quick look.
I don't know if it's some sort of policy Microsoft has for their Xbox Game Studios but they've been listening to feedback incredibly well for the last couple of years: 1) Halo: MCC went from gutter trash to a fantastic Halo experience on both Xbox and PC after multiple test flights with massive community involvement. 2) MSFS2020 had a somewhat rocky launch with wonky autopilot but now performs really well, even on my low-end machine. 3) Halo Infinite getting delayed because of massive critique from the fan base and 343 taking careful steps to turn it around again. The best part is how openly these particular studios (343 Industries and Asobo) share information during the development process, i.e. what features are currently being worked on, what's in the backlog etc., while constantly involving community contributions and opinions. This transparency not only makes you feel like your voice is being heard but it also results in much better games. I truly hope that other studios will follow their steps so that we can avoid messy launches like Cyberpunk 2077 in the future. However, I feel like this (currently) only possible for Microsoft as their value as a company is not that dependant on great game launches as most of their customer base already pays for the Xbox Game Pass which grants them a steady stream of income no matter what.
Is it me or do the DLC graphics look even better then the Original gears 5? I'd also be very interested what a new IP from this studio would bring us 🤔. I feel Gears is a bit of a 'outdated' franchise and doesn't have the appeal to the general gamer eventhough it are outstanding and super high quality games. A bit of a pity....
Great video, but i personally would love to just highlight as i don't think John and Rich talked specifically enough about it - how great this DLC looks. It is a beautiful experience and the Coalition really put an amazing level of detail into what is one of the first next gen feeling experiences available on the Series X so far.
Video idea: there’s a mod for fallout 4 that supposedly drops the resolution to 720p and completely unlocks the frame rate. I’ve used it on my Xbox series x and it runs flawlessly I’d assume possibly above 60 FPS most the time. The one thing that intrigues me is that I didn’t have the “black bars” from the Res drop that the mod says WILL happen. And I didn’t notice any quality loss on my 4K HDR tv. So there’s a bit of a mystery here while we wait for that 60fps series X/S upgrade that bethesda said fallout 4 would get.
This shows how effective Screen Space Global Illumination is as a low-cost technique for GI. It's not even close. RTGI has proven that it can be superior, but at a far steeper performance cost. This implies that the 9th generation will be dominated by this effect. It is no wonder Epic has doubled down on their "Lumen" version of the technique for UE5. All in all, the graphics look great. It looks like a 9th generation remaster of an 8th generation game -- wonderful for the start of the generation.
You're doing great work DF, not only are you letting is gamers know how these games are performing, but you also communicate with the developers and can effect actual improvements, which we are all grateful for.
I truly believe that the work done at DF is a major contributing factor to overall improvements coming to the industry. By putting a spotlight on how important frame rates/times are to an enjoyable experience. I take my hats off to you all. May your excellent work continue to benefit us all. Thank you

@Chris _ well of course it will, most old games are optimized for the older hardware which might not work or cause issues with the new hardware. And it's the same regardless of platform (PC, Xbox series, and PS5)

Gears has been my number one franchise since I loaded the original game back in 2006 on the Xbox 360. I enjoyed Gears 5 on my Scorpio and cannot believe the amazing Series X upgrade.
Beautiful video as always! Just a heads up, the frame issues on that single section on act 4 happened on my original Xbox (VCR model) as well, it made the fps go from a solid 30 to 15 and 20

They've arguably got the best third-looking third person shooter on console, and one of the best playing on top of that in overall mechanics. Hard to beat that.

Yeah, we're gonna have to wait at least until the current story (trilogy?) is done for that. They were created to take over Gears of War, their studio name is linked to the series, just like 343 and Halo.
This game is so well-optimized that it looks and runs good even on the XBOX One. I highly enjoyed Gears 5 campaign.
In my opinion The Coalition is now Microsoft's #1 development studio. Everything they do is fluid and polished, Gears 5 is a first class performance in every respect.

Just finished the Hivebusters campaign and it was fantastic! The Coalition really is Microsoft’s best studio IMO.

I don't really remember where & when I heard it, but I thought The Coalition had already confirmed they would be using UE5 for their next project. Not 100% sure, but it seems likely. Ninja Theory are already using it for Hellblade 2 & TC are like the biggest masters/supporters of Unreal Engine tech.

Gears 5 is still one of the best looking games on the market and the feel of gunplay in this game is absolutely fantastic.
I'll admit the story has lost some of it's "edge" from the original, but hands down Gears 5 plays best out of the entire Gears of War franchise.

I'm surprised they didn't go into deeper detail on Hivebuster's improved visuals. It looks a step above the XSX patch for the main campaign.
In fact, I think it's the best console graphics to date. Even the Dolby Atmos seems significantly better.
Cause DF loves to criticize every bit of faulty details they can find on an Xbox. You can just tell by the tone of their voices in this video, they sound like they don't want those issues to be fixed so they have a reason to criticize it. People didn't just call them out on social media for nothing, it's because of their obvious fanboyism towards Playstation.
The same goes to Game Journalists when they do "Game Reviews" the intro would often start with a momentary Praise to give better first impressions to the viewer/reader, which in turn makes the viewer interested and keeps them watching/reading. Criticism starts piling after that Introductory Praise.

I can not express enough how much I appreciate DF and their work. I bought a Series X to play all the X1X games which were an utter mess of 45-55FPS 90% of the time instead of the SOLID 60. So with DF bringing attention to all this it means there is HOPE that new releases will be running AS THEY SHOULD RUN in 2021+!!!! it IS near 2021!!! And I absolutely refuse to play a game which cannot hold 60FPS on a Series X. HUGE, HUUUUUGE thank you to DF

I wish they would point out 1-2 frame drops on PS5 as well. As soon as XBox game has a tiny hickup John is like "it's NOT A SMOOTH 60 FPS EXPERIENCE, It's bad for xbox BIG TIME!" and then it's repeated over and over again during the tech review. On ps5 games the same issues are kind of quickly mentioned and forgotten 1 second later, and then followed by constant praises from John.

I was up on DF long before they blew up due to the console generation change. They also fuel alot of drama and console wars which is part of their revenue, even though they themselves are not fanboys or at least. It gets them traffic still. Pointing out a few fps difference between cross Gen games for instance is part of their job, but they know well ahead of time effect it has on people.

I'd love to see how Destiny 2 runs on next-gen consoles. Variable res or true native 4k? Does the FOV slider effect performance/resolution? What about the 120hz crucible mode? Really curious how it performs/looks before buying any DLC.

To my mind, beside the point of "no harm in funnelling back to the developer" - the right of reply is a pretty elementary principle for journalistic ethics, and it's good to see Digital Foundry upholding their end here. It's one thing to know that an issue exists, it's another to know what the developer/publisher intends to do about it, or if they even acknowledge it. Pointing out flaws for its own sake doesn't always give a complete picture of where the product is headed.
They only do this for Xbox games because they have a closer relationship with Microsoft. I bet some Xbox devs get annoyed at them but it’s nice to have some entity holding them to task

I think Gears is better than every Sony first party game. Sony doesn’t have a single game anywhere near the polish and enormous size of Gears with it’s best in class graphics, ridiculous particle effects, great story, great campaign, best in class gameplay mechanics and ginormous fantastic online multiplayer component. This is a FULL package game. Name me 1 PlayStation game that has all these components of Gears 5 and executes them perfectly....................didn’t think so. The Coalition is on another level.

You just exposed yourself dude. Gears 5 was never broken at any point and it’s campaign is arguably the best in the series plus it’s graphics are amongst the best on console, even on the base Xbox One it has always run butter smooth. Only complaint amongst the fanbase of Gears 5 at launch was the way the Gnasher felt in multiplayer (which the Coalition fixed) other than that the game has been perfect from day one. Literally no Gears game has ever launched broken and the Coalition literally works miracles to get such a graphically intense game to run flawlessly on all platforms from the base Xbox One to the extremely powerful Xbox Series X which was running the superior version until they brought PC up to the Xbox Series X spec recently.
Then the most impressive game ever made, Flight Simulator will be on The Xbox Series X in summer of next year. Dude Sony exclusives seem low budget in my opinion compared to how big, robust and complete Xbox exclusives are. I’d never waist $70 on a Sony game you play for a weekend, beat it and never touch it again that’s just flat out stupid. Game Pass is 🔥🔥🔥.........on Xbox I have access to hundreds of games anytime I want for $15 including the huge AAA Xbox exclusives day and date.

Really wanted an in depth look into this DLC it looks like the best looking game out on any platform right now and I am stunned with what they have achieved. This seems like a very quick look.
I don't know if it's some sort of policy Microsoft has for their Xbox Game Studios but they've been listening to feedback incredibly well for the last couple of years:
1) Halo: MCC went from gutter trash to a fantastic Halo experience on both Xbox and PC after multiple test flights with massive community involvement.
2) MSFS2020 had a somewhat rocky launch with wonky autopilot but now performs really well, even on my low-end machine.
3) Halo Infinite getting delayed because of massive critique from the fan base and 343 taking careful steps to turn it around again.
The best part is how openly these particular studios (343 Industries and Asobo) share information during the development process, i.e. what features are currently being worked on, what's in the backlog etc., while constantly involving community contributions and opinions. This transparency not only makes you feel like your voice is being heard but it also results in much better games. I truly hope that other studios will follow their steps so that we can avoid messy launches like Cyberpunk 2077 in the future. However, I feel like this (currently) only possible for Microsoft as their value as a company is not that dependant on great game launches as most of their customer base already pays for the Xbox Game Pass which grants them a steady stream of income no matter what.

Is it me or do the DLC graphics look even better then the Original gears 5? I'd also be very interested what a new IP from this studio would bring us 🤔. I feel Gears is a bit of a 'outdated' franchise and doesn't have the appeal to the general gamer eventhough it are outstanding and super high quality games. A bit of a pity....

Great video, but i personally would love to just highlight as i don't think John and Rich talked specifically enough about it - how great this DLC looks. It is a beautiful experience and the Coalition really put an amazing level of detail into what is one of the first next gen feeling experiences available on the Series X so far.

Video idea: there’s a mod for fallout 4 that supposedly drops the resolution to 720p and completely unlocks the frame rate. I’ve used it on my Xbox series x and it runs flawlessly I’d assume possibly above 60 FPS most the time. The one thing that intrigues me is that I didn’t have the “black bars” from the Res drop that the mod says WILL happen. And I didn’t notice any quality loss on my 4K HDR tv. So there’s a bit of a mystery here while we wait for that 60fps series X/S upgrade that bethesda said fallout 4 would get.

This shows how effective Screen Space Global Illumination is as a low-cost technique for GI. It's not even close. RTGI has proven that it can be superior, but at a far steeper performance cost. This implies that the 9th generation will be dominated by this effect. It is no wonder Epic has doubled down on their "Lumen" version of the technique for UE5.
All in all, the graphics look great. It looks like a 9th generation remaster of an 8th generation game -- wonderful for the start of the generation.

Plenty can tell the difference in a few frame drops because it either manifests itself as stutter, or screen tearing or both.
@Chris _ well of course it will, most old games are optimized for the older hardware which might not work or cause issues with the new hardware. And it's the same regardless of platform (PC, Xbox series, and PS5)
Anybody with functional eyes can. Frame drops under 60 show up as judder on your TV, unless it has the new VRR tech.

Gears has been my number one franchise since I loaded the original game back in 2006 on the Xbox 360. I enjoyed Gears 5 on my Scorpio and cannot believe the amazing Series X upgrade.
I would like Raytracing in GOW5. Could be a nice Raytracing Showcase as Spiderman on PS5.

Just a heads up, the frame issues on that single section on act 4 happened on my original Xbox (VCR model) as well, it made the fps go from a solid 30 to 15 and 20
