Not just as a guitarist, but as a person.. I've heard was one of the nicest people ever.
There is a story Brian May tells, that he saw Gallagher before he was a professional and accosted him, to ask him questions and gain some knowledge. He spend a solid chunk of time to talk to him just after a concert, where I imagine all he wanted to do was take a shower.
Then, when May made it big with Queen. Again he bumped into Rory... He spent exactly the same amount of time to talk to May before and after he had gained worldwide fame..
    What a bloody lovely guy...

He's definitely not underrated as an underrated guitarist. I wouldn't say he was underrated at all, anyone who has heard him recognises him as a master. He is today a bit lesser known, he's been forgotten about by a lot of people today. (Not be me, nor by most on here I expect).

I can say that Rory is an extraordinary artist. Is the guitar hero that is loved from people that doesn't play guitar. It was his attitude, the songwriting and his dedication on the instrument. A man without a family, dedicated to his music and to the people that followed him.

Gallagher performing Shadowplay live at Montrose in '79 is perhaps the greatest 10 minutes of pure rock 'n' roll righteousness ever put to tape.

Fully agree. It is pure Rory- his interaction with the audience is great. He never saw himself as an unapproachable rock god. That Shadowplay clip is definitely one of the greatest rock n roll pieces of all time. Gerry Macavoy also kills it, absolute monster on the bass.

Rory is an absolute hero to those of us from Belfast, Taste got their start in the Maritime Hotel Belfast (where Van Morrison and Them also started.)
In the 70s when nobody would play Belfast Rory always played at least once a year and even in the late 80s this shows were seldom less than two and a half hours (so no surprise his strat neck had to be hung in his mother's shed for 6 months to dry out.)
He was a great acoustic player too, and the show always featured a few songs with teles and a Danelectro.
We are still trying to get a statue of Rory erected outside of the Ulster Hall (where he always played.)

Rory was such a lovely man. 😊🤍
He treated people so kindly and never seemed to turn down an interview. The most popular one on TH-cam, people made statements of Rory looking high when in reality he'd just finished 3+ hour show. He was still sweaty, dog tired and the interview was done on stage, but he gave detailed answers packed with passion to all of the questions. It's just terrible he died in his 40s, before I could see him live myself.

Rory was a force of nature. I cannot think of any purer self expression and commitment to an art. His commitment to touring and playing to the audience transcended his savage musical skills. He lived his life on a journey, powered by his love of music. The complexity of this shy man, who lived on stage, and hibernated in private. A hero of music.

Well done to you sir for introducing people to rory gallagher, people who might not have heard of him without this video, the 2 albums you chose tracks from (photo finish & top priority) are in my humble opinion his best studio albums. Hearing rory's music as an irish kid was mind blowing and absolutely inspirational to think an irish dude could make a guitar sing like that. Rory Gallagher is the reason I picked up a guitar at 10 years old and 32 years later I will be forever grateful to the G man's music for leading me down the road of life as a musician, the people I meet, the towns I see, the roads travelled, the good/bad venues, every second of it treasured and worth it. theres always a few of rory's songs on our setlist every night as a mark of respect and admiration,

I remember reading in the Melody Maker a report at one of his gigs, the reporter was quite shocked to discover Rory drinking in the bar next to the venue, before the show, without a bouncer or security in sight.
I was lucky enough to see him live a few times and he never failed to entertain and amaze. Outstanding guitarist. A cliche often used but in Rory's case, his guitar really was an extension of his mind and body.

Rory was incredible. I saw him live in his prime and his electric playing was so intense, it was mesmerising. Next thing he would pick up his acoustic and play a solo set without his band, with harmonica in tow, but the intensity of the performance never wilted. Back into his electric, before rocking out with his mandolin on ' going to my own town'. He even played a damn good saxophone on his solo album. There are guitar players who play the blues because they want to, or maybe because it might be a good career move and there are guitar players who play the blues because they have to. Rory was one of the latter. I reckon that is why he could never take up with the stones, or indeed Deep purple, who it is rumoured had an interest in him as a replacement for Ritchie Blackmore. Gallagher had to play the blues to an audience who had to hear it. Arenas, Stadiums with pyrotechnics, dry ice and the rest was not his bag. He was a blues man, the real deal and he is still sorely missed by his fans. He also had a lovely humility about him, thanking his audience after each and every song for coming to the show. A very unique talent

I could listen to Shin Kicker endlessly. Something interesting I heard was that he actually had more acidic sweat that wore down the guitar even more than usual, and in turn, affected the sound. There's a famous interview with Jimi Hendrix, where the interviewer asked him "how does it feel to be the best guitar player in the world?" Jimi Hendrix replied, "I don't know, ask Rory Gallagher!"

Depends on where you’re getting the information. Hendrix has also been rumored to have said, that Billy Gibbons was his favorite player.
Then there are those who say Hendrix always said Terry Kath, was the best.
I’m inclined to believe he mentioned all three and many others, who he was into, over those few years, as Hendrix didn’t like talk about being named the greatest by anyone.
Do you know who interviewed Hendrix, when he said “ask Rory?”

Some of my favourites are A million miles away, For the last time, Bad penny, Shadow play, Philby, and especially, Walk on hot coals. I was listening to the Irish tour '74 album about 2 hours before I found you had gone and done a video on him. Legends, he and you both!
Edit to say that "the glory of rory" is indeed a great name for the playlist! Additionally, I should urge people to delve even further into his catalogue from the tracks mentioned by Justin and myself. There are tons! He is especially great live so any love footage- watch it. His live album, "Irish tour '74" is one of the best live rock albums you will ever hear. A true masterpiece. I could go on, but instead I'm gonna go listen to some more of his music. I heartily recommend you do the same, you won't be sorry. Unless you dislike awesome blues rock of the absolute best kind, that is. Thanks, and enjoy!

Gary was a great guitarist no doubt, but for me his true calling was in the classic rock genre. I was never convinced by his blues playing. He had all the chops, but he lacked the authenticity that Gallagher brought to the craft. There are players who, for whatever reason want to play the blues and those that have to play the blues and nothing but, with little choice in the matter. For me Moore was one of the former and Gallagher the latter.

He was a major influence for me as a young player and for those of us who grew up in Europe we understood why a street in Paris was named after him. Live he was beyond. To say he connected to the audience would be an understatement: he channelled the audience. He was one of a kind. There will never be another Rory.
