As I was watching your video while folding laundry, my youngest came in and peeped over to see what I was watching….he said, “Is that your cooking lady?….oh wait, that’s your garden lady!”…..lucky lucky us that you are giving us both ❤❤❤!!
Just so you know, I had bought the 2 pack of 1 pound each yeast at Sam's around 1999. I also keep it in a jar in the freezer. It is still working even after all these years! I've also moved 4 or 5 times and had several power outages. We used to bake bread rolls and cinnamon rolls often but it seemed like once I bought that much yeast, we sort of stopped baking so much. Seeing you baking today has inspired me to see if this yeast is good today. If it has finally given up the ghost, well I can't really complain about my $4 yeast from 25 years ago. I'm sure it will be fine as it's only been about 3 months since I used it last. Happy birthday to your son.
Jess, I think you might want to look into Melissa K Norris's master dough recipe. I learned about it in her book Home Made. You can make the dough up to 2 weeks ahead of time, there's no kneading and you can then turn it into a bunch of different baked goods, including cinnamon rolls. I love it. Saves a lot of time and a ton of mess.
Going with this suggestion, back in the 90’s there was a cookbook called “Bread in Half the Time”. The premise was to use your microwave at a low setting with a cup of water in the back to help distribute heat evenly. I remember making Parker House rolls from scratch in something like 50 minutes. It might be worth finding a copy, particularly for the bake sales.
I've become a convert to overnight dough rising - the flavor is massively enhanced. No need to change the recipe, just do the bulk rise in the fridge overnight. In the morning, roll it out and it'll come to room temp quickly so you can add the filling and go from here. Much faster too, for the hungry boys!
Thanks for inviting us into your kitchen again. My youngest son watched the video with me and has now requested cinnamon rolls for his birthday breakfast 😂 I hope Toby had a great birthday! Doesn’t it feel nice to make the littles their favorite foods? What a sweet mama ❤
Cinnamon rolls are a Christmas tradition for us (and other times, too) but I like to get them ready in the pan the night before and let the 2nd rise happen in the fridge overnight. Pull them out in the morning and let them warm up while the oven preheats. Then you have a quicker breakfast. Less work in AM, which is especially nice on Chrismas morning. 😊
Jess, have you ever tried creaming the butter, cinnamon and brown sugar for the filling??? I hated the process of trying to spread that really dense filling until I started whipping it. It spreads like a soft buttercream at that point! Way easier and doesn’t mess up the filling to dough ratio!
Happy Birthday Dear Toby!! 🎁🎈🎂🎉❤️ It has been an honor and a privilege through your family videos to watch you and your wonderful brothers grow up into such amazing young men!❤
I prepped these yesterday and baked them this morning for breakfast to kind of celebrate our last day of school before spring break. I’ve never made homemade cinnamon rolls because it’s the last thing I wanted to take time to make. These are amazing! Thank you so much for this video and this channel! I have always hated cooking, this channel has made me start to love it and find things in my fridge to use in a better way. We bought property 1.5 years ago, so now are starting to raise and produce our own food, and this channel has been a lifesaver. Thank you for creating it (I came over from your first channel).
Happy, happy Birthday, Toby! Those cinnamon rolls look SOOOO good! What a lucky guy to have a sweet Mom who makes him cinnamon rolls for his birthday. Thank you, Jess. I'm inspired to make these, especially since I've started grinding my own wheat berries...🍞🎂
I made these late yesterday and enjoyed them for breakfast this morning. My first ever attempt at cinnamon rolls. Thanks for walking me through the process!!
Happy Birthday Toby! Those look really good Jess! Just a little tip - I roll my dough, butter them, sprinkle on the sugar and sprinkle with cinnamon - I have even done with melted butter. Now I want a cinnamon roll!!
I bake cinnamon rolls weekly at a coffeeshop, the first time I ever did this I intuitively mixed the butter with the cinnamon sugar before spreading, and got a really funny look from the lady training me. She said essentially (I don't remember her wording perfectly): "honey, we do it differently here", and went on to explain that it's easier to spread the semi-melted butter on first and then sprinkle cinnamon sugar after. Having done this since I can say it is a good alternative method! Though if you try it, do NOT fully melt the butter (my next training misstep), you're looking for a thick ranch consistency of soft but not melted butter. Room temp and then microwaved for 10-20 seconds does the trick for me.
❤ Love the brown sugar/molasses tip. I have had mollasses in my pantry for years with the intent of copying my dear grandads early morning routine before bringing in the cows for milking.... ie. Light the wood stove, take butterknife, turn it on hot stove top, dip said knife n large molasses jar n twist to form a big blob, put in mouth n wash down with a big cuppa 😂 bless him, I still miss him since his passing in the 80's😊 He swore that it kept him v strong n healthy. Thx Jess. Could have saved myself a trip to the store today. Much love n many blessings gorgeous girl. ❤
Happy being twelve years old Toby. I am convinced that I miss cinnamon rolls, and yet I know full well I've never eaten one! I do love watching people make them though. Laughed hard at the goat wrangling too, sorry, but I just know what having livestock is like.
0:26 i love the cozy background and your sweet smile . just started the video, i was down with pain and 30 seconds in I find this so comforting. Today food vlogs have movie like set up , love the real deal its refreshing , comforting and very heart warming
I'm glad you now have the recipe in your possession! Since your video about not being able to find the recipe, i now always print a recipe. If I end up not liking it, I'll just toss the recipe in the recycle bin. I'd rather not risk not being able to find it again if I do like it!
This video tugs at my heart. I have 7 boys and they bring me so much joy! It's such a wonderful gift to get to watch them grow into men. Happy birthday, Toby! My Toby is 19 now.
Our Christmas morning tradition is orange rolls. This year will be homemade orange rolls, thanks to this tutorial. I may need to practice a little before then.😉
Hi Jess🤗 I bought active yeast in bulk at the beginning of the pandemic, but usually I make sourdough bread and other recipes from my SD starter however, I wanted to make this recipe so I took my active yeast from the fridge and expected it to be a flop. To my surprise it was very active!!! It’s been about four years so if you leave it in the refrigerator and put it back asap it should keep well! By the way this is a great recipe. Thank you so very much from New Mexico Jess❤️😊 Happy Birthday to you Toby 🥳🎉👏🎊🙌🎉
Happy birthday! Great that the icing has no cream cheese as I don't eat that. I never knew I could substitute the cream cheese for butter. Here traditional icing is simply powdered sugar mixed with water to a gooy mess and put that on, that that will harden when it cools/dries out.
loved Toby saying thank you back and starting to say Happy Birthday back to you. I always tell my children I'm the one who remembers the day they were born and I celebrate more than they do. What a wonderful recipe. Looking forward to trying it
I use half water and half milk (warmed of course) to proof yeast with my cinnamon rolls. The milk makes the dough SO tender. I think I need to make some soon. Great vid - thank you!
Also a chef store (I still call it cash and carry) yeast buyer - I use the freezer for the main bag, and a small gasket jar in the fridge - but dude - that yeast storage jar!!! So cool! I can’t believe that gets tucked out of view in the freezer! 😊

Happy 12th Bday to TOBY! He has grown into a preteen right in front of some of our eyes!
You guys do an amazing job raising the children!

I need to look this up! Thanks!
A GOOD RISING TECHNIQUE: Boil a cup of water in the microwave, then put the dough bowl in the microwave with that cup of hot water. Works every time!
Yes, this is a great suggestion! And very easy to do.
Are you saying mix the hot water in, or just set the dough in the microwave next to the hot water?
@@_modvaultnext to it
@@_modvaultumm just set it in the microwave with the water beside it. The warmth will help the rise
