    Gavin is definitely one of the very best for a very simple reason: just like many others, he has great technique, speed, etc. and a pocket tight as hell, BUT what really makes a huge difference is his musicianship: this is something found in about 1/1000 of the drummers.

    • @WAYMAKER_MEDIA_LLC
      @WAYMAKER_MEDIA_LLC 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I was literally just saying this to my friend like 5 minutes ago. I showed her łshe's not a drummer) and I showd her his 19 days live performance and then showed her Eric Moore to show her the difference between how they approach a song. I said, "Gavin could probably play everything Eric Moore is playing, but can Eric Moore match Gavin's emotion on that 19 days performance.
      She said this was her favorite and I said" I could honestly see why this would impress you more, because you have to be a drummer to understand that 19 days is far more complex than this.
      Gavin changed my whole philosophy of drumming by #1 his playing and then #2 hearing him explain why he does certain things.

    • @walterrserrano

      @@WAYMAKER_MEDIA_LLC Very well said! And about your reason #2, I really need to watch more of his workshops and interviews.

      @@walterrserrano he is literally drumming genius... Hearing him talk will change your entire approach, focus, and own unique sound using. I love that he uses simple methods like displacement, rhythmic design, and says what he notices, other drummers aren't really paying close attention to, like what he calls 'over-riding"
      That is VERY complicated technique and he just uses technical skills of musical application in drumming and uses those things like he says in one interview that he loves to play a pulse on times in odd time signature a lot of odd time signatures so, they fell like they're in 4/4 and people can enjoy them , because he wants there to be some musical reason behind what music he plays, he doesn't want people just to look at him as idol or something by proving he can play in 11/16 and the sound all jerky and it's obvious to drummers it's in an odd time signature, so he wants them to be able to just enjoy the music.
      He also says he loves taking songs in Bonnie The Cat in 4/4 and making it feel like it's in an odd time signature, and it is ALL based on displacement of the down beat.
      He is just a music philosophers and you can get lost in heat he's saying because he's just SO unique in many different was from today's drummer and drummers in general.
      Check out his interview , they are really dope.

    almost forgot this video. the beginning and the 3:22 part sound just so fucking good, as always. the reason why Gavin Harrison is a very skilled drummer is because he really knows how to play musically and he has good taste in terms of sound. But at the same time, he has a wonderful technique. he just doesn't overuse it and that is very wise.

      MJKTool He is using some subdivision, keeping in mind the tempo, but using other mesures. For example, in 4/4 you have 16 16th notes, so you can play 5/16 + 5/16 + 6/16 and accenting the first 16th in each of these mesures, will give you a complete different sound while keeping the 4/4 once it's over! (or at least I think he did this)

    • @turdhat
      @turdhat 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a variation of what he plays right at the start moving around accents to his bells. The sticking is the same.

    • @bertilverbaarschot6004
      @bertilverbaarschot6004 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MacDrums, I listened closely and counted, and i think i figured out the basic pattern. First of all, the keyboard pattern continues as before, so the whole length is 4 bars of 4. Then, counting Gavin's feel to what he plays, i counted 1-2-3 (5x) and 1-2-3-4. Next, listening to his bass drum pattern, it actually proves to be 1-2, 1-2-3 (5x) and 1-2. So there's the recurring pattern! The bass drum plays 1 te2, 1 te2 te3 (5x), and the pattern ends with 1 te2ah, before crashing into measure 5. But if u count it as 1 te2, 3 te1 te2 (5x) and 3 te4ah, then u notice the snare gets hit on every "2". Writing it down like that, i next listened where the 1 of the keyboard bass line is played compared to Gavin's ongoing pattern. It's on the 1 of bar 1 to start with, and then it turns out to be played simultaneous after every 5 beats. So there it is: it's a quarter note quintuplet pattern, that is subdivided as i described. To make things more complex, Gavin plays 16th notes instead of quarter notes, and his sticking consists of a repeating pattern of 12, that is just partially played at the start and at the end.
      Now if someone can figure out the sticking pattern, then i think we have solved the puzzle.

    Old School Jazz Fusion, a la Billy Cobham (another GREAT drummer), Return to Forever, and George Duke. All of which featured wonderful drum tracks and drummers. Literally, music made for powerful and creative drummers. More than a Porcupine Tree, for that matter. (Which I love).
