This guy. He's as precise as you can be as a drummer, yet groovy as fuck and not the least little bit of sterile in his playing. His musicality and versatility is outstanding.

I've been a Ludwig drummer for 30 years. With that said, (Deep breath) these are quite possibly the best sounding drums I've ever heard, especially his snare! Man that was so easy to say I'm scaring myself. This guy rips so hard his timing is impeccable his pocket is perfect his groove is flawless. Watching him play makes me feel like I need to go to Toys r Us and buy a Hello Kitty kit and start all over.
A big part of his sound is his recording process. He uses 24 tracks for one drum take and about $50,000 worth of microphones. When I found this out I gave up trying to record acoustic drums and bought a Roland V-Drum kit instead.
@@JALNIN66 In this, there's SM 57's on the top and bottom of the snare - $99 mics. His sound is all in quality drums, proper tuning & his technique. I'm sure if you, me or anybody else sat down at his kit, it wouldn't sound exactly the same.
Ah indeed he is a top musician and a sound engineering guy ;) that's not simple to find in the same person. Skilled as a few ones, I even prefer him to Simon...which makes of him the best drummer in the U.K. IMHO
Had the pleasure of seeing Gavin doing a clinic in the mighty Drum Depot drum store, in Cardiff, Wales few years back, unbelievable player and even got to meet him after the show, very down to earth cool guy. Very inspirational! \m/
The thing about Gavin's playing is that it's powerful, disciplined, and virtuosic for sure, but those drums and the real-time production of their sound is absolutely perfect. I'm not sure that any other drummer in prog-rock can put it ALL together like he does. Thanks Gavin, incredible as usual👍
This guy joined an already awesome Porcupine Tree and made them sound even more awesome! Even now his drumming with King Crimson And The Pineapple Thief are sights to behold!
Agreed. The only drummer who could come close to the excellence of Gavin is Bill Bruford. But Gavin Harrison is still my favourite drummer in the music biz today!
I say that after watching a bunch of guys like Marco Minnemann, Morgan Agren, Baard Kolsted, Danny Carey, Ben Shanbron, Portnoy and others....Everytime, man, he's the best, er... no, he's the best...er, no, he's the best...But Gavin can definitely play with the best of them.
Maybe becuase it was added late? Gavin said he came up with it with the intentions playing it for drum clinics and the rest of the band said it was too good not to make it an album record
Progressive rock never did it for me, I found it to be on the academic side, but since watching this mans work I am curious to explore. Thanks for opening the door 👍🏻🙏🏻🥁
lol fair enough, but there drummer does some 'hard' and interesting stuff (his fusion and jazz stuff is quite good), but Gavin Harrison is better, much better, one of the best.
+Agent 00Awesome is by "underrated" you mean "not appear on the big media like the others" you are god damm right...he is in the same level (if not superior) to Mike Portnoy, just to mention one... ^^
+Rafhael Jaques I don't think he is unserrated per-se, because everyone who watches G.H realizes he is a beast...I'd better say he is unknown. Btw, I don't think Mike Portnoy even scratches the skill Gavin Harrison has haha
I bought his book Rhythmic Illusions and it opened my mind about so many things. If you make the exercises the way he described them, your thoughts and timing will be on a whole different level. It's unbelievable to imagine what he thinks while playing.
That’s it. After listening to thousands and thousands of drum video, I finally can say, that it’s by far, the best fucking sounding drum on earth. It’s just ridiculous. Thats snare is like a fucking gunshot
@@shimmuus no come on... The amount of coordination and technique that Gavin's groove takes is far more difficult than bleed. He variates the right hand and he also puts ghost notes on the snare

I think that Gavin is vastly more skilled that Peart, and I say this as a lifelong Rush fan. But the reason that Geddy, Alex and Gavin would be really interesting to me is that Gav was not even remotely influenced by Peart. You hear none of it in his playing. As opposed to, say, Portnoy.
I was smiling from pleasure watxhing him playing up until extended version of the outro. When I stopped smiling and realized that it was not making me smiling anymore.
Mr.Harrison really gives Porcupine Tree legitimacy. Stephen Wilson is a gifted song writer and performer but to have this man in the band brings it up to a super group.
I read "Drummer Gavin Harrison playing flute"...
He's a beast, great fills and never boring!
agerom , I've always read correctly, but from now, it becomes flute... ahahahahahah! thanx buddy
i read "Drummer Gavin Harrison slaying fruit"😁
Me too!
are you lysdexic? LOL

And the award for world's best snare sound goes to
Carter Beauford on 'Don't Drink the Water' 1998?
Lars Ulrich throughout the whole St.Anger album?
@@emilerpel8342 yeah my favorite one lol 😂

This guy and Bill Bruford of course!
Probably the best drummer of all time.... considering his music intellect, which makes him better than most of the drummers out there.

er!!...Steve Gadd??

Billy Cobham?! Carl Palmer?! Neil Peart?!
Sound of the drums and cymbals is gorgeous -- absolutely perfect.
So fucking tight. Insanely good!
Great technique + great audio technicians = great sound.

never seen a play style quite like this. so precise, musical, & unique.
Everytime I see Gavin Harrison play, there is a smile on my face! He is the pinacle of drumming
He straight up plays the Meshuggah - Bleed kicks towards the end there. Absolute machine
Herta thaaangs!
That is some sick percussion work. In all my years of playing I never even got close to this kind of technical and rhythmic ability. Bravo.

I just cannot watch or listen to enough of Gavin Harrison's performances - he's just absolutely superb.
Unbelievable talent Gavin...Awesome and inventive Drumming.🥁
This is one of the greatest drumming performances I've ever seen. 10/10
The way he played, and the tom tom sound is awesome!

Who on earth would give this talented drummer a thumbs down - seriously wtf! This guy is genius.
It's silly to argue who is 'best.' Clearly it's this guy. :)

One of my absolute favorite drumming perfomances. Not sure if I have already commented on this in the past. I don't care, I love it!
That fucking snare ghost note tho...... damn!!! This man is as precise as the atomic clock and as groovy as Jaco Pastorius playing funk jazz!
Well said 👏
A drum god. So good. My absolute favorite drummer. Very technical but with such great feel.
According to Harrison, this song was inspired by Meshuggah.

Insane musicality on the drums!!
That snare sound makes me wonder why the hell I am playing a 14"!!!! Hands down my favorite drummer!
Is that a 13" Sonor? Do you know which model?
Gavin Harrison - Little known factoid: He was born on a distant planet known for its rhythmic prowess.
He came from Andromeda to chew gum & melt faces on Earth. And he's all out of gum

My favorite drummer on earth since the first day I heard him. So fuckin good 🙌🏽
The most tasteful and dynamic fills and probably the best sounding kit and cymbals you could ever hear …
I would love to see a Mangini vs Harrison record but Gavin is always the one for me for being as humble as he is a great drummer.
Gavin numero uno, gli altri nessuno!🤘🏻
It’s just surreal. As drummers, there are many greats, across every genre, but Gavin sits above them all
