    I had a Raleigh Road Ace 1984 with the AX groupset for my 18th birthday in December, used it as my time trialler and broke the hour in 59.24 during the 1985 season. Best bike I ever owned!

    I've stumbled across this video because I wanted to do some general research on my bike and I was absolutely amazed to find out, that there is a video about it! I'm as much in love with the Road Ace as you are and I really enjoy every ride with this gem. Thank you for that video and lots of love from Germany

    Bought one of these brand new in 1988 from bob trotters in York. They were reduced by £150 to £300. The best bike I ever had. It was a thing of beauty.

    I have a 1984 Raleigh 531 that I purchased new. Raleigh sponsored our racing team, I got it for 1/2 off. It has Campy 50th Anniversary groupo. Same bike that was used in the '84 Olympics.

    The 1984 also had the gorgeous 600AX brakes. Still, yours is absolutely stunning. I remember climbing on 52/42 & 13-21. Not these days!

    My first race bike was a new 1984 Raleigh. I had the next bike down the range from the Record Ace, the Competition 12. It had a 531c frame in an amazing Iridescent green. Groupset was the cheaper Wainman mostly.

    Fantastic !!
    Great bike.
    I have an '85 Road Ace, which I mentioned before. In 1989 I was after buying a new Road Ace but the shop I was going to didn't have one in stock. My budget was £500 and I thought that would only extend to a Road Ace but the shop had a Record Ace (653 tubing and Sante groupset) for the price of a Road Ace, so I bought that and still have it !

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lewis72 mate I know the bike 👍I had the Sante group set in the day! Loved it, it sat between the 600 and the dura ace. You have a lovely bike there. I was nearly buying one the other day, but the whole thing had beer stripped and was working out to much. All peal white nice mate 🚴

    • @lewis72
      @lewis72 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks.
      I only recently found out that Reynolds 653 wasn't a specific tube but a mixed tubeset of 753 & 531 (as far as I understand) !

    • @lewis72
      @lewis72 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers !
      The bike's hanging up in my garage right now. It could probably do with a refurb. and I have a NOS Sante headset to replace the dreadful thing that a bikeshop put on it to replce my original Sante headset that got notchy.

  • @oibal60
    @oibal60 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I bought mine back in 1982. I found the Shimano index to be good but I swopped in a Campagnolo Nuovo Record instead. I also changed out the brakes to Weinman Carerra. The bottom bracket I swopped in a FAG sealed unit. I still have my Mavic GP4 rims. I used this bike to cycle from Dublin to Belfast and back for the 'Co-operation North Maracycle' (late 1980's). Well, here I am 62 years old, on Long Island NY, and my Raleigh Road Ace (tweaked) is in my garage and I still use it!

    Such a classy beauty from Raleigh. I owned the earlier 84 version which has the "aero" 600ax groupset. Like a fool i sold the frame years ago but to this day i still have the full 600AX groupset(inc bars&stem) stored in my shed.

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and sharing you Bike. I know the groupset it’s one that hasn’t appeared on these videos yet. It’s probably one of the rarest groupsets out there to be fare. Thanks again all the best Andy

    • @leehyson9831
      @leehyson9831 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BikeItUK Thanks for replying. Yes the AX has the funky centre-pull brakes, massive/weird oversized pedal axles and some rather unique cable routing for the mechs. The front mech moves in an "arch"....( a bit like Sram's YAW front mechs). I certainly think the 600AX and Dura AceAX were way ahead of their time. Cheers.

    Just found this TH-cam video. Got me inspired to dust down my old 531c Joe Waugh frame built by Dave Yates, built about 1984. When it was new it had Campag Record group set. Its just the frame now, how hard is to source group sets for old frames. Local bike shop not interested in helping because it not plastic. Plan on doing some TT on it at the grand old age of 59

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +neil mason Good for you and thanks for the words of support! The Campagnolo c-record group set brings a Premium anything up to a grand. I recently did a Colnago Master Piu and mixed it up with old callipers and 11 speed Potenza groupset the bike rides like a dream. Good look with the build I generally find most of my parts on eBay! Hope this helps all the best Andy

      I second that. I wouldn't be able to part with this beautiful machine. I own a 1982 Raleigh Record Ace with all of it's original components and I love it. The Road Ace is a couple of pounds lighter. My bike has the old Suntour Ultra 6 freewheel with a leg friendly 14/ 28 ratio. I would struggle with your Road Ace's close ratio block but it was a proper racing bike as opposed to a sports tourer. You've done a brilliant job in restoring a superb machine and I hope you enjoy many miles of happy riding.

Carbon kineses fork ,wheels I built, Mavic pro rims, 28 hole Dura ace parts except camagnolo friction right side shifter and Shimano left. Cinelli bars and stem , model 64x44cm.

    great video. The Raleigh bikes of the mid eighties were very good. I had a Raleigh Ventura new in 87. Shimano 100 gears which I think became 105, the 600 series became Ultegra I think though I could be wrong. Bought this for £220 which I thought was a lot of money, probably a couple of weeks wages back then.

    Hi Andy,
    Love the vintage riding gear with the 80's Oakley's :) Although you needed a cleat block on some 80's Sidi's and the Christophe straps pulled up extra tight for that vintage knee pain and the feeling of being trapped on your bike.

    Nice ! This Raleigh reminds me of my first road bike that was a Red Raleigh Super Record a friend of mine sold me the frame in spring of 1986. I built it out with Miche 700c rims and hubs campagnolo brakes and bottom bracket and Chinelli handlebars and stem and a Chris King head set a Concor saddle & a Shimano Ultegra seat post and front and rear derailleurs . That Raleigh road bike was one comfortable fast sweet ride ! Good old double butted Columbus tubing road bike frames, nope they don't make em like they use to any more !!

    This video was such a great find Andy as about to start a restoration and rebuild of my Dad's old Raleigh Road Ace! The only thing I want to change is the tyres (maybe wheels) to accommodate something a little bigger, making the bike a bit more suitable for more regular town & country use. Just bought this bike from a guy in Nottingham Andy.
    Loving it but can you advise of what colour/type of dye you used for the saddle please. The guy I bought it from had "re-dyed it again for some reason & now it's way too dark.
    No worries if not.
