I think the choreography of the fight succeeded in that it didn't look choreographed. It looked as though it might have really happened -- a struggle between two trained opponents that got out of hand. Well done. The most unrealistic element for me was that they both seem to have abandoned their Feders. I would not have left mine. They're too difficult to replace. But then, I expect you decided that would be more dramatic. Something of a loss for both, but at least they escaped with their lives.
In a world where HEMA is based on an illegal fightclub systems feders are mostly illegal, too. The Police was comming and they had no bag in range to put them in. And I don't want to be catched by the police with an illegal weapon on the run from an illegal fightclub. Better to be catched on the run from an illegal fightclub without my illegal weapon^^
Awesome vid. In fencing it can sometimes be difficult to tell when a hit was made. The sound effects really made that clear and obvious, which was a good directional decision.

This should be used as a reference for all movies with 'historical sworfighting'.
A longsword does not weight 20KG and it can be swung pretty quickly.
I know its just a film, nice choreography btw, but why is there so much drama about fighting with feders? I mean it´ll hurt but i doubt that you can kill someone with those swords, unless you do a murder strike to the head or hit them repeatly at the head in general. The whole underground thing would be much more intense if they were fighting with real swords to almost death but this looks more like a parody of itself, which is a shame because it is a really good idea. Especially while they are fighting in full protection gear, it looks more like an ordinary sparring session with two guys who can´t stand each other :D
well go ahead and makes something better then. No ? That's what I thought.

Why? I like this film, it is well made and has a very good choreography. I just don´t understand the drama about fighting with blunt training-swords in full protective gear. That´s what I do for fun every week in my club.
I respect this film as an artwork in itself, I just want to know why they went the way they did. Maybe you guys can tell me more instead of being so butthurt about it, maybe I missed something like they are fighting for a hell lot of money and the protagonist is trying to pay the medical bill for his ill sister or something like that. There is so much tension building with the dramatic music but I don´t exactly see the drama itself. Are the swords supposed to be sharp?
As you can see, sharp swords or not, the context is an illegal underground fight, with "spectators" that probably bet money on the fighters. You can imagine it happens in a time/alternative reality where HEMA fighting is illegal. Hence the dramatic effect, the chasing by the cops, etc. It doesn't matter if the swords are sharp or not; the 2 fighters are here defending their honour and "underground fighting reputation".When people fight in illegal underground boxing, they risk injuries, but they don't risk death, yet they still get extremely aggressive and violent. It's the exact same here. It's not about the risk of injury or death, it's about the context (illegal fighting, people betting on the fighters, their reputation, etc).

you just used your own personnal feeling about swordfighting (a fun weekend activity as you say) that you can't even try to imagine it taking place in a different context, which clearly shows a lack of imagination. Just imagine a world where the underground boxing fights are replaced with HEMA, that's it. People would have the same behaviour as they do in underground boxing.

I love the choreography, but I'm just curious about the one flaw I discovered at 2:37, where the evil fencer goes into right Ochs (and the good fencer moves his sword to parry it to his right side) and just in the next shot he is in left Ochs (and the good fencer parrys to his left). Is it perhaps because between the shots the evil one made a Durchwechseln, and this was cut out from the scene? Thanks for explaining.
Hi. Thanks. About your question. The whole duel was cut and reordered by the editor. Some parts are missing, some are in a different context. And maybe the logic of the duel seems to be flawed but the look was more important for him.

Aragoth DarkSky usually standard 1600N fencing masks (though there are some specialized hema-masks). Just with a mask and back-of-the-head protector to put over.
Is HEMA like illegal to gamble at your area or something because the middle of the video had police coming over.
well when u leave ur gear, deny the ref telling u to back off and start swinging at the audience, it becomes assault with a deadly weapon
I don't think gambling over HEMA fights is illegal anywhere. You missed the point, I think. I believe the point is "what if illegal boxing matches didn't exist, and we had illegal underground swordfights instead ?"
