    I 100%%%%% relate to your story... I am in the process of applying for Ph.D. program and I feel all of the thoughts and feelings that you described. It's so comforting to see your videos. Also, you helped me to write my Ph.D. SOP and I gained strength and courage to carry on. THANK YOU

    Latina, first gen here and i've been working on my graduate school personal statements here and there, on and off for the past three years and I feel so intimidated in beginning, I don't have resources or mentors but this channel, thank you. I haven't really been watching your videos though because I'm too scared to even start (I also hold a stressful full time job not related to my major), I feel like I'm under qualified and time is running. I really want to go to graduate school.

      It’s a confronting/vulnerable process to apply to grad school but there really isn’t too much to lose. Even if you don’t get in, you will gain more clarity on where you want to take your life and what is important to you. However I find working with a lot of first-gen, people of color, is that they are often qualified enough or more qualified than they think, it’s just the self-doubt from a society that constantly devalues our existence, where we always have to prove ourselves, that gets in the way. I would recommend going for it and getting support from people around you. I have a group of cheerleaders in my life who see me in a way more positive way then I see myself.

    Dear Lauren, is it possible for you to provide us with an example of sop in natural sciences such as astronomy? I make use of every piece of advice you give. However, I cannot implement most of the advice you give to my own sop. While I'm interested in Astronomy, I don't know in what way I am going to solve kind of a problem. So I can't think of a compelling reason for my interest.
    Thanks for all the help.

    I'm a first gen student and I feel overwhelmed. This is my second week of college and I feel like I won't be able to keep up. Balancing everything is hard and I feel sad. I am watching this video as a cite for an English 101 work sheet.

      Know that you are not alone. This is a super common experience. It will get easier. It’s also okay if you mess up and start with bad grades. There is plenty of time to improve as the years go by. I suggest looking for mentors or support from your network or college. Many colleges have programs like where you get partnered with a mentor or resources for helping adjust to school and mental health and self care resources. Overall don’t be hard on yourself. It’s something many people go through and it gets better over time. Check out my video on imposter syndrome for my ideas on how to improve your mindset when you are feeling this way. th-cam.com/video/g_h3k8TMEto/w-d-xo.html

    Hi Lauren!
    If you are applying to a school you have been following since years and getting into it is like a dream. Can you mention that in your statement of Purpose ?

    • @LaurenValdez
      @LaurenValdez  ปีที่แล้ว

      yes but it should be relevant to why you are a good fit for the school, rather than just boasting about how much you like the school
