  • Reading a Statement of Purpose from a student admitted to Stanford, Harvard, and UCLA for Masters in Education programs.
I read the before version of the essay and share the feedback I gave the student. Then I read the final version of the Statement of Purpose.

Hi Lauren thank you for sharing this person chasing his dreams and being successful. This video made me cry because you and this person are very hopeful that you can change this world for the better. I wanna tell you my story very short. I am Turkish and graduated from a top college in Turkey(bilkent) where I studied international relations with 50% scholarship. Since I was 12, I have suffered from depression and social anxiety and my condition peaked when I started studying at college. I worked hard and wanted to be successful but was extremely anxious and depressed throughout my studies. I finished with 3.58/4 which is okay but my grades gradually got lower as I approached finishing the school. I graduated tin 2020 and since then I don't really know what to do, I lost hope that I will get better. I want to keep studying because my parents aren't in a good financial condition but I can't find hope that it will get better. Watching this video and listening to this person's statement of purpose, their life story, their hope for making the life better for himself and his community made me cry. You are making these videos to help students and you help students by coaching them. You are also full of hope. Can you make a video sharing tips to shift your perspective as a student when you lose hope and feel like things won't get better. Or maybe give some tips on how we can change perspective when we lose hope as a student? Thank you so much ❤

Hi Lauren, thank you so much for posting this and I've learned much more than I can say from your feedback. One thing I'm confused about is that this SOP looks really 'personal' and previously I thought SOP should focus on my research plan, questions I'm pondering on, etc. Can I write a SOP like this if I plan to apply for a research-based education program?
