Thank you Ruth, my Father was a Scotsman from Falkirk, he fought in WWll in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. Even though my parents immigrated, it was their second marriage each of them and they had me and immigrated to USA in 1965. My father retained his Scottish accent and often would recount to a mouse, and I have given his Robert Burns book with the tartan to my oldest son now who is 38. Thank you for this podcast. ♥️♥️♥️ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This was my favorite video of yours of all times. I am a retired English teacher, so of course I enjoyed your Burns trail, and I even learned a few things about him I did not know. The most amazing thing is that they play Burns most famous song at the closing of shops??? That's crazy! My daughter and I just visited Alloway in November, 2024. We viewed the birthplace and the museum, and took the Burns path, but we really ran out of time before we had to catch our train, and did not get to view the gardens. Now I am sad that we traveled from Edinburgh instead of staying in Glasgow so we would not have had the nearly 3 hour train ride and would have had more time, We did that though, because we visited in November, and all of the highland tours we wanted to take from Glasgow were not available. Now I see, though , we only took the first part of the Burns trail, so we will be back to go to all the other places you mentioned, especially his grave and the Globe. It would also be fun to stay in the boat you rented in Glasgow, and journey from there. I can't believe we missed that lovely painted tunnel in Alloway, but I can highly recommend the soup they had in the gift shop. Thanks so much for this wonderful video and tribute to Burns on his birthday. Take the small donation to either feed Ernie, or by yourself a small amount of your favorite adult beverage.

Yes, Happy Burns day (yesterday). Here in the south of England I had a shock on the way to visit my dad. Turned into a side street and I heard that familiar screeching sound - then saw a piper outside a pub! In the pouring rain, no less!
But I'd argue that Burns wasn't really born into poverty if his family owned their house. I was surprised when Ruth arrived and said this long building was his house. OK, makes sense that they had animals housed there are well - pretty normal I think. But if you could afford to move because your family got bigger, in my view that means you are at least comfortably off.
Whatever, Ruth has reminded me SW Scotland is on my bucket list of areas to visit. I've spent a bit of time on the east coast up to Edinburgh - but not enough - or just headed up the A74 from the border. So I need to turn left at Gretna and explore :)

My grandparent's were from Saltcoats and they immigrated to Detroit in the late 1920's. My Grandfather would recite the toast to the Haggis at all Robert Burns dinners here. My cousins, grew up in Alloway just a stone's throw from that cottage and the oldest was married at a venue that overlooks Brigadoon. I have a photo of myself at age 10 standing on that bridge on my first and only trip there. The icing on the cake, is one of my Mom's cousins claims we are related to him. That I still need to research. Anyhow, I will be sharing this with my Alloway/Ayr cousins and my oldest son who hopes to come to Scotland for the 4th time this year with his family.

In my town we boast our own literary heritage that includes a mysterious poet who only signed his work with the letter H. He was only a little younger than Robert Burns but his poetry is very much in the style of Burns even though our best information is that he was a Londoner who emigrated here during our frontier era. It’s wonderful how an entire national character can be embodied in the work of one genius. Happy Robert Burns Day to you.

Happy Burns day Ruth. Nice to see you in Dumfries. Growing up there as you probably know, we are steeped in Burns law. "Robert Burns: A Life" by Ian Macintyre is a great read. There was so much more to him than most folks now. His work collecting and editing folk songs in Scotland was hugely significant.

Good morning Ruth. Just calling in from Nz. Thanks for this presentation about Robbie Burns. Loved it. Although I had to use subtitles to figure out what the first gentleman was saying, at the beginning of your presentation. It was tough going. And like a lot of NZrs, I have Scottish heritage. My grandmother came from the village of Crieff. Not sure how many kilometers that is from Robbie Burns location. However thank you again for sharing this episode. Take care, and all the very best, from down under.
