This time I'm attempting to reach Scotland's easternmost point. Over the past year, I've visited Scotland's southernmost point and northernmost point.
The Out Skerries, Scotland's easternmost point, lies only 164 miles from Norway and consists of three main islands and a few smaller islands. Join me as I head to this remote Scottish island and visit another of Scotland's extremity points.

WHO AM I?
If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!
P.S. Some of the links in this description are affiliate links that I get a kickback from.
Can I make you jealous? As a child of 7 I visited the Lighthouse when it still had keepers! We spent a month on a Whalsay, my father was the locum doctor.
Ruth -- it's great to see tourism and sightseeing where it's not crowded, where the visitors are respectful and in awe of the sights as well as the chance to see them, and the locals are welcoming and appreciate respectful tourists. So many "popular" places these days are over run with disrespectful and self-centered visitors, it is no wonder that the locals dread 'tourist season.' You are not only a great ambassador for the little-visited parts of Scotland, but a very good example of how to travel respectfully.... Thank you!!!
Thank you very much! I find it crazy that everyone flocks to the same places… there are so many incredible places in Scotland without all the crowds. This video was filmed in July too, peak season!
@@ruthaisling -- A week ago I was on vacation in the Finger Lakes of New York (I live in MD -- about a 6-hour drive away) on Canandaigua Lake, with my oldest daughter and her family (grandsons age 3 and 5) -- at the end of the peak season. And yep -- every rental lake-front cottage was rented, the local restaurants were very busy, and the typical tourist spots were full. I vacationed there as a kid *MANY* years ago a few times every year (many relatives in the area), when it was nowhere near as busy -- so there is a lot of nostalgia and it is my 'go to' place -- yet I could definitely do without all of the people! On the drive up I had found some very out-of-the-way places to stop and shoot photos -- a few covered bridges in Pennsylvania, and an 1813 octogonal stone schoolhouse. I was the only one there at those places and yep, that felt nice. So there are quiet, unbusy places all around us, if we take the time to look -- and they can be just as fascinating as the busiest places....
Love your channel and all the wonderful Informationen on it. My late mother came to live in Germany in 1962 and built a home and family there with my german dad. But she never forgot where she came from which was Glasgow in her case. She always felt that true and deep love for her country of origin and ones in a year traveled to the Highlands and beyond and knew so much about her fantastic homeland. She would have absolutely adored and eaten up your channel. Keep on doing what you're doing....
That's so lovely to hear that your mum would have loved the videos. Do you ever come and visit Scotland?
Yes I actually do from time to time since my brother lives in Balfron near Stirling wirh his family. I also have a cousin living in Edinburgh with her fanily. I'm planning to do a trip to Scotland with my camper van in the not too distant future. Filling my bucket list using your videos...
@@seildrive2927I’m glad the videos are providing inspiration!
Thanks for taking me to places I will never be able to see in person.
Thank you so much for watching the videos!
It’s great to hear the captain’s amazing Shetland Scots on the ferry. As a Gaelic speaker I love to hear Scots too!
Fabulous accent!
Thanks for letting us tag along with you to Shetland Ruth! Such a beautiful place. Your look of alarm when told that people get sick on the ferry "all the time" was priceless! Glad you made the journey unscathed
Oh good. This has just appeared as I refreshed my TH-cam home page, just as I'm about to sit down with a cup of tea 🙂
Lovely! I hope you enjoy it!
It is 2:00 am on September 1, 2024 in Tokyo.
The weather is bad here because of the typhoon.
I enjoy watching your videos.
怖いですね! 気をつけてください。
I hope you are safe - wonderful to see people from all over the world enjoying the same things.
I am ashamed to say I had never even heard of The Out Skerries. Thank you for taking us all with you. It looks very interesting.
I hadn’t heard of them either until I searched for Scotland’s easternmost point!
Well, Ruth, you've shared so many lovely places that so many of us will never see in the flesh; and I'm comforted that you enjoyed it so much when you were there - even if the orcas and otters stayed out of your view this time. As for sea-sickness, you're faring a lot better than I would - so very well done to you!
Maybe I’ll see the otters and orcas someday!
Thank you for taking us on another wonderful island adventure.
Thanks for watching Nigel!
What a beautiful place to visit. Thanks for taking us there Ruth!
Thanks Stephen!
You are making me homesick Ruth, this is we’re lived till I was 8 yrs old and it will always be home, both my parents were born there and I can trace my family living there as far back as my great great grandparents.
Ruth, you live in paradise, and I'm ever so glad that you share your journeys into these lovely islands. The serenity and peacefulness is like pure heaven. I'd be reading books during the colder wet weather times, but what you're doing, by trekking around the islands on foot is exactly what I'd be doing.
Ruth, it was great to see you tourism and sightseeing. What a beautiful place area in Scotland. ❤️ 👍 🏴
Hi Ruth thanks for all your Scottish island trips. The highlands have some fabulous places with fantastic scenery. 👍👍👍
Ruth has an infectious joy in her adventures of discovery; very much like a child experiencing something wonderful for the first time. It is a beautiful attribute. I have ancestors who were Scots, that is how I discovered this channel. I subscribed because of the quality of the presentations.
Thank you 🙏
There are SO many buildings, bridges etc that I’ve been able to spot from the Shetland TV show 🎉and they’re just as beautiful this time around and with your history and enthusiasm it’s amazing 🤩 Thanks for sharing!! 🇺🇸❤️🏴
Lovely albeit lonely place, are the Out Skerries, Ruth, and I couldn't believe that spectacular sunset! One thing occurred to me immediately --- the North Isles are definitely for Summer trips, only. You would NOT want to find yourself in the Shetlands, or even the Orkneys, in the wintertime --- with direct exposure to the North Sea, Winter on the Out Skerries must be absolutely beastly!
Well Ruth you are out in the “sticks” wow and so lucky to have a lovely day with no wind for some of your walks. The ferry price from Lerwick is very reasonable, I see they lashed down your van on the return trip, Stugeron party maybe?? Hoho😂 lovely video with so much info, well done again. Cheers Mike 🥃🥃👍👍
Thank you Mike 🙏
Fabulous Ruth, I Absolutely love what your doing, taking us to places where most of us will never see, thank you, these far out Islands are truly amazing and that scenery is breathtaking, keep them coming ❤️ 🏴
Thanks so much Robert! Really glad you enjoyed this video! ❤️
Thanks for letting us experience the lovely places.
Another fantastic video Ruth Thankyou so much 👌🌹🌹
🥂Steve🥁🧡
I loved so many thing that you covered in this video. My favorite was that we got to see a calm, clear weather day alongside its contrast.
Ruth,im so glad i found your channel.Im a mancunian with a scots dad, stranraer born. After many years in Spain i am now back in the UK with my teenage son who put me onto your fabulous tours around what i consider home, Scotland. You are a joy to watch, keep on with the great work, muchas gracias y besos! David and Zack xxx
I've mentioned previously that instead of motion sickness/anti-nausea pills try ginger capsules (also help quell an upset tummy). The Gravol brand offers Gravol Ginger. I use these or generic ginger brands found in the vitamin section of chemists/pharmacies and larger grocers. The upside? Ginger capsules are less costly and there is not drowsiness. They are also effective for quelling vertigo, which I have had three times and in all instances rather quickly overcame with ginger capsules.
I love your videos. Scotland is a wonderful land and you do a marvellous job of revealing the often harsh but beautiful reality.
You have carved out a very interesting lifestyle young lady, and more power to your elbow! Greatly appreciate you allowing us to tag along.
You are so welcome!
@@ruthaisling Thank you Ruth for taking the time to respond to my comment. Always enjoy your podcasts, and even more the way you go about things! A real Can Do! Attitude, you’re a winner young lady.
God, Always , with you.
Hi Ruth, thanks for the entertaining presentation of Scotland. I have been curious about the nature of your home country. Great that you make such nice videos about it.
Still no otters to see? I have otters near where I live 70 degrees north in Norway. My experience is that they can only be seen very early in the morning. Sometimes during the day in very bad weather. They are smart and shy. They stay close to fresh water sources. In winter I see where they are by the tracks in the snow, in snowy weather I can also see when they are active. Fresh tracks are always in the morning.🐾
I just adore your channel, Ruth. You are so lovely and talented, and you do a wonderful job of showcasing the beauty of your country.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much! I’m very lucky and I never take it for granted 😊
This world needs you….please never change x
Loved it.Because of you we get to see the places we only dream of visiting. Regards from Malta
Great videos Ruth, Onwards & Upwards👍👊👏👏
Was down your way this week (I work in Logistics)
Departed from, Glasgow - Rockcliffe - Dundrennan - Kirkcudbright - Gatehouse of Fleet - Castle Douglas - Creetown - Newton Stewart - Stranraer - Glasgow.
Beautiful scenery all the way👌
Rockcliffe, was my favourite, you can reach out and touch the Solway Firth, stunning.
Take care young Lady, look after yourself 😏🇬🇧🇬🇧
Rockcliffe is very nice! I love the coastal walk along the cliffs there!
A very interesting trip indeed!! A fact filled tour of some beautiful islands of Scotland. You do an amazing job with these video episodes! Ruth, I’m so glad I discovered your TH-cam channel, I learn a lot about beautiful Scotland (and other places) through your narrative and shared knowledge. Of course it doesn’t hurt that your photography and videography (including drone piloting) are top notch! Excellent!!👍👍😃😃
Many thanks for your support!! 😊
One day, Ruth, you will see a family of Otters playing in water! Thanks for another beautiful video.
Fingers crossed!!
Thank you Ruth. Lovely video ... and how nice to see a well-kept island where abandoned cars (and other scrap metal) don't prevail. (Mind you, there was one broken car - a Subaru Impreza WRX! Obviously ideal transport on an island with 1 mile of road!!) All best, John Pinfold, Cheltenham, UK.
Great presentation of your country. Six generations ago it was my family’s country as well; I’d like to get a glimpse of it myself. Your videos are an A+ introduction to Scotland.
Thanks in advance for the video. You're a lovely person i'm glad to watch your videos. Ever since my Mam died nearly five years ago i've been dealing with uncontrollable grief but your videos make it easier. Thank you Ruth
Stay strong as time passes it will help. My Best Wishes. A. R.
Your content is amazing Ruth. Great for escapism. Scotland is such beautiful country.
As a person who absolutely loves to solo hike extremely remote trails that are not crowded, with incredible scenery and views of mountains, beaches and forest, I really cherish your videos and can't hardly wait for the next one!! So many, many good suggestions and ideas. I'm retired now and travel all over the world looking specifically for places that most people never heard of and are very remote and even hard to get to. I can see from your smiles and enthusiasm and excitement every time you hike a remote beautiful trail. I am just the same! I would strongly suggest hiking in New Zealand. You can't take your campervan, but just for a getaway to a different part of the world. No snakes, bears, wolves, mountain lions or anything else to worry about. Hiking is called tramping there and trails are called tracks. Highly recommend the Lake Waikaremoana Track on the North Island (very remote) and of course the Kumano Kodō hiking route which weaves through the mountainous Kii Peninsula, south of Osaka, Japan. Very remote. You'd love it! 😄👍🌏🥾🥃🌲⛰
Loving your videos, and enthusiasm of all that you encounter, people, places, plants, views, weather. There is a joy in small things on Islands which you really communicate. On the otters: I remember one night anchored in amongst small islands on the west of Luing, my friend had been hoping to see otters all week and as we enjoyed a sunset rather like the one you had there, sun going down over Mull, he saw his otter. It did make him very happy. One day your otter will come!
Another fabulous video, the islands looked lovely and peaceful.
Thanks for taking us along with you.
Always enjoy your videos. You get me excited about Scotland.
So glad you enjoy the videos!
I just love the places you take us Ruth, it's been such fun to see so much of Scotland because of your trips. And you are The Best tour guide 😊🎉❤.
First thing first well done and Big congratulations on Hitting over 110K,
You be over 200K by Christmas,
Ruth's back. 😃
Hello hello!
Absolutely love these videos of yours, beautifully filmed and presented so very well! I’ve visited Scotland many times, numerous trips to Barra, Vatersay, Eriskay, The Uists, Harris, Lewis, Islay, Jura, Skye, Mull, the Kintyre peninsular and the Highlands but always staying in holiday homes. It’s great to see all the new areas you’re visiting, the Orkneys and Shetlands look stunning and I am seriously thinking now about buying a camper and exploring the rest of it! You must one day get over to Ireland and continue your adventures filming there!
Wow you’ve been to so many places!! I like travelling by van as it’s more affordable. I’ll definitely visit Ireland sometime in the van! I’ve even got my Irish passport! ❤️
Another great video, Ruth - thanks. I'm actually trying to get round all 128 of UK's inhabited islands (currently on 67), whenever I'm back in the country. These two are on the not-yet-visited list!
Thanks for sharing Ruth, you tempted fate, by saying it wasn't windy or raining 😉 on your first day. A lot of interesting information, about the islands. Enjoyed the video.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Hi Ruth, I'm thinking of having you as our local 'weather shamen' you certainly seem to bring the sun with you !!... great vlog , full of great information and your infectious enthusiasm, safe travels, Neil.x
Thank you Neil! I’ve been quite lucky with the weather on my trips this year. Sometimes I wait a day or 2 if I can ☀️
Absolutely brilliant video yet again. You have inspired me to take my family hiking in Scotland and see that beautiful scenery.
I have to say : for someone who lived overseas for twelve years u get quite easily exited in your present channel.
I traveled a lot across Japan and been to Shanghai . I don't get easily impressed anymore😝.
How do u maintain your enthusiasm ?
Greetings from holland
Shetland - land of my fathers. Great video, reminded me of how beautiful the place is.
Hi Ruth, your channel has given me a whole new perspective on Scotland. One thing that worries me is try and be a bit safer, caves and bothy's on your own isn't a good idea in this day and age. Stay safe x
Hope you enjoyed your visit to Skerries. This is my home, I grew up on this island, and take my kids there every school holiday. They have so much freedom. Love Skerrries there’s so much history and culture. It’s a shame you missed the otters. There hasn’t been so many seen this year in Skerries.
Your kids are lucky to visit every holiday. Do you miss living there?
So jealous! Beautiful spot well presented!
.....yes ALL 3 of the remote island episodes were EXCELLENT presentations, certainly your best so far!.....
Thank you so much 😊
Another lovely chapter in your Scotland chronicles. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! Have you been to Out Skerries?
@@ruthaisling Have not. Looking forward to plenty of Shetlands time on our next trip.
Class video ❤ I love seeing Scotland through your videos 🏴
I hope you get to see otters soon! We get so many here in Puget Sound in Washington state. Both river and sea otters. Thanks so much for sharing your adventures in Scotland. Someday I’ll get to see where part of my dad’s family came from there in Edinburgh.
Ruth I sure am loving theses island adventure they are all beautiful and unique in their own way always plenty to see , I love watching our river/ lake otters here in Ontario Canada they are comical really. Thanks for taking us , You didnt make it to the lighthouse but you had a wonderful view of it.
Just got a new TV and decided to wait until it was installed to watch this. Was definitely worth it.
Great video again Ruth I was in Scotland last week got the Ferry from Belfast to Cairnryan then drove to Glasgow. Next day went to Oban and got the ferry to Mull came back to Oban and drove to Glencoe and back to Glasgow then back to Cairnryan to Belfast and drove home to Kilkenny. Beautiful Scenery.
Sounds a great trip! But a lot of driving 🚗
@@ruthaisling yes about 1,500 kilometres
I would love the solitude. Thank you for this tour.
Thank you for the great video! I can’t believe that the electricity comes in under the water!
You do such wonderful job. Really enjoy tagging along . Thank you!
Of you draw a line south from Scotland's most easterly point and another line east from Scotland's most southerly point, the 2 lines cross near Hartlepool. Maybe you should visit.😄😄
Another wonderful adventure! Thank you!
I went to those Islands as a kid. I remember it very well also remember the ferry crossing being choppy as hell 🤣 Another great video Ruth 😍 Thanks
What great memories to have! I had such an amazing trip😍
Excellent upload as always Ruth,
Bloody brilliant,
Fantastic Thumbnail,😉👍
Great Vlog again Ruth “taking “ us to the Out Skerries with you. I didn’t even know they existed. Loved the ferry trip with you going up to the wheel house. As usual you explain everything so well from the history to exactly what you are experiencing, along with your excellent video footage. Two shops for so few residents amazing. The islands look beautiful with stunning scenery and you seemed to have picked lovely weather to showcase it apart from the following day. Oh wow the ropes to cross to the other side of the island are an incredible way to cross and you were very wise not to attempt it alone. What a beautiful sunset you saw, I was willing you to be able to see the otters, one day hopefully. How unique was the boat building, clever use of a boat. Well Done Ruth again a wonderfully produced and presented vlog Thank You for Sharing.
Absolutely stunning. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us.
Hi Ruth: I feel like I am a broken record, at the risk of repeating myself. Another wonderful video. Great introduction to the Islands and all that they have to offer. I fear that with the lack of businesses, soon no one will be there. Seems so remote. Thank you. This video has only been released six to seven hours ago and there are hundreds of comments. WOW!
Love your country. Love your accent. Love your channel. We have otter exhibit at our local natural science center. It’s a most popular exhibit. They swim. Then they take to land. Shake off. The kids love them!
Great video as usual. Thank you so much again for taking us away from the usual tourist haunts and discovering those parts of Scotland sadly less inhabited. How lucky you were to get the good and bad of the weather in 2 consecutive days... Can't wait to see where'll you'll take us next...
I can't wait to explore the Northern islands. I've loved watching all your adventures up that way.
Glad you’ve enjoyed the videos. You should go!!
We seen an otter walk right past our van only a few feet away near Ness of Sound coastal battery where we spent the night, just past Tesco on the south side of Lerwick. Very exciting, spent the rest of the holiday trying to spot another one. So they do exist 😊.
Thanks for taking us along your grand adventures.
That sunset was stunning! 😀
Another great trip! The Shetland Islands are so very beautiful. I so hope one day you get to see the illusive otters! They will probably surprise you somewhere you least expect it.
Very beautiful surroundings, and nice and quiet
Another great blog Ruth. Never heard of the outer skerries so thank you for enlightening me. What a wonderful place. These islands are so wonderful and the community spirit must be uplifting.
Keep up the great work and stay safe.🙏
Watching this while working on Shetland (Papa Stour). Now working my way through your other vids. You have quite a likeable personality.
I think Shetland gets overlooked by travellers heading to Orkney, it's such an underrated place.
Thanks for another great video Ruth. Love the way to go to the more out of the way places and always find something interesting about them. That sunset was amazing by the way !
I love your island hopping videos. One day you will see an otter 🦦 We’re counting down til we return to Ireland with a short break in Scotland. Such special, beautiful countries. ❤
I don't know how I missed this one! I wasn't recieving 'All' notifications but I am now! I don't know if you've watched newbie Iona Passport but the pair of you are quite obsessed with seeing an otter & she too thinks they don't exist 😂 Neither of you have any luck! I love your island trips Ruth, I long to vsit Orkney & Shetland and I really hope I can get a campervan again, I had several when I was your age but now they are so expensive! Can't wait for your next island trip xx
I understand that comments are important on TH-cam. However, notwithstanding, I'm fascinated by your accounts of Scotland. I've just discovered that two Scots people fascinate me with their artistry in hugely different areas. I've only been in Scotland the once, and then I had to embark upon a bizarre adventure in Africa. I missed a great deal.
The other Scots person is Nicola Benedetti, engaged in a vastly different art. That said, your videos are, indeed, art -- and not a less important one. There's talent involved. It's unlikely that the Government will ask my opinion, but your work is worthy of an honour.
Another great video Ruth, you certainly take us to some remote places in Scotland, which i would not think off. These places are so beautiful as well, sorry you did not get onto the most easterly island, but you were close enough and that’s what counts.
Till next time safe travels Ruth.🏴❤️
Thank you Ruth. Believe it or not, I’m watching your channel in 34 degrees centigrade in south eastern Spain. Personally I prefer the cooler climes but my wife likes the heat. Still, Spain does produce some nice wines. I enjoy the islands. Keeps me sane.
Enjoyed that, go out to St Kilda you will appreciate that even more, in fact, we all will. Been diving twice there so I can recommend it. The islands around it are spectacularly full of sea birds, and the highest sea cliffs in the UK.
Beautiful sunset! Thank you for sharing and taking us to your trip. I hope you continue to have a safe trip!
Thank you, I will 🙏
New jersey outdoors adventures 1.3 million views and incredible mobile homes etc...enjoy the channel Ruth 😊
Hi Ruth, finally got to watch your latest video. Great as ever! I never tire of these videos. Keel the vids coming 😃
Glad you like them! More coming soon…
I really enjoyed this video, Ruth...I am really hoping you see some otters soon, they are very elusive....I love you...
"To prevent seasickness, you can take ginger1234. The recommended dosage is between 1 to 2 grams of ginger at least 30 minutes before boarding a boat1. Alternatively, you can take 1 gram of encapsulated ginger root powder one hour before travel and again every two to four hours as needed2. The University of Maryland Medical Center advises taking 250 milligrams of ginger three times a day, as needed for motion sickness3. Ginger is more effective than Dramamine, a drug commonly used to treat motion sickness, at reducing nausea"
Thanks Ruth! Watching your adventures is always a time for me to find some peace and relaxation.
What a stunning place, i will visit Scotland one day. Love your videos ruth, thanks for sharing.
Hi Ruth, my Scottish Sis! Spectacular video; beautiful scenery and what fun!
I would love to live in fabulous Scottish for a few months!! Blessings
This looks and seems such a lovely quiet peaceful place ☺️ thanks for sharing Ruth I've been on a few islands but not as many as you have 😊bless you stay safe lol from me in Birmingham
Thanks Paul!!
Ruth, I so enjoy your travelogues.
You’re showing us places that I’d love to see in person, but may not have the time to do so.
Wishing you well, and interesting journeys.
