- A quick "how to" on registering your electric bike as a moped in the state of California.
This is for bikes that come with the street legal kit or have had street legal mods done to the bike.
Needed by law:
Headlight, Taillight, front and rear turn signals.

All information below is information from the DMV website.
Also known as a motorized bicycle, a moped has 2-3 wheels and an electric motor with an automatic transmission that produces less than 4 gross brake horsepower.
Some mopeds have pedals so you can ride them when the motor is off. Show Citation 33
You must have a motorcycle license (M1 or M2) to drive a moped.
You must be at least 16 years old or older to drive a moped, and you must wear a helmet while you ride.
You do not need insurance to register a moped, but you do need special license plates and an identification card, along with a one-time ($26) registration fee.
(However you need need insurance to ride on the street)

first attempt year ago denied, really appreciate this walkthrough sir!! loving your whole bar/mirror setup btw
Thank you SOO much for this information ❤❤❤
Thank you, most informative...
Thanks for this. I've been working on how to reg my Ultra and your method is waaay simpler then my route. Btw where in CA is this? If youre in the bay maybe ill see you around!
ayo thanks for this i live in the OC and the dmv has been busting my balls about it. Good Looking. 0:25 i know that area, that was like south Brookhurst in HB. We do group rides in the oc you should join some time. 5:59 the homies Razor battery died at that gas station. Small world
If your getting a surron ultra bee from USA and you stated not to out surron, what do you recommend on putting?
Thanks , got my plates . Now i need parts to make it street legal. Do you have any idea ehat ill need for a eride pro ss . Thanks in advance
Hi, does the form require a regular driver's license or motorcycle driver's license? Thank you!
Also can you legal ride a moped in OHV areas? Like Carnagie or something, or will the ranger have something to say about that.
Thanks for the video! Do you happen to have any information about registering the Ultra Bee (Alibaba) as just an off-road vehicle? Like for a green sticker in CA.
if you bought it online and didn't get a vin im not sure how you would be able to register it, but i've brought my Ultra Bee and Talaria Mx4 to a few different SVRA and OHV parks and they've never asked for a sticker
hey where did you get those mirrors.
So at the end of the video you said you don’t need insurance. However I read your section you typed out and you stated that we need need need insurance to ride on the road. I’m slightly confused. Also what insurance do you use on your ultra bee?
What section stated that? I didn't see that at all?
First thank you for the video this was awesome. I am trying to register my stealth bomber clone that I built myself, but it doesn’t have a Vin number…. I don’t know if you read these, but if you do any thoughts on how to proceed?
Search Google for the answer
Donyou need turn light?
Thank you for the video of this is was very helping, I'm about to do the process by your guiding but the only thing I'm trying to figure out is the price to put on the check, you said it's $26 and on the website they say 23$
so I'm trying to figure what amount should I put on the check, if you or anyone else have any idea I will appreciate it?
Go by the official DMV website pricing
Current dmv website -- $27
Great video. Will your normal car drivers license work? Or do you need an m1 license?
M2 or m1 license
In Ca you can have a class c and ride a moped or scooter up to 150cc anything over is considered a motorcycle and you need a M1 license. You cant use anything less than a 150cc anymore on the skills test thats why they updated the law. To be safe I would limit the speed and power of the bike if you could and leave the speed limiter on if you want to register it to ride on the road without getting harrased by cops.
Just purchased a Solar Eclipse this past week (top speed 60mph, top range 75miles). Process looks straight forward. To clarify, do I also need to obtain an M1 or M2 license or is the process that you shared sufficient enough? Lastly, if I opt to insure my bike is that also possible as a moped? I live in Orange County if that matters. Appreciate your video and any thoughts on my questions. Thanks
You need at least a m2 license.
I preordered the new v2 eclipse and it meets the requirement of no bigger then 50cc and 30mph in eco mode which is all i want so ill be doing the same
Also did you get any luck with it as a moped?
@ghost31elite83 yep, not an issue. Registered and insured. Very easy process. In the process of getting my M1 License so I am fully compliant.
@@OneExecProducer Hell yea
You do not need insurance to REGISTER a moped. REQUIRED to ride on the street.
Also, You must have a motorcycle license (M1 or M2) to drive a moped.
Hey you're right! Thank you for adding that information, I added the info into the description and will make an edit to the video.
How much is the renewal fee?
my registration renewel for my new tesla m3 was 890$🫣
That’s more than what I paid for my dually this year
@@dantheman6931there is no renewal fee
One time registration $23 fee. Was just on the DMV website
It is absolutely insane that California will let you legally register a non-moped as a moped. wtf?
They don’t allow it at all. This is totally lying to the dmv (which is illegal). To be fair I did this whole process on my bike and haven’t got pulled over so do at your own risk lol
Its insane that you have to lie to ride an ebike. Wtf? Gas only?
@@KingFriday274 It's not a bike, it's a motorcycle. Stay off road and you're fine, operate on the roads and you have to comply with the same laws as any other motor vehicle. It's not a birth right...
@@KingFriday274 a surron is far from a 20mph ebike.
@@jackfetter You're saying motorcycles shouldn't be on the road? That's stupid.
Light Bee has 6 kW of electric power which equals ~8 HP, so it's over the limit. Max speed ~45mph. So Boxes 3 and 4 of Section 2 should be NO. Likely won't be approved if properly filled out. I spend the money and registered my Ultra Bee in FL through dirtlegal, which allows me to sleep at night.
I'm sure you know this but all of this is illegal, just you signing that form when you clearly know it doesn't have pedals, isn't under 4 HP and certainly not limited to 30 MPH. Will this get you a plate, sure but at what cost, any accident or even getting pulled over may result in it getting impounded or worse, you charged in the event of an accident (and certainly not insured for damages, since you lied on the form to get it registered to begin with). I'm sure you know this but it's worth mentioning for others...
Sounds like you voted for trump and ultimate Karen 😂
@@zach85j Grow up dude. It's a valid comment, nothing about what I said isn't true nor anything the OP doesn't likely already know. Frankly, both sides need to be understood so children like you don't flip off the cops when you whip out your falsified registration, only to end up impounded, and walking back to Mom's house...
@@zach85j Lighten up dude. Nothing I said was wrong or offensive and I suspect the OP knows all of this is true as well. @@entertainmentWeekly19 you sound like a little boy, especially the way you drop emojis like its an extra topping on your childish insults
Shouldn't need to register it we all need to stand up to the dmv and tell them to screw off we have every right to ride on the road without a license because we own the roads we pay for the roads we're riding in pursuit of happiness
