    WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

The term you're looking for is "victim blaming". The snake oil didn't work not because it's flavored sugar water, it's because you didn't have enough faith (no refunds!)
      Divine hiddenness isn't omnipotent/omnibenevolent God's fault, it's because you're not humble enough.

On the one hand, theists (usually christian) will say god requires faith to believe in him and have a relationship with him, and on the other hand, they deride atheism as requiring too much faith, as if faith is actually a bad thing to have

    • @klaxoncow
      @klaxoncow 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

This is the weird cognitive dissonance that routinely happens.
The theists - as you say, usually Christian - will accuse atheism of "being a religion". That it is based on faith. They will - falsely - accuse it of being blindly dogmatic. They might point out that there is no evidence that atheism is correct and state that agnosticism is the only logical conclusion.
Okay. But, umm, aren't you promoting a religion? Is that religion not based on faith? Your religion is actually dogmatic, is it not? And if the only rightful conclusion is agnosticism, then should you not, therefore, be agnostic and not a member of your faith either?
It's a strange cognitive dissonance. Some kind of psychological projection.
That they accuse their enemy of being exactly that which they themselves are, but wield it in a negative and insulting way.
Fully able to comprehend why religion, faith and a lack of evidence is unreasonable for the atheist - which is entirely correct, except that, of course, atheism isn't a religion, atheist do not adopt it as a matter of faith (beyond the necessary axiomatic assumptions we all have to make - such as that reality is actually real and not an illusion to deceive us sent by Descartes' demon, that the laws of logic do add up and make abundant sense even if we cannot formally prove that to be the case, et cetera).
Yet completely blinkered to see that they are the epitome of the very thing they accuse.
Now, there is a basis by which this cognitive dissonance can exist - that FALSE religions are bad, but that the "true religion" they believe in is an exception to this, and so the same scrutiny does not apply.
But it's one hell of a thin line, isn't it? It's playing with fire to have that in your head, if you wish to remain religious for the long haul. Because you're only really one small doubt - one intrusive thought - from thinking "what if it's the other way around?" and demolishing your own faith on your lonesome there.
There is, at the heart of this, I feel, a universal acceptance that science is a true and real power. Because, well, we have computers, we have agricultural machinery, we have GPS satellites, we have planes, we have antibiotics and fertilisers, we have modern medicine, and myriad more examples of science leading to life-changing technologies.
And, like, in the face of this unassailable track record, it would be obtuse to pretend like science has no merit whatsoever. Like claiming black is white, when everyone can see it and it's right in front of their faces that this is blatantly not the case. It's an untenable position. No-one's going to believe you, when you're standing right next to the thing that proves you wrong and they can directly see you're wrong with their own two eyes.
To, you know, post on the Internet that computers can't possibly exist. It's obviously an untenable position when you're using the fruits of science to claim that science ain't got it right - but, umm, if science is wrong, then you could not possibly have that computer you've got to even tell me this in the first place. The fact I can even hear your message at all automatically proves that your message is false.
But it leads to this strange dissonant dance. That they must seemingly wield the tools of science - to seem reasonable, to argue logically, to appeal to evidence - whilst standing on a big mountain of myth that denies all of that.
It's not just a strange position to take. It's a strange position to be in, as they often quite flawlessly capture the scientific methodology, they fake reasoned argument far too perfectly, and argue the rightful weight of evidence like a pro.
To mimic your opposition so thoroughly, that it really cannot be possible that they don't actually fully understand the position. They can argue it exactly, so they must comprehend it. But something prevents them from actually adopting it (or at least be charitable enough to understand why someone would believe that, even if you don't, and leave them be).
But it is quite bizarre. The religious mocking someone else for being religious. The faithful accusing others of "having faith" and painting it as entirely a bad thing, whilst standing in that exact position themselves. Faking reasoned argument - even appealing to actual scientific facts that they've bothered to research and understand - to argue against the practice of reason.
It really is, to quote Jesus, a supremely "thou hypocrite!!" moment, for sure.
But it repeats. It's common. Somehow, there's a lot of it about.
Quite, quite bizarre. Some deeply weird human psychology is afoot.

Every time I’ve heard an example like that it’s always been to point out that it couldn’t have been all evil people that were destroyed. How could children have been considered evil when wiping out a population - there are parts of that which would be completely unjustifiable & therefore could be considered an evil act in itself. This is why a lot of people can say with confidence “if the stories in the Bible are accurate, I’m more moral than God”…Because it’d be true. Children can’t be condemned for the actions of their parents or grandparents & to say otherwise would be ridiculous.
