The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.

Gaz: I asked that question in Church once - "Why don't we see any big deal miracles like the burning bush today?" Soon after, I had witnessed in my personal life (maybe I was just paying attention, now) so many miracles of healing and deliverance in my family, impossible rescues (my daughter fell off the grand canyon and clung to the ONLY scrubby bush cropping out of the sidewall), and other personal revelations. Miracles abound today - most happen in the privacy of your prayer time and are not video-recorded - too bad for that - but it DOES mean that you are more apt to recognize them as you seek God of miracles and begin to recognize Him in your daily life. John 3 16 can be that recognized miracle in your life. It reveals how much God loves you, what the desire of His heart is for you and what His promise is to you. Have a good day.

If someone told me they were abducted by aliens, I would not believe it. However if in a hundred years someone else wrote a story about that person being abducted by aliens even though they weren't there and didn't know the person, and then that story was unearthed thousands of years later, and that person's story went through dozens of translations and interpretations, then I would believe that.

Then theists would say that would violate their free will which is total BS! Proof of God does not violate one's free will to worship or even to believe. There are countless people who still think the Earth is flat despite proof. Satan has proof of God (he saw God personally) and yet still does not worship. Another issue is that theists imply belief or worship without proof is a merit, which is an incredibly dangerous and self-destructive proposition.
I remember Matt asking a caller to "ask your God what he wants you to say to us next because that response would remove any doubt of his existence". Unfortunately their God does not appear to want to help them and prefers to play hide and seek.

I was just trying to clarify what exactly he is looking for in terms of evidence for the resurrection.
He explicitly demands scientific evidence of miracles, then says that Jesus can die once at a fixed point in history, and it doesn't have to be scientifically repeated.
If this happens then that happens and that is proof that this happens!

That was my point, if it was the case that we had empirical evidence of resurrections occurring, it would not be called a miracle by some because people would still deny that God was responsible.
My point was that the resurrection should be investigated as a historical event, not as a scientific issue.

I would not believe a person alive today telling me he saw a dead guy rise at face value. I would be even less inclined to believe a dead guy's writing that another dead guy rose at face value.
Only thing left is for the writing to be in a dead language and translated multiple times. Then, it's golden.

Assuming the crucifixion had a vague resemblance to the story as repeated and passed on by those who heard about it second- or third-hand...

The soldiers were probably bored out of their minds and ready to start drinking. They'd have been delighted to declare this troublemaker dead and hand his corpse over to whoever slipped them a coin. A poke with a sword, a nudge with a sandal and it's "Take him down and get him outta here!"
If we judge history by common standards of human behavior, I'll believe bored soldiers and a small bribe or two LONG before I'll believe in "The Resurrection".
I live in Tennessee. Whenever someone gets cancer or heart disease they ask for prayers to cure it. The preachers claim they can heal folks of these ailments. The other day a lady I locked her keys I her car while at church. She asked the preacher for help. He called a locksmith because even though he can cure people of cancer, he cannot unlock a simple lock.

Even if it's a family member who suddenly believes, that is still not evidence. For example, a cousin may not believe the alien stories and then, suddenly decide that aliens do abduct human beings and the most interesting thing to do to said human is to provide an anal probe examination.

Objective evidence. Not feelings. Not "look at a tree". Not "I have a book". Not "well all these morons said it and they can't all be wrong". Evidence. say.. the kind of evidence you would need to convert to another religion.
I really don't care what 500 people say if the objective evidence that I look at says "Nope. That cannot be". For example, if 10 billion human beings swore that a teapot was circling one of the moons of Jupiter (Ganymede - cool name), I would not accept that hearsay. I would require photographic evidence, I would require testing for forgeries and other measurements to verify the existence of such an unusual claim.
So here's my request to the gullible morons who prefer to believe in lies. Give me 10 billion dollars in my bank account by the end of January 31, 2020 or accept that you are liars who are lying to everybody. Your god can do "anything". Prove it. Prove your god exists by giving me my objective evidence.

It never actually says "planet earth," or "terra," or whatever we call it nowadays. "Context" is really the worst excuse christians give for their immoral holy book. You might as well just flat out tell someone they can't read at the third grade level that the passages were written in. So instead of bitching about me getting something wrong, why don't you get your foot out of your mouth, put your money there and tell me exactly how being a eunuch is good in one passage but not in another, how your evil god both punishes innocent people and does not, and how slavery isn't the horrible practice that humanity has known it to be since before the American Civil War.

what a moron. even if the stars vanished from our view or the moon changed into a camel and started dancing that would not be a confirmation of a miracle or the supernatural since we would not have a mechanism differentiating that from any other possible explanation such as, unknown physical anomaly, interaction with another universe, the programmer tweaking the simulation, mass hallucination, etc.

Hillarious! I grew up in a religious family. After i became a grown up and a dad i had different beliefs. My daughter was about 5 years old. She was hearing about Jesus. She was scared. She looked at me and asked "daddy, is jesus a zombie"? I still crack up at that to this day!

I have a friend that is a big time fanatic, I mean 30 years bible study, teaches Sunday school, you name it. He sells insurance, my degrees are in science. We go thru this stuff a lot. When it comes to religion its like every bit of common sense is just out the window...... I finally told him a few days ago , I dont think you understand exactly the full weight of the argument your putting forth here, Do you realize that in order for the Biblical story to be true, that magic and the super natural has to be real. That means that Voo Doo has to be real. THAT got his attention......LOL These guys are just amazing. I ask him to show me one thing in the world that religion has cured, or solved, and of course he couldn't do it. Then he turned the question on me, I sighted Polio, Smallpox, Whooping Cough, Tuberculosis, ,,,and ask him if I should go own. The next thing he told me was,,,I know a lot more about the Bible than you do. I told him of course you do, you spent 30 years studying it. Ive spent a few months here researching it on your recommendation and we obviously didn't arrive at the same conclusion. But its not because you spent more time on it. I dont have to go all the way to the bottom of a well before I realize im in a hole, I knew it was a waste of time from the start because the whole story is bust without magic. I was actually surprised the mistakes and errors are so obvious and people still believe them. To be quite honest with you, I think your pissed off that you wasted 30 years of your life on something that I have proven to you is nothing but a fairy tale. Thing is, (and I'm taking the side of science), no miracle will EVER be proven by science or otherwise, because anything that happens that can't be demonstrated, proven, tested, etc. as far as science is concerned is simply something that needs to be studied in search for a scientific explanation. And if scientists are absolutely unable to research the phenomenon- now - then the conclusion is simply "we don't have the technology or prior foundation to begin to study it yet". So anything that can't be studied now is in a state of waiting on future generations to try.
What religion calls a miracle, science calls "currently undefined", "a theory", or "a hypothosis".
Even if God himself showed up in person, science would still not claim that God exists because God is "something". We don't know what. I'm mean spirit, but even that would be something even if it couldn't be studied.
I suppose science would concede if an overwhelming presence appeared and declared itself God, and created a brand new living creature before plenty of witnesses. THAT would be God.
But, that is what Matt is getting at. Why all the mystery and seclusion? Will the real God please stand and a proove who you are. I can give Matt (the caller) an example of a "resurrection" that has just as much evidence as Jesus, so there ARE other cases which then disproves it because he said if there were other cases that would change his mind.
Lazarus was resurrected. So there are more cases, with similar levels of evidence to what he accepts, and since he said that would prove resurrections are not miracles.
This discussion brought to mind the folks who see an image of a face in a piece of toast , or melted cheese or a cloud formation,etc., and jump to the conclusion that it is miraculously an image of Jesus or Mary but they have no verifiable images of the actual Jesus or Mary for comparison. Even if the images were of actual people there is no possible way to confirm who those people were.

Miracles happen constantly, they're a common event. You pass a woman in the street wearing a red dress. Behind her is someone you haven't seen in years, they're wearing a blue shirt and black trousers. A Ford car drives past at the same time. Calculate the odds of each separate event occurring at the precise time they did, then calculate the odds of all three happening at the same time. I could insist that due to the odds against all three happening at one are so high as to be meaningless, and that it had to be designed to be so, and nobody could prove otherwise.
If Jesus if alive, where does he live? According to the Bible only souls go to heaven. So why did Jesus needed to be resurrected, if his soul is in heaven?

Resurrection is God reclaiming the soul, taking back what is his.
Jesus did not come back to life, that is a misunderstanding on your part. Jesus died and God took his body and soul back to its original Creator, when Jesus makes his return, he's coming back as the exact same person because God preserved his body and soul through resurrection.
The Dalai Lama is reincarnated into different bodies because his creator has not preserved his body and soul through resurrection, but only the soul is preserved through reincarnation, that's why he needs a new body everytime, and he doesn't use the same body over and over.
It might be a small difference in the big scheme of things, but it's a difference none the less, they just aren't the same thing.

I would say his level of skeptisim is inconsistant. It goes up for aliens and I assume for similar accounts to christianity in other religions like fullfilled prophecies, yet goes down for this ressurection event.

Who said anything about the dishonesty of those telling personal abduction stories? You're missing the point. I don't doubt that many of the people claiming they were abducted have a story to tell and believe they're relaying their experience honestly. They experienced *something*. Maybe they wrote it down, made a video about it, or told the local news. How do WE verify their claims and find out if they are true? What evidence would YOU accept to convince you of their abduction story? When you figure that out you'll be closer to understanding why I don't believe your claims about a resurrected deity.

4:15 sounds logically impossible, since any demonstration of the supernatural would require natural forces to demonstrate it, rendering that thing not supernatural. Logically you would need a supernatural cause to demonstrate a supernatural event, or test in order to meet this standard/criteria, making it a self-defeating proposition.
