    We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
    ► freethoughtblog...
    TH-cam comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of TH-cam comment sections, in our experience.
    We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

    WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
    The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
    The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
    We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

      Actually its interesting that catholics are more progressive than most other christians.
      In the 1950 encyclical Humani generis, Pope Pius XII confirmed that there is no intrinsic conflict between Christianity and the theory of evolution, provided that Christians believe that God created all things and that the individual soul is a direct creation by God and not the product of purely material forces.[1] Today, the Church supports theistic evolution(ism), also known as evolutionary creation,[2] although Catholics are free not to believe in any part of evolutionary theory.
      The catholic church even allows for the 13.8 Billion year old universe. I hate defending my old church, but its not the worst of the churches, relativism but more progressive than it once was and in comparison to some other christians to be sure.

    • @thorinbane
      @thorinbane 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like I mentioned, the pope acknowledged the proper age of the universe.
      " Orthodox churches and the various American Evangelical churches are the only major Christian denominations less conservative than Catholicism. " Thats like 2/5ths of Muricans. How about Mormons? Maybe Amish or Mennonite? Baptist-can't dance or drink. Add those up and its a few more percentages.
      Better question, what christian churches are less conservative than catholics. Its a pretty small list that starts at United. Anglican are Catholics that can divorce...So I guess they are "less conservative" but not by much. Pentacostals ? LOL nope.
      So its pretty sad that in the USA Catholics are on the progressive side of the spectrum. Pretty crazy.
      Much of the rest of the world is a lot less religious. Buddhist isn't really a religion and hindu believe in a pantheon, europe is way down and a lot more secular. How many religious people are there in china? This show is mainly focused towards Anglo countries, so that is my jumping off point. Catholic church is still stick in the dark ages in some regards, but some popes have been a lot more progressive than others. Admitting the universe isn't 6,000 year old, like many people in the states believe, is pretty huge.

    The next stage of human development and the exploration of space is dependent on humanity growing out of religion.
    Children grow out of believing in Santa Clause in order to become responsible adults.
    Responsible adults are people who take responsibility for their own actions, and religion says they don't have to, and that is more of a hindrance the a way of growing.

    Randy, dear, I was the victim of a two-parent household. Here's what I learned: Mentally healthy people do NOT stay with mentally damaged people.
    Let me repeat that: One mentally healthy parent will not remain with a partner who is mentally deranged.
    But TWO parents with emotional issues often remain a couple and can do terrible damage to their children
    My mother was a high-functioning autistic. My father was an abusive bully. They remained married for 50 years and were living hell to be around. Mother was convinced "God" wanted her to stay with her husband. Dad dearly loved tormenting her.
    I really hope you're a POE and not serious about religion being a positive influence in people's lives. Because I guarantee there's NOTHING positive about being forced to remain in an unhappy, dysfunctional relationship! No child benefits from growing up around the two most important people in his or her life who loathe each other.

    In 2009, I convinced my “god fearing christian” family members to use the money we would’ve used to give each other gifts at Christmas to help a poor family provide gifts for their kids. While they agreed to do it, they didn’t “enjoy” Christmas Day as much and wouldn’t agree to do it again the following year. I told them that I would give to the needy every year and only give gifts to the children in our family who were under 18. I also told them that if they wanted to do something different then that’s their right but don’t expect me to participate. You wouldn’t believe the number of private calls and text messages I was bombarded with in the following weeks. So, when I brought the subject up the next time we were together they ALL tried to deny that any of that happened and that I was lying. Fortunately, I saved the text messages I was asked by all of them to delete and you should’ve seen their faces when I started reading them out loud, giving credit to the person who sent each one to me. They, of course, denied all of it or tried to explain it away but I held firm and told them they either “cut the shit”, ie stop trying to intimidate me privately because the next time I get a message like that it’s going on Facebook and I’ll tag your sorry ass in the post too! Hell, I thought that pooling our resources and really making a difference for some kids who are less fortunate than us would’ve made all my “Christian” family members happy but all it did was expose their hypocrisy. I don’t regret it one bit though. I’d much rather know the truth every time. I’m a musician and I’m working on a concept album that addresses truth and reality versus beliefs, superstition and the supernatural. I’m sure it’ll ruffle some feathers among the religious people I know when it’s released. Thanks for your positive remarks! 🤘🏻

    As a former certified addiction counsellor I can say the fact is that the rate of addiction (to any drug including alcohol) has remained steady for decades. At any given time 5% of the population is in "crisis mode" due to their addiction and a further 5%-10% are on their way. Since becoming atheist some 8 or so years ago I have attended many and started a couple of Secular AA meetings where no god or higher power is necessary in order to recover from alcoholism or drug addiction. And guess what? People can and do stay clean and sober without a god or higher power central to their recovery.

    What I wish Matt would have mentioned was that while religions claim to help people, there is also the proliferation of churches who preach what they call the doctrine of wealth...."Send us your money." It's called "seed money", wherein the pastor or preacher, or whatever encourage, their congregation to buy them multi-million dollar private jets and multiple mansions...All of course, tax free. As George Carlin once noted, "If there is a God, then why does he need all this money?" And Matt was right, sure there are plenty of religious charities, but name one in particular which provides beds and food for the homeless which does not require that they sit through and hour long sermon, simply to keep from freezing or starving to death outside.

      I presume that since you are against abortion, you must be for the best ways to combat it, like comprehensive sex education, encouraging people be safe when they engage in sexual behavior and to have children when they are ready, correct?

      You also didn’t address any of the points I raised in my response to you, which isn’t a fun way to have a discussion.
      Mandatory sterilization is a violation of bodily autonomy and as such would be incredibly illegal. Also you really should look up the history of sterilization by the state in the us, it was rather prominent in the early 1900s and actually heavily influenced Adolf Hitler. Eugenics were very popular in America at the time.

    i agree with the caller that morals in the US are decresing but there is no causation to religion. it is the american unwillingness to control the markets that increases the unfair wealth distribution. they blame the individual for being poor rather than taking social measures to prevent poverty, also the pressure of the people to succeed destroys people mentally and makes them vulnerable to drugabuse. amerians have been stripped and bent over the table by special interest groups including churches and to be honest i am not sure if, in this rigged election system they can ever get up again.

    There is absolutely nothing wrong with a single parent household. My mom raised me on her and own and I came out just fine. The one time I had two parents in my life, when my mom got remarried, was some of the worst years in my life when they began arguing and yelling at each other all the time. When she divorced him and we moved back to our old house, life was much better. So if you think a two parent household is best, consider situations like this.

  • @klaxoncow
    @klaxoncow 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Indeed, on the single parent angle, let's not forget that someone could end up being a single parent, simply because the other parent died.
    Surely you can't find any "moral decline" or fault to that situation, right?
    And even if they are a single parent because the other parent shirked their responsibilities and ran away... that's surely not the other parent's fault, right? The single parent is sticking by their kids, is being responsible, is doing the best they can. They're doing the right thing and can't be blamed for someone else's choice not to do the right thing.
    (Sure, you might want to pin some "moral decline" on the part of the parent that ran away, but that shouldn't be pinned on the single parent who's actually sticking to their guns - even though parenting alone has got to be far more difficult. So, even in these cases, it shouldn't be the single parents who're getting the bad rap, you should rather say "absentee parents" rather than "single parents" - the single parents, who're sticking around and accepting their responsibilities to their children, are surely not the moral problem here, yes?)
    Or, put another way, let's also bring up the statistics on how many single parents chose to be single parents, against those who just ended up that way, against what they wanted, because the other parent died or ran away or whatever.
    Because you've got to subtract those people from the overall "single parent" statistics, to find the ones who're in "moral decline". The single parents themselves ain't that, as they're sticking around to do the right thing by their kids and are surely not in "moral decline" for that, yes?
    If you're going to make these complaints at all, then label it as "absentee parents" and don't label it as "single parents".
    In the same way that if there was a rise in burglaries that you wanted to complain about as a "moral decline", you'd criticise the rise in burglars, not criticise the rise in people allowing themselves to be stolen from. At least blame the perpetrator, and not the victim, please.

    • @TehVolts
      @TehVolts ปีที่แล้ว

      In a chemical dependency class I took in college I read a really insightful book that discussed this as well. The "success" rates touted in AA are deceptive and misleading because it is a selection bias that doesn't account for all of the individuals that quit or dropped out from attending AA because it was unsuccessful for them. The people who end up being successful through the help of AA were also likely the people who were more likely to achieve success regardless. Public perception regarding substance use treatment is that AA and other 12 step groups are the only ways to achieve sobriety.
      This is especially an issue for people who are not religious or spiritual, as the 12 step model is founded off of the idea that you have to submit to a higher power than yourself. They will try and convince you that your "higher power" doesn't have to be religious, that it can be completely separate from any religious belief. As someone who isn't religious or spiritual and initially tried to achieve sobriety through NA, I found that notion incredibly ridiculous. I read the entire NA book and I just couldn't wrap my head around the fact that I'm supposed to just make up a higher power in my head and surrender to it. This issue is literally just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the issues with the 12 step model, as I have written entire essays on this subject.

      I'd say go ahead and call, sounds like you'd have an interesting conversation with the hosts.

    Hitchens pointed out that Mother T's organisation was swimming in donation money - rnough to do a great deal of medical good, if used properly. Despite that, the Missionaries of Charity just seem to sit on the cashpile and keep on doing their small-scale, austere, sometimes amateurish thing.

    Now that they are actively involved in politics...churches need to have open books and they need to pay taxes as a business. I got kicked off twitter for saying this. Please get on twitter if you feel the same way. Do we really want the kinds of religions that they have in the middle east?

    the reason why you see more things like depression outside the church is because the church considers it a non issue and doesn't offer help like that so people are having to go with other methods that are less judgmental
    mental health in religion is taboo and that's why your not suppose to talk about it which makes people with these problems never seek help so if anything it just makes people think they are alone which makes the problem worse

    A well functioning society wouldn't have charities for their own population.

    Without religion we would help ourselves and each other instead of sitting around praying about it.

    I hope the irony is not lost on him there

    Remember that Family Guy episode where Stewie and Brian go to an alternate dimension where religion disappeared from society a long time ago? Everything was better. EVERYTHING. Society was far more technologically advanced, scientific research cured cancer, etc. While there’s a lot of hyperbole in that, there’s an element of truth to it.

      Well maybe, however if it wasn’t religion it’d be some other such group. It definitely wouldn’t have stifled expression or science as much though. Not to mention an enormous percentage of wars are/were started through a religion, or someone who claimed to have a deity on their side.

    Religious organizations should be the very first to voluntarily hand over their books. But they don't, because they know for a fact that nearly everyone would leave upon learning the truth about their organization.
