Funny that one of you said The Cult are notoriously difficult to work with when he referred to Matt Sorums short tenure with the band. Based on my personal interaction with Matt and several others I know who have worked with him...It is Matt who is the difficult one to work with and even be around. (I'm being kind in that assessment...I could bash him but I wont)
At the end of the day Billy and Ian are the Cult and its their vision that will always lead the band into whatever territory they choose. They have had powerhouse drummer (John Tempesta) behind the kit now for well over a decade.
Ive seen them 20 times since 87 and the 2019 and 2022 shows were hands down the 2 best Cult shows I have ever seen. Their most current line up is totally dialed and is a well oiled machine.
Love their entire body of work. Sure I have my favorites....but I love how they take chances and attempt to reinvent themselves and somehow still remain The Cult...and based on the show I saw last week...haven't lost any gas LIve...and certainly haven't lost any love from the fans
    the place was packed

    For me:
    1. Sonic Temple
    2.Love
    3. Electric
    4. Beyond Good and Evil
    5. The Cult
    6. Choice of Weapon
    7. Ceremony

    9. Dream time
    10. Hidden City

Interesting show. I've been a fan since The Southern Death Cult, then Death Cult days, and so have a slightly different perception of The Cult. For a Top 3,I would go
    1. Love
    2.Dream Time
    3. Sonic Temple
I think the fact that both "live" albums were initially only limited editions/promotional tools was a lost opportunity-you even had to send away a" proof of purchase " for "Pure Cult" to get the second disc of "Live Cult".

Sonic Temple, Love and Electric would be my top 3 but would shift positions on a moment by moment basis. I just remember the release of Sonic Temple being a real event though and the opening is beyond epic.

Yeah, Love is the last and greatest Cult album before they had to attempt commercial success from record company pressures etc, they were completely repackaged to compete with mainstream hard rock groups, post Love they have kind of been all over the place, but they did also write some awesome songs along the way.

Killer band; so underrated. Love is their best album, for sure.
Very excited to see "ranking the albums" shows from other two underrated english bands: The Cure and The Stranglers.

    Sonic temple
    Electric
    Born into this
    Capsule Tracks
    Love
    Hidden City
    1994
    Beyond GAE
    Choice of weapon
I simply went by what I listen to the most. I do not have ceremony or dreamtime any more so did not rank them. Would be last obviously.
I added the four songs released as "capsules" and then were released as a second disc of COW. Embers is in my top 5 Cult songs. So glad they played that live when I saw them last.
    Seeing them again this week.
    Good conversation guys!

For me, "Love" all day, every day. The Cult have become one of my favorite bands. Billy Duffy has a lot of impact as a guitar player; he locks in with bass and high hat, so even during solos, the rhythm never falls out.

I just want to say thank you for this; it really lifted my mood in a difficult week. Despite my best efforts, no-one I play their stuff too gets them; with one exception they are voluntarily living the life anaesthetised, a sort of real life version of the Simpsons. So, it was great to hear 4 people who like the band discussing one of my favourites. Although my first exposure was the sheer spinal shock of 'Love Removal Machine' in 1987 and I loved them, it wasn't until 1993 that I really got diving deep. For me, my favourites as albums are Love, Ceremony, Sonic Temple, Dreamtime, Electric, Beyond Good and Evil and then The Cult. I like the more recent albums but ... I was delighted and surprised to hear so many positive vibes for The Cult album, which I think is quite brilliant but also very difficult - to me there is quite a challenging mood, often despairing, driven by some great lyrics from Ian Astbury. Mostly, I think of the Cult as a fun band that play with genres, so the self titled album is quite a change of mood. Thanks once again, peace dogs.

I think The Cult are one of those hard rock bands that will put a smile on someone’s face whenever their songs come on in almost any environment. I personally like Love, Electric, and Sonic Temple the best. I think Ian briefly sang in the short-lived Doors Of The 21st Century band.

In the early 80’s I used to go to a pub in Birmingham UK where rockers, goths and punks all hung out together. It was here I first heard of and loved The Cult and I got to see them for the first time in a small nightclub in the city in 1985.
Seen them many times since and will see them again next month joint headlining with Alice Cooper!
Top 3 albums for me are
    1. Sonic Temple
    2. Love
    3. Electric
    Top 3 songs
    1. Wild Hearted Son
    2. Sun King
    3. Spiritwalker

    4. Sonic Temple
    5. Choice of Weapon
    6. Beyond Good and Evil

Long time waiting for this one !! Very entertaining and it shows how much Cult fans have different opinions about their favourite albums. Love the early stuff as much as the most recent ones. i won’t bother ranking them since tomorrow my number 10 might be my number 1. For me, the Cult belongs in a category on its own. I don’t know of any other band that morphed so many times and remained relevant throughout the decades.

Fun fact: I was only familiar with the Cult up until Ceremony, so I've listened to the other half just recently, LOL. So, for now, my list is:
    10. The Cult (1994) - 4,5 or 5/10 (For now, this album is pretty bland for me, but that might change in the future. Favorite songs: "Joy", "Sacred Life", "Be Free";)
    9. Born into This (2007) - 7,5/10 (Favorite songs: "I Assassin", "Illuminated", "Savages", "Sound of Destruction";)
    8. Dreamtime (1984) - 7,5 or 8/10 (Favorite songs: "Spiritwalker", "83rd Dream", "Butterflies", "Gimmick";)
    7. Hidden City (2016) - 8,5/10 (Favorite songs: "Dance the Night", "G O A T", "Avalanche of Light", "Heathens";)
    6. Beyond Good and Evil (2001) - 9/10 (I was really surprised when I first listened to it, 'cos this album is the heaviest they ever done, and WHAT A BANGER this album is! Favorite songs: "The Saint", "Rise", "Take the Power", "Breathe";)
    5. Love (1985) - 9 or 9,5/10 (Favorite songs: "Brother Wolf, Sister Moon", "Hollow Man", "She Sells Sanctuary" (My favorite song from them), "Black Angel";)
    4. Choice of Weapon (2012) - 9,5/10 (Favorite songs: "Honey from a Knife" (My favorite song from the modern era), "The Wolf", "For the Animals", "Amnesia";)
    3. Sonic Temple (1989) - 9,5/10 (Favorite songs: "Sun King", "Fire Woman", "American Horse", "New York City";)
    2. Electric (1987) - 10/10 (One of the best hard rock albums ever, period. Favorite songs: "Peace Dog", "Aphrodisiac Jacket", "King Contrary Man", "Outlaw";)
    1. Ceremony (1991) - 10/10 (This album is, IMO, the most interesting and unique they've done, because of the tribal/Native American elements they've included, which makes this album an amazing one! Favorite songs: "Ceremony", "Wild Hearted Son", "Earth Mofo", "Heart of Soul", "Sweet Salvation" (My favorite ballad from them);)
My number 2 and 1 were really hard to pick, I had to consider either the consistency (Electric) or the variety (Ceremony) to be the #1. Even though I've picked the variety, this might change next week or even tomorrow, LOL.

I'm really happy you finally did a ranking show on The Cult!! :) A pretty underrated band. I'm definitely a "goth" period Cult fan, although I love Sonic Temple - not a single bad song on it! I remember back then lot of people from the alternative camp complained about Cult becoming one more "hair" band with this record.

  • @marclahn7072
    @marclahn7072 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

"LOVE" All the way, and it's never really been close.
One of those great albums that grabs you at the beginning and doesn't let you go until the dead wax of side 2. Full of good shimmering riffs, catchy and/or hypnotic numbers and Ian Astbury at the very top of his game.
But it's the stunning, gothic, emotionally-tinged 'songs' that allow him to shine the way he does throughout this record (eg "Big Neon Glitter," "Love," "Brother Wolf, Sister Moon," "Revolutuon," "Nirvana") all great tracks. "Hollow Man" as well! And the two hits, "Rain" and esp. "She Sells Sanctuary" are both impactful and highly memorable singles. Overall, LOVE is their highwatermark album, and the reason I became a Cult fan in 1986.
Outside of that, I've always liked the S/T, 1994 album quite a bit. Whether it leans on alt. rock or not, the material is strong. I dig the songs. Very good and unique LP. I might rate that one 2nd.
Well, that or "ELECTRIC," which, although AC/DC derivative, is a good record, including some visceral, effective tunes, including the excellent "Love Removal Machine" *Absolutely have to nix "Born to Be Wild" though. Uuugggh. The rest of it though, top shelf Cult.
So that would be the Top 3 for me.
    ----------------------------
    Others:
The "DREAMTIME" LP is decent, but a bit too loose/not focused/unrefined (just weren't there yet) "Spiritwalker" is pretty much the highlight for me. I do agree with Martin that, "I'm glad they made it." I personally love The Cure, Siouxsie, Bauhaus, etc. This Dreamtime album does "not" compete with that, but it's cool that they were within that kind of artistic mindset. Their next album though, would compete, bigtime! As said, the quality jump from Dreamtime to LOVE was monumental.
"CEREMONY" is okay. Pretty decent, and I liked it alright when it came out (even bought the "White EP" as well) But over the years, it's kinda just sat there on the shelf. I'll have to reevaluate, b/c I haven't listened to it in maybe 19 years.
"Beyond Good and Evil" ? I don't know. I bought it new in 2000. Popped it in that day, and ran screaming from the speakers. Not due to the music/songs (which I think are good) so much as the overt, mind numbing brickwall mastering and quasi-harsh EQ. I like my music with some dynamics and this ain't got it. Not an indictment of the music though. Just not an easy listen, sonically. You can't crank this stuff when it's all the same level...and music should be able to be cranked! *I do also have a general aversion to certain albums of this time, when it seemed there was an intentional kind of de-tuned "over heaviness" going on. And for me, when it's so intentionally over-heavy, it's not heavy. So I "intentionally" didn't capitalize it's title up there.
Finally, "SONIC TEMPLE" (the MTV album) *Just not for me* I don't like the look of the band here (like they just fell out of 1989's "accepted hair and clothing" closet, located at the business offices of MTV) and the music/songs seem like they did too.
Couple tracks I like okay, but this is nowhere near the dark, cool, catchy & hypnotic "LOVE". Sonic Temple, for me (although much better than most of the lame hair metal which surrounded it), is one of the more overrated and underwhelming LPs of that Godforsaken era. --- I get it for late comers though. You can't help your age... and, you know, if that goofy, sterilized, big hair, fake drum commercial MTV thing (w/shoulder pads) worked for ya.
    So again, top 3:
    LOVE (1985) All day. #1
    THE CULT (1994) #2
    ELECTRIC (1987) #3
    Marc

Great show. Been waiting for this for a while. I thought maybe you all would have different picks. IMO that just shows how good a catalog they actually have. Most rankings end up agreeing on the top 2, maybe just flip flopped. But this one you all were different except 2 agreed on the number 2. This one was really hard for me to pick the order of the top 4 or 5 favs but I gave it a shot. After switching my order a dozen times here’s what I went with.
    10- Dream Time
    9- Born Into This
    8- Choice Weapons
    7- Hidden City
    6- Sonic Temple
This is where the struggle began
    5- Electric
    4- Beyond Good and Evil
    3- Love
    2- The Cult
1- Ceremony (White and Wonderland are FANTASTIC songs) Wonderland is a song I thought for the episode you did on best songs ending an album.
What I love about The Cult is how they change just enough from album to album yet keep enough of there sound to where you know it is them when you hear a song. That’s what made this ranking so hard for me because every album kills in its own right. I love how their music , singing style and lyrics just fit together so well that when you listen it’s like you are actually in the scene that they are creating. Love it. Good job all four of you on this one!!!

This is an impossible discography for me to rank being that The Cult are one of my all time favorite bands. Not a bad album on the list. I can however do my top five favorites and my two least favorites.
    Top Five:
    1. Ceremony
    2. Love
    3. Beyond Good and Evil
    4. Sonic Temple
    5. The Cult
    Least Favorites:
    9. Born Into This ( The bonus CD had the best stuff on it IMO)
    10. Electric
Again, impossible for me to rank 6-8
Thank you guys for the great episode.
P.S. "Sonic Temple" does not sound dated.

Nothing beats finding a SOT ranking ya somehow missed of a favorite band. This was great and agree with something from each panel member, agree with Jamie on everything Sonic Temple, with Pete on Beyond Good & Evil, Guitar Hack on Ceremony (was a late bloomer fer me) and absolutely agree with Martin on the underappreciated Hidden City \m/ My current rankings complete with a fave deep cut recommendation...

I loved this episode Pete...The Cult just got you guys goin' different directions in a good way which is pretty cool. The Cult really evolved from a Goth new wave thing to a heavy rocking band. I never knew where to categorize this band when they came out in the 80's. My number 1 is still Electric! Jamie is right though...the Born To Be Wild cover was just painful and sad. Sonic Temple is my runner up...I got to go back and listen to that Self Titled Album and Beyond Good and Evil. By the way Martin I have to defend Love Removal Machine lyric. No offense I think it's smart and pretty cool...kinda makes you think what kind of a machine it is. The song makes me imagine that its as a physical trippy machine where you stick a human inside and remove their love...LOL. Keep up the good work guys! More ranking vids!

I’ve been a Cult fanatic ever since 1985, when I first saw the video of She Sells Sanctuary...
The Cult are among my top 10 favorite bands of all time, I have all the (numerous) outtakes, countless bootleg live recordings etc etc.
I like all their albums a lot - and some of them I absolutely adore.
Ranking the albums (apart from the top 3) is quite difficult - and I’m probably not very “objective”, because I have not listened to their post 1994 albums as much as I have (literally devoured!) the first six albums. But I’ll give it a shot :
    1. LOVE (the perfect hybrid of post punk / alternative rock and hard rock! Hats off to Mr. Guitar Hack for his analysis on the album ! For me it’s a PERFECT album)
    2. SONIC TEMPLE (another perfect album, actually the only album that I listened to five times from start to finish during the first two days after I had bought it, I can’t forget that !)
    3. ELECTRIC (a real treat for us hard/metal rockers of 1987 - Wild Flower is the best AC/DC song that AC/DC never recorded! I wish they didn’t do the BTBWild cover...)
    4. THE CULT (s/t 1994)
    5. DREAMTIME (yes, I also love their “goth” era, including their Death Cult days)
    6. CEREMONY (less than half I really love, the rest is OK)
    7. HIDDEN CITY (probably the most memorable from their 21st century albums)
    8. BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL
    9. CHOICE OF WEAPON
    10. BORN INTO THIS (maybe the roughest from the later albums, not always in a good way)

  • @jimhawkes
    @jimhawkes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I saw them on the Electric tour back in the day and they were fabulous - and that probably colours my perception...
    For me top 3 are:
    3. Sonic Temple
    2. Love
    1. Electric

  • @cornchipsnovemberland3565

    Great Cult LPs:
    1. Dreamtime: IMHO it is brilliant...far and away their best, a masterpiece of the era...
    2. Love: lush and gorgeous, although kinda one-dimensional
    3. Sonic Temple: production is HUGE, songs are vary from brilliant to cheeseball
    4. Hidden City: mature with great atmosphere...songs are consistently good throughout
    5. Beyond Good and Evil: heavy and unique, although again, kinda one-dimensional
However, the remainder of their catalog is pretty spotty to me:
    6. The Cult
    7. Choice of Weapon
    8. Ceremony
    9. Electric
    10. Born Into This

1-Love / 2-Electric (it's a mood thing-my top position always changes between those 2) / 3-Sonic Temple (I hear Martin and kinda agree with him, but those songs are hard to forget) / 4-The Cult (it could be in the 4th position if it were shorter) 5-Choice of Weapon / 6-Dreamtime (too many memories) / 7-Beyond... / 8-Ceremony / 9-Born Into This / 10-Hidden City (maybe it's better than Born into This: it's not cringeworth at all - and there are some cringeworth moments on Born Into This).

Yeah man I totally agree, for the purpose of this ranking, "Peace" is my number one pick. "Electric" is absolutely not better than Peace. Electric is slick. No disrespect to Rick Rubin but his imprint is overwhelming. He did it on Danzig's first album as well and in some ways that may have put them on the map. So maybe that was a necessary step.

Funny that Sonic Temple ranks so high here, that album and “Ceremony” and “The Cult” were the 3 albums by them that we had the most copies used in the record/cd shop I worked, people sold them in droves, those three albums were like the plague only a few years after their releases, in the case of “The Cult” album straight out of the gate . We rarely ever had people coming in to sell “Love” and it rarely stayed long if we had a used copy, same with “Electric” to a lesser extent as “Love”.

I often Completely disagree with Martin but I always enjoy what he brings to the discussion. For example, he ranks Dreamtime low on the list but points out how much he loves that The Cult came from such a beginning, i.e. Siouxsee, The Mission, etc. That is just some really constructive insight into where the band came from and where they stand as a whole. PETE, I love your team and even envy you for having these kinds of wonderful (and different) friends. Thank you for sharing with the world!

For me the best by far were the early albums: Dreamtime (1984) and Love (1985), and also the pre-Cult albums Southern Death Cult (1983) and Death Cult - Brothers Grimm EP (1983)...I grew up on post-punk and gothic rock in the early 80's.

GREAT SHOW!!! At different points along the way, I completely disagreed (and agreed) with all four of you... but you all justified your opinions, didn't talk down to your audience, and for that I totally respect what you did here. Jamie Lazlo did a brilliant job of defending his No. 1 contrarian pick (which, FOR ME, is totally incomprehensible). It's obvious he loves the self-titled and that's cool as hell! Music is subjective, duh. For what it's worth, here's my list:
    THE GREAT
    1. Love (I love Love! A confident step up from Dreamtime.)
    2. Sonic Temple (I bought it the day it came out on the strength of the first single, Fire Woman. I totally agree with Jamie, this was something new and exciting that was sorely needed back in 1989!)
    3. Electric (the rocking version of the band emerges!)
    4. Dreamtime (to me, The Cult is a post-punk band at heart... but one that is capable of rocking out, obviously.)
    THE GOOD
    5. Beyond Good And Evil (The Cult... but heavier!)
    6. Ceremony (Sonic Temple II. Pretty good... just not as good as the previous record it tries to emulate.)
    7. Born Into This
    8. Choice Of Weapon
    THE NOT SO GOOD
    9. Hidden City
    10. The Cult (this one just won't click for me... and I've tried many times. For the first time, it sounds like they're chasing trends. It just feels inauthentic, in my opinion).

You guys need to get together to discuss the New Cult album. I will help you out here to get you started. It is Very Good, and the title song should be a new Bond Film. The problem is, it’s Too Short. ‘Butterfly’ and the title song could easily be at least 8 minutes each. ‘Impermanence’ is too short too, as it fades too quickly, giving the feeling that we are being cheated out of the rest of the song. Why can’t these producers just let these songs play out to their conclusion, even a ratty one at that. Or just end the song like you would on stage. The other problem is it may be their worst recorded album. Many of the songs sound like they were recorded in a cave. On headphones, it sounds like it was recorded from behind the bass amp. Brooding is okay but the bass seems to drown out the vocals to the point where it is not easy to understand what is being sung.
