Saw him last night in State College, he was phenomenal. He’s almost 74 years old, plays 3 hrs with no break, goes right into the encores and that particular band he has backing him? They’re no slouches either.
@@donakin8562 It all depends on how much Ticketmaster screws you. For his DC show this coming Monday my ticket was $140 in the nosebleed section. His DC show in August at a baseball stadium right off of the field was $150. Tix for next week's show right behind me were $260 because of the Verfied Fan crap. Regardless... $140-$150 for a legend like this, 3 hr show is worth it and I have seen him many times. Never more than $150.
@@donakin8562 Well from what I've read he's #1 overall in average ticket price for ALL acts (rock and otherwise) over the past several years (and by quite a bit). What you're talking about is value
I went to the show at UBS arena about a week or so later and it was awesome. I was never a huge Bruce fan, but was glad I went. The quality of the show was up there with the Stones in terms of performance. I paid $180 a ticket on the side of the stage which was a cool experience. I agree, the whole band was phenomenal as well the whole night.
Couldn't disagree more on the low ranking of Tunnel of Love, a rich, haunting album predicated on the fragile bonds of romantic love and the shock and chaos of its demise. Probably has something to do with the fact that I was going through a breakup at the time, lol. But some truly beautiful and amazing tracks on that album. Thanks, Pete, as always.
That album for definitely fits the last Friday at Funhouse episode where they talked about rediscovering old albums that aren't considered classics - I love Bruce with all my heart but his 73-84 is very engrained in my brain and after years of listening to him I discovered Tunnel of Love and it might be actually one of my favourites from him.
I consider myself a Springsteen fan, so I'll give you my top 10. Most are from his early days, with two exceptions. 1. The River 2. Darkness on the Edge of Town 3. Born to Run 4. The Wild, The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle 5. Born in the USA 6. Nebraska 7. Tunnel of love 8. Magic 9. Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ 10. Western Skies
Tunnel, Nebraska, and Born in the USA, along with sections from his Tracks compilation are my favorites. It’s so cool he’s got so much for each of us to like. Thanks for the video.
Born In The USA is an absolute classic, I don’t care how commercial it was, way way better than Greetings From Astbury Park, he sounds like he doesn’t even know what he’s doing yet, in fact I’d put it Born In The USA at number one, I’m playing it right now, every song is so good
Born In The USA and Born To Run are my favorite albums by him. I was born in the same year "Born In The USA" came out in. So, I'm the same age as the album. Yes, I will include Born In The USA next year as one of my picks for albums that turn 40 in 2024. My Mom and Dad had "Born In The USA" on cassette, but they lost it.
My favourite album is Live Anthology 1975-1985 ... a brillant Masterpiece. A Music Genius, fantastic lyrics and a Band on Fire ... thank you for the soundtrack of my life, Bruce And thanks to you Pete, for you fantastic Show - you make a lot of people's Lifes better 😊
Hey Pete... Amazing video.... Can I ask you if you been on a stadium in Philadelphia on July 13 1985 on a Live Aid concert or did you watch it on MTV at home on your Tv? It will be very cool if you can make a video about Live Aid that happened in 1985 and share your memories about this great event. Keep doing great videos I follow you since you have like 5K followers, and now you have over 80k... I'm super happy for you , you deserve it because you live and breath music all day long ;) Love you
Pete, just to answer your question as to why Human Touch and Lucky Town weren’t released as a double album, is that the label feared that at almost double the cost people would skip it and buy another artist instead. Recession was pretty grim in 1992. They’re also different sessions and feel.
I was also going to say something similar. I don't think that people would have bothered with a double album in 1992. The previous year, Guns N' Roses released Use Your Illusion as two separate cds.
1) Born to Run 2) Born in the USA 3) The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle 4) Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ 5) Darkness on the Edge of Town 6) The River 7) The Promise 8) Tunnel of Love 9) The Rising 10) Magic 11) High Hopes 12) Working on a Dream 13) Nebraska 14) Lucky Town 15) Human Touch 16) Letter to You 17) Wrecking Ball 18) We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions 19) Only the Strong Survive 20) The Ghost of Tom Joad 21) Devils & Dust 22) Western Stars
My top 5: 1. Nebraska 2. Darkness 3. The River 4. Born to Run 5. Born in the USA I'm a hillbilly and those acoustic instruments are right up my alley!!!
I like Western Stars a lot. Reminds me of Poco or The Eagles. It’s weird that he wouldn’t have taken two tracks off of Human Touch and thrown them on Lucky Town and then released two 49 minute 12 song albums. The River is probably my favourite album by Bruce. The song Stolen Car really resonates with me. The Tracks boxed set is also excellent.
I would rank them as follows: 1)Born In The USA 2)Born To Run 3)Greeting From Ashbury Park 4)The Wild the innocent... 5)Darkness At The Edge Of Town 6)The River I kind of stopped following his albums after "Born In The USA" but he did have some amazing hits after that with "Philadelphia"And "Tunnel of Love".
The River is double album packed with everything that makes Bruce great, it's my go to album from the Boss! Title track still gives me chills, beautiful and poignant, heartbreaking and REAL! Yeah, love The Tracks box set big time!
The problem with Bruce "The Boss" is that he is Mr. Blue Collar Man but he does not fight for the Blue Collar Folk any longer, Can he make a comeback? Of Course he can and he should. Fight back against Ticketmaster and give the lower classes a chance to go out and see him in concert and not have to spend $500 bucks or more for a ticket
Thanks Pete, "early" Bruce until 1988 including "Tunnel of love" is the period for me. Classic stuff, rest in peace The Big Man Clarence Clemons and The Phantom Danny Federici.
I was a casual Bruce fan for a long time--grew up with The River and Born in the USA, and enjoyed them. I had all but written him off until The Rising, and even then I was a little late giving it a chance. So, after I totally gave in and fell in love with that album, I committed to revisiting the whole catalog. I'd never listened to Nebraska, but when I did, something about that record just spoke to me. To me, it's one of those albums where you absolutely need to believe the hype--like Exile on Main Street or OK Computer. As a result, I have a lot of love for the acoustic albums. Nebraska would be my #1, Darkness on the Edge of Town #2, and The Rising #3. After that, there are a cluster of about 7-8 albums that are not separated by much! I'll have to sit with the whole bunch and go through them for a ranking!
Nebraska is as good as stripped down, acoustic music gets! His sharply observed, aching and deeply emotional lyrics have never been better than on this haunting, profound gem! Love Bruce's more low key vocals, he sings from a deep space in his soul, a place most artists don't reach.

Hi Pete, Great ranking. Very informative. The only Bruce albums I have are from the first one to the live album from 86. . . FYI: Video ad breaks/interruptions are appearing every 5 minutes or so on this video. I am not sure if you intended to have it set this way or if it is a YT imposed setting. Just to let you know because all of the other SOT videos I watch don't have this many video ads...
This may not mean much to folks outside the UK, but here goes. I wanted to check why John Peel really did not like Bruce Springsteen and I found this quote: "It utterly mystifies me. I can’t see it at all. I mean, when he first started out, as everybody said at the time as I recall, it sounded to me like sub-Dylan stuff. And it just doesn’t ring true. In the same way as I can’t really describe what it is I find attractive about the things I do find attractive, I really don’t know what it is I don’t like about Bruce Springsteen. It just doesn’t ring true to me. I suppose that’s what it boils down to."
Interesting that his listeners voted for Born to Run at number 25 in his 1978 Festive Fifty, one of just a handful of tracks to make it from outside the then dominant new wave genre. On that occasion Peel played it without additional comment.
Yes, surprising considering the tosh peel played weekly. Granted there were one or two obscure gems maybe per episode but quality control was non existent.
I didn't really get into Springsteen until I was in my late 20s (I'm 59 now), prior to that I was really only a radio fan of his. Here's my top 11 Boss albums (I couldn't narrow it to just 10). I really like all of these albums.... 11. Tunnel of Love. It's aged a bit but it still sounds really good. 10. Western Stars. The soundtrack version especially, it was done live in front of a small audience. I'm not a Country & Western fan but I really like the songs here. 9. Human Touch. Solid from start to finish. 8. Lucky Town. Ditto. Released the same day as Human Touch. 7. Letter To You. Just a teriffic rocker. After nearly 50 yrs Bruce's voice still sounds great. 6. The River. Double album that's got some filler but the rest is very strong. 5. Born in the USA. This one suffers from being overplayed but it's still a great album. 4. Greetings from Asbury Park. This is where we get into absolutely essential Bruce. 3. The Wild, the innocent, and the E Streer Shuffle. This is where he really hits his stride. 2. Darkness on the Edge of Town. Another great one from start to finish. 1. Born to Run. It's not overrated, not even a little. Even when I was a younger, middle-of-the-road Springsteen fan, this album was amazing. My intro to Bruce as a kid via my elder siblings. Thanks, Pete.
@@241156can Yeah, I've heard he was so obsessed with the album that he found it pretty much impossible to be satisfied with it. Apparently the title track took 6 month of work by itself.
Whew...the entire Bruce Springsteen catalogue. Thanks for this episode, Pete. Your lower rankings not too surprising based on your general musical tastes. In ranking Bruce's albums, it is mostly the emotional resonance of the particular album for a particular time in my 67+years that rank the album where i might put them. As such, I'll just attempt a top ten at this point. 1. Born To Run [the first album I heard when a friend home on college break put it on and said the infamous "You have GOT to hear this." 2. Darkness On The Edge Of Town. More early greatness for my youth. 3. The River. Just couldn't hear this enough. 4. Letter To You. Perfect emotional resonance for me at the time it was issued. A surprise from Bruce recently. 5. The Rising. As you said - I was in the City in October of '01 and walked the perimeter of the fenced off former World Trade Towers. Visiting there recently, still an emotional place for me personally. 6. Tunnel Of Love. Perhaps the best case of personal resonance at the time. The best musically and the most uplifting. Hardly. But each and every song sticks in my heart. 7. Nebraska. It scarcity spoke to me then and still speaks now. 8. Human Touch. My preferred of the dual issue date. 9, Born In The USA. Not listened to as often because heard so damn much but still means a good deal. 10. The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle. More Bruce of the time you think your an adult. Thanks again, Pete. Appreciate you taking the time to listen to all these and rank 'em as you hear 'em.
great video - thanks 🙂 I own all his records, but it's the earlier tuff for me that'll always be the finest, and The River is one of my top 10 all-time albums. I think most of his later recordings suffer from sounding over compressed, like there's something holding the sound back.
My top 5. Listening to Bruce since 1973. Thanks for the band practice invite and the drinks at the shore! Born to Run ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ + Innocent⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Darkness⭐️⭐️⭐️3/4 Tunnel⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Greetings⭐️⭐️⭐️
Quite the undertaking ranking them all and a great video. Really well said regarding The Rising album. That track in particular gave me chills when I saw it live. Here's my ranking: Born to Run Darkness on the Edge of Town The River The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle Nebraska Born in the U.S.A The Rising Magic Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ Letter to You Wrecking Ball Western Stars Tunnel of Love Only the Strong Survive High Hopes Devils & Dust The Ghost of Tom Joad Working on a Dream Human Touch Lucky Town We Shall Overcome
Pete, you mentioned the electric plans for Nebraska. Apparently there is a full band version of that album that was recorded at the time, it is kind of a holy grail for Springsteen collectors. Many are still hoping Electric Nebraska will come out at some point.
My top Favorites: 1- Darkness on The Edge of Town 2- Born to Run 3- The River 4- The Wild the Innocent and the East Street Shuffle 5- Greetings from Asbury Park 6- The Rising 7- Nebraska 8- Born in The U.S.A. 9- Lucky Town 10- Western Stars (A tribute to those amazing Glenn Campbell/Jimmy Webb songs from the late sixties) 11- The Promise 12- A Letter to You 13- Magic 14- Working on a Dream
Panning “Tunnel of Love”. For me it’s the only Bruce I currently still listen to. Title track happens to be my favorite of his. Not a bad song in the bunch on this gem. “Walk like a Man” “All that Heaven will Allow” “Valentines Day” “One Step Up” “Brilliant Disguise” Just endless…
The Song Tunnel Of Love is pure beauty, in lyrics and sound! Takes me to another place each and every time I hear it! The Boss is a genius with soulful music! He opens his soul to connect with us, he is an incredibly keen observer of the human condition! He is all of us, if that makes any sense.
I agree 100% on Tunnel of Love. The song itself is my all time favorite of his. Everything about it is pure excellence, from the lyrics to that guitar solo by Nils Lofgren which goes absolutely perfect with the song. The rest of the album is great and the lyrics on it? Fantastic. Really love Tougher than the Rest, Two Faces and Walk like a Man.
@@greengrass1072 The solo from Nils on Tunnel Of Love is perfection! Reading your excellent post, right when you mentioned the solo, I could hear the whole thing in my head, note for note, the mark of a great solo! Beautifully captures the intense drama and feel of this work of art! I just picked up a Nils Lofgren collection on disc and it is so damn good! Didn't realize how great his own material is - sure as hell should have! Cheers!
DOTEOT has been my favorite Springsteen album since 1978. Watching him at the Roxy in West Hollywood was the best concert I ever saw. Beyond legendary show.
On July 7th 1978? Bruce and the legendary played the old L.A. Forum the night before. The Roxy show was broadcast live over KMET. I would really like to hear from you if this was the show you’re mentioning. Great time for Springsteen fans.
@@billm3706 That was the concert I was at. Years later I got to hear it on the Sound. on KMET Day. Going to that that concert was fantastic. I think the concert is on TH-cam. It has been taken own a few times. And KMET was my favorite station. The late Jim Ladd was my second favorite there. BMR was the best though.
I got to hand it to you Pete I can totally relate with the ranking. A good job. Bruce I never got to see but so love the records. The top 5 albums and yea Bruce and The E Street Band that's the best for me too. Thanks Pete.
Agree Pete about putting the acoustic albums on the bottom. Otherwise I kind of agree with your picks, although I'd put the first 2 a little lower. Also, there must've been 7 or 8 commercial interruptions during this episode. There never used to be breaks during your episodes. Very frustrating
Ranked: Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Tunnel of Love, Wild Innocent & E St Shuffle, Tracks (mostly unreleased), Magic, Born in the USA, Nebraska, Rising, River, Wrecking Ball, Human Touch, Greetings from Asbury Park, Working on a Dream, Ghost of Tom Joad, The Promise, High Hopes, Letter to You, Lucky Town, Devils & Dust, Ties That Bind (River outtakes), Western Stars, Only The Strong Survive, We Shall Overcome
Cool, thanks for the show and info on The Promise. Looking forward to seeing Bruce and the E Street band for the first time at Wrigley this year. Here's my ranking of the 12 I've listened to: 1 Darkness on the Edge of Town 2 Born to Run 3 Letter to You 4 The Rising 5 The River 6 Born in the U.S.A 7 The Wild, The Innocent, & the E Street Shuffle 8 High Hopes 9 Tunnel of Love 10 Wrecking Ball 11 Nebraska 12 Western Stars
1) darkness 2) born to run 3)born in the usa 4) the river 5) the rising 6) wild innocent e street shuffle. 7) greetings from asbury park. Thats abt it for me
Nice job, Pete! Very insightful. Tunnel would be higher for me. I dig The Promise too. Can’t listen to Glory Days anymore, but still like the rest of USA. I’ve heard you talk about The Rising before. Your reviews of that album have solidified it for me as a great one!
I understand Bruce Springsteen is iconic but I only know the popular songs they played on radio. I never knew blinded by the light was Springsteen, I always kinda liked that tune. I'm from PA right on NJ border less than 2 hours from NYC and he was one of those artists that everyone in the area loved especially older people like my parents so I stayed away. However I have been trying to expand my musical tastes and have actually discovered I like a bit of that music from my parents generation I'd have turned my nose at. Next time I'm in the mood to explore I'll check out Pete's top 2 I'd be more likely to enjoy those possibility. Thanks to Pete and everyone who's puts this together for helping me expand my musical tastes. If I weren't struggling to stay afloat financially I'd contribute.
Great ranking Pete. I love Candy's Room and way the Max plays the super fast Hi-hat symbols in the beginning then suddenly Stevie V comes in with that super sharp riff, or it could be Bruce, I'm not sure but that song is great.
Been waiting for this one! Springsteen was always one of my favorites. My top 5 would be 1. Born to Run 2. Darkness on the Edge 3. Tunnel of Love 4. The River 5. Born in the USA
Kinda agree for the most. Nowadays I would put the Seeger Sessions higher, I bought it when it was released, listened to it, put it in the shelf and let it sit there for some years. But then I digitized my collection and listened to that album again and really liked it (and the DVD that come with it). Totally agree on Only the Strong Survive, might even rank it higher, his vocal performance is one of his best. And the vibe of that album reminds me quite a bit of his early records. Born in the USA might go even lower in my ranking for the exact same reasons. Heard it so often, I never have to listen to it again. Plus the acoustic version of the title track is so much better and much more fitting.
An amusing story about Born in the USA... Just like everybody else I knew around 7 songs from this album inside out back in my teens in the mid80s due to the heavy radio play and the music videos being on a lot on the music channels here in Europe. I never owned the actual album, but ended up with most of those songs on a C-tape. Then one day about ten years ago I heard, for the first time ever, Cover Me. I don't remember how I heard it, must have been on the internet since I practically never listen to the radio or watch telly anymore. I was flabbergasted that this gem had eluded me all these decades from this blockbuster album...! So, so good!! And My Hometown belongs in a group of songs from my teens that will make me emotional as soon as I hear it. The only two albums by Bruce that I've ended up owning on CD and have listened to a lot over the years from start to finish are Nebraska and 'Darkness' - love them both equally!
Some great stuff with/without his band Tone. When Just As I Thought came out (1979) it really grabbed me & set me off to research his older stuff: Forest Of Feelings, Transformation, Dance Of The Age Of Enlightenment, True Stories (The Bridge was too jazz for me, as was Cinema & Live In The Now). That Chris Squire Tribute album he participated in in 2018 (A Life In Yes) is good. Also great work on Santana's Beyond Appearances. He's guested on so many albums, a truly world-class keyboard player and guitarist

Great video as always, not questioning the ranking as we all see it different. Just curious that you added The Promise but not Tracks the box set or at least the single album 18 Tracks from that box set, what was the thought there?Great content as always, was just curious. Thanks for the videos
Official studio album releases is what he was aiming for And to him he just had the promise because it was almost like it. It's his created list in his ranking it's not an official used one at all.
Been on a Springsteen kick again recently, so a good time to go over my own personal top 10 albums by the Boss 1. The River 2. Darkness on the Edge of Town 3. Born to Run 4. Nebraska 5. Tunnel of Love 6. Born in the USA 7. The Rising 8. Working on a Dream 9. Letter to You 10. Lucky Town I'm not usually a fan of his acoustic/harmonica stuff either, but I just love Nebraska for some reason, probably because Highway Patrolman is on there, one of my favourite tracks from him ever.
Thanks for this Pete! Been waiting for this one for a long time. Long time fan. Knowing you, completely get where you’re coming from, and like how you always state, it’s all a personal opinion and why music is great. My major disagreement is “We Shall Overcome” absolutely love his arrangements and think “American Land” is a top 5 Bruce song. Where I REALLY agree with you is Western Stars. I just don’t get it…at all. Only album I really get nothing from. Have to keep on trying. Lol. Best wishes and thanks again Pete !
I tried to complete a top 10 but I couldn't - Bruce is like Neil Young to me - I like my handful of studio LPs , I'm more than a greatest hits fan of both but if I did a Top 10 I would just be throwing Lps onto the list just to bulk it out.I also , because I own the "Tracks" box set , prefer a number of tracks on that album to some of the tracks which ended up on the finished LPs.Also, IMO, Bruce should never be let loose with an acoustic guitar - I made it, once, just, through "Nebraska". Top 5 1.Born In The U.S.A - My first experience of Bruce when I was 9 years old and my Dad brought home that LP and played it constantly throughout that summer. 2.Darkness On The Edge Of Town - Just for the blistering intro to "Adam Raised A Cain" alone makes it memorable. But "Candy's Room", the title track, "Badlands" "Streets Of Fire" I ain't complaining. 3.,The Rising - Maybe a couple of tracks too long perhaps. But I played it a lot when it came out.The last album of his that I like. 4.Born To Run - About half I love - the rest I don't mind. 5.The River - Again listening to the Tracks LP he left a lot of better songs off of the released LP. - Always liked "The Ties That Bind" though.
1. Born To Run 2. (tie) The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, Born in the USA 4.Tunnel Of Love 5. Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ 6. The River 7. Darkness on the Edge of Town 8. Tracks 9. Nebraska 10. Western Stars
I can get with his list, top to bottom. For me, born to run just edges out darkness for number 1. Why? The back to back combo of meeting across the River and jungleland. I just think that putting them back to back was simple, yet amazing. Thanks Pete, as always
Pete love your channel can I make a suggestion on the squares on Monday could you do a show on top 10 greatest cd's or albums. Example Beatles Sargt. Pepper, Springstein Born in the USA the groups greatest cd or album that people would say is their icon album.
@@anthonyzurro3182 problem is, what and how do you declare what are the GREATEST metal CDs? It's all up to the individual to decide that. We've already done many variations on our favorite albums of all time by genre on the various shows, and by specific bands.
I was lucky enough to grow up listening to Springsteen on my way to school every morning on my walkman. Top 5 for me has to be: 1. The E street Shuffle 2. The River 3. Born in the USA 4. Darkness on the Edge of town 5. Born To Run
A good ranking of his catalog . I , too , flip flop between those 2 , on my favourite album by him . I was lucky enough to see him on his 1978 tour for Darkness on the Edge of Town . It remains one of the top 3 concerts that I've ever seen . He had Maple Leaf Gardens on it's feet for most of the 4 hours that he and the band played , finishing , of course , with the classic Detroit Medley . They played Because the Night , and Fire , from The Promise album as well . Anyway , I will give my top 10 ranking in order of preference : Darkness on the Edge of Town Born to Run The River The Wild , the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle Born in the USA Greetings from Asbury Park Magic The Promise The Rising Human Touch Thanks !!
Like a lot of legendary artists, Springsteen’s reputation really rests on a handful of records, in his case from the mid ‘70s to mid ‘80s. My top 5… 1. ‘Nebraska’ 2. ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’ 3. ‘The River’ 4. ‘Born to Run’ 5. ‘Tunnel of Love’
I first got into Bruce Springsteen in 1980. ‘The River’ was the new album. I heard the title track on the radio and ‘Point Blank’ ‘Fade Away’ ‘Jackson Cage’ & ‘Ties That Band’. I was hooked after that and picked the debut, and David Sancious’s playing & ‘The Wild And The Innocent’.. like the debut the loser feel of Mad Dog Lopez’s drumming. Talking about rare covers,David Bowie covered ‘Saint In The City’. I read that Bruce & The E Street Band recorded full band versions of the ‘Nesbraska’ songs & if that’s true, I hope these recordings come out soon. ‘If I Was The Priest’ got a legitimate release but I hope the original version comes out. The Tracks Boxset featured some top flight outtakes, like ‘Hey Santa Ana’, very welcome additions. Useful to compile a fans view of what the fantasy album between Born To Run & Darkness.. might have sounded like. ‘Roulette’ ‘Be True’ from The River era outtakes ,ended up a Bsides.
I had been waiting for this a long time. He has always been my favourite songwriter/performer. Truly a living legend. I love all his records, any musical style, whatever he did. Long live Bruce, with and without the E Street Band.
Thanks for this show, Pete. I had all the albums up to The River, then checked out when Born in the USA got hugely popular. Hadn't gone back to listen to any of his music for decades and wasn't aware he had released that many albums since then. I checked out "Letter to You" and was fully expecting to be bored and turn it off after a few tunes but I think it's a great album! All the classic elements are there - the ringing guitar, piano, organ, sax, production... and the melodies are strong. Don't know what I'll find with the other albums I missed but this one is great.
19.High Hopes 18.Devils and Dust 17.Human Touch 16 Working on a Dream 15 Western Stars 14 Wrecking Ball 13 Ghost of Tom Joad 12 Lucky Town 11 Letter to You 10 Magic 9 Wild and the Innocent 8 Greetings from Asbury Park 7 The Rising 6 Tunnel of Love 5 The River 4 Nebraska 3 Born in the USA 2 Darkness on the Edge Of Town 1 Born to Run
Though I'm not a Springsteen fan; I realize there's a lotta love for that "early" Jersey style/attitude that Bruce represented @ one time + his songwriting odes to folk. He just never connected with me. Although Pete isn't a fan of Mellencamp or Seger( I'd reach for one of their offerings first), & to me.... the short catalog of Ritchie Sambora is a brighter/bluesier musical expression of music minus the political rhetoric(the man -vs- what's morphed into the agenda laden "every man"). I do on occasion spin the True E-street band offerings.... The Wild & The Innocent, E-Street shuffle or more mainstream, Born In The USA.
Same here, Seger first than Mellencamp and Jackson Browne. Springsteen is my least liked artist, even coming after Rush, but Pete has such a love for music that I can still watch and enjoy these videos. It teaches me why I may dislike the artist but shows me why others do.
There is a quality gap between his big classics and his later albums, that are probably first and foremost made for the fans. I find a lot of these later albums quite good in general, yet I find myself hardly ever listening to them because his 70s/80s period stands out so immensely. So I always consider ranking albums like The Rising oder Letter to you much higher than I actually do when I think of it. My top albums would be: 1. Darkness on the Edge of Town 2. Born to Run 3. Born in the USA 4. The River 5. Nebraska 6. Tunnel of Love Anything else is not bad, but it's not up there for me.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Not my style. Too jazzy maybe, though I like some Jazz music. There's just something there that makes me lose attention. I dislike Sandy more than anything he's done.
I can appreciate your rankings, although I love the lower albums ranked. You approach Springsteen in the same way I approach the Grateful Dead. My favorite Dead albums are some of the lowest ranked of Deadheads. Hey we all love music right? I respect the list.
Great show Pete! It sounds like you've maybe gained an appreciation for some of the more acoustic Springsteen albums, even if they aren't your kind of thing. Howdy Pete, how about a ranking of the albums of Anthony Gomes (he has an impressive discography) and Matt o'Ree (like Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi from New Jersey). I don't think that you ever discussed those guys. To be perfectly honest I only recently "discovered" tehm
Being from Long Branch, NJ (3 miles from Asbury Park), I lived Bruce, especially because my sister loved the band. Sadly, I lost all desire to keep up with his stuff after Born To Run. But Greetings, The Wild & Born were amazing.
Same here, maybe we were too close to the Boss fanatics. Grew up in Holmdel, knew where he lived for a bit. Would see him in his 57 Chevy. Hung out in Sea Bright & LB. Rented a place on West End Ave. Heard the Brighton Bar is no longer. Now it’s all big fat & sassy. Shame
@@samanthab1923 I went to college with a bunch of 'Boss fanatics' (SUNY in the late 70's/early 80's). Other than a few hits that I knew from radio I didn't really get the appeal back then - "Born To Run" was a big exception, that song instantly caught my ear. And a little later hearing the original "Blinded By The Light". The whole "savior of rock" hype also didn't sit well with me. I get it now...

Saw him last night in State College, he was phenomenal. He’s almost 74 years old, plays 3 hrs with no break, goes right into the encores and that particular band he has backing him? They’re no slouches either.
His tickets are not expensive if you consider how long he plays for;
@@donakin8562 It all depends on how much Ticketmaster screws you.

Tunnel, Nebraska, and Born in the USA, along with sections from his Tracks compilation are my favorites. It’s so cool he’s got so much for each of us to like. Thanks for the video.
Pete has acoustic phobia
Born In The USA is an absolute classic, I don’t care how commercial it was, way way better than Greetings From Astbury Park, he sounds like he doesn’t even know what he’s doing yet, in fact I’d put it Born In The USA at number one, I’m playing it right now, every song is so good
I so agree about Letter to You…I actually received it on vinyl…I think it’s a perfect album!
Putting Working On A Dream ahead of Tunnel Of Love and Nebraska is hilarious😂😂😂
Born In The USA and Born To Run are my favorite albums by him. I was born in the same year "Born In The USA" came out in. So, I'm the same age as the album. Yes, I will include Born In The USA next year as one of my picks for albums that turn 40 in 2024. My Mom and Dad had "Born In The USA" on cassette, but they lost it.
My favourite album is Live Anthology 1975-1985 ... a brillant Masterpiece. A Music Genius, fantastic lyrics and a Band on Fire ... thank you for the soundtrack of my life, Bruce
And thanks to you Pete, for you fantastic Show - you make a lot of people's Lifes better 😊

I'm a hillbilly and those acoustic instruments are right up my alley!!!
Bruce visited Clarence shortly before he died, and played "Land of Hope and Dreams" on his guitar for him. It was the last time they saw each other.
I would rank them as follows:
1)Born In The USA
2)Born To Run
3)Greeting From Ashbury Park
4)The Wild the innocent...
5)Darkness At The Edge Of Town
6)The River
I kind of stopped following his albums after "Born In The USA" but he did have some amazing hits after that with "Philadelphia"And "Tunnel of Love".
I’ve waited a long time for this video

This may not mean much to folks outside the UK, but here goes. I wanted to check why John Peel really did not like Bruce Springsteen and I found this quote:
"It utterly mystifies me.
1. Born To Run [the first album I heard when a friend home on college break put it on and said the infamous "You have GOT to hear this."
Appreciate you taking the time to listen to all these and rank 'em as you hear 'em.
great video - thanks 🙂
I own all his records, but it's the earlier tuff for me that'll always be the finest, and The River is one of my top 10 all-time albums.

We need a David Sancious show! (Ranking the Albums, In the Prog Seat or 4Fusion Friday)

Top 5
1.Born In The U.S.A - My first experience of Bruce when I was 9 years old and my Dad brought home that LP and played it constantly throughout that summer.
2.Darkness On The Edge Of Town - Just for the blistering intro to "Adam Raised A Cain" alone makes it memorable. But "Candy's Room", the title track, "Badlands"
"Streets Of Fire" I ain't complaining.
19 Joad, 18 Nebraska, 17 Tunnel of Love
Dude, you're killing me.
1. Born To Run
2. (tie) The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, Born in the USA
4.Tunnel Of Love
5. Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ
6. The River
7. Darkness on the Edge of Town
8. Tracks
9. Nebraska
Problem is, the HVS are mostly metal fans.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Ok great do the show with the greatest metal cd's and albums.
@@anthonyzurro3182 problem is, what and how do you declare what are the GREATEST metal CDs? It's all up to the individual to decide that. We've already done many variations on our favorite albums of all time by genre on the various shows, and by specific bands.
Your list is your list.God love you for it.I totally would put Nebraska in the top 3,but that's me.
I was lucky enough to grow up listening to Springsteen on my way to school every morning on my walkman. Top 5 for me has to be:
1. The E street Shuffle
2. The River
3. Born in the USA
4. Darkness on the Edge of town
Anyway , I will give my top 10 ranking in order of preference :
Darkness on the Edge of Town
Born to Run
The River
The Wild , the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle
Born in the USA
Greetings from Asbury Park
Magic
The Promise
The Rising
Human Touch
Thanks !!
Darkness is my favorite too. Good choice.
Like a lot of legendary artists, Springsteen’s reputation really rests on a handful of records, in his case from the mid ‘70s to mid ‘80s. My top 5…
1. ‘Nebraska’
2. ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’
3. ‘The River’
4. ‘Born to Run’
5. ‘Tunnel of Love’
Your top two are my top 2 excellent Pete!
You got the top three right. I'd have those three in a different order, but it is those three.
Great list and one I largely agree with. Have same top 5 and for me WIESS is number 1.
"Working Class Dog" is my #1.
@@garyjoyce2160 😬
"On the Dark Side" is his best song!
@@thatdannykelly4503 Yes! I love that one almost as much as that avatar.
@@independenceltd. Best "worst" album cover ever.
Not a Bruce fan at all, but can appreciate Nebraska for what it is. That album is legit.
Despite being a metalhead, Nebraska is my favourite. Its such a dark album.
I had been waiting for this a long time. He has always been my favourite songwriter/performer. Truly a living legend. I love all his records, any musical style, whatever he did. Long live Bruce, with and without the E Street Band.
I loved The Rising when I got it after reading Rolling Stones 5 star review. Haven't listened to it in 20 years.
Also the box set "Tracks" worth checking out!!!
I have it-really good!
19.High Hopes
18.Devils and Dust
17.Human Touch
16 Working on a Dream
15 Western Stars
14 Wrecking Ball
13 Ghost of Tom Joad
12 Lucky Town
11 Letter to You
10 Magic
9 Wild and the Innocent
8 Greetings from Asbury Park
7 The Rising
6 Tunnel of Love
5 The River
4 Nebraska
3 Born in the USA
2 Darkness on the Edge Of Town
1 Born to Run
If we’re ranking tracks it’s somewhere between 8-12. If I were to rank Seger Sessions I agree on last place
Streets of Philadelphia is one of my fav Springsteen songs. Bought the single as soon as it came out, then the soundtrack.
yea the drums on it really make it stand out in his catalog. he never did anything like it before
Though I'm not a Springsteen fan; I realize there's a lotta love for that "early" Jersey style/attitude that Bruce represented @ one time + his songwriting odes to folk.
@@aldebaran4154 In total agreement!
My top albums would be:
1. Darkness on the Edge of Town
2. Born to Run
3. Born in the USA
4. The River
5. Nebraska
6. Tunnel of Love
Anything else is not bad, but it's not up there for me.
You're definitely underrating 'Wild & Innocent'. I think it's clearly better than Tunnel of Love or Nebraska.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Not my style. Too jazzy maybe, though I like some Jazz music. There's just something there that makes me lose attention. I dislike Sandy more than anything he's done.
1 : Darkness On The Edge Of Town'
2: The River
3: Born to run
4: The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle
5: Born in the USA
Born in the USA
I can appreciate your rankings, although I love the lower albums ranked. You approach Springsteen in the same way I approach the Grateful Dead. My favorite Dead albums are some of the lowest ranked of Deadheads. Hey we all love music right? I respect the list.
Great show Pete! It sounds like you've maybe gained an appreciation for some of the more acoustic Springsteen albums, even if they aren't your kind of thing. "If I Should Fall Behind" is a way better song when performed live with the E Street Band.
My top ten:
1. Born To Run
2. Darkness on The Edge of Town
3. Nebraska
4. The Wild, The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle
5. The River
6. Tunnel of Love
7. The Rising
8. Letter To You
9. Born In The USA
10. Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ
Agree, we used it at our wedding as my bride was walking down the aisle, perfect.
Top 5:
The River
The Rising
Born To Run
The Wild The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle
Tunnel Of Love
HM: Wrecking Ball
Bruce was at his best when with Clemons together they really rocked
@@wolf1977 Gotcha, feel the same about Bruce now. 👋
Great list. Agree with others that TOL should be higher. Also, Nebraska is in top 5 for me.
I never really got into Bruce but it’s har to argue with your top 4.
