    Benchmark backpacker used to be made of 1095. Today you can only get it in 440A, which despite what people will say about it, is a perfectly serviceable material. Highly corrosion resistant (unlike the 1095, which is great stuff, but it rusts) and easy to sharpen. It makes sense that they would opt for stainless, as the blade in question is not a hard use wilderness fixed blade. Rather an easy to carry small utility knife for EDC, or casual "backpacking".

    Absolutely love my Bradford Guardian3. Need to buy some of the crushed carbon fiber handles Bradford sells from his site now. If that one is made in China, then it probably is 420HC. They don't handle much 1095. 420HC can be good steel though, other than Buck, probably most often used for folding knife liners.

    I enjoyed your video, and checked out the CRKT Mossback, but went with the Schrade SCHF55 as it was cheaper at the time. But I still might get one later. I appreciate you presenting it as I was unaware of the model.
    I own the CRKT Minimalist with that little braided thong and when I grip it with my pinky finger it feels good, but I attribute it more to psychological security. I have found that for me, most neck knife handles are just too small for a secure grip. So while I have larger blades and folders, for daily carry (Legal fixed blade) I am glad there are some 3.5 and 3.1 inch blades paired with a 4-inch handle.

    • @DZNTZ

      Try the new Flytanium scales for the Minimalist - game changer. I carry it a LOT with the new scales, it fills the hand while staying tiny. I like it because it’s light enough for shorts or joggers.

    • @gryphon37
      @gryphon37 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Eskabar has to be one of the most underrated edc fixed blades out there.
      I spent the money on the aftermarket handle scales (knife connection) and sheath. After that, it's a perfect user. They can do any daily task , and take a ton of abuse as well. Easy to sharpen, and takes a keen edge that lasts. I don't ever forsee destroying it, but even if I did.... It's only 40 dollars.
      Bk-14 all the way.

    Hear that awesome sound the gerber makes when it goes in and out of the sheath? Yeah, that's the blade scraping on those metal retention pieces... swing and a miss, Gerber

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't found a problem with the Gerber, which is weird because I've hated every knife Gerber has ever made until this one. It's an EXCELLENT knife. Even if there is a problem with the edge rubbing the retention studs, which I haven't noticed, this knife is more than worth putting in a new sheath.
      For me, Kydex, and imitation Kydex, belongs on a neck knife, anyway, not on a belt knife. Leather works much better for a belt knife, at least with one this size and shape. It takes very little money, very little skill, and very little time to make a top quality leather sheath for this knife, and as I said, it's more than worth it.

      @Player_Review 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Parent From what I gather, many people do stake their lives on TOPS. Their catalog is amazingly diverse. One could collect _only_ TOPS knives and have a really stellar showcase with knives for every purpose. The fact that every single knife gets personal attention really closes the deal. Not some production plant where stuff just happens, instead a bunch of people all throughout the process making sure each blade comes off the line perfected.

    Tip: If you've only ever carried a folder be careful. My first time carrying a small fixed blade I "sheathed" it into my hand and damn that hurt.
    I've carried knives all my knife and never got cut before but of course a small fixed blade is very different. Oddly that not only never happened with my folders it never happened with large fixed blades.

    Taste varies with the individual. None of those knives would be in my top one hundred, let alone my top ten, but my guess is none of my top ten would be to your liking, either.

    I have that gerber knife but mine has a defect that causes a burr in the blade. It hits something in sheath
