  • Changing the stator on a 2004 CBR 1000RR. A chronic problem on modern sportbikes. It isn't always necessary to change the control unit and/or the battery. Also, if the bike is kept level on a track stand there is very little oil loss!!!, so no need to drain all the oil unless you are doing an oil change as well. If you have questions I will be glad to answer.

    Good vid. I had a stator bolt work loose and grind on the flywheel, bent and trashed the bolt, made a terrible noise and stopped the bike. I thought major mechanical problem but the bike only has 15k miles on it. Id recommend the threadlock in hindsight.

    Thanks for the reply, appreciate it. I didn't mean grease, I meant engine oil, don't know why I said that.
    How essential is the threadlock? Might have to go and get some of that too...
    I have gone and got a new box connector, looking forward to getting this job done when the new gasket arrives. I thought it would be a load cheaper to do this job myself but there are so many added things besides the part!

    Hello..I just bought a 2007 cbr 1000rr with 17,500 miles on it,,, it has a power commander 3 and a dyno jet ignition module with a full k&r exhaust. the bike stays in a garage .. so when i try to start the bike it starts and then shuts off it takes 2 or 3 attempts before it stays running i changed the battery the bike started right up 2 days later it did it again after trying to start it.i had riden the bike about 30 miles and the bike started after acouple of attempts pepole said to change the battery so i did but ..not so lucky would the stator cause that to happen. have any ideas ? Thank You and that was a great video replacing the stator

    GOOD POINT. I recommend using threadlock permatex blue (gel) about $22 a tube. But even then I've found the threadlock can fail after about 9 years (outdoor weathering). Anyway, NO Serious damage, thats good.

    Yea, I told him to check all fuses. And yes, some are very hard to find. It seems as though the problem was the STARTER not the stator. And apparently it clicked the relay closed but the starter wouldn't turn, so last I checked he was buying a new starter which seems logical. Yes, especially when jump-starting from a car you can burn a fuse easy.

    If you get any gasket maker in the bolt holes, you will get leaks. It's best to use Honda bond 4 with your bolds slightly screwed into place, apply a small amount around the INSIDE of each bolt hole, careful to not place it inside of them, then make a small bead completely around the opening, remove your bolts and make sure they are free of the gasket material, then affix your cover in a very straight on manner, being ready to put a bolt in the top, then the middle, then the bottom, near hand tight.

    Just did my ZX10. Way too easy to do. Works fine fully charging. I went with the Caltric brand b/c I read way too many negative post on Rick's. Hopefully it will last some time. The construction seems solid & looks, feel exactly like the OEM I pulled out.

    Hey mate, thanks for the vid. Is it necessary to grease it up before installing the new one? I'm hopefully going to replace mine sometime this weekend. Got the shop to diagnose whilst it had a service and they confirmed it was my alternator that was the problem. Also, the person before me soldered the wires straight together, is that a bad idea? Should I re-instate a box-connector set-up?

  • @SouthbaySPEED
    @SouthbaySPEED  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, there should be. Don't forget to top-off the oil when your done. It's normal to drip out 4 or 5 ounces, maybe more if using the kickstand. Hows the battery voltage?.

  • @SouthbaySPEED
    @SouthbaySPEED  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    #1 Contact the dealer if it's convenient, there was a recall for up to six years but if it's a 2005 thats a long-shot since it's 2013 now.
    #2 Get a digital voltmeter as in the video and test as in the video.
    #3 The stator is built small and lightweight and easy to replace, when you use gasket-maker take care not to get into bolt or "screw" holes.
    #4 The dealer will charge between $600-$900 to replace this.
    #5 Go back to step #2. Remember Harbor freight and tool has digital voltmters fr chips

  • @SouthbaySPEED
    @SouthbaySPEED  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your wrong, I just looked into it, they increased it 6 years its a 04+1+6=2011. The video was made in 2012. There constantly changing there mind. New honda CBR is one year unlimited miles. Also; when did they start? 2007?. I had already replaced at least one by then!!!. The only reasonable thing they recalled was the TACHOMETER/MPH cluster.

  • @SouthbaySPEED
    @SouthbaySPEED  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    From what you say I would check ALL fuses. Especially since you were doing some electrical work, it's easy to short one out. Is it a 1000RR?. Because it runs a system check while the tachometer sweeps and returns. The pump primes?, I'm guessing a fuse, maybe fuel injection, maybe ignition. It can't be much, it was running fine before the painting.

    I buy a new stator for my Cbr1000rr 2004 from electrosport but the external diameter is 3 millimeter smaller than the old one can I install it?

    • @SouthbaySPEED
      @SouthbaySPEED  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure you got the rite one. Yes, smaller will fit on, larger will NOT. A good idea to use blue thread lock on bolts when you tighten them down. I haven’t heard of electrosport, I hope it works, 3mm isn’t much, it may have been designed that way. Lots of aftermarket parts fit slightly different, good luck.

  • @SouthbaySPEED
    @SouthbaySPEED  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Buy thread-lock and keep with wrenches, Honda's don't vibrate excessively so if it's already together it will be o.k., but start using it on all vehicles. Especially motorcycles.

  • @SouthbaySPEED

    You can try taking it apart and cleaning it. Otherwise, for that I would buy a new one OEM. Also, fix it, don't ride with short-circuit issues like that. The headlight on the CBR is very important for safety, trust me.

    Since there was a recall for the stator years ago, do we place it with the same part or an upgraded Stator?

    • @SouthbaySPEED
      @SouthbaySPEED  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      UPGRADED STATOR, when an upgraded part comes out the old part number will usually be replaced by a new part number automatically; however, make sure you get the upgraded stator. GOOD POINT, make sure you get the UPGRADED STATOR😎.

      Yes, normal to lose a half quart of oil when removing this, maybe a little more if bike is leaned to the left on kick-stand. Check oil when finished, don’t over-fill,

      No lube involved, you probably mean gasket-maker, yea if you don’t have a new gasket you can put a thin layer of silicon gasket maker on the cover, those parts fit together within 1mm of each other so it’s not likely to leak when your done, good luck

    Not sure why you paid for a new stator, the 04 Honda CBR1000 has a recall on the stators, took mine to the dealer and got it replaced for free. Now if Honda would recall the stupid start button, mine has a flimsy tin contact that no longer seats correctly and causes my headlinght not to turn on...why is a headlight circuit tied to the start button????

  • @maykosilva7260

    If the stator is fried , the fuel pump will still priming???

    • @SouthbaySPEED
      @SouthbaySPEED  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fuel pump works off the battery, an acceptable battery is 12.4 volts. So even with a “fried” stator the bike should still start and run for a short time, maybe 10+ minutes. When you first turn the key there is a whining high pitch sound, that high pitch sound is the fuel pump. Good luck.

    If the stator cover is not put on properly, can it leak oil? Mine leaks oil when I run the bike

    • @SouthbaySPEED
      @SouthbaySPEED  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely should not leak oil. That's why I clean surfaces, don't score the metal and use silicone high temp gasket maker. Or clean and use a new gasket. You will need to take off and fix, sorry mate.

    • @SouthbaySPEED
      @SouthbaySPEED  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @SouthbaySPEED

      It’s a messy job, use a track stand if you can. You will spill about 1 quart so have a roll of paper towels handy. Use permatex blue threadlock on those Bolts holding the new stator to the cover. Enjoy, this is a relatively easy stator to change-out. Struggling with the fairing and those horrible plastic clips holding it on is probably the most frustrating thing.

    • @boomergajunera7158
      @boomergajunera7158 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SouthbaySPEED Thanks man. Wow that's a lot of oil. Yeah, I already got my permatex and what I was thinking is to use a RTV high temp silicone once done. Yup I also got my track stand as well. I hope it will work well. I appreciated it. That was a quick reply. Stay safe and will keep you updated. :)

    The starter, ok, so the bike was getting electrical power but the starter not working. Ok, so you can try replacing the starter solenoid/relay first because there only about $40. The motor is over $300!. Also, if the relay/stator was working you should have heard a light clicking noise.

    I can't understand. #1 make sure battery is stable at 12.4v minimum after charge, don't guess, check it. This is one of the most difficult things to teach a new mechanic/do-it-yourself/shade tree mech. #2 Clean connections, and check for any loose connections or shorts. #3 You will need a new battery about every 2 years!!!. Triple check yourself on number #1. #4 What happens when you press the starter???

    Nothing at all?. No lights on instrument cluster?. Tachometer doesn't sweep through then go back to zero?. Then check the relay/solenoid, if it doesn't close then no electrical power will flow to the bike. Relay/solenoid is used to simplify electrical wiring and reduce the length of wire for high-current use items like starters etc.. Are you sure there is nothing?

    #1 No grease involved. Only gasket maker, and permatex blue (thread lock) for the bolt threads, the engine oil loss is minimal.
    #2 Strange the connector was spliced off???. Very odd, Those connectors keep moisture and corrosion out. Keep in mind the stator/alternator needs replacement about every 12,000 miles and that box makes things a lot easier. Someone probably got hold of the wrong stator and improvised.
    #3 I would put the box back on but it will work just fine soldering/twisting/elect tape
