@@sprickenvilleI understand. Perlman is very good at artistic expression and in this piece his violin just sings. However, the entrance to the Brahms’s has very little room for rubato or phrasing differences, so the trade off is that the timing is off I think.

I studied with Theodora McMillan who was the first woman to play with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. Nathan's version was her all-time favorite. The version that I first came to love was Nigel Kennedy's, and it might have been because it was filmed more like a music video, which after listening to countless recordings in the Music Library, was just more accessible to my beginner ears at the time. It would be interesting to know what violins each performer is playing. I think the violins of David Oistrakh and Sergey Khachatryan were very similar. I think if Hilary were playing Paganini's Guarneri all this time instead of her Villaume she wouldn't have to struggle so hard to avoid being buried by loud orchestras and would have more nuance in her playing.

The New York classical station had a program, unsure if it's still running, called Reflections from the Keyboard, where they would air back to back recordings of the same movement or piece as the central part of the show, for the listener's comparison and analysis (albeit piano and not violin). I was always impressed that in the days before youtube, on-demand content, and easy research, a major radio station would air essentially the same music 3, 4, sometimes nearly 10 times in a row, as a featured program, every day I believe...when I was a little kid I never understood the concept but once I started studying music it became my favorite program for its invaluable insights. Now we are privileged to have all this content at our fingertips all the time.

J.Fisher , B , Kim , F.P.Zimmerman. D .Garrett. N.Milstein . Вторая группа , где доминанта левая рука ,можно отнести: А.Наdelich , J.Jansen , S. Khachatryan , D .Oistrakh , Y.Menuhin , S. Shoji ,J .Heifetz ,V .Gluzman ,M. Vengerov . Y. Chien .

Did a blind test only looking at the names after listening.
First, I don't understand Hadelich's justification for holding no note to the full length. Really fluffy, no intensity or purpose. I was so confused.. lol
Hahn 2012 was so crisp. Not much growth though. The intensity died off toward the end, but it was really good.
Zimmermann - instructive for tone and technical note length and style.
Julia Fischer and gluzman, wow! The fire!
Milstein - on another level with forward motion and purpose.
Heifetz - the ONLY one I immediately knew by tone production, forward motion, and clarity. Enough said?
But atop them all .... David Oistrakh.. like a storm. Unstoppable musicianship, superior tone production, perfect motion of the more decorative notes and chords, and growth of intensity like no other. Jaw dropping.
    Fantastic video, thank you!
One last note... Szeryng must be added! His is one of the pinnacle Brahms performances.

Not a fan usually of Milstein's Brahms, but the entrance sure is epic, doesn't stop and goes straight to the high c from the beginning. True fire. A lot of these are very good on the technical side but lack fire, Oistrakh as well I might say

According to me (but certainly not only me), the *greatest* rendition of this concerto was by Ginette Neveu in 1948 with Isserstedt as conductor. So, a comparison without including that (even if there is no visual material to show), is imho not at all complete.

For me Nathan Milstein is always going to be the most perfect violinist overall. However, the winner for Brahm's Entrace goes to Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. 2nd- Bomsori Kim & Maxim Vengerov

Interesting, I liked Hahn's rendition and Julia Fischer and Milstein and some of Handelich. However, they all more or less sound exactly the same. Hahn's and Fischer are kind of the right emotion for me and Milstein along with Garrett have a certain quality of authenticity in and of themselves and Handelich added a nuance I never heard before and it was interesting.

These are all at an extremely high level. Artistically I gravitate toward Hahn 2021. But I have to agree with some others here - Milstein just stands out. That drive! That huge line! It's almost a different dimension of playing, at least in this short selection.

I’m not fond of these comparisons bc they neglect so much context - the hall acoustics, the overall interpretation/performance of soloist & orchestra and how they accommodate each other; the bow they use and instrument they play. In a live performance all this and more influence my musical experience. Sometimes I’m blown out of mind. Other times, That was nice.
I saw several performances of the Brahms and Perlman knocked me out. His sound, his power, what he brought out the orchestra playing, was astounding. The string sections played 10x better than I heard all season. Call it inspiration. They lived up to their promise vs another evening of professionals turning in a very accomplished performance.
I’ll never forget that Sunday afternoon. In rehearsal he is known to call out, More Jewish, meaning lay on the verbrato, dig that bow in, make a BIG sound. LOL. Just love that intensity and music making. Does it make musicologists happy? 🤨 Does it make for a hell of a performance and electric experience? You bet.

However for my money it’s worth adding the full 2021 Vengerov video entrance th-cam.com/video/9L6a-JJCCzw/w-d-xo.html (around 3:30) as the standard setting performance matching passion with technical prowess.

I feel like I am not sophisticated enough to appreciate or even notice the different phrasing but I really feel like I liked Oistrakh the most. Sadly, I feel like the recording quality of the Jansen version biased me against her. Not her playing but the sound quality of that recording was not as good as the rest so hard to tell.
