- We put our long-term quad-motor Rivian R1T Launch Edition up against the Ford F-150 Raptor R and its roaring V8 to see which of these high-performance trucks is better suited to off-road conditions. We put the trucks through two races, testing their acceleration, stability at speed, and suspension. Will the high-tech Rivian outclass the old-school Raptor R?

How would you feel about off-roading in a R1T or other EV? Would you have range anxiety? Let us know in the comments.
Are there gas stations off road?
Please don't spill soda to test 😢 That is a horrible way to test. I had to skip that whole part.
This lady is my least favorite person in automotive videos. I watch a lot of car and truck content but it is so hard to watch anything she is part of.
Find a new driver…
I think it'd be a great way to be more connected with the terrain and appreciate the surroundings. After two EV's, range anxiety is pretty rare, more of a feeling of inconvenience. Like any vehicle, once you get familiar with it and know what to expect, it's not really an issue. Plus... the thing about EV's is there's always something you can do if range becomes an issue, reducing speed or turning down climate control can alleviate a misstep.
Cringed a bit too hard when you used soda. Save us car guys some anxiety and use water next time 😅
Exactly what I was gonna say.. lol
*truck guys* “oh no she got a little Dr. Pepper in a car owned by a manufacture. Manly grumble. Women know nothing.”
I'm guessing they used a diet soda. No sugar = less sticky residue
@@alexross4062 They did, she said diet Dr. Pepper.
Annoying test driver. A soda spill test? Soda? Really...come on.
I know right.. atleast get a blanket underneath.. The whole test, video was stupid
Plus her commentating style and voice are so annoying. Almost like a happy Karen..
She was trying way too hard
I had to put it on mute. She annoying asf
I stopped watching when she kept saying spinned instead of spun.
You lost me at the soda spill.
I couldn't even make it that far. I had to go back once I saw all the comments to see what everything was all about. Water? How about no spill test at all? I'm sure anyone who buys either of these trucks will either secure the lid or drink it all before doing those maneuvers. Shame...
Spilling your open-top Dr. Pepper all over the place has to be one of the dumbest "tests" I've ever seen...
Anything that involves Dr. Pepper is whisky tango… queue the Raptor.
Ya this is so stupid
Fans of Initial D would disagree with you
I thought it was pretty funny.
@@colbymag2053at least that was water… but this? good luck cleaning this up 🤦♂️
oh good lord that soda clean up is going to be awful.
I thought that was the stupidest, disrespectful thing ever. Even if you wanted to do a soda spill test there are better ways to do it than actually spilling soda over the interior.
At least it is diet so the sugar stickiness is reduced dramatically
@@kobayashimaru8114I was thinking the same thing. They could have done the exact same test but with water.
Same thought... I would fk you up if you spill soda in my truck. And shit, I don't even have a Raptor.
You really think they’re going to clean it themselves?! No!
Spilling pop all over the interior of two trucks on loan from the manufacturer to test. Ford and Rivian will be thrilled with you guys. Good luck getting future vehicles to test.
I’m pretty sure the Rivian is there’s, not sure about the Raptor
Theirs*
@@VNCTHE1 lol, autocorrect does me in
@@ericfhernandez Raptor isn't, they are fucked if Ford sees that shit.
Drive the trucks, have fun but the soda test could have been done far more logically (put the cup in a larger container to capture the spilled soda). I want reviews from people with good judgement.
wtf lmao
More logical would be to just use WATER!! And to place the cup the car's cup holder, where you would actually place the cup while driving!!
This test was so juvenile. A cup of plain water would be sufficient and accomplish the same outcome. Every time I unsubscribe from this channel for these sort of antics, and try to come back, they continue to disappoint with antics. Please stop Edmunds.
Ford suspension will be harsher at lowspeeds because it is designed for high speed desert driving and can handle all its weight from a jump. Rivian would be smoother at that test because it's a luxury car that is what they are good at.
Better yet, don't use soda, at least water is easier to clean up and if you miss a few spots it's not big deal as it will dry and still be clean, not the case with soda.
The Diet Coke test actually hurt me to watch. Wtf
I think it was Diet Dr. Pepper. You have to pay attention to the video if you are going to bad mouth it.
@@jeffscott2418Yes, the brand of soda was very important to his point. I mean Diet Coke would have been bad, whereas Diet Dr Pepper would have been bad.
Imagine if you actually aired down the tires like you should in an offered scenario
Imagine if they hired an actual professional driver instead of someone who acts like she has never driven off road before and has definitely never baja raced.
@@clothedandcompetent3452😂😂😂😂 I hate her with a passion! I look forward to these type of videos to help me on my next purchase. She is the worst ever
Good work, all those expensive electrical components are now soda soaked.

Most of these fancy trucks will be used for Mall crawling.
You mad you can’t afford one?
MallWheelDrive
Or to make it cleat you are driving home. I can hear my neighbor when he is driving back to his place. Lol massive off-road ties on pavement.
You mean like most traditional trucks are? The vast majority people never take trucks off road nor do they tow (63% of F150 drivers rarely or never tow). They are used to go to home depot and grab a few bags of mulch.
@@mikecoleman4628 And that's why they are so expensive for those of us that use them as trucks, not grocery grabbers.
I could not watch the soda in the raptor
Doing 100mph on a dirt road is insane.
Pure stupidity.
What's insane is that she wasn't wearing a helmet.
There is no comparison between the stability of a raptor off-road and a normal truck or SUV.
I do it every day
You strike me as a rivian type person 😂
You can explore in a Rivian without range anxiety because the longest unimproved dirt road between services in the lower 48 in this country is 130 miles. The R1T has a 300 mile range.
It never ceases to amaze me how many miles people think they drive compared to how many they actually drive.
I am willing to believe this but do you have a source?
@@grisa12345 Magruder Corridor.
Using what network? Electrify america? So many stories about those chargers bricking evs. Its just not true. Even if that doesnt happen there are countless stories of people just driving in the northeast and running into range issues.
@@davetek490 I've driven thousands of miles using Electrify America and never run into one that didnt work. Maybe it didn't charge as fast as it was supposed to, or a stall was out - yes - but it's not the end of the world. We'd all love for it to improve, but people make a mountain out of a molehill. Do you complain when you get to the gas station and a couple of the pumps aren't working, so you have to go to the other pumps? Kind of like that.
The 300 mile range is best case scenario. Offroading, even on mild surfaces, is still far from best case scenario. 300 mile range assumes you're carrying no gear, assumes tires are properly inflated, not aired down, assumes no mud or major tire spinning, assumes minimal friction, assumes that headwinds are minimal, assumes that its just you in the vehicle, assumes that you're not driving in the extreme heat or cold, assumes that it's not nighttime, raining, or both. Assumes you're not using the headlights. Etc. It amazes me that people like you just ignore that stuff, and think you will get what the sticker says in every situation.
Why would you choose the stiff suspension setting for these conditions? Edit: I was referring to the race where there don't seem to be many big bumps, not the whoops
Soft suspension would let it bottom out a lot harder. You need stiffer suspension to dampen the hits
Imagine if you actually took whoops fast like it's intended to
CHARGE THE RADIO BATTERIES BEFORE MAKING A VIDEO FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!
Yes, I am triggered by that damned low battery chirp after years of carrying one.
You should know this already but the F150 does over the air updates as well so you're not "stuck with the same car once you drive it off the lot"
Glad to see you back! By far the best photo channel online.
The Raptor has Over the air updates too.
You are correct, it updates its 8-track and wiper blades.
Ha ha. Lol! I work at a Ford dealership and all ford vehicles starting around 2019-2020 are capable of getting over the air updates. As long as the customer sets up their Ford Pass account.
They could but fundamentally the "updates" will be limited in what they actually do, because any major changes involve coordinating software between dozens of vendors that is nearly impossible for an OEM like Ford to coordinate in any reasonable amount of time, or for a reasonable amount of money. When Rivian wants to make a change, everything from top to bottom is pretty much in-house.
We have a long way to go before EVs completely eliminate the internal combustion engines. The electric infrastructure is not up to the task. We have blackouts in the summer when it gets to hit and everybody is running their AC. Just imagine what will happen when everybody plugs their cars in to charge them. Or when there is a huge traffic jam or wreck that stops traffic for a long period. People setting in their electric car running the AC or heater. Then the battery goes dead you can't just carry a can of electricity out the car. I'm not saying they won't eventually take over but we've got a ways to go. But one thing I agree on is those EVs are unbelievably quick.
@@brianfinley235 it's far from a "long way to go". There are some minor issues like charging but solar is a great fix for the individual on that, and you get a lot out of that investment not just for your car but your home obviously as well. Range with solid state batteries is insane in China and they're about to be here as well. That will be the nail in the coffin as we can then tow even further than gas with EV which is what's stopping me from buying an EV currently
Probably the best use of Diet Dr. Pepper I've ever seen and it still was a bad idea 😊.
I wheel modified Jeep TJs an JL Wranglers. I have a stock gladiator too. I bought a Rivian R1S and plan to wheel it at Rausch Creek in Pennsylvania eventually (keeping all the jeeps though). The Rivian is amazing on road. Should be fun off road too.
Would airing down the rivian tires helped?
Have you received your Cybertruck order invitation yet? I really want to see what it can do.
The soda test was so silly lol but I LOVE me some Emme Hall!!!!!!!
Schmidt's tunnel and the pumice Mines near red Rock canyon. Love those areas
Soda is sticky mess that will have the detailer presenting you with large bill😢
34" tires on r1t?
You could've just used water... that soda thing was the stupidest thing I've seen in a really long time.
Is it though? They got you to comment about it, which is what helps them. Seems like the smart choice afterall!
It’s funny how the Raptor completed the soda test way faster when you were supposedly going the same speed…
Editing... that's how show biz works
Lmfao this guy doesn't understand how video editing works🤣. Wait till he hears about slow motion videos.
Is be sooooooooo ticked off if you got Dr. Pepper all over my truck!
Very cool!
good test
Flat dry road, just wondering if Rivian had a better mode than rally. Or if rally could be modified: wheel response sensitivity, ride dampening, or a different tire type/size, tire compound/thread type/size. For the spill test, two plastic bottle gravity system like the radiator overflow. Less interior clean-up.
Yeah, seems like some tuning of the air suspension ride heights would help stability at high speeds on the dirt - a little nose-up to increase caster should help a lot.
I was more thinking of wider, lower pressured tires in conjunction with ride height adjustment settings.
Maybe in later revisions.
I’d start by not turning the traction control to reduced. She lifted because it was getting squirlly, 835hp to 100% independent wheels could do that. There is no differential between the drive lines so you really want the computers helping you out. All purpose might have been a better option as it provides more equal traction to all wheels where Rally biases to the rear wheels. You see evidence of this on the launch, the rear wheels were spinning.
Too many modes and excuses. It should determine the best settings on its own. Some insurance asshole will deny claims due to modes.
@@scottleggejr for on road, there are basically 3 modes. All purpose, Conserve, and Sport. I don’t know any insurance companies that are going to cover you for using Rock Crawl in the wilderness. Most of the off road modes turn off over 45MPH.
I'm sure there's no range anxiety out in the middle of nowhere as long as your crew has a backup generator trailing you.
Solar panels bro. Think green!
Why would you need to drive 200 miles from the nearest city to find a dirt road? Sounds like you don't have and have never driven ANY EV...
@@Kailaniandkiara7165 check out the distance and profile from Phoenix, AZ to Payson, AZ. It's around 80 miles and through the mountains. That's about half way to camping. It's not impossible, but it's not fun or convenient. It's stunning to see all of the Tesla cars on the sides of the highway. I camp a lot.
More likely the improvement you're saying through the large moguls at slow speed was because of the wheelbase length. Test on a wash board or at faster speeds.
Not to mention during the whoops , she was clearly going slower in the Rivian.
Rivian vs Lighting??
It doesn't seem you lift the R1T to its max height of 14.5" of ground clearance, which would have changed the game on some tests. The Raptor R has 13".
Not sure whether they did or not but ground clearance isn't everything. R1T has worse articulation than the Raptor. Btw does Pirelli even make a real off-road tire?
@kobayashimaru8114 I had those Pirellis on my F-150. They're a great highway tire that can handle a little bit of loose dirt on the weekends and handle snow amazingly well, but they're not anything close to an offroad tire.
15.9 inches max ground clearance on the Rivian but not at full speed.
Pretty sure it's speed limited at that height
@@mitchellsteindleryep, lowers to mid-range height above 45mph.
Good video
1:57 That Honda Ridgeline sure is fast.
It'd be cool to have a Daryl cameo!
I actually like my Scorpion tires yes they have less grip in certian situaltions but in most that i drive they do very well,
She should do cleaning up afterwards the soda test. I believe that the Rivian is easier to clean afterwards.
Misleading to say the Raptor R won the acceleration test when the Rivian won in 0-60 and 1/4 mile. Winning two out of the three acceleration measurements means the Rivian won the acceleration test!
Yep. Rivian is faster on pavement and on dirt in the 1/4 and 0-60. And much less expensive to buy and operate.
But they don't want to rub salt in the wound.
Looking forward to comparison with the CyberTruck (Beast). In Baja mode of course.
Great comparison btw.
Baja mode for all those chargers in Mexico... More like bajajajaja mode 😂

Welcome back Emme!! 🙌
So there are no over-the-air updates for the Raptor?
They have updates for their infotainment only.
Let's hope not. Fingers crossed.
The Raptor, being front- heavy, might actually be more stable at high speed than the Rivian, which is more weight- central.
You needed to try the Rivian with more stability control on the dirt. Taking the stability down didn’t help. Also i would have tried it in all purpose mode.
So asking the experts, doesn't off-roading usually accompany break fix scenarios? Because I'm reading the insurance claims for EV are kind of insane. Not that a broken Raptor is a cheap thing, just under the impression EV have a way to go for everyday damage repair.
I stopped when the soda came out sorry.
We can see water clear enough and then I'd still ask why.
If the cup holder isn't good enough complain about that kind of spillage, not by holding it down?
Not. I held my open top sugar drink above the console to see how much I can spill on it.
Maybe with old worm trucks.
The suspensions are made for taking the bumps.
The interior isn't made to withstand drinks.
Try to do that samething with cybertruck
Is this for real with the splashing of soda all over the inside of new cars? Liked the video otherwise.
Let's see em chase for Baja 😂 where's the charger station in ensenada?
If you take that Rivian over RAPTOR R in the Mohave desert where it's in its element then you need your head examined.
Oh....the soda test as you know didn't go well here. Other than that it was interesting.
I'm calling BS on the slow speed test. The lame reviewer didnt even specify which mode the Raptor R was in. I bet they kept it in Sport Mode to BS the results.
The Raptor R as well as most of the F-150 line up also has OTAs since the 2021 model year...
The Ota updates on the ford only work about half the time.
It doesn't really affect vehicle components other than infotainment. Rivian can control every single aspect of their vehicle via OTAs.
Let me know how your OTA suspension update goes on your Raptor.
Spilling an XL size soda all over your pickup truck while driving on a Dirt road might be the most stereotypical American thing ever. Most of us don't keep it open like that though, we cover it with a lid and use a straw, especially when we're driving. Could've used water to prove your point instead of ruining 2 beautiful trucks.
Can't believe you spilled Cola all over the interiors of those trucks.
But which one will navigate the Whole Foods parking lot best?
Your ex-wife’s Subaru.

Emme has a long history with vehicle reviews on different sites. That being said i can't believe that her shtick keeps getting her hired on at places. Especially since I feel their test team was already top notch. I get enthusiasm and exuberance but she just seems very unprofessional and below what I expect of Edmunds.
Rivian would break in half if you took those whoops at 100 mph like the Raptor can.
I couldnt stop laughing at the DDP going everywhere hahahahaha
Good video but I cringed on the Dr. Pepper test. Water would have been bad enough but spilling something sticking intentionally in any vehicle is like a nails on chalkboard moment for me. 😁

Good gracious I think this is the worst review I have seen from Edmunds. Period...and there have been a couple of duds. This one is up there with Alistair's review of the Model S Plaid a couple of years ago.
Ok Im through dissing you Edmunds. Been a subscriber for years. Emme, do better next time.
Zr2 Silverado vs Tremor vs Trd pro tundra
Mega Monkey Emme Hall never disappoints!
R1T is body on frame as well. Not sure why that was pointed out on the raptor only?
Raptor is traditional body-on-frame. Rivian has a body and a frame, but it is not traditional body-on-frame. It's sort of a hybrid between BoF and Unibody, with the body actually being a structural component that is directly bolted to the frame.
Really soda all over a new truck !! Also spinned spinned spinned ?? Try SPUN for past tense !!
Grandma likes to play! 😎4x4
“I think it will be very close
I don’t know what will happen here”
Hmmm…
Id take that Raptor R everyday of the week 😂
Just because a truck has 24 inches of clearance between the top of the tire and the fender liner does not mean it has 24 inches of actual wheel travel. I seriously doubt the stock Ford suspension has anywhere near two feet of suspension travel. I would guess it's closer to ten inches between the suspension snubber and the frame in the front and 14 inches before the snubber hits the frame in the rear. The extra space above the tire is just for show. If the tire won't go up that high, there's no functional reason for it.
You put a dent in that RT it will cost you 30 grand to fix, LOL
I hate to say it, if you have either a 6-figure gas truck or a $70-80k electric truck to choose from, id take the more affordable one with less offroad credentials. I hate having a super quiet "is it even on?" vehicle, but more so, a brand new one that gets worse mpgs than my familys '04 durango (13-14 mixed) and ridiculously spendy. The rivian does have some neat features not mentioned, but no modern (mass produced) vehicle is actually worth more than $50k, special feature, "innovative" powertrain, or not. Just my $0.02. :)
The Speedo didn't say 25 on that rivan
It's hard to watch the soda test but at the same time, I like it.
When people with little experience test two trucks and try and make an educated result. These videos make me cringe, for both Ford and Rivian. I want to see Travis Pastrana test these two trucks and use the proper modes/settings! PLEASE. Edmunds, hire real off road enthusiasts! PLEASE
4H @ 107mph on raptor? Didn’t know you could push 4H that much
R1t belongs on the road with nearby chargers🤣
The difference is one is an actual truck and the other is a toy car with a partial truck body. I would take a Raptor R over 2 Rivians.
The soda test WAS stupid, but remember, folks, it ain't got no sugar as it's DIET.
Love it. Good review.
Sadly the R1T and the R1S both have less rear leg room than the Mach E, and about 6 inches less rear leg room than the F150 lightning
and the Mach E has less head room, shoulder room and hip room...The Lightning is also almost 3 FEET longer than the R1S
The Raptor is an off road beast. The Rivian is just a grocery getter.
Even with updated higher R1T price, you could upgrade tires and suspensions for off road, and possibly still save some money compared to the Raptor msrp. And still "smoke" the Raptor on tarmac
BTW, 1.8miles/kWh correspond to 60MPGe
There's gonna come a time? Of course in the next 7-10 years as technology and infrastructures advance. Gonna take a few more years
She's awesome!!!!!
Your RT settings are all wrong for drag racing on dirt. Ford suspensions have always been terrible. The RT was never meant to be an off road, 4-wheeling machine. Real off roaders will immediately lift any vehicle and change the suspension.
I still have range anxiety with the electric trucks. We'll see what solid state batteries can do before I'm willing to bite.
