- Welcome back to Edmunds U-Drags, our series of down-and-back drag races that incorporate a standing quarter mile, handling, and a rolling start all in one race! In this episode, we’ve got two unlikely contenders as our Rivian R1T takes on the mighty Ford F-150 Raptor R. An unconventional way to compare trucks? Sure, but when they have power like these, we say, “Let’s race!”

Might this have been a different story on dirt? Let us know what you think!
Do it on dirt!
Baja, let's see if the Rivian can keep up there.
The margins may change, but the Rivian will still win.
Or alternatively, for fun, put street tires on the Raptor to see how much that improves it.
@@typhoon5000 Interesting. lol
Let's see this: th-cam.com/video/x4GC6yPJb5c/w-d-xo.html
...run against the Rivian and the Mammoth TRX.
Now that would be fun.
Definitely need an off road UDrag course.
This is where it would no longer be fair.
Traction control in a combustion engine works by slowing the speeding wheel down with its brakes. So it reduces output. When it needs power it needs to spool it up again.
Traction control in an EV: reduce traction to exactly the coordinated speed and input power 1000 times per second to test that limit. Its just not a fair race on dirt. It'd be a tire race between ICE and EV but in separate brackets.
@chriscotton4207 So, putting an offroad truck on pavement vs a street truck is fair to begin with? The only similarities are that they are trucks and they make alot of power. Two vastly different jobs to accomplish.
"i think he had a better run in that one than i did" literally every race bro. He is a far superior driver
Was starting to notice a trend
Exactly that! Get someone on the channel who knows how to actually drive! Completely useless!
Hell no 😂 the McLaren race showed how scared he is in a truly fast vehicle.
Jonathan's Saturn hat is perfection.
No surprises here. But it was a fun race nevertheless. The Raptor R is really a dedicated off-road truck. The Rivian is far more usable for normal driving (or racing), being able to safely stop and turn without drama. But for someone looking for a roaring, snarling, off-road, beast, die hard Raptor R fans will never be satisfied by anything with a battery. For my daily driving needs, it is no contest, the Rivian wins. But then again, for my needs, I wouldn't be buying a truck at all.
Most of the Raptor Rs that I’ve seen don’t look like ever sniffed dirt.
@@TJPaveyexactly. Dedicated off road truck my boot. Have you seen even a remotely dirty Raptor let alone a Raptor R outside of TH-cam? I haven't. These are highway warriors and garage queens.
I've seen quite a few raptors over the years covered in mud to be honest. Being honest, just because you don't see them on their way to the car wash after a day of off-roading, doesn't mean it's not happening.
I'm sure there are many out there that won't take them off the road as well. It's a whole culture thing that's not that dis-similar to our gun culture, where AR-15 owners totally outfit their AR's with thousands of dollars in accessories for warfare but never use the gun once in a war. But it's cool to own it.
@@TJPaveydoesn’t mean they’re not built for it though
@@vr6onejust because people who buy them, don’t use them off road, doesn’t mean they aren’t designed for off road. It is definitely not built for road racing if that’s what you’re trying to say?!?
That Rivian has the off-road tires, which makes it a fairer comparison for the Raptor R. It's even quicker with street tires, with a higher top speed.
Lol. The rivan has 33" tires to the raptor r's 37.
The Rivian is just a car with the trunk lid removed😂
Rivian’s AT tires are 34.1”
@@SB61band the Raptor's 37" tires are massive as are the Fox Baja suspension components used on the Raptor R. I've never seen a Rivian truck participate in any type of Baja race that includes lots of rocks, sands and jumps. The track would ruin the suspension while likely destroying the truck plus you'll need a really long extension cord for a recharge
@@DWH300 Exactly, run the Rivian through baja for 24+ hours and see which one wins..
A more realistic test would be R1T vs Cyber Truck!!
No as R1T will be way behind IMHO. CyberTruck beat Z06.
@@bobby350zyeah it beat the Z06 from a dig not rolling
Or Rivian vs Raptor towing a few thousand pounds for 200 miles.
Both of these are my dream trucks!!!! Good job👍🏽👍🏽
That’s not a fear race for me because raptor is made for Baja road jumping and muddy roads I will like to see that happens now after this straight races, just my little opinion 😅
The problem with a Ford Raptor, and especially the Raptor R, is the brakes. They’re the same as a regular F150, at least they’re not vacuum assisted anymore.
The Rivian R1T is so sweet!⚡️⚡️⚡️I want one!
You gotta do the Trx vs raptor r in this typa race
Love U-drags!
Still choose the Raptor all day. Also TRX vs Raptor R. World needs it lol
That would have been better.
Glad I got my Rivian yesterday, then this drops.
The fastest gas truck is a slug next to the EV trucks, this makes that perfectly clear. Now we'll need the R1T race the Cyberbeast, I think that would come down to the better driver.
Well that went as expected. I’d like to see these on Hoonigans off road course
EDMUND CARS.. You guys are giving everything away in the intro. Already could safely guess which one won before even seeing the race.
Good!
the best drag race on the world Rivian looks like a bargain as quick qa RSQ8
And on AT tires! On street tires it would demolish it!
@TheBowerbird You do realize the Raptor has to run 35 off road dedicated tires right, the Rivian better beat it or else it would be embarrassing
@@leofhr2966The tires on the Rivian are 34.1” AT tires so not that big of difference.
@@leofhr2966We are talking about the Audi RSQ8 right now, not the Raptor. The Raptor is horrible on-road.
@@SB61band I think people underestimate how much of a difference even that amount makes even if small in numbers on paper
love the Saturn hat!!
Both trucks are very impressive! But for some reason no ones talking about the extra 150hp the ev has. 😂 it would be fun the watch the rapter with 900 hp and street tires.
No one is talking about it because it is irrelevant. The EV has more horsepower because of the power to weight/size density advantage that electric motors have.
It isn’t unfair that the EV has more power, it’s a byproduct of its technical advantage.
In other words - you missed the point.
@@jayem8981 what? 🤣🤣 then put it up against a top fuel dragster with 12000 hp. Power is power it doesn't matter were it comes from
@@jayem8981 how is having more power not unfair? You probably think its fair that men are competing in women's sports also dont you? 🙄
@@thekid1924Power is power so race it against a dragster?
So instead of comparing two STOCK vehicles in the SAME SEGMENT, “pOWEr iS pOwEr” so let’s race it against a COMPLETELY different vehicle? Why not race it against a fighter jet while we’re at it?
The point of the video is to compare two COMPETING technologies. Last I checked, WNBA players don’t compete against NBA players correct? Clearly you don’t understand how to construct an analogy. Unless you are saying ICE vehicles = WNBA and electric vehicles = NBA, then they are fair game for comparison.
Stay in your lane. This ain’t the one for you.
@@jayem8981 stop trying to act smart. You sound like a clown. All I'm saying is I'd like to see a comparison were the power is the same or close. As gasoline and diesels are very capable of producing current ev power numbers. So get off your high horse 🤡
You’ll never beat that 835 hp which is instantaneous. that was actually closer than I thought it would be.
I must be watching a different video. All i seen was a big ass gap not even close
@@bigdi77 exactly!
And still I’d rather have a roaring V8 than the double AA batteries.
Man people are still crying about the whole electric thing?🥱 so cringy..
Fun vid 😎
That Saturn hat tho 👌🏻👌🏻
Don't underestimate the Rivian off road either. I've beat quite a few Raptors (non R) drag racing them in rough sand dunes. And it sounds like a Traxxas RC truck in the sand and is crazy fun!
Ok lol
Doubtful but I'll take your word for it
@@leofhr2966 th-cam.com/video/YTYHmZwDCEs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=uW5zeyBWFrggpIQX Here you go, we did multiple runs and I won all of them. I also beat a prototype EV Jeep from Magna and several buggies.
Just look for "Rivian R1T vs Raptor at Silver Lake Sand Dunes" in TH-cam shorts since I can't directly link to the video.
I beat multiple Raptors, Can Am Mavericks, and a prototype EV Jeep Wrangler that Magna was developing. Anything with paddle tires could beat me though.
For sure when you low the Rivian suspension down like this, it acts more like a car than a truck,.. it was half the height of that Raptor lol.... No surprise it turns and brakes more easy...
Would love to see a comparison using Porsche GT cars. There are several to choose from, GT4, GT4 RS, GT3, GT3 RS, GT2 RS.
Would the dual motor performance better it as well?
Cool video!
However, to make this a bit more fair, the Rivian should be set in regular ride height. The only similarities could be setting both in sport mode.
By lowering the ride height, this gives the Rivian more advantages from drag. This is true since it already sits lower than the Raptor.
Off the line the Rivian is faster, rolling start from 45 and my 5.3 Sierra with an air box and exhaust walked away. Maybe the guy was on low battery or something, but I walked away. The shock on his face was priceless when I slowed back down and he caught up to me.
Now do a race through some whoops, or full on desert race. Both are cool but raptor is cooler.
Nice Saturn hat
More UDrags, yes. Dirt U- Drag! Let’s see if that Raptor R can beet the R1T in the dirt! Prove it, I dare yah!
Why is your Rivian still on the old GUI?
Maybe this was filmed before they updated.
I like all cars and it’s whatever a person likes right now . Everything has its god points
Awesome video. I'd take the Rivian over a Raptor any day
Id like to see a dedicated rolling race with out the u-turn. I know the Raptor R has no chance, but I'd still like to see the difference in the result
Time for a driver mod!! One driver ALWAYS does MUCH BETTER than the other!
Raptor is equipped with 37 inch tires .
If that R/C car was equipped with 37 inch tires, it wouldn’t even get off the line .
You can definitely always see whos the better driver. Jonathan always is way better at getting the most out of the vehicles!
15 yrs in the future who wold be still on the road ? And holding his value. That’s what’s really matters to me.
Off road trucks like the Raptor 'don't suck', they just aren't meant for this type of thing.
With that said, the 5.2 liter in the Raptor is just getting started at 720 hp... 1000+ hp is easy. For Baja/Offroading, I absolutely give my nod to the Raptor and modded correctly? it will trounce the Rivian in a straight line as well.
Forget the corners though but who cares. If you're buying a raptor you're not buying it for that.
Honestly my wife has the rivian suv and it drives like a sedan. Is Lower The center of gravity is low because of the battery. I don’t consider a rivian a truck because it’s more like a sedan with tail
The Raptor is for me all day long ...❤ it !!
Respect to the Raptor R. Not the ideal truck to race on pavement when stopping and cornering is involved. I’ll still taking the Raptor R but the Rivian truck is nice.
Now let's see them do an overland U-Drag.
This was sort of done. The Rivian is far better up to 100, but over 100 the Raptor is a bit more stable. Look up Ford F-150 Raptor R vs. Rivian R1T | Off-Road Comparison Test | Acceleration, Suspension & More from Edmunds.
@@TheBowerbirdno. He means actually going overlanding. Where time, distance and range are paramount
Maybe Edmunds needs a U-Drag off-road course, just saying
It would be interesting to see these off road, especially with a bump or two on the dirt.
There's a video with just that! Look it up on TH-cam. Spoiler: The Rivian is better over the bumps.
@@TheBowerbird lmao
@@snozbaries7652Ford F-150 Raptor R vs. Rivian R1T | Off-Road Comparison Test | Acceleration, Suspension & More
He didn launch right for that first race in the F150
Should have swung that back end around on the raptor
Anyone else notice the ‘Price as Tested’ claim changed on the RaptoR from ~$109k to ~$111k 😅 I just found that interesting lol 0:42
This goes to show just how good the new EV startups are! Cheering for Rivian, Lucid and Tesla for launching us into the future!
Asking as a non off road person. Will this type of qual motor ev less capable in extreme circumstances? Since all the power it got from each wheel is the 200ish hp while traditional 4x4 can have more power on a single wheel.
When the Ford Raptor is the lightweight competitor by over 1000lb 😳
In Australia only the base Raptor seems to be available with a kerb weight of 2475 kg and 392 hp, so its not exactly fast. There are two in our neighbourhood and one of them has lifted suspension (just what it needed). I followed it through a roundabout at quite slow speed and I could see way too much of its underside. Is there a worse handling vehicle on the road at the moment? I think it should come with a health warning
Didn’t need to watch to know who wins this race On Road. Different mission parameters for each vehicle. Respect each one’s strengths but acknowledge openly each one’s weaknesses. Like having 2 different boys with 2 different moms.
This perfectly illustrates why big full sized trucks with insane speed make pretty much zero sense in the real world. I am a fan of big power, don't get me wrong, but watching the Raptor R squirm like that is so uncomfortable. The R1T fares much better, thanks to the lower stance permitted by air suspension and more streetable tire/wheel setup. I've got a '20 F150 Platinum EB with a stg 1 tune on it and while I appreciate the extra power, I still don't feel comfortable pushing it too hard for this very reason, even with less sidewall and 20" rims. It's a truck and it's just not made for handling at high speeds. Love the sound of that supercharged 5.2, though. But man, what a crazy world we live in.
It's an off road vehicle made for that specific environment at high speeds, funny enough I have seen people drive it on road with no problems in controlling it at such speeds.
@@leofhr2966 Raptor is a great truck, still not the best high speed weapon, no matter how powerful it is. But I love them regardless, just not my preferred vehicle for driving fast and you can only do so much to compensate for the girth. She’s a BIG girl.
@mholmes9262 That's obvious, nobody is using it as a speed demon on the road. It's the best in it's class at what it was made for, I don't see any other truck competiting against it off-road in the way it does, by that standard it is the best that we know of.
@@mholmes9262it’s a great high speed weapon in the environment is was designed for, high speed desert running.
@@marcg.3830100%, just not on the street. Fortunately I think most people who own them are pretty conservative drivers, at least where I live. There are a few TRX's in my neighborhood and their owners seem to get it. It's usually just when they fall into the wrong hands. Unfortunately you don't have to pass an IQ test to get a driver license.
That's not a "rev limiter" your hitting at 111 mph. It's a speed limiter.
😂😂😂😂 you got him
This is comparing apples and oranges. I'd like to see the Rivian fording, muddling or driving in rocky roads. Or better, a long distance race.
Anyone else notice Jonathan wearing a Saturn hat in the last two videos? As a 2 time Saturn owner, I wonder what his favorite Saturn was?
I thought I was tripping lol
It would have been nice to hear the raptor motor
Might wanna use a reg cab f 150 short bed with a blower..would be opposite results..
We want to see a PLAID race with the track pack!!
Yes! Put it up against whatever you like, I just want to see how the Tesla Model S Plaid (w/track pack) compares to the rest of the super fast vehicles on your list.
Never understood why loud, harder handling, wheel spinning, etc. is considered more fun.
Serious question...Why did the Rivian win in the turns as well? Is it the tires? Its 1,000lbs heavier.
Lower center of gravity with the batteries in the floor, and the adjustable air suspension set in sport mode which lowers and stiffens it
Tires and soft suspension. It’s built to race off-road on uneven surfaces.
How about the Raptor R vs TRX
Only Edmunds would take a pavement princess electric vehicle and put it up against an off-road legend and then be surprised when it wins. Wow.
R1T vs trx please!!
I am predicting a win for the R1T, as I dont think the Raptor R can change directions gracefully.
The Rivian truck looks like it came straight out of a Dilbert comic strip. I mean, just look at those headlights. 🤓
should have ran the F150 single cab supercharged model from factory. It might have definitely been a lot closer.
Do a u drag on dirt or sand
Rivian vs cyber truck!!!!
It may be faster to 60 but i bet the Ford wins when filling up!
I'd like to see the Raptor R vs TRX.
I gotta 19 mustang gt pp1 yall can borrow, yall should race it against a 2024 mustang gt performance pack
That’s a slow 0-60 for the R should be around 3.7
Cool.. Bring a cybertruck
Is Edmunds not ever gonna give credit to 2Fast 2Furious for creating the original U-Drag?
What next? Corolla vs Camaro?
Exactly
The Raptor braking looked super sketch. Not surprised with the results but entertaining to watch the Raptor
I don't even need to watch this one. We know the winner here. It won't be close. So I'll just post and leave without watching lol
Ok do the same exact race but on the side of the runway.
Please!! Porsche Cayman gts 6spd vs Lotus Emira 6spd!
Not that it would have remotely changed the result, but a more fair comparison would have been to have the Rivian at the highest ride height possible and not in sport mode. The Raptor doesn't have the ability to lower itself. Fair comparison would be to get both as close to each other. Rivian would still dominate, but would give a more true result.
Now Do The CyberBeast vs. TRX
The R is an OFF ROAD TRUCK, H E L L O ! ! ! ! Do your race on an off road trail that would make a good watch .
Why no TRX!!!!
Hot hatches are so much more fun to watch than these behemoths!
This proves what I’ve said all along, most raptor owners don’t need the trucks they’re driving because they never see any off-road duty.
Why put the R1T in "soft" suspension? It would corner better in "stiff".
Also, in addition to track conditions, when you're racing EV's you should mention the SoC and if they give you the option (like Rivian), the battery temp.
For a prolonged single turn, like a u-turn, having some body roll is a good thing (to an extent). Stiff suspension = sharp. Good for quick maneuvers, change of directions, etc. Soft suspension = lazy and unresponsive. But overall grip will be [slightly] higher, as weight transfer to the tire actually doing the work. On the track, having a car responsive to your inputs is soo much more important. Think like a shifter kart darting around with basically no suspension.
Never in my life thought someone could make a Raptor seem like a boring truck
How about you guys encourage Ford to make a Raptor H, replace the R's tyre with street all terrains and give air suspension!
Not that it matters much, but that price as tested for the Rivian is not possible.
Cool vid. Now do real truck stuff like tow, and bed capacity tests, and like you know, go in dirt.
Can’t wait to see the CyberBeast smoke the Raptor R. The 2nd extinction of the dinosaurs! 🦕 Fate loves irony 🤣
The Raptor R definitely isn't a street truck. It had no chance.
Now do that again on a desert whoops🤣 and offroad obstacle courses
Pro tip launch the raptor in 4wd then swap to 2wd. Looks pretty obvious that the 4wd is binding hard under braking and in the corner. It would sadly still lose.
