Over 10 years ago i almost got into croc skinks but didn't has the information and ressources about them was not as good compared to now. Been watching your vids about them... ..and yep the temptation to get into it is greater than ever. Thanks for the great work with these beautiful animals, cheers from Northern Quebec!
Thanks to you I have a new croc baby about every 2 months and up to 6 babies now and all doing amazing 👌. Definitely have an awesome new enclosure build in the works but favorite part is watching the adults feed their babies hands down favorite part about keeping this amazing species. @@tiachandler5350 yea I’ve watched them few times taking mealworms and superworms and running back to there hide and dropping them rite in front of the babies and other times were the babies take the bug rite from their mouth. Can’t really count that as feeding because I don’t know if the parents are waiting for them to take it or if the babies are stealing it 🤷♂️. They really are awesome easily one of my favorite species. I’ll be making another big bioactive enclosure soon because some of the babies are getting big and don’t want to take the chance of them breeding with the parents.
There's a few things I can think of that might make it easier. A small dedicated Shop-vac would handle water with debris in it, no problem, and you wouldn't have to dry the tanks down bf the day you want to clean. If you put the pothos slips in small aquaculture cups with gravel or biomedia, they could be pulled out for cleaning without disturbing the roots. To save on sink cleaning, drop the dirty gravel in a bucket (no sand or really tiny gravel), put it in the shower and flood it, shake and fish the gravel out to drain. All water down the toilet. Then you can hit your shower, toilet with your usual cleaner and you've got that chore done as well, w/o risking food contamination at your sink. Same thing works for food and water dish cleaning.
The way you come across is so calm and passionate. You literally make me feel at ease watching anything and I adore your soft voice! ❤️ your reptiles must all feel the love, cause I do through my phone screen 😂🥰❤️

I agree that your cleaning system could use some tweaking. This looks like too much work to do as often as you need to do it. I see most of my suggestions are already mentioned by others.
I think someone else said that you are already using a siphon? That would be my first choice. Fast, so you can do it more often. Removes small debris and urine. You control the flow rate by changing the height between the tank and the outlet end of the siphon tube. But also, if the siphon is getting clogged w larger substrate, what about stuffing some mesh into the siphon tube to prevent the substrate from clogging it up? Something like a wad of the coarse mesh bag that oranges come in?
My second choice would be a small shop vac with a very narrow attachment so that the rocks don't get sucked up.
I don't know if you have a layer of mechanical filtration in your filter, but seems like you need more mechanical filtration to reduce the load on your pump. Add a filter or rinse the current filter more often.
Lastly, I like the little retaining wall that Nova has. It seems to do a much better job of keeping the substrate out of the water than what you have in the other tanks.

I was thinking he could rig up a sump for all of the enclosures. That way the water would have a good reserve and maintenance would be easier.
I love those crocodile skink ! Maybe one day I'll get myself one, i've dreamed of having a paludarium but I don't know what species to put in, I might have found a winner !
They definitely make a great species for a paludarium and once they get settled they start there family and I’ve been seeing new babies in mine about every 2months. If your interested check some videos I did on mine

Make a physical filter filter barrier before the filter that you can easily rinse out. that way the damaging sediment doesn't ever make it to the actual running filter.
Qotd. I would fill the water completely up and even higher than u usually would, and use a siphon. Put a coarse sponge into the siphon and or filter floss so the large debri and stones gets catched in it and wont go down the siphonand or or clog it.
I only keep aquariums and i know how hard it is to siphon shallow water but there exist this little handpump adapter with wich you can start the siphon effect without needing to do crazy manouvers

They definitely are an amazing species and so rewarding to watch specially when the adults catch crickets and bring them to the babies to eat. These lizards have such kind looking eyes I think I love them
QOTD: I would personally keep the water features bare bottom. That way you can easily siphon out all the debris along with the water. This is what I do for my fire bellied toads, and it makes water changes very easy.
Sabi and Sonny's family are just adorable! I love how the babies stand on their parents...my heart can't take all of the cuteness! Love how they give a bit of a judgemental look to you...my pink tongue skink is very judgey or at least I like to think she is 😆

As a fish and reptile keeper the python water change system is the best for doing water changes it also will fill after draining

I'm just curious if this would work or why it wouldn't:
Maybe a layered pool area.
Step1:
Make a fine mesh basket (to trapp debris) and put a slightly smaller basket (plastic box with a lot of tiny holes) in it. Put the stones/Pothos in the smaller basket. If you're doing maintenance, you can lift it out in one go, empty the mesh basket and wash it, and rinse the stone basket.
Step 2:
Surround the Filter entrance points with very porres filter material so the debris doesn't get too far. At least nit the big ones ^^;;;
Step3:
You could use a hose with small diameter and a simple Handpump to suck out the water by lower pressure. (Cheap and easy to clean when clogged)
Stuipid Bonus Step:
When you refill the water you could lay a small dish (in my Aquarium I use half a coconut shell) under the point, where the water hits the water feature so you don't stirr up debris.
Please, note I am not a native english speaker and have no knowledge/experience about reptiles. Just wanted to hear some oppinions. This looks like a nice spot to learn :)
if you get a small aquarium syphon and stir all the rocks up in the water feature, you should get most of the gunk out. that might save you from pulling all of the gravel out. its good to have some gunk in there for beneficial bacteria.

I had Asian red belly toads, I made a 1/2 dry 1/2 wet vivarium for them, I totally understand how that gunk smells…QOTD: I did it the same as you pretty much, I hope someone with more experience can help!

I'm planning on building a double plexiglass/acrylic container. The base and then a slightly smaller one to nestle in the bigger one. The bottom keeps the space in the tank for substrate to stay in place and then you can lift the other one out. This way you can dump out the old water, hose it out, and put it back in. At least, this is my plan for the tropical enclosure I want to make. 😁

I did a similar setup for my fire belly toads; I use an aquarium gravel vacuum to suck out all the water 1-2 times a week. It's basically a hose with a manual pump, so the solids that make it through the screen just go into my bucket.

I had to do this last night. So so many pothos roots. I use a syphon and yes it does suck up everything so I just end up using a shop vac and just rinse any debris. I use a pump for a waterfall but never used it to remove water.

For the rocks, what if you add a mesh cover and place the rocks on top of that? That way you just pull that out along with the rocks for easy rinse and place back?

Have you ever considered a pondless waterfall idea similar to how Aquascape make garden ponds, have a pump under neath layers of gravel, stone and membrane which act as natural filter and require very minimal maintenance
I think the way you are doing your cleaning is efficient.
oh boy, i'm just counting the days until i move and get my own room for reptile. crocodile skins are absolutely on the bucketlist.
are you planning to take out the oldest baby and get it it's own eclosure or will you wait until the parents start to 'kick him out' ?
Use a wet dry shop vac to clean your tanks quickly and efficiently. They are very affordable and come in many sizes. You can even find them in auto shops such as Advanced Auto parts.

Simply just use sand in stead of the gravel on the water features. And you don't need to replace all of it on every moth, just grab a bucket and a tube, and suck all of the dirt from the bottom of the water in the bucket. If you suck some of the sand you can just wash it a little bit out, and put it back. It's really simple.

Maybe you could build a sieve, that fits inside of the water area and put the gravel on top. Then every time you clean, you just have to get the sieve out, rinse the gravel und scoop out the debris. That way you don't have to scoop out the gravel every time.
I have absolutely no experience with those things. It's just an idea, that slipped into my mind as i was thinking about fries and the deep frying sieve 😂
Just in your case replace the fries with gravel und pull the sieve out of your water area. I hope that makes sense!

Have you tried a syphon for cleaning out the water feature areas?
I was given 2 female white eyed crocodile skinks. they were already adults, so I don't know how old they were at the time. 4 years later 1 passed, and the other has been housed with another lizard species which is arboreal, so it didn't interact with her. Anyway, I went to NARBC on Sunday and bought 2 more, the seller said he gave me 1 male and 1 female. Going off what you showed for sexing, I discovered as I was getting them set up they are both females. These guys are hard to find, I was really hoping to breed them, I am a bit disappointed. So far they seem to be thriving but it's only been 2 days, fingers crossed I can get some boys at the next show.

This question is not related to this video but to a video of you feeding your isopods, I think before you moved. I was wanting to know what kind of dehydrated fish you were giving them. I tried freeze dried minnows and they seemed to grow hair within one day. I’m not sure if I have it too humid in there Thanks so much!

man kann die jungen rotaugen-buschkrokodile mit im terrarium der eltern lassen, da sie ihre jungen nicht fressen sondern brutpflege betreiben. man kann sie aber auch einzelnd in kleineren terrarien aufziehen. beides hat vor und nachteile.
im gruppenterrarium kann man halt schwer nachvollziehen, wie viel die jungen fressen usw, was in der einzelhaltung besser geht.
dafür kann man in der gruppenhaltung eben das ganze brutverhalten der eltern sehen. ich denke, da wird jeder halter seine eigenen erfahrungen machen müssen, wie es bei ihm passt.

Those skinks were sooooo cute I love watching these videos about them I love you channel I will be subscribed for forever this is the best keep it up and you should get a big enclosure for mourning geckos just for them that would be so cool and I have a question why do you need a filter for reptiles when they breath air
QOTD: I just have a plastic tub for the skinks to bath in and drink from. It's obviously less good looking than yours but it's super easy to clean, I just take it out, change the water and put it back in. Takes like two minutes.
Can you use cleaner animals like Malaysian trumpet snails to clean the substrate without needing to change the water and clean the substrate manually?

Colored lights are bad for their eyes at night, I have leopard geckos, I would recommend a ceramic heat emitter or just the heat mat.
Do u change out the soil mix side? And how often?

Dion--do you rinse the filter material out, as well? I imagine it is filthy. I don't know much about filters, but wouldn't that prolong the life of them? Or am I totally wrong?
When I rinse them, I try to rinse them in the same water that’s been syphoned out so as not to removed the beneficial bacteria :). Hope that helps!
I just got an exotera paludarium, I haven't set it up yet. I'm not sure how best to set it up so I can have an easy maintenance guppy or a betta tank in the bottom. I'm looking forward to seeing some good QOD responses on here.
I found using a egg crate light diffuser with mesh to be very usefull! You could check the building video of SerpaDesign's Fire Belly Toad paludarium for a better explanation:)
You can't have a betta in a regular paludarium, way too small for them.

Dude, use an aquarium syphon TUBE to suck all that stuff out. It is killing me watching you scoop it all out. This should take you 15min per tank max. Luckily skinks are not affected by nitrate, nitrite and ammonia which is what gets stirred up whenvever you scoop all the substrate up its a big nono in the aquarium hobby.

What about an under gravel filter like you have in regular fish tank set ups? Definitely worth a visit to your local aquarium/reptile shop to discuss that option. Loved watching this👌
Thank you so much for the suggestion! The only issue is you can almost only use the tiny ones because there is so little water. The issue with those is the smallest debre clogs the line :(.
B/c you have so many skinks in the 1 enclosure, maybe the filter intake is getting clogged with waste and that's what is burning out the motor?

Bro, much love, but you’re doing this all wrong. You should add mesh against the dirt with some slate to make a ramp upwards with some gravel on the bottom. The water will be much cleaner. Without having to change it like that.
