      Nice to see! Regardless if you want another terrarium with skinks or not, build a shelf above this one and have the terrariums facing you the way they’re meant to. Then the lids won’t be an issue. And also you can swap them for Exoterra terrariums with front opening doors, will look even better.😊

      Yep, this. Don’t make life harder-as you add more animals, it’s important to make care as easy as possible. Moving tanks back and forth sounds like it’s fine, right up until you’re tired or have a broken wrist or the flu or whatever. Always maximize ease of care, and a stair fashion like Clément suggests is fantastic!

      @@Reptiliatus I learned the hard way-I was pretty soundly incapacitated last year, and would have been really screwed without my partner. Or rather, our cats would have been really screwed. But it made me realize just how important it is to make pet care as easy as possible. 😊 We made some changes that ended up paying dividends this year, when my husband had emergency open shoulder surgery the same time I was starting treatment for an autoimmune disease. Having simplified and otherwise made care easy meant we didn’t have to risk hiring someone to come take care of our cats, which would have been risky what with the whole worldwide “situation” right now. 🤷‍♀️

    I find it really interesting that a lot of information out here mentions that these guys aren't the best pets, even as display because they always hide. And then here's Sony and Sappy just hanging out on the filter or where ever just looking at you and being the cutest. I know you've put in a lot of work with them and it shows! In your opinion, do you think as more captive breeding is done that this species may become less timid? I'm also curious... You said you were sending two of them back, can you elaborate on why?

    My wife and I just made our own paludarium but a few hours after we added the water the clay has been dissolving and flaking off into the water (on the water side and into the hydroton). Did we not wait long enough for the clay to dry or did we mix the kitty liter and substrate wrong? The best way we can think of to fix this without starting over completely is to vacuum out the water and let the clay dry. Should we try to seal it with aquarium silicone? If so, any thoughts on how to seal the clay that’s confining the hydroton? We were super excited and now pretty freaked that we’re going to have to scrap our masterpiece… help please!!! 😩🥺

    I mostly keep land based reptiles, although I never would do it myself, is it theoretically possible to cohabitate a land based reptile that could enter water (for me it's largely snakes) and solely aquatic animals in the same bin of large enough size? or is that still too much contact/ not enough space for more solitary animals

I've been searching for more pet youtubers but there's many I don't like very much since I lean towards pettubers who convince me they they love and appreciate every single animal they own individually, and you're one of the few I managed to find that truly give me the vibe that these animals are more than just "a hobby" to you. it's refreshing, your pets are very lucky to have you as their owner! plus, you've taught me a bunch :)

    • @aniimako
      @aniimako 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do wanna clarify that I don't think every pettuber is a bad pet owner, I just think some of them either hoard them (especially reptile yters) just for the thrill of getting new pets or/and that they aren't taking the best care of them as possible. I'm personally not a fan of giving your pets the bare minimum enclosure and care. but nothing I mentioned seema to be the case with you, so like I said that's very refreshing! good job!

    Although I like your thinking to establish them in captivity and getting rid of WC for them I can't understand your argument about the terrariumsize and that it will work for successful breeding them.
    Based on that you could keep them easily in some kind of rack in small tubs with moist cococoir and without light, plants and even a water-part because they will still reproduce.
    If given the chance they will dig into deeper soil (20-30 cm) and even dig tunnels. (for example if they hunt for rain worms).
    Besides called terrestrial they were observed climbing up to 1.8m height in captivity very easily too and they will use height if the terrarium is structured.
    If the water-part is correctly structured they will express some special behavior in the too. That is possible if it is 15-20cm deep and has a tiny bit of current. They will anker their bodies into fine sand and will also hunt under water.

    • @Reptiliatus
      @Reptiliatus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s lovely. I’d be all for that and I certainly hope to incorporate some scaping that gives Sunny and Sappy (my original pair) this opportunity in their upgraded display tank I will be setting up soon. Unfortunately for the sake of systematically reproducing the animals on a larger scale, I won’t be housing each pair in very large enclosures to save space for additional animals. If the animals are happy and reproduce in these setups then that works and by all means, folks who take in cb will be encouraged to provide such enclosures. There’s a big difference between these setups and a dark in Im a drawer if that’s the comparison you are making...
      In case you haven’t seen my videos, I have been reproducing this species in this exact setup the last 3 years successfully already so this method is tried and tested to be successful. I have produced 6 hatchlings in the last 2 years.

    I'm kinda late to the party on this video XD But we once did our best to set up a little paludarium for our African Bull Frog Mr Pickles, sadly he quickly outgrew it lol and ironically is super happy with a water bowl just slightly bigger than himself (he isn't big on swimming lol). In the future for his final upgrade I would love to set him up like how you have the Crocodile Skinks!
    In future though, I would absolutely love to join the efforts of captive breeding programs for these amazing reptiles (Crocodile Skinks). Until then, I happily watch your content to learn.

      Bioactive enclosures are micro-ecosystems that self-clean for the most part. It definitely increases health and lifespan, from what I’ve seen with my own pets. Tons of animal-specific resources out there!

    Just a heads up, water holds next to no beneficial bacteria, the media in the established filter does, in future, take some media from an established tank and add it to the new media in the new filter, also add Seachem prime to the tap/chlorinated water before adding any Bacteria such as media 👍🏻

    Hi, I love the habitats you created. So well done! Those little guys are adorable. To answer your question: I think you should set up one more tank. Regarding the lid opening, I would consider raising every other tank and storing supplies under the raised tanks. Be it using a 2x4 3 sided frame or staggered heights, it will not only look fabulous but will utilize your space by going vertical was well as horizontal. Best of luck!

    Well I wanted to build a paludarium for my first lizard, not because he needs it (he's a timon lepidus) but I just really like the look of a land and a water feature combined in one tank. Because it was my first terrarium build and the bottom had a leakage, I decided not to implement a water feature. On my to do list now is to build a larger terrarium for my timon lepidus so I can have a pair and breed them, after that im propably building a cool paludarium with a nice water feature because im thinking of getting some water species (maybe crocodile skinks) :)

    I love this channel! It is pretty special, cause I have in recent years developed a dislike for the keeping of semi-domesticated animals after having worked in zoos and and in the pet-trade throughout my whole youth.
    Your croc-skinks are in excellent shape, and if they arrived in poor shape, but look so good now, tells us all how great you are of a keeper. These are some of my favourite animals, and I have kept everything from several species of Vipera (nikolskii, ammodytes and kaznakovii) to crocodilians like Osteolamus, Palosuchus and snake heavy-weights like Dendroaspis, spitters, Naja, and stupid-head Pseudonaja/Pseudechis ssp (seriously. Australian elapids are the worst).
    That said, you are doing a great job, keep up the good work.
