  • Jesse Shand was almost 700 lbs and had basically given up on his life. Until he discovered something so powerful that it allowed him to change everything.
How did Jesse Shand finally change his life after years of failed attempts? Where is he now?
In this video we discuss how Jesse used behavior change and mindset to finally have a break through on his weight loss journey.
Jesse's incredible 350 pound weight loss #transformation went viral when @bodybuildingcom and @truly-channel created mini-documentaries about his story.
Several years later, many of his supporters have wondered what happened to Jesse Shand - and there has been an update to the story. Jesse says he has unfortunately gained most of the weight back.
We'll cover how behavior change helped to repair Jesse's Self-Efficacy beliefs enough for him to pull himself out of a very dark and hopeless mindset.
We also discuss where Jesse is now, and why mindset and having belief in your own abilities can often be the deciding factor in whether or not we'll succeed at something important to us.

He’s done it once so he’s strong enough to do it again. I hope he finds his strength again! I started just by cutting sugar out of my morning coffee and doing 30 body weight squats before bed. It eventually led to a 100lb loss. Little things really do add up.

I dropped from 191 to 170 with diet and exercise, but what allowed me to finally get down to the mid-150s was discovering that sugar was causing my arthritis pain flares. Nothing like knowing you'll want to saw off your ankle in an hour to keep you from eating that candy, ice cream, and cheap takeout pizza.

Yep little things, often kinda obvious things, that we usually still don't do.
My favorites are elevators and Public Transit. Walk five floors up - you'll loose max a minute, or are even faster, then with an elevator. But it keeps you moving, which is good.
And the Public transit.... Last week I could have used the Tram two times, but ended up walking. Best case I'm saving 10 Minutes with the Tram, worst case I'm loosing 5 - while paying money for it, being surrounded by sweaty people in the middle of a pandemic and oh well, the whole experience is horrible. I can walk up in a pretty nice park. That's a much nicer experience, keeps one moving and is even free.
Or back when I went to university. Best case: 25Minutes via Tram. worst Case: 40. The Bike manages that distance in 20 Minutes with ease. 15 when I go a little faster. super flexible, super nice. And being squeezed in one of those Trams in Rush hour is a fucking Nightmare.
I mean that's activity, that is EASY to embrace in day to day life, it won't cost ANY time usually, sometimes it'll even safe some, It's a nicer experience and you may even save a few bucks. And many lack that activity. Yet again, easy to that stuff, at literally no cost of anything (unless you live in a Skyscraper. Yeah, not gonna climb 40 floors every day)

Jessie's already succeeded, in my opinion. The fact that he lost 350lbs at one time is an insane achievement. He's already climbed mount everest once in my eyes so he shouldn't feel bad that he slipped up. By doing it the first time, he's proven to everyone that it can be done. The only reason he has to lose the weight now, is if he wants to feel good physically. He's already an inspiration who's surpassed all reasonable expectations.

My tiny step was to stop eating fast food everyday and only eat food I make myself or food from a sit down restaurant. I did that for a few weeks and then started counting calories. Eventually I started keto once I mastered calorie counting and now, 3 years later, I'm 190lbs lighter. 🤷‍♀️ It works but once I got to "maintenance" it has gotten really tough. Because now, there are no goals other than to just not gain weight. That has definitely been the hardest part of my journey so far. Especially when I don't want to be so food focused for my own mental health. It's a delicate balancing act.

Once you achieve your goals, you are faced with the gap between what you expected to feel and how you feel. That's why a lot of people fall back on weight loss, perhaps they equated a lighter body with more chances to find a partner or something similar, but they lack a rich social life and the feeling of loneliness sends them into comfort eating which over time brings them back to where they were. That's my experience, often people don't lose weight for health nor for aesthetic reasons but for social reasons, which they often don't even acknowledge.

Omg when said it gave him something he had not had in years. Hope. I almost cried. I felt that deep. I’ve been there. I’ll tell you 10 years ago I lost 85 lbs and kept it off and then in a two year period I quit smoking and had two babies. So I gained 100 lbs. it was so very demoralizing but I knew I could lose it again. Now I’m 106 lbs down. Believing in yourself is the key.

I saw a clip from the show "The Floor is Lava" in which a competitor was asked why he stopped working out the week before, and he answered "I was sad!" He was having a laugh but also revealing a truth about himself that many of us deal with. If I'm going to emotional stuff (like right now, being more isolated and working from home during the pandemic), exercise tends to fly out the window. I have the time but not the motivation. I think not focusing on the weight and instead focusing on completing a task right now would be so helpful. Thanks for the video. :)

Positive reinforcement really helps when your self-belief is so low. Unfortunately, when the problem isn't as visible as being overweight, sometimes people tell you your whole problem is in your head and you can just decide to change it. But that decision is as big and scary as deciding to live 100% healthy from now on. But it's true, little steps is key to build up your self-efficacy again 💛💛 thanks for the video!! X

The food we look at as 'comfort' food are often 'murder' foods.
I was so happy when Jesse said he stopped drinking sodas as a part of his weight loss program.
It is not natural to gain this much weight and it points to the extreme unnatural way foods are processed and sold in modern society.
Many modern processed foods and food materials are intentionally processed to include addiction properties.
The celery stick was never made to addict you to it but the cheese dip in the plastic bin it's sold in was.
I really do hope that Jesse finds the love for himself to realize he lost that weight once and he can do it again.
Jesse does not owe anyone on the internet anything and that the judgement that he is a fuck up ignores the entire other more then half of himself that saved his life.
    That part was Jesse too.
It never hurts to get angry at food too.
To look at certain foods as an enemy trying to kill you and to say,you won't beat me because I will not buy you in the first place.
Weight loss like this ,at it's core is the person becoming strong enough to love themself and to say,
We-....all of our fighting selves inside us ,will love ourselves enough to not let this enemy ,food ,kill us.
    We deserve to be happy.
    We deserve to survive.
Jesse,God Bless You and I hope you see,you are wonderful and strong and you can fight again to be free of the past.
Tomorrow is just a wiggle in a chair away.
And Tomorrow is great and you deserve to live in Greatness.

For real, working on mental health is just as important as physical health. I've still got a long way to go but there's no way I would have been able to get even this far without making some lasting changes to self perception (the kind that Jesse really needs to make now). Even the stupid small stuff was tricky at times. In those instances, knowing what was healthy + tuning in to how the body enjoyed doing the healthy thing ( *especially* drinking water and eating right) really helped start me on the right track.

Awesome content Kiana, thank you!!!. I´m overcoming alcohol and drug abuse, and I´m 49 pounds lighter now. One of the key things of this health journey that helped me so much is the "community" element: getting rid of shitty people (family, friends, couple or whoever is putting obstacles and struggles) is key in order to get long term results. So I was thinking on Jesse´s story, saw a couple of his videos: one of the comments on it, the one that his mom is cutting his foot nails, said something like "your mother is an angel, make her proud". If you are 350 kg and you can´t even move 5 meters to go the fridge , you are not able to go shopping food; so his "angel" is the one going to the supermarket, buying a ridiculous amount of food and feed him. I know that getting rid of his mother is near impossible. Can you make a video covering the "feeder" psychology? she was literally feeding her own son to death, but I don´t think she´s a psychopath nor doing this on purpose (maybe she is, but being a psychopath is highly unlikely). Thousands of people are surrounded by a feeder, it gives me chills. Regards!

Thank you, i really needed this video. Thank you so much. My story was pretty much like jessie but mine has an even more sad ending. I was at 110 kg during my final years of college and needed to lose weight. I onced went past a martial arts gym near my campus and got interested. I don't remember much but tht morning i decided to clean my breakfast and try this new atkins diet my friend suggested and lo and behold, 6 months in and im at 82kg. Tht was the happiest moment of my life ever. I could do pullups, i could run i could focus better in my studies i was basically in heaven...
That is until everything went south..fast. currently im at 115kg, a 28 yr old jobless loser and living with my parents. I make amends meet by taking graphic design commissions but so far no job..
One thing led to another, you see i got into abike accident and had to miss my finals. It made it so i need to take another semester just for the subject. I didn't manage to graduate on time with my friends but i tried to keep my chin up. Things get worse, i couldn't get a job for a year so i decided to get my masters...which i fuck up as well. One failure lead to another, i become more and more depress and food became tastier. Just as how fast my life was getting better, it got worst and impacted my self eficacy in so many ways tht there are times i just want to end it all... (fortunately my religion forbids suicide)
Right now im sitting here.. all alone in a dark room munching chips..i am currently living jessie's life. Howevee this video helped me have some hope. I mean im not gonna wake up tomorrow and be happy thin but thanks, this video really helped in me at least taking the 1st step.
I don't know how long will it take..but i know ill get there. One step at a time. I mean i got there once right? At least i know i can do it again.
Ill leave this comment here. Ill come back in 2025 to see how well it ages.

He goes on these insane nutrition/calorie cutting diets and he loses weight for 2 months but just goes back to gaining it again over the next month until he starts another one. I've told him multiple times to start small, improve over time, but because he's used to losing the weight quickly, he gets easily discouraged when he'll lose only half a lb in a week instead of 3 or 4. Diet culture has permeated our society and it takes people like Kiana to shed light on the truth of the matter. This was a great and inspiring video regardless of the ending being negative.

Throughout the years of trying to lose weight, one of the hardest things is realizing that my behavior wasn’t changing and I would stay on for two weeks or a day and it wasn’t working setting small goals has been what’s helped me you know, instead of sitting on the couch and listening to my music I walk around I got outside and I walk and my energy is the best when I get home from work so I walk when I get home from work. Changing small things helps make it seem possible

I've been in a pretty bad place for about 3 years now, and I've had absolutely no trust in myself, absolutely no motivation or reason to change my habits. I want to lose weight and be better at studying, and I did lose some weight (and kept it off),l but now all my attempts in the last year have been a failure. My sister would always tell me it's all in my head and if I have the attitude that I'm going to fail, I am much less likely to succeed. I never truly understood what she meant until I watched this videos and a few of your other videos. I'm new to your channel and I've been binging your videos for the past 2 days. Thank you so much for making these videos, they are truly inspiring to me.

You can do it! Even if you fall off from the routine, it doesn't make you a failure. You always have a chance to get back up.

17:02 it’s not about us, it’s about him. He’s not a character that society created, but he seem to think that way. He didn’t let us down, he let himself down. And i hope he get his courage back.

As a person who lost 100 pound from 16 years of age weighing 270 pound to become a 18 years of age 167 pounds all that mattered was attitude to achieve it while the journey was enjoyed. Your channel is so educational more humans need to watch.

It’s really really hard to mentally prepare yourself to lose weight you’ve already lost. But it can be done, and more importantly you can do it in a better and more sustainable way the second time round.

If he reads this, I hope he knows that it is okay to fail. I have always been a tall and big guy. Sometimes 220 lbs and 6'4" and sometimes near 300 lbs when I was working out to build mass (and sometimes because I was being lazy). But I never have had near these struggles. I hope he knows he can always get back up on the horse. The past is past, lads. Putting yourself in a safe place mentally and surrounding yourself with positivity is the first step. You have to learn to love yourself. Then anything is possible. I am pulling for Jesse to get it right. God bless you, Kiana. God speed to all.

You’re doing such important amazing work here! Your videos help educate why it’s so hard to lose weight and how to improve, not just the same old calories in, calories out. What I’ve learned from you and from others has helped me lose 43 pounds in less than 3 months. I’ve been trying to lose weight since I was 8, this is the first time I’ve lost more than the same 10 pounds. I love what you’re doing and I can’t weight to see you hit that million sub count because you deserve it!👏🏽❤️🔥

Losing weight helped me see I had the agency to work on my nicotine addiction, not just my food addiction. I'm still not all the way off nicotine yet, but I haven't smoked an actual cigarette since before new year. It also helped me realise I had an issue with binging alcohol not just food. Succeeding in one goal, small or not, makes every subsequent problem and its solution seem that much less daunting.

Realising that the smell and taste of cigarettes made me queasy was a huge milestone even if it wasn't one I'd set for myself.

I just want to thank you for this video. I'm 16 y/o and I had bulimia and anorexia, this disorders lead me to have a bad relationship with food in general. I'm trying to re-learn a lot of things, but is really frustrating. I feel like I can't take the next step to health. This video gave me a new perspective, thank you ♥️.
