I'm 16 and throughout my life I have gone through both ends of eating disorders. I was anorexic. Then due to the influence of activists, and alot of other factors. The idea of "eat whatever you want" got to me. To the point I began to binge on whatever food I wanted. I'm currently now in a battle, I'm seen as fatphobic and "not body positive". For simply just wanting my weight to be at a nice inbetween. And it shocks me that people will publicly claim that eating whatever the hell you want all the time, will do you any good. It's not fatphobic to want to be healthy

As someone who works out like 6 days a week, I feel like if you are, as you put it, trying to regain your health, you aren’t really ‘fat’, as you are doing everything in your power to lose weight. It is therefore unfair to wholly characterize you as fat as long as you keep exercising and practicing moderation. Keep it up! You got this!

@@thetommyboi1796 thank you so much! I am technically obese, but I used to be really athletic, so I am watching what I eat and starting with gentle exercise like walking, swimming and yoga because I am worried that my heavy body would put too much pressure on my joints if I did anything too difficult to start out with. There are a lot of diabetics in my family and I don't want to become one, and it kinda scared me to see obesity being pushed as healthy when I know first hand how it feels to be obese vs. how I felt when I was athletic and I know the long-term effects second hand from watching my diabetic family members. I am a fat person, but I am healthy, because I try to eat healthy, because I wanna live till I am at least 74, so that I can eat what I want now and then. I am 26 and two years ago I started getting liver problems because I don't have a gall bladder and my liver was getting weak. I did some tests and the results scared me. So I started controlling my food and stopped drinking beer and now two years later, all my liver problems are gone. You cannot believe how proud I am. Through this control, my weight has gone down too. I remember getting menstrual problems too when I was eating with no limit. Now I get regular periods. My weight is still a little over the weight level of a 26 year old but I dont care. Its not always about losing weight to look good. For me its to help my organs!! They work really hard for me. They are me. I need to take care of myself cause noone else will. Cake won't help when I am at the hospital with serious liver problems.

The truth is, being overweight sucks. Clothes don't fit, you're tired all the time, you get out of breath, your stomach and hips jiggle and itch when you jump around. It's so so uncomfortable.
When I'm eating clean and healthy, a normal but not lean 78-80kg, I feel better, I sleep better, I feel comfortable and secure in my clothes. It's 100x better than any pizza or fried chicken could ever taste. These foods are okay once every few weeks or once a month or holidays or special occasions. Balance.

However, I'm at this weight because I eat as much I want to, I just don't get hungry very much. I'm curious what these fat activists would say to me. I eat what I want, when I want, and as much as I want but that is exactly why I'm underweight. If they have the right to remain fat, does that mean I also have the right to remain skinny?

I am afraid of feeling sick. Plain and simple. I had a few health scares as I was obese and addicted to certain foods. I would ignore these health issues because I didn’t care. Until I began to purse a dream of mine that required me to deal with these issues as my body felt constantly sick. I’m a theatre performer and dance is required a lot so I wanted to take dance classes. Well it was hard when I had tiredness etc and gut issues bad asthma etc. So I changed my diet. I don’t do fad diets. This one is stainable for me. Not for everyone as it requires a huge amount of work. As in I cut out highly processed foods, quick meals etc with added preservatives. I became a very good cook. I don’t have refined carbs sugars etc but I do have carb and natural sugars. I make my own whole grain breads without added preservatives, I make almost everything from scratch with a few things I get from a heath food store that has natural ingredients like garlic or something as a flavor enhancer. I dropped over the last year and a half down a lot and am very small and lean. I have a petite body frame and small bones so it was hard on my balance to even be slightly overweight because it all sat in my mid second. So dance was near impossible. I want to dance. So if I’m at a party yes I ask for a “tiny slice “ of cake because my body isn’t used to refined carbs etc so my sugar spikes fast (not diabetic but was pre at one point) and I’ll get hit issues and feel to tired to go to dance class. If im at a dinner because I have food sensitivities I tend to eat a very small amount. It seems to people I have an eating disorder but I do not because I make the effort to eat a full blown high fiber, high protein, vitamin enriched meal before I even go to said party. But it don’t say this in fear of offending people. Unless I have a list of everything that is in the food I risk migraines, sugar spikes gut pain and fatigue. If I eat something high in fiber before hand and only eat a little the fiber combats the effects. Yet I am always afraid of offending people’s cooking. I can also taste the “boxed “ cakes and I’ll not eat those at all due to how sick they make me.

I have been losing weight for almost a month now and am doing really good; I need to because I'm only 24 and already have stage 1 hypertension. The other day the place I volunteer at moved locations and had a re-opening get together with a homemade lemon cake. I was nervous because just one slice is at least 400 calories and it seemed a bit of a waste of calories when 400 calories can be made up with some peanuts, some fruit etc and would probably fill me up more and be healthier.
I told them I was on a diet and was mentally preparing for the 'oh don't be a killjoy' and sarcastic 'good luck with that' comments (I live in the UK and I'd say we're a bit too fat positive in day to day life, from experience), but they were very respectful. And I did have a slice anyway (and it was within my calories), and they were accepting of that as well, and told me it's good that I'm kind of in the moment with unexpected temptations already while not being obsessed with every single calorie. I'm forever grateful I've surrounded myself with people who aren't utterly unhinged.

The Cake story Virginie talks about is actually just about a woman saying "You're cutting the slices too thick." I've done this, and it's not because I was trying to eat less myself or police anyone else. Sometimes there's a lot of people and not a lot of cake. I remember at church, there was this one kid who loved to cut the cake, and it was always huge pieces at the start, and tiny slivers at the end, because he had no idea how to cut a regular sheet cake into enough pieces for sixty or eighty people. So you correct the person, and say "Please cut smaller pieces," just to be fair.

It’s not a malicious thing at all, quite the opposite, they feel bad for leaving me out, but they really shouldn’t. It’s genuinely not that important for me and I don’t like it how they feel like they did something bad or ignored a guest, it’s nothing like that at all.

I don’t mind not eating it, I don’t like it very much anyway, I don’t feel left out or ignored, there is no harm done but they still feel bad. Unfortunately, a lot of people go to extremes. I had a close friend of several years that was a very funny and sweet but terribly insecure in her skin when we met in high school. As the years passed and her food addiction worsened she became much heavier. I would always try to lift her up about herself and her looks, but it wasn't easy when she became increasingly bitter about her weight and her relationship failings. She also wasn't an honest person. She would literally catfish guys online and then react terribly when they wouldn't go on a second date. As if it was all their fault for being lied to. She would praise lies paraded as facts by Tess and the like while simultaneously calling herself a disgusting whale no one will love. She refused every attempt to go on walks together to lose weight as a team but found a way to turn every conversation into her own misery and really developed a love hate relationship with men. Wanting them to want her, and making comments like how all men are weak and can't handle real women - while sitting right in front of my husband who's a wonderful person. I am all for loving the skin you're in. I'm 5'5", just barely under 200 pounds but have been heavier. I won't give up ice cream, but I also make sure to enjoy a varied diet that included fruits and vegetables. I don't go to the gym but I have a physically active job and go on walks. I try to maintain balance and to take care of myself and while my weight loss has been gradual I don't regain what I lose like so many of these "fat" TH-camrs claim. But when it comes to the very obese, I've yet to see a personal example that isn't dominated by refusal to accept blame and self loathing.

I completely understand about wanting to fit into regular size chairs. We have several chairs at my home that have the sides up so you have to be a particular size to sit in them comfortably, and for the longest time I wasn't able to sit in them comfortably. My thighs would press up against the sides, and it would be massively uncomfortable. I felt so ashamed that I had let myself get that big.
I had gained a lot of weight because my mom passed away in 2019, and I have always struggled with my weight. I've been up before and I've been down. My highest weight has been 267, and my lowest weight has been 199. And I have a huge list of family history and personal weight related issues. But last month, I decided I had had enough, and I'm currently working my way to 170 lb. I'm very proud to say that I've lost a good bit of weight (14 pounds) and can now fit in regular size chairs. I legitimately cried.

As I recover from my binge eating disorder, I feel like while "fat positive" or HAES activists are starting in the right direction by recognizing their relationship with food should be healed, they only ever seem to get halfway. Healing your relationship with food is so much more than removing the stigma away from eating "bad" foods, but their insecurity and difficult pasts with food keep them from truly listening when they're criticized. Thank you for your thoughtful video
