It's not so much the amount of water it's the electrolytes the body needs. You can add that to your water for the main benefits, research electrolyte powders.

My mother is 94 and has Alzheimer's. It's a constant battle getting her to drink enough. I give her a full mug of tea but she only ever drinks half or just a few sips and then forgets about it and lets it go cold. She will look at it and say "I can't drink all that!" but I honestly can't understand why it's so difficult for her.

    • @kissshotheartunderblade655
      @kissshotheartunderblade655 ปีที่แล้ว +80

@@bethel1019 My grandma has dementia at the same age progressing rapidly and doesn't drink enough water. Aside from forgetting or getting tired while eating, the main reason is toileting and incontinence issues-- she hates having to go to the bathroom "too much" when she feels tired (she doesn't go enough-- she's had a few UTIs) and hates changing her pads, doing pericare etc. When she had UTIs and came home from the hospital, we would almost have to shower her every time she used the bathroom because of the mess. And she would be physically weak from being in the hospital, so it was very hard assisting with self-care. That was a three-person task, normally it would be one-on-one. It's been better with PT, OT, and Home Health coming by to help with rehab and she is stronger now, but age still gets to her. Sometimes she can't use the bathroom by herself because she's not strong enough to lift herself off the toilet and she hates asking anyone for help (we supervise her and help anyways). She always insists on coffee every day for breakfast (she never finishes it), and some fluid is better than none, but we have the same problem trying to get her to drink more water. It helps putting the water in a light plastic cup with a straw-- instead of drinking a full cup at once, we come back frequently to check on her and she'll drink through the straw in sips. She still doesn't drink as much water. But the straw strategy helps a lot with elderly pop because it gives them some control over their bodily functions. I believe you when you say it's a constant battle to keep your loved ones healthy. It really is

One consumes water through the kind of food they eat as well. Like vegetables & fruits have a lot of water & fiber in them unlike carb rich simple starches that are gluten rich. And it also matters how you drink the water ie the speed with which you take it in. I dare you, drink two glasses of water in an hour sip by sip (it sounds time taking but it can be done) while sitting down and you won't need to rush to the loo like you would have if you drank both glasses in one go

When I got medicated, it was way easier to keep a consistent shedule and habits, like regularly drinking water. I can´t stress enough how much of a game changer that was for me. No brain fog, massive short term memory improvement, better concentration...
It´s hard to tell what gets improved by what and how much, but it definitely felt like getting a boost on top.

I then get this horrible combined feeling of fatigue, lethargy and bad mood from being tired and mildly dehydrated. Once I remind myself to drink water the feeling of tiredness from the lack of sleep is barely noticeable. (I’ve got small kids so have lots of experience with lack of sleep. Ha ha)

Hey! The only thing that I've noticed in your videos is sometimes the lack of sources that we ourselves can follow up on. For instance, around the 7:55 mark you say "according to one scientist..." with no documentation showing who this scientist is or their credentials. These sources will help give further validity to your already strong videos, and will help your cause in the long run since you don't have a little piece of paper saying you know what you're talking about (though it seems clear that you do indeed know and have done your research). Cheers.

@@kuhmpashunyeah, I do understand why the "why" is so important, humans are storytelling apes after all. But just be careful not to put the "why" over the evidence. The reason pseudoscience is everywhere is because it's basically fun stories, compelling "why"'s, explanations. But it's just not supported by the evidence. And like that other person said, there are lots of things we know to be true, that have been tested over and over, but we just don't know why it works that way; a whole bunch of facts and evidence is even counterintuitive, going against the logic of most of the stories we know about other stuff. It almost goes against human nature, but the evidence must always come first; then, if you're able to find a good story, a good "why" to make sense of the facts, by all means indulge in it to make the facts sink in. But be extremely careful of a "why" without evidence; in fact, unless you're a scientist and treat that fun idea as no more than a hypothesis to be tested, avoid it like the plague.

    • @lilacdaven

Yes absolutely! I do this on pills and, as per usual, I halve them. I'd rather find the true problem than treat the symptoms, unfortunately America is headstrong on the latter- leaving you to suffer and take pills for the rest of your life so that you fall victim to pharmaceutical companies. Money over quality of life.
That said, I avoid pills like the plague. If I need a pain pill every now and then, I'm fine. Yet several times over, I've been diagnosed with GAD (anxiety) and depression, given antidepressants, then sent away! It's ridiculous. I was perfectly happy and content despite anxiety, and my depression is a direct result from my medical trauma/issue that nobody cares to diagnose. I've hauled my own ass out of my problems despite the large stigma on doing so, because in the end, the American healthcare system doesn't care about it's citizens, unless they can physically see a broken limb. Tch.
Needless to say, I'm fortunate my mind is quite assertive in telling me *no* on antidepressants just shoved down my throat as a lazy band-aid "solution." I don't need to become dependent on something that will heighten my problems, and I don't have the money to spare on that. I'm not against them, but they aren't for me, despite what the ERs said. I can't believe my general practitioner put me on some as well.
Lmfao. You really have to save your money and solve your medical issue yourself. All the hospitals and ERs will do is tell you your issue is mental, send you home, just for you to come back even worse than before.
Sorry for the rant. I hate America's healthcare. All they did was add trauma onto my plate of an immensely difficult health issue.

Also I need to add: Being a person who has epilepsy, my neurologist pointed out that dehydration can also be a trigger for seizures.
A good trick that helps me: keep a 1L bottle beside your bed. As soon as you wake up drink as much as you can. I usually try to drink the whole thing.
Try to drink most of your water during the daytime (to avoid late night bathroom trips).
And don't wait till you're thirsty to drink. Got a break? Drink water. After you went to the bathroom: Wash your hands first and drink water.
I know I'm gonna get some side eye for this but for me it really worked: craving something sweet? Drink a glass of water first. Wait 5 min. Re access your craving. Usually my body signals needs for sweets instead of thirst/need for water.

When I was at least 15, I drank a lot of these flavored waters that are really bad for you. About a week of drinking nothing but that, I became super dehydrated and had to be taken to the hospital by my parents. I was then given an IV when my veins were so small, and it hurt like hell to get the needle in my arm. About a day of recovery and fluids later, I was able to go back home and made it back up to speed within a couple days. I learned the hard way from that, and now I just run off water, with the occasional breakfast drinks.
The fact that it took Mauro 2 YEARS to recover after that is horrifying to think about.
