- At least it's better than a real PS3 for the most part?
For real though, this emulator is ridiculously impressive. Bar a few graphical glitches it seems like it's almost playable as of the last few updates (although I haven't tried to play it in its entirety yet).

I disagree on that statement. Half of the game with the wherehog wasn't fun at all in my opinion. Generations was a more consistently solid game, even though it goes back to older stages.

I agree. It was a true modern Sonic game. The thing people forget is Sonic is a game character that changes through time. He isn't a set character doing the same shet in every game. Sonic 2 he had Tails, Sonic 3 he had shields and hyper Sonic, Sonic Unleashed he goes beast mode and wrecks stuff. Only problem with Unleashed is the FPS drops. It happened on PS3 way too often.

@Psych nah the frame rate was definitely shitty itself hard. Hard enough to make the game look like hot garbage but when its actually running smoothly this looks incredible
@@JayLatnethe frame rate was only shitty if you brought the PS3 or Wii version, the PS3 version was notorious for the shit frame rate, and the Wii, well they removed a lot of content just to get it to work

Is a GTX 1060 6GB, i5 7300HQ, 16 GB DDR4 2400 MHZ ram, Windows 10 rig good enough for achieving PS3 emulation at 25+ fps or is the i5 7300 too much of a bottleneck? xD Would love to run my ps3 disks on my laptop since my PS3 burnt out 2 years ago.

My laptop has amd ryzen and seems to run sonic 06 smoothly, only issue is the graphics missing, and sonic unleashed lagged like I expected.
Edit: I tested sonic adventure and it worked fine, but there are some frame drops.

No, seriously, you could have a PC good enough to handle all sorts of games, but as soon as you run the Persona 5 disc on RPCS3, it stutters like crazy and causes your fan to blow so hard I could make a uncreative joke about it.

Sonic Team clearly had a bigger budget with this game. Amazing to think they did this 2 years after 06, not a single month later.
Fun fact a lot of people that worked on this game also worked on Mario Oddyssey
sonic team proper had little to do with many sonic games including 06. sonic heroes is one of the last they themselves worked on exclusively.( someone feel free to correct me if im mistaken) sega has been selling the rights to make sonic games to almost anyone who shells out cash, thus the reason sonic 06 played out like a fanfiction (although it DID have one of my favorite Dr.Robotniks)

It amazes me how detailed Sonic Unleashed's graphics still are. Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces didn't look this good.

yeah the meltdowns were probably part of the reason why they simplified the graphics in Generations but they should've been able to step it up in Forces...
For me sonic unleashed the stage it looks more realistic texture then sonic generation the stage looks little cartoony things btw love both game XD
They had an extremely advanced fetch system working in the original sonic engine, the culling was sublime, Ie only rendering what needs to be on screen, the hedgehog engine 2 was a product of them losing the first one, and starting over, it was shit
Edgyface my jobs is integration of licensed middleware into custom dev graphics engines, so I would like to think I’m qualified enough to have a valuable opinion on the matter, sonic forces in my opinion is laughable, the lighting pipeline is amateur, lods are crap, textures lack even the simplest diffuse aspects

There's a mod pack in Sonic Generations for the Day levels.
There were unused files referencing images for a PC installer in the game, I guess they just had complications or something
God dayum this game was ahead of it's time, like seriously this looks and plays better than Forces, and made everyone's PS3 and 360 lag, good old days.
But now it will run smooth since it is backward compatible on Xbox One X.

For those who are wondering, no, the lag is not the emulator. Sonic Unleashed is one of the worst optimized games I've ever seen in my life, along with Ark, Dark Souls, GTA IV and Resident Evil 4 (PC). Not even SEGA can play this game at 60fps.
Ironic how those are some of the most amazing games to ever exist

Invincible Spriggan Oh man. Even though I didn’t play other sonic games beside Secret Rings and The Black Knight, Unleashed was awesome! Sonic the Hedgehog by day, Sonic the Werehog by night! I loved the music that played when completing the level. I wished Sega could’ve made a movie.

@@aldincatto5744 while I agree with your original comment, this one sounds a little silly. If source footage is under 60fps but a video is rendered at 60, the less frames would just be placed upon the 60. Effectively stretching them out

Man, it's like anything under 30 feels like you are holding your breath, then it suddenly hits the upper 50s and you are allowed to breathe again, and it feels wonderful the small breaths you get.
it’s pretty depressing knowing this was modern sonic team at its peak and we’ll never see another sonic game with this kind of level design, art design, personality, atmosphere, and storytelling ever again.
I'm curious how old you are because when this game came out most people were saying at best it was "ok". Not trying to be a dick just thought this was an interesting comment because most people saw this game as a disappointment. Especially the story and werehog levels.

I miss Jason Griffith sometimes, he was honestly the best Sonic voice in my opinion. Even though it was a rough start for him, he really shined in Sonic Unleashed.

Kind of incredible how they already hit the peak of the boost formula with Unleashed. No other game since has done it this well. Even Generations *cough planet wisp cough*

I am floored by the immense skill you have!!! In my house it takes double the time to complete this stage, cause we get so disorientated! But that was expertly done, and as this is my favourite sonic game, congrats!!! (We're on the ps3 btw :3)

@@JayboCorp.2014 No it's poor optimization. The Xbox Series X has no frame drops. This is a PS3 emulator that resolves some of the frame drops but you need a pretty powerfull computer to resolve them completely
Now this game had stages. Forces literally gave you maybe a minute of a stage or so. This took five minutes to complete while boosting through.
That stage song is so badass to me it just matches speed
Funny how still 10 years (and half) upon this game's release, even on a high end PC still lags. Regardless, it's indeed amazing to see nowadays how emulators run this game almost perfectly, back in the days emulating 360/PS3 games wasn't even dreamable of. Props to the devs, and to such awesome players like you testing their work like this!

It feels very responsive when the framerate is high, but atrocious when there's serious drops. For instance, it took like 1 second for the game to register my drift input at 1:40.

I still think that unleashed is the best sonic game and I doubt that my opinion will change anytime in few years
I enjoy it, all of the day stages, some night stages, mostly b/c they take too long

Have you tried the newer builds of Xenia? Apparently they let you disable the vsync cap so you can unlock the framerate and get 60fps in more games. Or that's what I've heard, anyway.
Not yet. Mostly because the last time I tried it wasn't very straightforward to run the full game compared to the demo. I've seen it running better overall with lower specs, but I'm not sure how stable it is yet. Given it took me like half an hour of attempts for this video I'd say RPCS3 has gotten pretty stable as well.
Can someone tl;dr. I get this came out 10 years ago but did they upgrade the res/graphics in this emulated version or did the original look this good but with a shit frame rate?
Emulator boosted it to 200% of its original resolution. On last gen consoles, where the standard was 720p or worse, this results in a huge visual quality upgrade as it was evident at the time with most PC ports.
I also installed the DLC which has higher quality lighting maps as a bonus that couldn't fit in the disk, so SEGA distributed them that way.

This level is litterally the most demanding day stage in this entire game, so I can tell ya, compared to how it ran on original hardware, that's pretty darn decent.
Like, the jungle part with the lazer robots was even worst.
@@abynighteater5670: On PS3 it lags so much on the water sections it's hard for me to keep up and that's not even mentioning how fast Sonic goes and being hard to maneuver.
@@JayboCorp.2014 I think these sections are pretty bullshit on any system really, in this game Sonic is very hard to control when boosting and the drifting mechanic feels incredibly slipery and inefective compared to later installements. It's too bad really because it's overall a pretty good level.
Imagine if Sega didn't lose this Hedgehog Engine. Sonic Games would have generally been better overall

That was one of the things I loved about Sonic Unleashed: when you super-boosted, the music sounded like you were speeding down a tunnel until you ran at normal speed again

A good art direction can do wonders. Forces might have a lot of great technical upgrades in paper, but are they worth it if they're not used properly?
@@samothethief I feel like they're going to try again in the next 3D Sonic game and use the HE2 to it's fullest potential. They're using it in the new Mario & Sonic game and it looks very good and the lighting looks impressive compared to how Forces handled it because of it's bland-ish artstyle, and this is coming from someone who enjoys playing Forces.
Forces was good the really problem is that the stages are short
Forget "can it run Crysis?", the new test is "can it run Adabat Day at more than 15 FPS?".
There's so much going on in this stage that it brings even modern PCs to their knees.
This game really stands the test of time, the 200% resolution scaler used really brings out the best of the game, looks beautiful even better than the sonic generations pc port at 4k. This looks sharp, and the lighting is fantastic.
