- In the Democratic Republic of Congo, rebels kill, rape, and burn down villages. The Mai-Mai-Yakutumba rebels show no mercy to those they see as their enemies. Women, children, the elderly - that makes no difference when they attack.
They're a powerful armed group which controls lucrative gold mines in eastern DRC.
No international journalist had access to the gold mines - until now. In the region around Misisi, our correspondent Mariel Mueller was the first to enter two rebel-controlled gold mines. She spoke with miners who are forced to pay ‘tax’ to the armed group and also with survivors of its brutal attacks. The silent victims of a multi-billion-dollar gold business.

The majority of legal gold exports dont go West, particularly in DRC.
Main destinations are UAE/China/Hong Kong/Uganda.
Almost 70% of all mines in DRC are owned or funded by Chinese backers. Not just gold, but ALL mining contracts- Diamonds,Cobalt,Copper, lithium,tin,tantalum, coltan,zinc…etc
Safe to say and the evidence shows, illegal gold goes roughly in same direction and ends up in same destination-mainly Dubai.

It's not the gold industry that is the problem. It's government not providing a safe environment for business to operate. There are mining operations that are beneficial to the community. They provide stable employment, they contribute to the surrounding community, they have clean drinking water because the mines pay for water treatment plants as part of the mining agreement.
...and then there are mining operations that use slave labor and poison the water supply. The worst is the Canadian company BG(initials).
We can't use a broad brush and say all mining is bad, though. I wish every mine was ran like First Majestic, but most operations care more about profit than the people in the community. It's sad, but eliminating mining alltogether isn't the solution either. That only leads to loss of employment, and loss of stable employment leads to chaos.

Indeed more scrutiny with regard to where its from, gold going east does not need such certification.
Congo's government need to cancel an amendment signed secretly in 2017 that sped up payments to Chinese mining investors and slowed reimbursements of investment in infrastructure.
The deal struck with Kabila and Chinese investors in 2008 is a prime example of what is happening on continent.

Gold is in modern electronic equipment which is used by all skin colors. Also there are demographics other than white who like to wear lots of gold. The part when the woman guest “tells the white people to stop buying gold” because she heard it somewhere is important to include however as it shows how a lack of independent reasoning and critical thinking due to lack of opportunity specifically with regard to education perpetuates widespread belief in nonsense; a culture of bias.
People will tend to believe what they see locally.
Gold isn't the problem. It's her government not providing safety and security for it's citizens. These types of things happen in all over the world, all types of mining operations, lumber, all different kinds of valuable natural resources. It has nothing to do with gold, specifically.
She says they sell the gold to buy weapons...okay....her government doesn't have weapons? If so, why?
Doesn't seem like gold is the problem here....looks like it's a failure of government.

I disagree 95% with this media, the information published regarding Mai-mai Yakutumba is not correct, Congolese gouvernement has recently considered Mai-mai Y as a reserve force for the country. If they raped, abducted, forcing poor to pay taxes, killing civilians as alleged... On what basis then will the entire region put their trust in Yakutumba? On what basis then are they getting huge support from the current government?

Well it doesn't really help referring to banyamulenge as not being congolese...this country is big enough for them to have where to stay and be peaceful but humans are not that simple, my issue with this interview is with the minimalistic representation of the enter problem trying to make people believe the Yakutuma is at the top of the list of rebel groups doing atrocities in our country...for someome who was born and raised in this side of the country it sounds like a joke
