This comment, along with many here, speaks from great levels of compassion which I can appreciate, but also suffers from levels of ignorance due to knowledge being formed from just a 20 minute long video. Cobalt is sourced in many countries other than just DRC, in these countries the conditions are much better for the miners and they are built in a way where it is either far away or has ways to prevent toxication of surrounding people. The issue is that DRC just has sooo much Cobalt, a populous of entrepreneurial go-geters, and a government who is corrupt. So, conditions in company owned mines where we see the trucks coming out of will be much better than those in the Co-Op ran smaller mines operated by local congolese. THis is because there is very lax and not enforced safety standards here. So, when a company finds a big reserve of Cobalt, they build a mine. These reserves are usually far away from cities and large populations. However, congolese hard working miners move in from all over and choose to live very close to these mines and reserves because they do not have cars or public transportation that allows them to commute form safer locations to the mines easily. Companies have moved in to do a better job at tracking where their cobalt comes from, trying to make sure its not from the worst conditions - for example, Tesla now uses blockchain to verify where its cobalt and nickle comes from. I am not sure how Chinese companies play into this.

I work in a lot of these places in Africa and have been trying to tell friends and family for years, but it falls on deaf ears. You should see the mountains of used car batteries and fridges and freezers being left to leach into the ground in Lagos Nigeria, also the used Tyre mountains. All exported their from the West. Renewable's are are Western Luxury market, nothing more. Just think about the carbon footprint and where the expensive minerals came from the next time your driving your Tesla around. I come from the mining region of Chile, and I can relate completely with that. From the foreign companies having most of the profit while the country itself gets a minor cut, to the dust covering everything. In our place birth defects are not really the issue, but cancer is rampant, I forgot the exact statistic, but it is WAY higher than the rest of the country. We all also have high arsenic concentration in blood. It really made me angry watch this. Hopefully things get better, but tbh I don't trust industrialized countries.

let's not forget cobalt is also used in fuel refining also. This is not a green issue it's a human issue, chocolate, coffee, cheap clothing, fossil fuel extraction all have similar demons. The EV industry is rapidly moving away from cobalt, LFP chemistry in many vehicles is cobalt free.

But have you considered why these people would now be devastated at the shut down of these mines? The people are extremely poor and the government didn't invest the result of the mining in the country, they just sold to outsiders and put the profit in their pockets, that's why out of desperation the poor people have to resort to such dangerous living and working conditions in the first place. They have become dependent on the mines for their livelihood. They would naturally be reluctant to leave if they are not provided with equal if not better alternatives and opportunities.

I'm a marine engineer. I learned in school that there is almost nothing called "green" energy. Here in the West people will buy a Tesla and think themself the saviour of this green earth, while their car runs on energy produced by coal or other forms of petroleum. Their batteries, produced by cobalt, shipped twice across the world to reduce costs. If I had the chance, I would create a program. Through careful mathematics and calculations, it would help analyze carbon emissions, for example a trailer going from X to Y, with most of its variables. With the help of the UN make it mandatory to drastically reduce carbon emissions. Including this, because every inch of dirt excavated to mine these materials pump more CO2 than your car will produce in a year.
I'm not sure when the "green crowd" forgot elementary school biology, but plants need CO2. CO2 is not an issue, because if there were more CO2, the planet would ironically be greener from an increase in not only plant quantity but in plant size and output, meaning there'd be more food and good, clean oxygen available for the rest of the food chain. Remarkable both how the planet can self-regulate and how people have forgotten this.
Tesla sold in the US is made in the US by the way. It's the most American car you can comparing were all parts are made. And oh, the LFP batteries it uses for its standard range models are cobalt free... so are the new 4860 batteries they are rolling out.

When there's mining there's heavy pollution. Mining company and owners should be sued and charged for any bad causes of their mining to the community or atleast it must be in the agreement with the government to enforce it later for the safety and security of the people and the surroundings.

@@rafaelw8115 you should understand. Not all people have public transportation where they are or where they need to go. Public transportation isn't so public the further you get away from cities. Some people I know travel about 50 and 100 miles, one way, to go to their jobs on a daily basis. Some doctors have to travel cross country for their practice weekly and monthly. Public transportation will not work for everyone but it would be nice if it did.

Not just green tech, there is much cobalt used in 'portable electronics' (mobile phones, laptops, e cigs etc) as used in EVs, and don't forget cobalt is also used in refining petrol and diesel.

I'm not sure this has made it the comments yet, But couldn't a majority of the toxic metals near the agricultural areas be removed by planting specific flora species,as well as dedicated swaths of myceliel networks to further break down other potentially toxic elements? edit: idk if this is feasible, or If anyone knows of any organizations already trying such approaches, but it'd be super low cost and efficient given the temperate zone of the country.
I don't think it is feasible to do with this magnitude of a problem, given the rate of accumulation is so much greater than the rate of decontamination. It is a very, very slow remediation process... like decades and centuries. Each generation of plants removes a relatively small amount and then the plants become toxic waste themselves and must be removed to landfill, etc. Perhaps it can be part of an integrated solution, but it seems that it first must be dealt with at its source.

For your information, Elon musk has offered a financial incentive to mining companies to be able to mine in a green /ethical way. He knows there's no point going green if the rare earth minerals arent mined in a sustainable way. I am not a tesla investor. I do invest in a company mining important future rare earth minerals though. All their mines are open pit & in a better jurisdiction than the enslaved and deprived african nation.

We have a silicon smelter in Western Australia that consumes large amounts of coal as a reducing agent to produce pure silicon from mined silica. The process also uses charcoal... produced from the logged native forests nearby. The smelter ovens suck a lot of electrical current and must run continuously all day, all week, all month. I'm told that if the power goes out or there's insufficient supply, the mixture cools & the ovens are a write-off. To generate all that power, they use a nearby coal power plant. What's all that silicon used for? Most of it is shipped to Asia to manufacture solar panels.

Funny thing is that there are areas that you use to recharge your car, still dont use renewable energy since they use that area's electric grid, with whatever source of electricity owned by the local utilities. That's why Tesla said that for 2021 they hope to reach 100% renewable. Not only that but if they were to manage to create economical cars for everyone, and everyone in the world changed to electric vehicles, it would still be a problem to come up with a way to create efficiently, renewable energy to satisfy such large consumptions without impacting the environment. Additionally, we dont know what the governments are willing to do to get profits from it.

Great things are happening on that front though and it's exciting to think we are actually capable of doing this. The DRC has had a history that is fraught with suffering. Imagine this country transformed, where its citizens have clean water, air filtration, and their children are born perfectly healthy. It could. Be done by putting systems and tools in place to clean up the environment and offer the miners and their families a chance to live healthy lives. The corporations that thrive on these minerals should be held accountable for that population of miners that are plagued by these harmful substances that are causing this extreme suffering.
It's just a natural product of capitalism. Neocolonialism, imperialism. The most unethical way to produce a product is usually the most profitable. Capitalism cares about nothing but profit.
You can start by not getting a new phone every two years and demand that your politicians support "right to repair" so the cycle of planned obsolescence is finally broken.
Developed countries should pass laws requiring that all cobalt products sold in their country be "ethically sourced", which means the cobalt mine owners are forced to clean up and treat their mine waste and protect the safety of their mine workers, and companies selling cobalt products have to pay for regular safety inspections.

I would like to see a report on what happens to green energy products at the end of their life ( solar panels contain toxic ingredients and no disposal facilities have been created yet, wind turbines are made from fiberglass and are either left where they are or demolished and thrown into landfills.)

Big companies like tesla dont necessarily want the most green and ethical option , they want the cheapest option while still appearing green. So by putting electrical consumer goods next to cars is an astronomical strawman. Cobalt is used as an additive in the casting of the engine block in an ICE car, the amount is non-existent when compared to the consumption of cobalt by battery manufacturing...... just saying.... :D

I have visited 15th century Swedish mine with better infrastructure and tools than this and those mines were typically manned with war slaves. Its cramped and you cannot even transport the ore with wheelbarrows and hoisting buckets, the only advantage they have are headlights instead of tar lamps. Congo receives billions$ in worldwide foreign aid where is that money going?

This comment, along with many here, speaks from great levels of compassion which I can appreciate, but also suffers from levels of ignorance due to knowledge being formed from just a 20 minute long video.
Cobalt is sourced in many countries other than just DRC, in these countries the conditions are much better for the miners and they are built in a way where it is either far away or has ways to prevent toxication of surrounding people.
The issue is that DRC just has sooo much Cobalt, a populous of entrepreneurial go-geters, and a government who is corrupt. So, conditions in company owned mines where we see the trucks coming out of will be much better than those in the Co-Op ran smaller mines operated by local congolese. THis is because there is very lax and not enforced safety standards here. So, when a company finds a big reserve of Cobalt, they build a mine. These reserves are usually far away from cities and large populations. However, congolese hard working miners move in from all over and choose to live very close to these mines and reserves because they do not have cars or public transportation that allows them to commute form safer locations to the mines easily.
Companies have moved in to do a better job at tracking where their cobalt comes from, trying to make sure its not from the worst conditions - for example, Tesla now uses blockchain to verify where its cobalt and nickle comes from. I am not sure how Chinese companies play into this.

You should see the mountains of used car batteries and fridges and freezers being left to leach into the ground in Lagos Nigeria, also the used Tyre mountains. All exported their from the West. Renewable's are are Western Luxury market, nothing more. Just think about the carbon footprint and where the expensive minerals came from the next time your driving your Tesla around. I come from the mining region of Chile, and I can relate completely with that. From the foreign companies having most of the profit while the country itself gets a minor cut, to the dust covering everything.
In our place birth defects are not really the issue, but cancer is rampant, I forgot the exact statistic, but it is WAY higher than the rest of the country. We all also have high arsenic concentration in blood.

I'm also from Chile, I did not know about the cancer statistics in the northern region being this high so thank you for sharing this info and also I remember when I went to the northern region (Antofagasta, Iquique, San pedro) we were told not to drink any water from the bathrooms, and to only use it to shower and wash your hands and teeth, so you had to buy water to drink. The enviromental situation in our country itself is very much worrying due to desertification and most industries are only worsening this problem so this is definitely something we need to talk about in schools and work so people get informed and we can do something about it, it is hard but we have to fight this problem in every way possible as a country to protect our natural enviroments and resources that people, animals and plants need to survive while considering every person in our society in the solutions and while also considering the economy of our country, knowing that if we keep exploiting people and the enviroment as we have done until now we will truly have worser life conditions in the future and our economy will also be affected

let's not forget cobalt is also used in fuel refining also. This is not a green issue it's a human issue, chocolate, coffee, cheap clothing, fossil fuel extraction all have similar demons. The EV industry is rapidly moving away from cobalt, LFP chemistry in many vehicles is cobalt free.

I'm a marine engineer. I learned in school that there is almost nothing called "green" energy. Here in the West people will buy a Tesla and think themself the saviour of this green earth, while their car runs on energy produced by coal or other forms of petroleum. Their batteries, produced by cobalt, shipped twice across the world to reduce costs.
If I had the chance, I would create a program. Through careful mathematics and calculations, it would help analyze carbon emissions, for example a trailer going from X to Y, with most of its variables. With the help of the UN make it mandatory to drastically reduce carbon emissions. Including this, because every inch of dirt excavated to mine these materials pump more CO2 than your car will produce in a year.

I'm not sure when the "green crowd" forgot elementary school biology, but plants need CO2. CO2 is not an issue, because if there were more CO2, the planet would ironically be greener from an increase in not only plant quantity but in plant size and output, meaning there'd be more food and good, clean oxygen available for the rest of the food chain. Remarkable both how the planet can self-regulate and how people have forgotten this.
Tesla sold in the US is made in the US by the way. It's the most American car you can comparing were all parts are made. And oh, the LFP batteries it uses for its standard range models are cobalt free... so are the new 4860 batteries they are rolling out.

This is so heartbreaking to watch, especially as an east African. We really got sold in the 90's, on electric cars being the be all end all, but in actual fact, their production causes environmental devastation - pollution, soil erosion and desertification, and that's even without mentioning the health risks to local people and the rampant exploitation of both adults and children. Electricic cars are a thing that explodes when you bump into smth coz that is what lithium does when it is mixed with air.
This is very similar to a town in Oklahoma called Picher that also suffered negative effects from the zinc and lead mining. It polluted the ground water and caused many health problems. The town is now abandoned. I really hope these people don't suffer the same fate.

Some people I know travel about 50 and 100 miles, one way, to go to their jobs on a daily basis. Some doctors have to travel cross country for their practice weekly and monthly. Public transportation will not work for everyone but it would be nice if it did.

Not just green tech, there is much cobalt used in 'portable electronics' (mobile phones, laptops, e cigs etc) as used in EVs, and don't forget cobalt is also used in refining petrol and diesel.

I don't think it is feasible to do with this magnitude of a problem, given the rate of accumulation is so much greater than the rate of decontamination. It is a very, very slow remediation process... like decades and centuries. Each generation of plants removes a relatively small amount and then the plants become toxic waste themselves and must be removed to landfill, etc. Perhaps it can be part of an integrated solution, but it seems that it first must be dealt with at its source.

For your information, Elon musk has offered a financial incentive to mining companies to be able to mine in a green /ethical way. He knows there's no point going green if the rare earth minerals arent mined in a sustainable way. I am not a tesla investor. I do invest in a company mining important future rare earth minerals though. All their mines are open pit & in a better jurisdiction than the enslaved and deprived african nation.

Coal miners have a dangerous job. It a reminder to always be grateful for updated equipment.
We have a silicon smelter in Western Australia that consumes large amounts of coal as a reducing agent to produce pure silicon from mined silica. The process also uses charcoal... produced from the logged native forests nearby. The smelter ovens suck a lot of electrical current and must run continuously all day, all week, all month. I'm told that if the power goes out or there's insufficient supply, the mixture cools & the ovens are a write-off. To generate all that power, they use a nearby coal power plant.
What's all that silicon used for? Most of it is shipped to Asia to manufacture solar panels.

Funny thing is that there are areas that you use to recharge your car, still dont use renewable energy since they use that area's electric grid, with whatever source of electricity owned by the local utilities.
That's why Tesla said that for 2021 they hope to reach 100% renewable.
Not only that but if they were to manage to create economical cars for everyone, and everyone in the world changed to electric vehicles, it would still be a problem to come up with a way to create efficiently, renewable energy to satisfy such large consumptions without impacting the environment.

Imagine this country transformed, where its citizens have clean water, air filtration, and their children are born perfectly healthy. It could. Be done by putting systems and tools in place to clean up the environment and offer the miners and their families a chance to live healthy lives.
The corporations that thrive on these minerals should be held accountable for that population of miners that are plagued by these harmful substances that are causing this extreme suffering.

Hate to tell you but disabled ADULTS are treated as "cursed" and disposable in countries like the U.S.(other developed countries actually treat the disabled w respect). Why do only children matter, people NEVER speak up against ableism towards fully developed humans.

It is also even more complicated due to how much instability and violence the Congo has gone through in recent history.
10% is used for EVs´s that´s a lot, normal ICE cars' consumption of cobalt is so little that´s is not even on the scale.
So by putting electrical consumer goods next to cars is an astronomical strawman.
Cobalt is used as an additive in the casting of the engine block in an ICE car, the amount is non-existent when compared to the consumption of cobalt by battery manufacturing...... just saying.... :D

I have visited 15th century Swedish mine with better infrastructure and tools than this and those mines were typically manned with war slaves. Its cramped and you cannot even transport the ore with wheelbarrows and hoisting buckets, the only advantage they have are headlights instead of tar lamps.
