- Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has endured 25 years of war, making it the deadliest global conflict since World War II. More than 120 armed groups roam the east terrorizing the civilian population. The United Nations estimates that over six million people have died and millions more displaced by the conflict. Now, people here are facing another rebellion by M23 rebels whose fighters are from the minority Tutsi ethnic group. The Tutsi were the group targeted in Rwanda’s 1994 genocide and the ethnicity of Rwanda’s president. Rwanda has been accused of funding the group, an accusation they deny.
Congo’s national army, East Africa’s Regional Forces, and a 15,000-strong UN peacekeeping force have failed to stop the rebels' advance. Frustrated and angry, young Congolese people across the east are joining the fight.

Congo's natural mineral potential is valued at $35 trillion, yet is one of the poorest countries in the world. It's crazy.
Other countries and businesses exploit them and take all the spoils. The perfect example is the cobalt mines

It's not, more like 1 trillion.
People often say the DRC is the wealthiest in underground treasures, the wealthiest in the world, and often quote the 24 trillion number.
This number is not based on any research or report, and there are no calculations published. It was just mentioned apparently by someone in the UN and everybody just copied it but its a myth.
Most of these lists online are based on simple calculations: amount of resource in carat/ton/barrel times the market value of the crude stuff and then add all of them together.
When you do these yourself, you notice that most of the resource wealth worldwide comes not from things like silver ore, gold ore or platinum, rare elements that cost a lot, but coal, gas, oil and iron ore.
Things that are not too expensive but enormously abundant but still necessary.
For instance australia gets over 5 trillion dollar just from its 51 billion tons of iron ore (at around 100-125 dollars a ton).
Saudi arabia has over 25 trillion in crude oil, due to its 260 billion barrels
etc.
The DRC does not have impressive reserves of coal, gas, oil(they have some but not much) or iron ore.
Most of the value comes from coltan, cobalt, copper and low-quality diamond (as well as the little oil they have, and tin etc).
While coltan(from tantalum) and cobalt are necessary components in technology, not much is needed(relatively speaking) and the price is not extreme(around 50 dollars per pound of tantalum/cobalt ore). But the world reserves of these things are relatively small(130-140 thousand tons for tantalum and only 7-8 million tons for cobalt). The DRC has around 40-50% of the worlds reserves of tantalum and 9%(central africa) of cobalt.
All their natural resources together they have at best 1 trillion (with around 400 billion from coltan and 200 billion from copper). You could pump up the number with a couple of trillion if you use the congolese rainforest as one big pile of timber, but that would be extremely unwise.
a trillion is a lot, but not even close to 24 trillion and in the top 10 countries with most natural resource value, probably not even top 30 if you account for value per capita.
It probably wouldn't make the country rich either, considering the population size. 100 million and 1 trillion of max mineral wealth won't last a long while. The country could be south america tier at best.
@Dess Bhakktt No, because the country has no infrastructure, eleectricity grid, water grid or education system to speak of. They need that before they can become efficient...now they just fight to control each other so a few can live in wealth, we had the same in Europe before it developed...

I'm a Peruvian and I met a congolese person while going through a hard life situation. He was a smart well spoken person who explained the history and situation of the DRC in a concise manner. I learned from him. I have great respect for african people, they are our brothers. I wish nothing but peace and prosperity for the DRC and Africa in general.

I'm from Kenya, and I can tell you Kenya's desire to have peace in Congo is genuine. There are tens of thousands of Congolese in kenya (probably more than a hundred thousand), some who came in the late 60s and early 70s, and recently two years ago, there has been a surge of Congolese youths into Kenya. They are hawking shoes, clothing, food stuff, and so many working in barbershop across all cities and towns in Kenya. We love them as our brothers and sisters and we wish Congo becomes stable so that most of these young men and women, who appear to be also highly educated to go back home and work as professionals as trained in schools, colleges and universities. Some are trained high school teachers working as shoes hawkers. Kenyas' interest in the conflict is genuine.
Saw the recent Kenya vs Nigeria twitter war. Props on winning that and passing Nigeria in GDP per Capita. Kenyetta would be proud.

As a congolese born and raised in Eastern congo, i have seen my fair share of these conflicts and the damage are just unspeakable. First all congratulations to the journalist on giving word to each faction without introducing any bias (and she brave af). Sadly as one comment mentionned before, the only people who are hurt are us. The central government couldn't care less as long as they keep receving the monthly royalties from the exploitation of minerals. For long people have been screaming that the central government left us, but now for their great relief, attention is shifting toward an other enemy (Rwanda, M23) etc.
If we talking peace finally in the east, HOW EXACTLY is it going to come? Because strategically, the burst of violence from time to time is very beneficial to a ruling party (suprise elections are coming by the way). Every fucking body just want his share. Locals are brainwashed into thinking the other is the enemy while billions are being sent everyday to the central government from exploitations of minerals (they are not all illegal). When everything you have in your life is to survive, it is easy to be manipulated. For those of us who were there during the 2000 genocides, what has changed?? Arming locals to go fight a war that should have been handled by the government is you just creating hundreds of militias again once you give them gun. No training, extrememly biased, no control, we are just going from bad to worse. Are we going to fight M23 out? they were out and we wasn't fine exactly. then what happens to those you just gave guns and no plan for reintegration?

At least you see the big picture. The Banyamulenge form a very very tiny minority of all Congolese and it's perplexing to see them blamed for all the country's failures. At some point the imposed government in Kinshasa has to take some responsibility, however little.

These things really just go to show how often we take our peace for granted. Most of us couldn’t even fathom being born into this life let alone living in it. May god grant the DRC and every other nation facing similar challenges peace.

The language choices by the Congolese players are fascinating as always.
The people signing up to the militia in Goma speak Swahili, but they call M23 by a French name. French-influenced Swahili has a long history in the region. And, interestingly, it was also spoken by Tutsi fighters who returned to Rwanda in the 90s and defeated the genocidal govt.
The militia in the field speak something I don't recognise - I assume they're Maimai and it's their local language? Although it could be Kinyarwanda if they're Congolese/Congo-born Hutu?
Kinshasa elites are speaking French, as expected... but so are the M23. You'd think M23 would use English with an anglo journalist, since the Rwandan govt elites who are accused of funding M23 prefer English to French due to complex reasons (eg the french govt supporting the former genocidal regime)... but nope, M23 are using French (EDIT: M23 also use English, Swahili and Kinyrawanda depending on the audience)).
M23 are talking about the murder of fellow Kinyarwanda speakers in Kinshasa (ie Hutu AND Tutsi)... but not the murder of Tutsi-looking people. They're focusing on the language, not the ethnicity. Meanwhile, Rwanda sits on the sidelines and replies to media in English.
It's all extremely subtle and political - Goma recruiters want a broad local ethnic base so they use the main language of Goma, not their mother tongue. Kinshasa wants to not show a Lingala bias (or Luba, for that matter!) (EDIT: It is very standard for national authorities to use French). The Maimai want to show a strong ethnic identity and the M23 want to avoid showing a Tutsi ethnic identity and instead show that they're Congolese and fit for power in Kinshasa... and while also being mainly concerned for Kinyarwanda speakers (who are ethnic Tutsi). So they speak French, instead of Swahili, English, or Kinyarwanda. And Rwanda? It just wants to be invisible.
If you are confused, that's very normal. It's an extremely complex part of the world.

@@ahorrell are you Congolese? I have a bunch of questions. How bad is everyday ethnic conflict in DRC. For instance do different ethnic groups get along well and do you know the different ethnic groups of famous Congolese? Fally ipupa, mutombo, wan bissaka, and febregas les metis noir come to mind
impressive analysis, to add to it I believe the language they are speaking that you can't pick out is the local language that was prominent pre-Swahilization. while western Congo mainly speaks Lingala most of them are not of that ethnic group. It's a really complex issue. Even calling such a large region Congo, is a tricky one as most of the Congolese, have no historical ties to the Kingdom of Kongo from which they get their name.
Been doing my research paper on DRC it is so disturbing and sad what the peoples are going through at the hands of M23 and former rebel groups. So many families face trauma on a daily basis I pray God have his mercy on this land 🙏. Learning of this has left me with unspeakable grief for my brothers and sisters this silent unspoken story needs more media coverage.
M23 are protecting the Congo Tutsi from genocide. There are twobsides to every story
More context for why there are Tutsi rebels in the DRC: It's a spillover from the Rwandan Civil War. Basically, Hutu soldiers fled to what was then Zaire after Tutsis won, These soldiers attacked Tutsis in Zaire, Rwanda saw the former Hutu Power officials who wanted to return to power next door as a security threat and wanted them disarmed, Mobutu did nothing as financial support for him stopped after the Cold War ended, Rwanda invaded with other nations to stop the rebels during the First Congo War, Mobutu was toppled, innocent ordinary Hutus fled, and the violence never ended since then.
DRC has such a tragic history that has left them in this loop of violence and absolute cruelty and inhumanity towards this populace. A real example of legacy and generational trauma being passed down and blunting any type of progress. Europeans buying minerals from Rwanda. Europeans chopping off Congolese hands, limbs and violently exploiting their populace for the country's resources, has left a society of people who know nothing else. The cycle of exploitation, violence and death continues.
There was endemic warfare in what is now Congo long before Europeans showed up. Contrary to what people seem to think Africa wasn't a continent where every group of people lived happily alongside one another in peace and harmony until the white devils showed up and ruined paradise on Earth.

The lady has a lot of guts. It’s one thing to ask that to a politician in an interview room and it’s a another thing to ask that to an army commander in front of his own men. You can tell the mood changed by looking at the soldiers face after those questions were asked.

Also, why are all of those European, American, and Asian countries buy their Coltan, and then coming to the UN to point fingers at Uganda and Rwanda while financing the conflict themselves.

My uncle served in the DRC in the 90's training soldiers through the Zimbabwean peacekeeping mission. I am so proud of him. Rest in peace baba omdala.
It's sad. Most of these men, signing up to fight, they don't look angry. They look sad, and desperate. They are fighting to try to keep their families and homes safe, but they look so dejected. I suppose that they are not sure, even in themselves, if they would really lose anything if the rebels took over. They just sign up to fight for the current order of things, to avoid the uncertainty of what would otherwise come. I hope that it can all come to an end soon.
I really got the feeling from a lot of them that they're just fucking sick of violence. They side with the state of DRC because it is the most stable and least genocidal option. They want peace.

Tutsis belong in that area but they don't want them there. how about us who have not been able to go where we were born for over 20 yrs being called Rwandans and being chased?. don't we deserve to be able to go home too?. they are crazy. many tutsis are being killed due to their xenophobia and hate. Ask anyone if every village name in that area is not in in kinyarwanda. That tells you that that area belongs to Congolese who speak Kinyarwanda.
Absolutely....fear makes you run right into mayhem...yet the only other option is to fight; which everyone fears...so you join a ragtag group of fighters, armed with guns to butress your fear, then the hour of reckoning comes when you're pushed to the frontiline and meet head on; what you'd been running away from all along. 4 factors create the powder keg that is the DRC(most african countries suffer a milder form of this malady): 1. Get rich quick mentality 2.Quick fix and hate of delayed gratification 3. Illiteracy and Ignorance.4. Dealers masquerading as Leaders. All these factors are inter-related. What makes the Congo and Somalia for example so hard to fix is that there is a massive/critical mass of People who are illiterate and refuse to embrace the delayed gratification nature of education. When the gods are kind they gift such situations with benevolent strongmen like Rwanda got Kagame and Uganda got Museveni( these leaders are not perfect but at least they allow a semblance of good-living to take hold. 'Good Living' is a society where women and children; the vulnerable nuts and bolts of any society to take off, thrive). The Congolese society, wild and churning like the great Oubangui river, has spectacularly churned up a garden variety cream-of- the crap dealers, who tote big guns and egos, who Svengali-like, have the fearful praise-singing masses in thrall, narcotising them on hope-hoax, while peddling and pimping the motherland to Bestial throbbing western phalluses!...These of course leave in their wake a gaping, sorry slapshtick, wet, gono-real perennially festering horror-orifice that the Congo is!....We, akin to wating for Godot....await the healing. God, kindly remember the DRC!

Vice does some of the best journalism on international affairs. If you have a bias filter and don't take sides they provide some of the best objective reporting. If you go into their reports with your bias, they're going to appear left, but true Vice just reports what the people are thinking/feeling on the ground in these conflict zones. Their roots are what journalism should be and they've been killing it recently with pieces like this.
Thank you to all the Vice team for your courage. Which companies and countries are buying from Rwanda and Uganda? Both of them don't have coltan industrial mines. Sanctions should be applied on clients if the world really wanted this conflitcs to end it would have stopped long ago

I’m Rwandan and I wish peace to our brothers and sisters in Congo. My Father studied in Congo and I have some relatives there. In Rwanda we really have no problem with Congolese people. We love their culture, music(my father in particular), I had amazing hardworking congolese teachers in secondary school and we love doing business with congolese people.
Just because there are Kinyarwanda speaking people in M23 doesn’t mean that Rwanda supports them!! I don’t even know much about them! I understand and I know the struggle Congo has been going through for decades but please don’t mislead the anger and hate towards the wrong people! Rwanda and Congo should be in peace and solve this problem together! 🇨🇩❤🇷🇼(not coming from a politician but a normal Rwandan citizen).

@@spurz4649 speaking kinyarwanda doesn't make you a citizen of the republic of Rwanda or a soldier in it's army. In the great lakes region, there are millions of ethnic Rwandans (banyarwanda) who found themselves citizens of Uganda Congo, Burundi and Tanzania mainly because the land that had previously been part of the kingdom of Rwanda was given to those countries and also because of natural or forced migration, all done by colonists.
The M23 gets it's main force from that community, mainly found in congo. The Congolese government constantly denies them rights to citizenship, and sometimes arms local tribal militias to "chase the Rwandans out", which prompts them to take arms, whereas the Ugandan, Burundian and tanzanian governments do the opposite, which is why you never hear of M23 similar cases in those countries.
@@animenation5324 Think about it for a moment. How is Rwanda the 4th largest exporter of Coltan when it has little to no deposits of Coltan(video at 3:50)? The UN group of experts have claimed that Rwanda is directly involved in all of this, and they've shown of M23 forces with RDF regalia. Are they lying ? And why did the M23 leader dismiss the interviewer when ahe asked more about Rwanda? Connect the dots

This is the same situation as in Karabakh between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Armenia invaded and ethnically cleansed hundreds if thousands from a big chunk of Azerbaijan’s territory claiming that ethnic Armenians there were under threat. They killed, raped, looted - but somehow in the eyes of Vice they are the victims of the conflict. The West is playing the same games there as it is in Africa. All to get their foot into the door and plant themselves in the region, close to both Russia and Iran. An ethnic armenian has established a luxury watch firm in france using the gold looted from that territory - france is ok with that. German companies got involved in mining polluting the rivers - germany is ok with that. Then Azerbaijan takes its lands back - germany and france are not too happy, of course. It’s never about fairness or justice or international law - it’s all about their own agendas.

I'm not clued into the DRC or its history but I don't get why no country has stepped in to help them stabilise their country or at least supplied their government to do so. It's so abundantly rich in resource that it being stable can only be beneficial right? Unless the fact its resources are being harvested illegally means it's cheaper or the fact there's no stability means people working the mines for resources are underpaid so the resources are cheaper.
@@xzlemin9569 The Resources are already being mined by various factions which are than sold through third parties(ie Rwanda or some private corporation) to other countries. the DRC is extremely corrupt and poor and its army has proven incapable of stopping the much better Rwandese army and its militants. the DRC has attempted to improve itself many times but each time there was growth another war was created by its neighbors who believe a Strong DRC will be detrimental to there vast influence on the Mineral resources, more specifically Uganda and Rwanda. Rwanda claims the DRC has created a Genocide of the Hutu people for its revenge against the Genocide of Tutsi tribe in the Rwandan Genocide, though some attacks did happen, There is no clear show of genocide happening to the Hutu people. Really it is more about Uganda and Rwanda afraid of a strong DRC that might overshadow there own growth. DRC has a lot of protentional and that is exactly what its enemies fear.
Thank you to vice for speaking and tackling this issue, while so many media outlets have ignored, im truly heartbroken for my country of origin and I always try to bring attention to this.

These rebel group are backed by foreigners countries such Rwanda and Uganda. But behind Rwanda and Uganda , there are the United states and the European Union countries that support Rwanda and Uganda. Because Congo is a geo politics land . Electric cars , iPhone, Samsung , laptop ...etc are manufactured with minerals from Congo . That's why you will never hear the president of the US whether TRUMP Or BIDEN mention Congo . But you see how they are sending tanks, aircraft, missile and billion of tax payers money to Ukraine . But when it comes to Congo which claims more lives since WW2 , no one said nothing. This is how hypocrite the west are . In the US want the conflicts in Congo to end , it will end . But they don't. Because they benefit from it. Europe and America are complaining about immigrants but they built their countries by destabilizing poor countries .

In Ghana I remember when we discovered oil, a lot of older ppl weren’t happy. The feared it could turn to conflict over the oil. Now that I am older, I hope west Africa doesn’t find any valuable resource in our land. We are just not equipped to handle conflict.

One thing I noticed was the lack of old men. Chilling to think that it is because the men are dying in such large numbers that few of them make it to old age.
Most African countries have an average age of 20 and a high fertility rate
They mostly died in the Second Congo War. That brief war killed like 2 million people in a very short period of time, most of them women and old people.
Any country with a lower average age tends to have lot more problem

Instead of Europe or the US most african countrys still have a natural population with many young people and only a few old people. Often to much young people regarding the lack of food and water in these areas. These kind of overpopulation causes constantly wars.
In the west overpopulation comes from overaging which will cause violent conflicts soon or later as well.

Very interesting and well done here. Sadly, the conflict in DRC, while succinctly explained in many ways in this piece, seems to lack a few details in my opinion. Namely that there's no end in sight until the incentive structures for the conflict change - they keep discussing the same talking points as to their reasons for fighting, and I don't mean to suggest here that they are wrong.
However, this conflict cannot, and will not, end anytime soon because no one wants it to end. And I don't mean it in the sense of that no one is trying, but that the various incentives on both sides are towards disunity and conflict. As it stands, the central government is, shockingly, more stable with rebellion and militias running rampant than it would be without these armed factions to deal with due to rife factionalism within the government proper. The militias (on both sides, because while M23 and various anti-government militias do exist, there are at least as many pro-Kinshasa militias, which have the same incentive structure to perpetuate the conflict) have no incentive to end because of their various rackets, and both sides get so much money and assorted assistance from foreign support that any disruption to the status quo, sadly, would be far, far, more destabilizing to the country and region than this continued conflict.
Sounds like the plan is working perfectly for the western mining companies .
And the sad fact is that rebellion is a very economically viable strategy. There's been a long cycle of 'poor security situation, rebel, build power through guns and minerals, negotiate for peace with govt, get paid off/integrated into Army, get more resources, repeat.'
Add in two countries looting and funding militia, and it all gets a LOT worse. It's hard to see an end to the conflict until this dynamic ends, and MONUSCO certainly can't end it.

I'm ashamed to say alot of these companies are Canadian owned . Where I live from . They exploit the earth here as well . Here there and everywhere . Last I looked in over 140 countries mining and mineral extraction with Canadian firms. Either exploiting the lack of infrastructure or in somw cases funding private militia to "protect" their interest in the region . My friend and brother from congo told me when they see geology being done near villages . They either have ti run and leave or join the mine . If they fight they die
