South Africa's Illegal Gold Mines

  • In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country.
However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity.
Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down.
The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold.

The lowest american wage is about 9 dollars, so yeah, 40 minutes for KFC isn't a big deal in America.
But do you really think he can afford that kind of mistake when hes that close to destitution. When I grew up I got KFC maybe once a year and I lived a good deal above the mean income level.(there is a good reason cheap people are rarely in want)

They are in a situation that is very difficult to escape and the government is not helping them. So much injustice you choose to ignore...

how can you even compare buddy, homeless in the US are dying daily.....how is someone homeless in the states considered wealthy with nothing? You assume most homeless people are begging on corner streets which is a lie. out of the thousands i've seen just in 1 states, only a handful actually beg.

    • @icynok
      @icynok 8 ปีที่แล้ว

you can't go on welfare if you are homeless....sorry, not sure where you read that lie, and plenty of the homeless here are Veterans...I am sure they would know of benefits even as homeless, or are you saying that homeless here aren't dying?
Must be easy living in your little Naive world thinking it is easy like that to get a job as a homeless person, that is why we have so many homeless people right? Most companies won't hire homeless people, for the fact that most homeless people don't have the option of being presentable to a interview, having a reliable form of transportation, nor would they be able to keep themselves orderly(clean, presentable cloths) while working.
What is the point of *Options* if you can't take advantage of those options? Being able to Window shop is no better than what you are comparing them to.

To throw in the geologist/miner's POV or rather the economic picture, South Africa is in a stready decline as the easily mined deposits, not only of gold, but also their other primary export commodities like platinum, diamonds and chromium, are almost depleted, with double-digital declines each year. That is going on even though the market has been paying high prices for the last couple years.
So it's not just some temporary price crash, instability after the end of Apartheid, or problems with the ANC government that forced mining businesses to close down, they will not simply return next Tuesday unless gold prices explode (and stay that way) even beyond what we've seen after the housing bubble. Prospectors had no luck finding new minable deposits in the Witwatersrand for several decades, and they were definitely trying. It seems like it's just the scraps that are left over, and if this industry dies completely, South Africa as a nation will be in for a very bleak future. The entire wealth of South Africa, it's prominent role on the continent as we know it, is largely based on what is under the ground.
This transition will definitely not be pretty. If you think South Africa is having a crime problem right now...

That's actually a stupid idea. For example, Norway gave lots of tractors and stuff to Somalia to help them out. Guess what, they just went unused and rusted away since they weren't experienced in using them, lacked gasoline, etc. etc.

What the fuck, no. It's because they lack education and resources, not because they're inherently stupid or lesser.

I don't think you realize that you can't just change a generation over night. The human brain doesn't work that way. You have to change the third-world population gradually over generations by educating their children, etc. If you brought some guy from year 1500 in the middle of Europe to our time he would be just as ignorant and stupid. This isn't because they are inherently more stupid or lesser people. It's just the environment they grew up in. This is why we need to help third world countries with education and safety.
I've personally grown up in a multicultural society where I've had to deal with first-generation immigrants from all over the world who had mostly fucked up values (exceptions existed, of 'course). Their kids would be a mix, because they were influenced by them at home, but western values and friends at school and such. It was easy for me to see that it is society that shapes people, even as a kid, not background and "race" (I don't really like that term).
Just take a deep breath and think about it. It's easy to place blame on others, but it's better to rise above it and think about how to make the world a better place to live in - for everyone.

@The Road Warrior Ok, sure, it has some nice nature, and some unpolluted beautiful places and animals yes, minerals sure, but in terms of the way SA is sitting now, beyond poor, and badly regulated.
      Not to mention divided.
