This a month before they went in the studio to record Nevermind. Butch Vig really helped shaped this song into what it became. All the raw material was there, clearly, but the studio production took something great and made it timeless.
Yep. And it was also recorded after Butch Vig worked on Smashing Pumpkins' Gish, where he learned a lot of new things. He had tons of recording experience before that, but the SP contract let him have lots of time to work on their album properly and spend lots of time with the band, preparing him for what he'd do on Nevermind.
Kurt said he didn’t want it to sound like it was overproduced with heavy guitars and double layered vocals… and that’s exactly what Butch Vig did to the whole album. It was like he was playing a prank of Kurt! 😂 but when Kurt was finally able to listen to it as a whole, he loved it.
Right. Even the verse melody wasn't defined yet. I think it was the way KC used to work: many things (lyrics, structures, melodies) were defined at the studio, sometimes minutes before recording. Mutatis mutandis, Dylan works that way too
To me, this will always be the single greatest performance of Smells Like Teen Spirit. You can almost feel the energy in the room even today! And they didn't hate playing it yet at this point.
Dude, i mean, it can be a little bit of annoying to be asked to sing/play the same thing over and over, but I don't understand why "hating" it.. it's a good song, it put them in history.. come on, sometimes people just like to see only negative things
God damn Kurt was young. When you think about it, he was 22 when bleach was released, 24 for Nevermind, and 26 for in utero. Then died at 27. It’s crazy to think he was only on this planet for 27 years. Damn
Its incredible how good the quality of this video is regarding it was filmed in 91. It's like if a time traveler went back exactly with the purpose of witnessing this exact moment in mankind.
@@raydn23 I think people confuse home video and professionally shot film...even films from the 1950's are incredibly crisp even though they're in black & white. Crappy video quality was due to these kinds of early handheld vhs camcorders. By contrast, watch Nirvana live at the Paramount 1991 which was shot on I believe 16mm film and it looks exquisite.
I feel like this version shows more of how Kurt Cobain's mind is in a creative sense than the original. The original is more softened down to fit the radio and what people like. This right here is a hard dose of reality.
You are wrong because you are omitting the chronology. This is the original, or the closest recording to the raw material. ~15 days Afterwards this song will be rehearsed for 2 days, then recorded in studio for Nevermind.
no he just said it "wrong". he means the same thing u do. when he said the original he meant the album version and compared it to this raw live version. he said how much rough and punk rock it was and i agree. i love it! i like the album version too... but i would rather have a copy of this version. i feel so lucky to be able to see this video recording of it too. wow.

No, they just polished it further to perfection. Raw isn’t always stronger. The final version had variety and breaks and silence that made it so much better and the emotional outbursts so much more intense. And more unique. This version would never had been that groundbreaking.

In 1991, I had graduated high school. I lived in a small texas town on the coast. I did not listen to country music, I absolutely hated hair metal. I could listen to Guns N Roses, but that was about it. I didn't fit in. I was listening to the Cure, New Order, the Smiths, and the Beatles. That was about it. Then about a few months after I graduated, I was sitting in my mom's living room with my cousins and we were watching MTV. This video came on. I had been hearing it on the radio now and then, but really didn't pay no mind until this particular day. We all stopped what we were doing, sat down, turned the volume up and just watched with our eyes wide open. There are certain songs you hear that make you stop and think, "what the fuck is this? I've never heard anything like this..." This was one of those songs. I knew this was going to change "things". And it did. For everyone. Music, fashion, my generation. So glad I could be a part of it, in some small way.
Koen Jacht Watching 9/11 on TH-cam, vs. waking up at nine in the morning to turn on the TV to see it taking place and all the mania that occurred after. if the band had ended right after that show and never released an album version youd hate this except maybe as a funny glimpse into the chaotic music scene there at that time.
Mötley crüe was better than this.. and lasted beyond the 90's despite the drugs. Van Halen, Megadeth, AC/DC and Metallica.. Even Buckethead were better already by 1991

I’d love a studio version of this one but I think they made some key changes to the structure of the song that makes the studio version flow a lot better. The extended verses and choruses in this version are too long imo
It was amazing to behold when they played that tune at this show. I was standing next to Stuart Hallerman in the sound booth which was elevated above the crowd at the back of the room, so you had a great view of the whole venue. It was so cool watching everyone react to the dynamics of Teen Spirit; the whole crowd went insane as the first quiet/verse part goes into the chorus! Nirvana was a bad ass live band, and this performance of this tune was a perfect example of how powerful and dynamic they were. I feel very fortunate to have been able to see them when I did, much less getting to play shows with them. I still have Nirvana's set list from this show.
People say "I wanna express myself through music" This is one of the times I can say I ACTUALLY believe them fully. You can express music fine..... This is the expression of EMOTION. I've seen some heavy music and heard heavy music, this is one of the heaviest things I've ever seen.
The best version I’ve ever heard... the way it was meant to be played... not polished.. original lyrics.. kurts vocals amazing.. he seems more genuinely enthusiastic to play it
no, this is a horrible version, if they were a random band youd hate them, maybe appreciate their loudness and enthusiasm but not the actual music. The recorded version is the best version.
@@joejones9520 This version is the most true to their spirit, not the polished studio version. Nirvana were never meant to be polished, they were like the clothes they wore. This version transmits the actual vibe more than any other one.

Its cool to see Kurt playing with unfinished lyrics. He always cared about music first and would often finish the lyrics in studio sessions. I am pretty sure he is doing what I do all the time. I could be wrong. But when I finished a song and only have the rough idea of the vocals parts I would literally just yell out a mix of gibberish while performing knowing that no will know any better. Then id finish the lyrics later on.
I've heard David Gilmore do something similar. I never knew anyone did it that way. Just figured you wrote a verse part, a chorus part, and then banged out some lyrics. Or started with the lyrics and let the sound of them dictate the rhythm and chords that they suggested. That is really cool.
I love how Dave Grohl adapts. Once his one cymbal falls over (2:41), it's put back up (2:50) but not facing the right way - Dave keeps playing though, using other cymbals in it's place
It's so raw and intense. Whether you like it or not Rock 'n roll changed the pop culture only two times, first with The Beatles and second with Nirvana.

Come out & play Fuck off the rules are not enough to dine & woo, they're not enough to save your ass anyway by the way. Come out an play Make up the rules are not enough to try to fool, they're not enough to weigh but you are not enough, same to you. The rest u got pretty much right but at the end he says hallelujah a messiah & this is stupid ignoramus at some point. This was written very quickly and is candid insight into how he felt just before the band got really big and before he essentially sold out... Sold his soul to the devil as it were. He knew this was it & he hated himself for it. Hence why he hated the song so much... Even with it's changed lyrics, it still represents the same thing, the moment he sold out. The moment the commitment became real & there was no turning back, when really, he just wanted to be left alone.
Another point i want to make here is that the lyrics are purposely ambiguous, as they are a direct response to how he felt about the "contract" the band was presented with. Kurt detested the idea of being beholden to a contract and wasn't going to be bullied, or pressured into anything that he didnt want to do. He was speaking (in)directly to the record lable here but wanted to be somewhat ambiguous about it. Another very deep insight here: the "rules" he keeps referring to are simply words, or more precisely, lyrics; he was told that his lyrics needed more "weight" and was pressured to change the lyrics to this song (and others) many times, in order to have more of an "impact". Kurt really didn't care too much about lyrics, he was more into the melodies but this was perhaps the most poetic song he ever wrote (this version).
@@soulpower3354 neither of you are right about the lyrics hahaha they’re written in his journals, you guys are writing whatever you think you have heard.
@@gordianknot6867 the lyrics to this song changed ALOT, so whats written in his journals does not represent what he saying here. Kurt was known to change the lyrics to his songs during preformances due to forgetting them... He simply didnt care much about lyrics. This particular version, in this particular instance, he was ambiguously pushing a message but only those with with the knowledge of his situation would maybe hear it but then again maybe not due to the purposeful ambiguous delivery of the message. Kurt was very sarcastic by nature and loved to troll dumb ppl, & he was having fun here with this message. This was a real treat for the hardcore fans bc it gives us deep insight into the making of this beautiful song. He ultimately lost the battle though, due to the forced changing of the lyrics into what most fans recognize the song to be, but it is fun to see him trolling the lable with this particular version.

Wow, so cool. His voice is so much higher here. His voice really matured/ developed into such a powerhouse - able to conduct raw emotion. I think that is why he didnt perform the song until later on in 93/94. He really polished the song, the changes he made elevated the song.
JaggersTV Nope. He sounds much more passionate. Of course, one would be if they were trying to make it big and this was their first time debutting an experimental song. =D

funny you should mention this, because Kurt hated macho men. often times the manly men were the ones who sang along to their songs without really listening to the lyrics. he references them after Bleach in In Bloom and a little in this song
@@nyiar9599 i think back then and even now, even if it's just a sport, football was and is associated with the typical manly archetype, especially when it comes to jocks and manly men, both of which Kurt showed disdain for. Reading The Storyteller right now, the part where they played this for the first time in order to rake in the money to get to LA…..so cool to see it recorded and performed the way it was! This video is a treasure!
I got here from the Rolling Stone article by the author who was there that night. It truly is amazing to think that this incredibly important moment in the history of new music was taking place and 1) the song was still a work in progress, 2) the people at this venue had no idea the significance of this moment, and 3) a movie about the Seattle music scene was being filmed accross the street and this band wasn't even known enough to be considered to be in it. A few months later everything was going to be different.
That's wild when you think about it. It's like that saying, "history doesn't seem like history when you're living it" Now you got to wonder where is the band that that film crew thought deserved to be the face of the Seattle music scene.
The intensity of that final chorus as it just dissolves into an anguished blast of riff and howling, there's no way if you were an alt rock fan at the time it wasn't the greatest thing you'd ever heard.

I wish the studio version used the melody that kurt sings in the verses in this version. It just sounds so much more melodic and less repetitive than the studio version. or maybe it's because I've heard the studio version so many times that this different version is new and exciting to me. Either way I love this early take.
This shows how important Dave Grohl was for Nirvana. Even in a shitty early nineties video recording, in a club that must have had the sound of an abattoir, his playing sounds tight, precise and energetic. Though the song changed by the time of studio recording, Grohls parts and tempo is pretty much what one can hear on Nervermind. His style is reduced to the bare minimum - just what the track needs. Its incredible how good the quality of this video is regarding it was filmed in 91. It's like if a time traveler went back exactly with the purpose of witnessing this exact moment in mankind.

this quality is actually pretty bad for 91
@@raydn23 I think people confuse home video and professionally shot film...even films from the 1950's are incredibly crisp even though they're in black & white. Crappy video quality was due to these kinds of early handheld vhs camcorders. By contrast, watch Nirvana live at the Paramount 1991 which was shot on I believe 16mm film and it looks exquisite.
I have had that same exact thought about a time traveler and all the Nirvana Videos

I feel like this version shows more of how Kurt Cobain's mind is in a creative sense than the original. The original is more softened down to fit the radio and what people like. This right here is a hard dose of reality.
