    Great videos, thanks for the thourogh walk-through! After single handedly frying my interface last week it now works again after replacing the 4053 chip for less than 50 ¢. And - not least - I learned a lot about troubleshooting strategy and techniques along the way.

    Thank you very much for your videos. Brought a UR22 back to life by replacing the 74HC4053D but unfortunately the inputs still are flawed. The left channel does not capture any of the lower frequencies of music and the right channel lacks quality. I will continue to replace the input opamp as sonn as it arrives, but maybe it's one of the caps.

    • @BMRStudio
      @BMRStudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100% sure, this is an input Op-amp and one input cap.

    • @TheBrassn
      @TheBrassn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BMRStudio I replaced the JRC NJM2068D and checked most caps but the problem "remained". Turns out I didn't notice that the high-Z switch only works for channel two and my audio source just wasn't powerful enough to work without it. Then of course the high-z mode raises the noise floor which I wasn't expecting to be this noticeable on the UR22.
      So in reality the unit already was repaired after the initial fix. Thanks for your reply and have a great day, you're awesome!

      @@TheBrassn What a blamah :) The High Z circuit is a Chinese TL072. Replace with some Burr Brown opamp, then most of the noise will disappear.

      I’m kind of like these interfaces for their price/quality factor, and for the nice driver integration with Cubase.
      Minus this design fails :) but with a bit of work.......

      @@BMRStudio Yup. The point is we already made several mistakes when choosing equipment... wrong interface, wrong controller, probably wrong CPU... and I'm at the point when I should write music not fight with the equipment anymore, and very likely you saved me a lot of trouble :)

      DJ Full I wrote my first song on a Atari...
      Recorded with Gravis Ultrasound....
      My first instrument was a Adlib “sound card”
      Copied with 1xspeed Nestor CD writer...
      Published via postal service in envelopes....
      My first DAW was a Amiga 500 with 8ch MOD Tracker.... but I was fuc..ng creative and happy!
      Giggling around gears, is a kind of brake in the creative process:))))
      So do it in periods, with a final vision plan in Your head, step by step. And Let’s say every Year, You upgrade the most outdated equipment.
      I know many great musicians, DJ-s, with almost no gear at all. Nowadays if You have a simple laptop and a cheap stereo interface, You can do world chart songs! The technology and the softwares are Unbelievable compared to the past!

    Having a phantom power supply that can only be enabled for both inputs at the same time is not entirely too uncommon, actually. The MOTU M2 comes to mind as another example, and a bunch of mixers like my Mackie 402 VLZ4. Usually it doesn't hurt anything either, although the inputs need to be adequately protected to avoid damage when things are plugged / unplugged (see various articles on the "Phantom Menace"). A properly wired passive microphone is connected across XLR pins 2+3 and floating relative to 1 and as such never sees any voltage at any time. Miswired mics still seem to crop up every once in a while among ultracheap dynamics but in general nonstandard pinouts should be very uncommon in anything made since the 1970s or so.

    • @BMRStudio
      @BMRStudio  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its just bad design, to send phantom power out on both channels...
      Probably companies are copying each other, beside fighting on market.
      Just one example...
      on some marketing brochure, Steinberg even showing a girl singing in a condenser MIC, while her guitar is recorded with an dynamic mic. Or even in the user manual You see mic and not a mic connected...
      No, My friend, is just bad. BAD. Just like the MONO monitoring from Yamaha Steinberg... Jesus! :) How much they saved? 30 cents?
      Many people turned to Me with the same issue. Yes people buying second hand or cheap microphones, and wiring can be bad. But, 48V shouldn't be on channel, what is not decided to power a MIC in a session. Not on any gear, tape recorder, mixer or interface. Totally not professional.
      That's why we have RED lights on any gear to warn Us, - hey, there is a phantom power on!

    I have a SteinbergUR22 that I think I messed up a couple years ago. If I remember correctly, I think i plugged an xlr to 1/4 straight to the guitar. I didn't know much then lol but i think that caused it to flash the USB light and die. I would love to get it repaired - it is my favorite interface.

    Hi. Thanks again for the great videos on the Steinberg UR22. I am trying to repair one a the moment but am a little confused about the parts I should replace.
    In the video you seem to just replace the transistor on the digital/output board YE631 and this is to be replaced by BC327 or similar.
    On the input board, YE632, you replace an op amp and multiplexer to be replaced by NJM2068D and 74HC4053 respectively.
    I have removed these parts but do am not sure from the video what other parts need replacing. The parts list has a NJM4565 op amp but there are two of these op amps on the digital/output board YE631. Which needs replacing please?
    Finally you say “If You have to replace the high-Z input , just a simple TL072 or go with some high-end Analog Devices opamp! “ What is the high-Z input and where is it on the board please?
    Regards
    Dermot

    • @BMRStudio
      @BMRStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dermot Donnelly the TL072 is the small opamp close to the multiplexer.
      This is part of the Hi-Z circuit.
      All the rest is clear I think :)
      Simple foot to foot replacements.
      But check first only the dc-dc converter voltages without the Front input board.
      Then measure the input resistance on the two cable on the input board (clearly visible on the video)
      If it’s too low, so not few hundred K, then replace the multiplexer first. Maybe Your input opamp is survived....

      The future of DSP based systems are doomed. The software implementations are become better and better. Nowadays You can run hundreds of heavy signal processing on a cheap 8 core CPU... In real time. The DAC and ADC chips are cheap and for 50 cent You can get 130 dB range with 0.004 % distortion, at 24 bit 96KHz... Nowadays even not make sense to buy any hardware instrument... Sooo time is changing my friend! We got even Ai based singers... 😂
