2017 Honda CR-V Long-Term Test Introduction

- Spacious, but not too big; efficient, but with a punchy little turbo engine; comfortable and promising renewed quality with every new generation; and easy to drive, but stuffed full of modern conveniences that make a suburban dad's commute or shuttle service to the community center less of a chore.
Whenever a bestselling model like this gets redesigned, we're eager to test every aspect of its capability as thoroughly as possible, so aside from the gauntlet of a few months of family life we have a series of comparisons lined up to see how the CR-V stacks up against the bestsellers and our favorites in the segment, with a road trip thrown in for good measure.
This generation grows a little bit in every dimension, yet downsizes to a tiny 1.5L turbocharged engine, so will that little engine be enough to haul the new CR-V, my family and all the junk we drag around? And has Honda finally fixed their infuriating HondaLink infotainment system?

I'd like to see a winter comparison test of its 4wd system vs its competitors and a functionality test to see how much stuff you can actually fit in it!
carmaniacCDN this one has a completely new awd system
H0okemh0rns
"The last CR-V’s all-wheel drive system used a fixed 60:40 (front/rear) torque split when engaged and could only send power rearward if it detected wheel slip on the front axle. The new CR-V ditches this old-style system for a far more-sophisticated setup. The new CR-V’s system now calculates the torque needed and where it should be distributed based on factors like acceleration, throttle position, yaw and steering wheel angle. Unlike the old system, this new one can send torque rearward on dry pavement to aid handling. The new system should be far better on snowy roads too because it can send 57-percent more torque rearward than the old one. If those front wheels are stuck on a sheet of ice, Nagadome says the system can route 100 percent of the available torque to the rear wheels."
theaviator06 plus shitty Subaru reliability and interior that's shit
Fadic 4 up to 40% torque to the back wheels
H0okemh0rns sends power to the rear wheels way more than just when it’s slipping. Even on dry pavement. There’s a real time torque monitor on the centre dash that shows you where torque is going.
Currently owning 2007 Crv and seems line 2017 Cr-v will be ours new family car 😉
How about the oil dilution issue?
any oil dilution?
If you want room, just get a minivan, we bought the Toyota Sienna and I am fully impressed at how nice it is, fully loaded and such a smooth ride, more room than any vehicle I have ever owned!
Acc0rd79 why the fuck would you compare a sienna to this smarty peanut. Lol? U ok?
Get it into deep snow and see when (or whether at all) the CVT or AWD system overheats and disengages. The previous generations are known to limit the amount of torque they send to rear wheels when the system feels the AWD system may overheat.
Front seats please, specifically the driver's seat. I drive a '16 Accord and the seats are not comfortable at all. I traded in a Lexus RX 350 so the comparisons between prior and current are not fair. Are the seats comfortable? Does your lower body fit comfortably on them?
Please make a pass thru for back row for long items!!! It's almost perfectly practical except it needs a 40/20/40 back row...we would've bought it!
Nice segment
When will the hybrid version available in the USA? Do you have numbers on the EPA?
My only concern is 1.5 turbo reliability and how it performs in hot weather.
How did they get a red CRV with black interior? Is it a preproduction or Canadian model? I only see grey or beige for either of the red colors on the 2017 CRV manufacturer's website.
I have not had a chance to drive it yet but I have concerns about the quietness and adequacy of that tiny engine too plus the moan of the CVT. A big disappointment for us is the deletion of a CD player. It's such a great looking vehicle I'd hate to have that as a deal breaker. Any comments out there?
It's pretty noisy, even just cruising at regular highway speeds, and when you do put your foot down to accelerate and pass, it gets really loud, and unpleasant, totally stopping conversation and even drowning out the radio. While it's loud, the engine has enough power and responds quickly to accelerate from almost any speed.
its interesting that 40% power can go to rear wheels now. I would like to see its awd system on snow, esp up the snow hill.
Good review! What car seat is that?
How about uphill tests?
Headlights test or impressions at night and oil service cost would be intersting to know !
zuti071 oil service cost is whatever you pay for an oil change times 2. You only have to change the oil in the 2019’s every 6000 miles. Not very expensive.
Thanks for posting it.Appreciate all your good work!!
I plan to own my next SUV in 2 years, so do you think CRV is better than forester( aka engine oil issues) as its more reliable.I also don’t plan much off road driving
How would you rate the AWD in CRV is the snow ?You think its good for our winter weather here in Canada.
We will be having one child who doesn’t need car seat & grandpa and grandma in rear seats .
Do you think CRV will be comfortable for 2 adults and a child in the 2nd row seats? Please let me know.
The Honda CR-v is good for our Canadian winters, however the Subaru is much better. I have a Subaru Impreza and love it in the snow. Both Honda and Subaru's are great and you can't go wrong with either, they are both very reliable. My last Honda civic lasted me over 10 years, my impreza is currently 3 years old and no issues. If safety is your criteria, go for the Subaru..
Hi, would you suggest the 2017 CRV Touring or the base Mazda CX-9 Sport?
Nice review! can you add a hitch and/or roof racks? I need to haul mountain bikes and i would like to add thule box for snowboard days?
Christian Alarcón Me too, I need to haul a kayak and tow a trailer
Christian Alarcón
Sounds like your life is like a Mountain Dew commercial from 10 years ago.
I recently added a trailer hitch from E Trailer along with the necessary wiring harness. Total cost with installation was $260. Honda will sell you one for about twice that. The tow capacity is only 1500# but it does a good job with my lightweight 4 X 8 utility trailer. Roof racks and rails are available throughout the lineup. I am averaging 29 MPG but have a light foot and always drive within 5 mph of the speed limit.
what is that beat that starts around the 1:00 mark?
I am getting 22.5 in fully urban driving at NY. How normal is that?
We bought a new Honda CRV touring, and we absolutely love it, we are averaging almost 31 miles per gallon. On the open road, we have got as high as 39 6 miles per gallon.
How is the chassis under hard braking?
That fake wood is embarrassing looking when you see it in person.
id like to know how it does against the Subaru forester and Nissan rogue in the snow and gas milagewise
What you should know before buying, I mean I have one but I want to know what I forgot
How does it do up steep mountains
i watched review by Alex, he says to instal child seat u need to secure it to the ceiling, is that true?
Could you do a video test of its headlights.. since I drive on highways without lights id love to see the headlight tests
Lights?
if it were your money would you choose the CRV or the new CX-5? Thanks
The mazda cx-5 is GREAT BANG FOR THE BUCK but, for me, a bit too much flash. I like the honda crv ex which is the one i have for the way it looks and drives. No, it will not out handle the cx5 but the handling on the crv is safe and stable enough, it is no where near the handling of a semi.
forexample: take you 100kg and copilot 130kg, 3 friends back 3x100kg, 3 backpacks a' 50kg and try to accelerate from 70km/h to 110km/h. take a real test of a highway where full lenght truck is blocking your way to freedom at 80km/h... :-) let's see how long does it take to take over the truck
I'd hope to see a comparison with the Kia Sportage.
While we don't have a comparison with the Sportage set up, both the CR-V and Sportage were contender in our Utility Vehicle of the Year testing, so stay tuned for that.
How does a "long term test " only warrant a 4:42 min video ? Others spend at least 30 min on a review .
Great car..
Subaru Forester will have this thing for breakfast, lunch, dinner and midnight snack
Yes Performance, Genuine AWD where power is transferred when one wheel slips, best safety eyesight and proven reliability. New Honda CRV already has some issues with noise, etc, need to be proven first by U and others. Till then, a new Forester for 2018 will be released in coming months. Its fair to say that the Forester is getting kind of oldie just like the old Honda CRV, but the new Forester 2018 will still be made in Japan. Meantime I shall wait patiently for the 2018 Forester. Should still be superior to CRV in performance, AWD and safety.
take it offroad and on snow. i was to see it handle those.
Archery review I liked it and Ferb most purposes you're probably right however the Subaru Forester it's probably going to be pretty much the leader isn't all around her for that segment but how does always get a win when it comes to reliability and dependability as far as drivetrain goes so it's cheaper to afford a Honda but everything else Subaru Forester pretty much wins even against Toyota RAV4 and the CVT is more reliable on the Forester but also a practicality it's kind of a toss-up between between all three really it's all a matter of taste really comes down to which appeals to you more but if you're really more into the off-roading aspect Foresters going to take it if you're more into a family and dependability and watching your money it's going to be Honda hands down every time that's pretty much the size of the whole thing I'm just saying
Tiny engine + CVT = hell, no. I am too old to be miserable on long trips for a doubtful gain of 1 or 2 mpgs. Try going uphill with those tiny turbos, and you will see how quickly any pretense of economy evaporates, but the endless drone of the engine + CVT will never leave you.
mountainhobo your point?
These Tiny turbos have more torque than their NA couterparts at lower RPM. No need to floor it and bring on the drone of higher rpms synonymous with CVT's. Arguably a better driving experience.
"No need to floor it and bring on the drone of higher rpms synonymous with CVT's" -- Read my original post again. See the word "CVT" there? See what follows it? Now try again.
Have you driven one?... These things destroy hills without droning or destruction of fuel economy. I ended up with the civic 1.5, (same motor, slightly different turbo) and I love it. Could have gotten with the CVT but it's just not as much fun as the manual. But my main counterpoint to you is that Honda seems to have gotten it right with this powerplant. It has no problem motivating these around with ease even compared to the larger 2.4 litre. Torque alt low rpm ensures that.
Do you read what you are responding to? I was just talking about the CVT and how much better a manual is. Now you're convincing me of same?
Hey everyone, before you buy PLEASE look up the electrical issues with the new CRVs/Civics. Out of the past 90 days of owning mine, it has been in the shop around 50 days. NOTHING but issues.
Shea Ellington what kind issues?
Anthony Go I have about 29 different issues. 27 are electrical but 2 problems are from having a fault frame. I'm not going to type out off of the issues but I can tell you the infotainment system doesn't work half the time and neither does the Honda Sensing. You can look up all the issues online but the point is DONT buy a Honda.
Long story short: despite this being a Honda product, the first model year rule still applies. That, or the Greensburg assembly line has a drunk neanderthal and you pray he doesn't make your car.
MTEK A first year car would drop Hondas reliability to 11th place like it is now. There is a bigger issue here.
I'm planning to buy crv exl but kinda scared after reading with vibration issue, I read it from here www.crvownersclub.com/forums/137-2017-present-official-specs-features-etc-gen-5/128729-2017-cr-v-touring-vibration.html.
SO when did real time drive become all wheel drive. it is realtime drive Lol By Honda. glad to see you're getting 26 all around mileage per gallon.
Molten Lava with black interiors!? I thought only come in white...
ivory, not white
same engine as Accord but less torque? why...
The radio has NO TUNING knob! I'll wait for the mid-cycle refresh.
No, I'll buy Sportage. Older people have to pull over and use reading glasses to change the station in a Civic. Sportage, on the other hand, has physical buttons, not virtual ones.
Mpg test at 70mph with economic button on, and cruise control set, then again with no cruise control and no econ mode. Looking for your best real world Mpg test. Calculate your own numbers, don't go off the trip computer.
face it against the cx5
Brenden Pragasam fuck cx5 lol
Brenden Pragasam Mazda sucks!! Biggest rust buckets on the roads if they survive.
Waseem Sells They've fixed the rust issues, and handle better than anything in their respective classes.
it doesn't have guidance on it's rear view camera, at the lvl its at, mazda should have put in guidance lines(lines that turn when you turn the steering wheel), also in the cx-9 - no vents in the third row, thats like asking for a heat stroke
seriously? maza sucks
What's it like in the bends??
Shakerbox
Cost too much for the vehicle!!!
Boring, rather go for CX-9.
A dimension I need is driver's seat to road surface.
it looks so good from the front and side, but the back is so ugly
Among the autoguide staff, you are my least favorite. Your points are weak, and you lack any pizazz
I don't think anyone cares about your opinion Ryan . Don't be an online asswipe
This videos is so off base about ride and quite. I bought it because so quite and had the best ride, of all compact SUV. Nissan Rogue number 2.
quite? Quiet?
Is very loud inside, more than any car Ive been in and I'm 74.
