  • In this video I explain that you do NOT need to install the cam locking tools before you take the cylinder head apart on a Volvo with VVT hubs, etc. This applies to all of the white block Volvo's built from 1991 through 2013. 960, S70, 850, XC70, V70R, XC90, V50, V60, S60, S80, S40, V40, etc.

    Thank you for your awesome and helpful content! Started with an 850 N/A 5 speed car. Then I bought an 850 turbo as a parts car for it. Today I bought a 850R (16t, injectors, tune) that has a destroyed subframe and some bent and broken suspension parts! With a little bit of help from your videos, the parts car, and some elbow greese I think I can make a decent daily driver 850R for under $1250 TOTAL! Your videos are priceless!

      Update. 850r is running and driving with a new subframe. Started parting out the parts car. Made back about 1k. Into the pair for about $350.

    You can also mark the position of the VVT hub and the other hub on the cam shafts themselves using a scribe tool or marker and then back out all three screws completely before removing the timing belt, and then gently tap the hubs off the shafts before removing the cam cover. Makes it easy to remove the cover and cam shafts.

    Hey Robert I'm having a problem with my 5 cylinder Volvo. My serpentine belt keeps getting under my timing belt cover & screwing up the timing. It's the second time I'm having to fix this & it's got less than 100,000 miles on it. Is there any way to prevent it from happening again? Like a timing cover seal or anything to prevent the serpentine belt from wrapping under my crankshaft gears.

    • @RobertDIY

      Fix what is causing the belt to jump the pulley.

    • @2WhiteAndNerdy
      @2WhiteAndNerdy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobertDIY Could that be caused by a bad pulley or tensioner? I just bought a broken S60 with the same issue (valves are shot), but figured I should replace ALL the pulleys and tensioners while I'm in there.

    In some engines, like Toyota's they have an inline filter in the block of the engine that filters out the oil going to the VVT's. Do Volvo's have anything similar to this????
    Great info!!!

    Hi robert, ive got a 2003 s60 2.4t , i fixed all the sespension/ waterpump belts and lot of other things on my car .
    Last thing i had to do is changing the spark plugs, so i bought the plugs and changed them but i stripped the threads of 2 cylinders in cylinderhead. .. i found out last mechanic put the wrong spark plugs in ( long ones) so thats the reason why😢. 1 of the stripped threads was already repaired with a coil. Not my lucky day aparently. What should i do ?
    Pull the head and let a machine shop fix it?

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ouch, ouch, ouch! I would probably replace the head with a rebuilt one.

  • @neo_falcon
    @neo_falcon ปีที่แล้ว

    Very good to know! I'm planning on replacing all the spark plug tube seals in Jody, since 4/5 of the seals are leaking oil on top of the plugs/coil boots. Thankfully, the piston rings are still good after nearly 300K miles! Still got very good compression across the board (195-199 PSI), and the spark plugs were bone dry with only normal wear while replacing them a couple weeks back. 🦾

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not usually. Just make sure it is back on the mark before you align the cams.

    Hi Robert, I need your advice. I have a 2009 Volvo S40 with an issue similar to what you were describing as far as the serpentine belt getting sucked into the cam. What is the best approach to fixing and getting my car back on the road.??

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Did it jump time? If you can remove the busted belt, and start the car, and the car run smooth, just fix what caused the belt to come apart and install a new belt and press on with life. If it make the engine jump time, you can put it back in time and see if it bent valves. If valves were bent it will miss fire because it can't build compression, which is needed for the cylinder to fire, you will need to replace the valves or cylinder head.
