    Oh man
Great video, I love CS 1.6
As a kid I spent countless hours playing on custom maps and game modes
I dislike that shooters now are getting more competitive and fan creations are discouraged

    • @krazzy6440
      @krazzy6440  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah I was initially entertained by the competitive side of shooters, but as it took hold of the player's mindset it really started ruining that authentic community experience. Playing on dedicated servers was such a wholesome experience. Same players day after day. A competitive ranking system within that small ecosystem of players. The loyalty was unmatched.
I think we didn't really know what we were asking for when we all demanded a match making system. It's so cold.

This is such an incredible video
I played cs 1.6 with bots a lot when I was a kid, the magic this game emaneted me is unintelligible, the melancoly/chills you feel when you revisit maps like cs_747, cs_havana or de_survivor (just to mention some), is incredible, is one of those games you always come back to, because it just feels right.
I used to download tons of mods, skins, and custom maps, and I always wondered how they were made, for me it was just unbelievable how people could just create these custom maps about famous tv series, real life locations, or bizarre maps like de_rats, the fact that you could kill burn yourself by walking above the kitchen was insane for me, you really felt like a small animal while playing that map.
So I always dreamed with creating my own custom map, the idea of being on a place I frequent INSIDE of a game, was just mindblowing for me, so, like 5 years ago I checked on some hammer/batch configuration tutorials and then a mapping tutorial and said "alright, I ain't smart enough for this shit", but then this year I did it, it took me months, it was one of my biggest projects, even the compiler wouldn't let me make it bigger because I surpassed the compiler limit, but seeing it become a reality, publishing it, and see people playing it, was so rewarding.
If you ever have the opportunity of creating a map on any game that lets you do it, not just Counter-Strike, I would encourage you to do it, is such an amazing experience, you learn a lot about how the game engine works, how the compilation phases work, reading the documentation or playing with the compiler options, I promise it won't be a waste of time.

Absolutely randomly stumbled upon this channel and video and damn this is so nostalgic, especially combined with your childhood/teen photos and videos
Even though I'm from different country and never played much CS I'm around your age and this era of low poly games from late 90s and early 00s is something to remember fondly, playing with friends on new-bought PC, sharing mp3s and listening to bands like SOAD, LP, Evanescence, Manson, Eminem, not caring much about anything, I miss the time a lot, but sadly, "our days are never coming back"
Also, it's probably mostly a perception thing and I feel like an old man but it's like modern games are getting more complicated and shallow simultaneously, like most big titles nowadays are complex commercial products made by professionals to be sold while back in the day when it was easier to create a game with a small studio it was also often a product of love and passion, not sure if modern kids at the scale are getting the same experience as we are especially if we also consider overall extreme overabundance of various games existing and getting released which leads to short attention span and gigantic libraries filled with games never to be played

I remember the first time I encountered one of my sandpit maps on CSS that I had created a year or so earlier. I never even uploaded it anywhere, but i did host a test server for it with friends & friends of friends.
One person amongst the testing thought it was worth adding to their own map pool, and that was was damn awesome as a kid.

I love hearing stories like this. I wonder how many projects were kinda tossed out there for a fun night and forgotten about by the author, only to become massively succefull and influential across the game years later. Scoutzknivez, cs_deagle5 and so many countless other hits in the community still remain authorless to this day. So cool you found success! It really feels awesome having that level of impact.

Damn you were quite creative. I always tried to make too realistic levels so I never got to that advanced level of hammer or source sdk during my hobby level creating years as a kid. Instead of a friend what got me started was a short guide in PC Gamer magazine and after that self taught things through iteration. However, when Source sdk rolled out there was videos even I think. Nowadays these editors are way easier though, I watched an 1-2 hour video on UE5 and got started pretty quickly. I remember just rendering the lighting on hammer being a pain. Good memories though. :D

Yes I bounce between default 1.6 models and the retail ones from time to time. I like using the retail models, because I only started playing in 2003 when Steam came around so I have a deep fascination and respect for the those who played on the WON servers pre-steam. Also the 1.5 models just look badass. They're visceral and hulking. You really feel relentless with those models.

the mapmaking is more interesting process ,than gaming itself. i began to do maps for cs1.6 and half-life. long time ago. after 20 years gap, i came back to mapmaking , but only for black mesa the game, built on new source engine. it is still very interesting process to do.

    • @krazzy6440

I know it feels like you'd be creating something and throwing it to the void, but that can't be further from the truth. Amazingly 1.6 is still played by tens of thousands around the clock each day and countring. It's not going anywhere. In some parts of the world CS 1.6 has become a staple of the culture. If you want to experiment and create something, don't hold back. GameBanana and 17Buddies custom map submissions still get thousands of downloads a day. You'd fit right in!

As someone who had no knowledge of cs at the time (being that I hadn't even been born yet), I feel extremely saddened that by the time I got into mapping for source/gold source the game was far past its prime, and that kind of put me off making maps for cs, although I'm trying to get back into it with making stuff for cs:go. Though I do have to agree, It's not the same.

One of my ongoing efforts with my voice on here is to revitalize customization in gaming. The bright side here is that the tools for level design still exist and we can pick them up at any moment in time. It all comes down to choice. I know life situations can interfere with creative endeavors, but if it's something that's grinding at you from the recesses of your mind- just go for it. The glory I and many others experienced back then can still be rekindled today. It's never too late to embark upon a creation that even if it's not successful, it'll be fulfilling knowing you tried. You contributed to the modifications culture we still crave. This was a wonderful comment and If you complete the map let me know if you'd like a play tester.

Edit: I agree, 1.6 was probably one of the best versions, but 1.5 was really really good too. To be honest I can't recall the difference between the two versions.
