Sorry to hear you were homeless. I drove a city bus for 9 years in Phoenix and developed a soft spot for the homeless that nobody will do anything about. Because there is no money in it for them. There are more homeless than one can imagine. You just do not see it, unless you are in it like I was with the bus. Never turned away a single one. Especially to and from the soup kitchen. Most of us are on tragedy away from it. Very scary. Glad you climbed out somehow.
I’ve been homeless myself, and I’m sad to say, it is a pretty common misconception that “no one will do anything about it.” Myself and the people I knew habitually chose drugs over the shelter/shelter programs with paths to assisted housing. The shelters and programs required that we undergo drug treatment (and take it seriously) and we chose to get high instead. Once I made the other decision, I owned a home within 4 years of sleeping outside. It’s not that no one will help. We just can’t recognize help when it’s offered sometimes.
It's like my dad singing to me. Right. Every time I see this I tear up. Who'd have thought we'd never see Papa Bear again.

I watched my father give up in 2016 and played this song to ease my mind. He passed away in 2020. Family business we made into a 50 year success finally took its toll.
You know I’ve specifically not watched this footage after seeing it come up in my feed a few times cause I didn’t think I could handle it. I was right. It got me.
This song chokes me up every time..... especially when he's digging into those so many so many roads toward the end and everyone in the crowd cheers after each word
First time I caught this one on TH-cam was when I was on a road trip with girlfriend and the two dogs. So many roads ago I traveled East Coast West Coast Grateful Dead. But I had lived a pretty normal establishment life for many years. We drove Boston (where she had done her Masters) back our life on West Coast. The puppies and girlfriend went to sleep in the motel and I caught this and it hit me. Oh, it hit me. Long time since I’d been on the road like that. I cried my eyes out. Oh God did i cry. It was old friends, places, miles between, Jerry and those guys. I cried like baby. What a performance. And I knew it was Jerry’s last . Good to know I wasn’t only one crying
This song brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it. Hope you'll do more reaction video's in the future and please consider doing a lesson on this song. Certainly one of my favorites as well. I only had the chance to see Jerry and Grateful Dead once on April 4, 1995 the first of two nights in Birmingham, Alabama. I wasn't real familiar with them other than the songs that were always played on local radio, but on a whim my roommates at the time and I decided to go check them out and see why people followed them from town to town. While many long time deadheads consider those 2 nights some of the worse shows, for me it was a magical night. It was such a complete different vibe from all other concerts I had been to and the hippies were great. My roommates didn't dig it as much as I did but I felt like I had finally found my people. The next day I went out and bought One From The Vault, Dead Set, American Beauty and Workingman's Dead based on the recommendation of the store clerk. I think my roommates got a little aggravated when all I wanted to listen to after that night was Grateful Dead.
For a lot of us on tour then, this was the end of those roads we were traveling. I made it to Deer Creek that summer tour , gave my Soldier Field tickets to my friend and headed back east where I was living at the time. My friend was set on seeing every show because somehow he knew Jerry would be leaving us. He just felt it. I thought I would just pick up on winter tour and life would be the same......I was wrong. Man , was I wrong. Life has never been the same.
I was at the riverport shows right before soldier field. I remember Liberty encore on the last night. They played a bunch of late hunter tunes that summer. I remember seeing Jerry look like the wizard like you described. I had followed the dead for years at that point and I walked out of that amphitheater knowing, for some strange reason, this would be the last time I saw Jerry. I said goodbye leaving that night. Magnificent career and musician.
Bro I miss Jerry so much and everything that he brought to my life and millions of other lives. He truly was a modern day Renaissance man, he made me smile he made me laugh and he made me wonder but most of all he taught me to love. Thanks Davey, be safe my brother peace. 😎✌🤪💨💨💨🌅🌈🌌🌉🐢🐻
This cuts deep. I hope this channel brings you everything you need in life Davy. Caught them for the first time at Highgate 95. God I wish I had jumped on the bus earlier in my 60 year life.
Had to come back to this today 27 years after it was performed... this version was one of the 1st dead songs I ever heard over 3 years ago when my dad randomly put on the grateful dead satellite station... to say it changed my life is an understatement.
Great video, Davvy, love it. Love all you do. Really appreciate your love, dedication, humor, talent, and kindness. This song and “Days Between” are two songs from the final years that never fail to move me. Just beautiful. I had the good fortune to catch a few dozen Dead shows in the 80s, and saw a handful in the 90s, as well as some JGB shows and a Bobby show when he toured with Rob Wasserman in the early 90s. I caught my final Dead show in summer of ‘93. Soldier Field, so just about two years before this show. I probably just hadn’t been in the wrong place at the right time before, but it was the first and only show where I saw a heroin overdose. I have to admit, it haunted me for quite a while. Still kind of does. But the band sounded good and put on some great shows that summer. Jerry seemed better - healthier - than he was in ‘95. Everyone who saw him had the same reaction you did, Davvy. They could see it. They knew he was using again, hard, and it was bittersweet that last summer. Such a paradox when news of his death broke. No one was all that surprised but everyone was still shocked and it cut deep. Thanks for keeping the incredible creativity and art of this band alive and fun!
Dude! Love your channel. You da man. A stone cold 'head to the bone. Thank you for sharing your awesome, sincere honest self. "So Many Roads" has always been a personal favorite and the on from 3-25-1993, Chapel Hill, NC is the best I've heard yet. One of my top 5 all time performances!
I love all of your lesson videos, but I think this is your best video. It was great to see how much this song means to you, and how Music can create so much emotion for us all.
For some reason, this tune was never on my radar before. Now I’m totally into it, thanks! The way you shared your love for this - excellent! Subscribed ✅⭐️❤️
My dad was at this show in 95, he went to a bunch around this time period it was all sold out but he had my aunt who was a senior in hs go to the Ticketmaster and buy 8 tickets for every night somehow and they went with her to her first dead shows, now they go to all the Chicago dead and co shows, and he’s taking me to the one next month in Chicago, my first dead show as an adult, we used to go to gathering of the vibes every year from like 07-2011 and I loved it as a kid.I was luckily raised on the dead, and as a guitarist I’m glad I was.
I believe that this was Jerry’s swan song, which is probably why Dead & co have yet to cover it?…but I get a big frog in my throat and a tear down my cheek every time I hear it…I know my own time is coming and I’m looking forward to see Jerry play it in Heaven.

Bud, I was at those shows too. I'll never forget hearing So Many Roads. I looked at my ol' Dead buddy and we just knew, he was done. Man looked and sounded so frail at those shows at the end. Heartbreaking. But he could still just grab you. Blessed to have seen the boys a lot during my college years. Was some of the best times of my life and their music has powered me thru life. Thanks Davvey - love ya man!
Dave my friend, I just gotta let you know, I always said this was Jerry's swan song...I cry each and every time I listen to it bro, and to see somebody else get it as deeply as I do, makes it even better buddy...thank you, thank you, thank you...I just turned 50 in September, and I was lucky enough to have seen The Silvered Haired Angel 37 times, although I got on the bus late in early '91 and missed Brent, I saw the best "person" in my lifetime perform my friend...I can just see how this song gets you the same way it gets me bro...he gave us everything he had right to the end...he passed exactly one month later...I cried for days...crazy, someone who I never met, had such an impact on me when he passed...miss Jerry every. single. day. brother...unfortunately I'm homeless at the moment myself buddy, and I have my sixteen year old son with me(we're actually in a hotel), so I can relate...the Dead have gotten me thru so much...thanks for being real and doing what you do bud...peace, love, and happiness to you and yours my friend...staying Grateful...✌🏻💀💨🎸🐅🥀🐢⚡🐊🍄🔉🔊🎶

They cut out a chunk for the so many roads box set version where he doubles back because it’s a mess up, but it’s just fine with it that there. No other FA base cheers at mistakes
We loved that they were human, just like us. We learned to embrace our flawed humanity. But these days, all mistakes are hidden. Everyone now lives in Disneyland. So when they encounter a real tiger, they get confused. They don't get why we prefer a mangy, wild, unpredictable tiger over a clean, shiny (plastic) one. You can certainly polish a plastic tiger, but it will still won't do anything new.
