1980 to 1995 were the best years of my life, because that was when I was following the Grateful Dead on tour as much as I could. Maine, Florida, Wisconsin, New York, Ohio, North Carolina, and many points in between. The video was shot at Laguna-Seca Raceway near Monterey, California, after a show. Other goodies from The Dead: "Shakedown Street", "Sugar Magnolia>Sunshine Daydream", "Truckin' ", "Help On The Way>Slipknot>Franklin's Tower" and "Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain". Welcome aboard the bus.
The story I heard is that when they filmed this video they just announced at one of their concerts that anyone who wanted to help the band out could stay after the concert to do so. That was how they got the crowd for the video and the fans got some fun times with the band.
It was Laguna seca in 1987. We camped out for three days for 2 shows. Around midnight after one of the shows some folks from the dead came around and started asking people if they wanted to see the band play and film a video. Some said they announced it earlier but we just heard them and of course everyone awake followed. We thought it would be a bunch of jamming, but it was hours of them replaying and just a recording playing touch of grey while they manipulated and filmed the skeletons "playing". Still very cool
Hey now. Opened a can with this one. Thousands of us followed this band across the country for decades. Myself in the '88 fall tour then on to New Years in Oakland, topping it off with the LA Forum. Way more than just a band. It was a lifestyle and for some, life period. I believe they still hold the record for the most money made in live shows beating out even Michael Jackson.
Technically the only song that hit near the top of the charts in the Dead's 30 year history. They came to fame from live performances, of which they performed over 2,000 shows across the world - the most for any rock band. After they broke up in 95 they played in different variations for the next .. well, they are still playing - just not as the Grateful Dead. The reason this video was done the way it was to show this band, with all it has gone through, still survives. RIP Jerry Garcia.
Although there are many recording session songs from which to choose, go live as much as possible when listening to the Dead. Their live performances are untouched. They float between rock, country, blue grass, blues, Jazz and eclectic world music all within the same show. And although they did over 2000 shows while as the grateful dead, they used no setlists. 16 - 22 songs each night they just thought of to play while on the stage. And they have a library of original and covers to choose from.
I will agree with an earlier post Truckin, and add Sugar Magnolia, and Terapin Station!!! They were the longest continuing to tour band ever and the Deadheads followed like a band of gypsies!!!!!
I was there that night . they did a full concert at the Greenska which is surrounded by the campgrounds which everyone was at well after it had gotten dark we could see the lights go back on at the arena and the doors were open and on a smaller stage than the mainstage they did the video. They would do one part of the song And then while the technical people were making adjustments they would do three or four other songs just like a regular concert. Recall it lasted most of the night and the sun was just starting to come up when it was over.
One of the concert venues I work at has a sculpture of Jerry Garcia (August 1, 1942 -August 9, 1995) the lead singer and guitarist. Every year for his birthday there is a party with a couple bands, food and drink and Jerry’s statue gets covered in roses, one of the symbols most associated with the Grateful Dead. It’s gorgeous 🌹🥀🌹
@ Kathy, Lulu and Donna..The Grateful Dead made this song theirs. It was written and recorded by Robert Hunter. Jerry liked the song , he rewrote the melody.
Hello to three beautiful Texas ladies a awesome video of a classic rock band for donnas and chads time from the grateful head opps I mean the grateful dead now I want some pizza lol. Wintersun Alex in Texas ❄️❤️
Being a San Francisco Bay Area native & the Grateful Dead being from the Haight-Ashbury of San Francisco late 60s I have heard and seen and been around the whole Grateful Dead scene most of my life. I have a friend of mine, who plays in a Grateful Dead extension band with some of the members Their colt following of their fans is absolutely crazy. Pick any popular musician of today and the Grateful Dead has them beat. Those fans would follow them around the country just to see their shows.
Casey Jones, Dire Wolf, Truckin', Dark Star, Doin' That Rag, Rosemary, Cumberland Blues, Sage & Spirit, Help On The Way, New Speedway Boogie. Edited out of Woodstock film, they played in Festival Express film instead 🎸☮️🍄
Massive huge fan base! Very little radio play, mostly word of mouth, and famously long jan sessions! They create a lot of songs during their jam sessions! And when Jerry Garcia passed, his ashes were released in outer space during one of NASA's Space Shuttle missions!
The Grateful Dead are one of the longest-lasting rock bnds, being together for exactly 30 years, starting in 1965, and ending only with the death of the bandleader, Jerry Garcia. In that time, "Touch [of Grey" was their ONLY top-ten hit, making them, technically, the most enduring of "one-hit wonders"! I love them.
Great reaction! I'd recommend LIVE versions of the following songs: Cumberland Blues, Eyes of the World, Let it Grow, Terrapin, China Cat Sunflower, I Know You Rider, Lost Sailor, Saint of Circumstance, the Wheel.... just for starters. Stick with anything from the 70's - mid 80's. Then explore further, but be warned, it's a serious rabbit hole!! Enjoy!
Thank you for this reaction to a Grateful Dead. They have allot of Fans. This is relatively late in their career . This song was written in 1987 -The leader of the band -Jerry Garcia -died in 1995. They disbanded after that.
I love the Dead but Im a real sucker for the Jerry ballads. Stella Blue, Warf Rat, Mission in the Rain, Brokedown Palace, Ripple, China Doll, Ship of Fools, and so many more.. Something about Jerry's plaintive but emotional voice just gets to me. Plus the magnificent poetry of Robert Hunter, one of the best lyricists to ever pick up a pen.
It was fun to hear you mention Broken Bow, OK. I live in Minnesota, and grew up in Minnesota and North Dakota, but my mother was from Wright City, and Broken Bow came into many of the stories she told of her teenage years. Thank you for bringing a smile. Oh, and great song and fun reaction, too.
The Dead were portrayed as skeletons, yet Jerry still had his man-boobs. That kind of self-deprecating humor is just SO Grateful Dead. They stayed humble and never saw themselves as above or different from the fans; other than having more responsibilities at a gig.
Ben and Jerry’s has an ice cream named for Jerry Garcia the lead singer (RIP). Truckin is a great song you should do next. Dead Heads and dancing bears forever.
The GD only had 2 top hits, this and "Truckin". They hated the studio so toured for like 30 years. Unlike other bands, they welcomed "bootleg" recording of their shows, partly because they never performed a song the same way twice if they could avoid it. They were true legends and people would actually follow them from show to show.
that ain't Grateful Dead - THIS was Grateful Dead (one out of thousands of nights!) - the night they wandered into playing a cover of The Beatles "Day Tripper" - enjoy th-cam.com/video/BQbbDoeJg3k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=FroMU7KFELplp0nu&t=7448
That album came out in maybe 1987? (Some on explain to the kid that that was an actual year that happened. ;) ) Jerry Garcia had recently recovered from some kind of coma, possibly diabetic, and when he sang "I will get by" the audience would explode, although Grateful Dead audiences tend to explode a lot. This is far from my favorite GD song, but asking for recommendations is...a bit foolhardy. People will have a *lot* of suggestions. Even restricting it to shows that were actually caught on film, you've got Veneta '72, the epic '78 New Year's show, etc. etc. etc....
I know the rent is in arrears, the dog has not been fed in years It's even worse than it appears, but it's alright Cow is giving kerosene, kid can't read at seventeen The words he knows are all obscene, but it's alright
To hear what made Grateful Dead what they were, I think you need to go back to the old stuff, the Dark Star from Live/Dead, Captain Trips era type of stuff. This MTV video was decades later.
Yyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhhhh The Grateful Dead. Live......hello girls🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Ba-Boom! Pretty cool! Lulu! Lulu dressed modestly, exuding class!
I followed the Dead from 91 to 95. Best years of my life. Its a lifestyle and cultural phenomenon. Ty lasses! ⚡️💀⚡️....☘️🇺🇲
This really is a beautiful song. Thank you.😊

Thanx! Love the dead!

The Grateful Dead and their Dead Heads was/is their own sub-culture. One of the greatest bands with few awards to show for it.
This has always been my favorite song and video by this iconic band.
Excellent choice!!!!!!!!!!
The bus came by and on climbed Donna, Kathy and Lulu, that's when it all began....

A good one to do is "Truckin".
William... True from you! Truckin'

Best video, great great song. Witty lyrics. Really strikes a chord 36 years(?) later.
😊🤙🏼🎶🔥❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
I remember seeing this video on mtv in 87 i believe... Just Hilarious
Thanks!
Thank you so much
I've always liked how they change it from I will survive, to we will survive, at the end.

They just played the sphere in Las Vegas well everyone minus pig pen, jerry and phill. They are still rocking

"In the land of the dark, the ship of the sun is guided by the grateful dead"
...passage from the ancient 'Egyptian Book of the Dead'
Hello to three beautiful Texas ladies a awesome video of a classic rock band for donnas and chads time from the grateful head opps I mean the grateful dead now I want some pizza lol. Wintersun Alex in Texas ❄️❤️
Our local top 40 station HAD to play this song! A lot of bad music was top 40 at this time, this is a quality song.
it is a concert but redone into a music video....the dead and the dead-heads (followers) loved LSD...so that made this video much more special

This video was done so cool! I liked the dog stealing the bone from the drummer! Thanks for the fun reaction, ladies!
Glad you enjoyed it!

@@mattjohn4731 Festival Express is a definite for anyone wanting to get into live Dead.

Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream is named after the Grateful Deads lead singer Jerry Garcia.
Was going to mention this, but I figured someone must have beaten me to it. 😉
I was in the audience for the filming of this video. It was blast.👌✌️😁
I bet that was awesome.
The dead are currently playing The Sphere in Vegas till mid August
Truckin' is a good song! Casey Jones is funky as heck! Ripple is a masterpiece!

Hey guys here is another GD song if you liked that one. The name is West L.A. Fade away give it a listen
It was a real show, and they filmed it afterwards with the real audience
"I see you got your list out, say your peace and get out, I think I got
the gyst of it..."

As a long time head, I’d suggest listening to the studio recording of “Ripple” next, then listen to a live performance of “Morning Dew” after that.
I love the song. I wasn't a dead head but respect them.
You should watch a live performance of "Eyes of the World" by The Grateful Dead. It's long, but worth it!
Thank you for this reaction to a Grateful Dead. They have allot of Fans. This is relatively late in their career . This song was written in 1987 -The leader of the band -Jerry Garcia -died in 1995. They disbanded after that.
When I was in highschool in the 80's , i knew a guy who dropped out to follow the Dead around the country . Always wondered what happened to him.
Seen a couple suggestions!
TRUCKIN!!! SUGAR MAGNOLIA,,,, and
CASEY JONES (you better,,, watch your speed!!!)!! Peace Man!! 🕊️☮️♾️😎
My most fav song from TGD.

In The Dark is a great album!!!
So Did LULU like their hair :) just had a touch of grey, lol. Jerry Garcia looked like a biker from back in the day!
I'm not a "Dead Head", but I dig this one.
There's also a Broken Bow, Nebraska.
Cool
Eric Clapton 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Enjoyed you enjoying the Dead.

Alabama Getaway. I am NOT a deadhead by any stretch. But they did have a couple okay songs.
SAW THEM BACK IN THE EARLY 80S LOL!!!!
The Dead were portrayed as skeletons, yet Jerry still had his man-boobs. That kind of self-deprecating humor is just SO Grateful Dead. They stayed humble and never saw themselves as above or different from the fans; other than having more responsibilities at a gig.
We're those filled with birdseed? They somehow made Jerry fat... as a SKELETON! Also, that was a real concert audience.
And no there were no deep vees for Kathy this time lol. Wintersun Alex ❄️❤️
We had a restaurant called The Gratefull Fed
I urge to keep reacting to the Grateful Dead. You won’t like all of it but you’ll love what you love. Warning…. It’s like going down a rabbit hole.
Ben and Jerry’s has an ice cream named for Jerry Garcia the lead singer (RIP). Truckin is a great song you should do next. Dead Heads and dancing bears forever.
The great full dead were from San Francisco California
You think that was cool you should check out When the Music's Over By the Doors oh my God
The original jam band.
There is a location in Hot Springs as well. never been there tho...
Try 'Brown-Eyed Women' from the Europe '72 LP, or anything else from it. I consider it a high-water mark. Cheers, --bd
I have this on 45 I got it from my mom. Only dead thing I own lol
There is a Grateful Dead movie!

RIP Phil Lesh bass player passed away today.
Check out ”just a little light” by the dead 😉
Savianos in Euless on Main ST is the best Pizza in Texas!!
For something different by the band try "Estimated Prophet" studio version.
Ice cream chain, Ben and Jerry’s has a flavor named after Jerry Garcia… Cherries Garcia
