    I am the owner of the boots seen above. Steve is a kind, professional, humorous and artistic soul. His communication was second to none throughout the process. I did not ask for, nor expect to be, the subject of one of his videos--but I am proud to be one of the lucky few to have this privilege. I just wanted my boots redone well enough to see another 14 years of life. These were made in 2006 by Jimmie Luke Covington in Gardner, Massachusetts. Calfskin vamp and combination calf/kangaroo leather shaft. I am originally from Kansas, but life and career took me away from the farm. When I could afford it, I wanted a special pair I could have for the rest of my life. Jimmie made that a reality. Thank you to Steve for his craftsmanship and artistry. He made this a special event in my life. :) And thank you to everyone here for the kind words and debate!

    for 100k you should go around your city and find the person who wears the most battered shoes. bring them to your studio, restore them and give them back to him/her.
    would be kinda of cool to see the owner reaction, putting a smile on a stranger face and giving forward the community.
    drop a thumb up so steve can see this.

    So impressed with your work on these boots. The gentlemen I knew in Texas as a child wore fine boots. An exquisite pair of boots were the epitome of fine dressing for a cowboy. The boots they wore said a great deal about the man. Your work makes me proud. Thank you for that trip down memory lane.

    I have an old pair of Justin lizards that I hadn't worn in some years because of the lousy repair job done on them some time back. I live not too far from Snellville Shoe and Boot repair so I took them on over for Scott and Zane to do their thing. Well I'll tell ya, new full JR soles, new stack leather heels, complete recondition of the lizard that was dry as the Mojave, the end result was as good as Steve would have hammered out. These boots look new, and weathered. That's what I wanted. If you have cowboy boots that need work, give those boys at Snellville a shout. You won't regret it.

  • @krenwregget7667

    I'm curious about the wood pegs because as a carpenter, it is my understanding that moisture causes wood to expand and when it dries, it contracts which is why wood has to be below a certain moisture content (usually between 6-12%) to be usable for furniture building. The last thing you want to do is build with wet wood and then have it dry out because it will pull your joints apart and cause other problems.
    I would reason that it's the wet leather that makes the difference because once it dries, it's constricting around the wooden pegs causing a very tight joint. Regardless, beautiful work as usual.

    • @jeffreygoss8109
      @jeffreygoss8109 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I believe you are correct. If wet the leather it must expand. As a riveter we can heat a hole and it will expand and allow a rivet in. Same principal I guess.

    • @alifan44
      @alifan44 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jeffreygoss8109 As wet leather dries, it shrinks (contracts). The wet leather shrinks around the wooden pegs. I'm not what glue itself contributes to the process. Bottom line: If Steve puts it together, it ain't coming apart (unless you add turpentine/thinner and yank the hell out it with a pair of pliers or a pry bar.)!

    • @Jesse-B
      @Jesse-B 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The pegs go into the glue dry, wet to touch is what he is describing, before the glue dries, the wood is soaking it up, expanding, then setting that way. Perfect joint.

    I like it better when the heal of my boots are glued. It seems like the boots I have that are not glued get little rocks under the rubber and I can feel them when I walk. But the glued heals never have that problem . I vote for glued heals.

    I just got myself 2 small cans of Master all-purpose cement, after watching you. I like it. It does not get super stiff. Some of the other leather glue I used for making a wallet or small nick-nacks, that glue gets so hard it makes the leather not feel natural around the edges. So thanks. Plus I like the logo on the can. It's pretty cool too.

    Lovely Lovely
    .
    ...and the glue does help keep dirt/grit out of the seam/joint ..
    I have seen welts packed with sand and was like sandpaper, the welt area - thread and all just chewed up .. every step grinding the grit into the threads, etc... any tiny gap gets packed and over time. It works it's way in, and forces the joint open / lets water in.... we have had heels fall apart.. found the hollow spaces full of grit/ dirt/ manure (farm life)..
    .
    Funny story - ears ago I got my shoes wet with a fish emulsion fertilizer-- (very high in organic nitrogen)
    less than 2 weeks the shoes started falling apart... naturally occurring soil/ fertilizer bacteria ate the connecting layers, the padding and paper fillers.. no joke..

    What a pleasure to see some really well-constructed boots, as opposed to those overpriced Italian shoes with super cheap construction.
    Year ago when I worked the Renaissance Faire I spent what was then a great deal of money for me on a pair of custom high-top moccasins from a maker in San Francisco. This was the kind of close-fitting moc where they take the exact shape of your foot and ankle with duct tape and a sock; when finished it fits your foot exactly. Just in case anyone thinks that shoemakers and cobblers do the same kind of thing, when a side seam popped and the soles wore down a couple of years later, I went back to have him fix it. When he'd repaired and resoled it, I couldn't even get my foot into it anymore. He'd totally disregarded (or didn't feel like dealing with) the issue of preserving the fit on resoling, and made them much more snug. Seriously pissed me off, and I never had really decent footwear for those events again afterward.

    Wood does not expand as it dries. It shrinks. Wood expands when wet. Lemon wood pegs are used in boot making for their ability to expand and contract at the same rate as leather.

    Fascinating. I love the quality of manufacturing and repair whilst thinking the boots are hideous 🤔😂

    Those pegs, love them. I had a pair of west german army jack boots that had no nails only pegs. they lasted for years. In wet weather field work the nails tend to rust, the pegs expand and contract with the leather. and no rust.
