Greetings from Budapest, Vass is just a few corner from here. Vass is one of the well known Hungarian shoe brand, so I always wanted to see one of these from the inside.
(The Hungarian s sound is not the same as the English, it pronounced like the sh in the word "sheet" or "FlorSHeim". So phonetically like Budapesht and Vash. (Vass is an older written version of the family name Vas (means iron))

I started my collection (ridiculously large now) by buying a pair of Allen Edmonds 0n Ebay for $40 and had a half sole and heel plate put on by the local Cobbler for $45. Bought a set of shoe trees for $5 at a thrift store and refurbished them myself. So for about $100 I had a pair of beautiful Oxfords. And I've been hooked on doing it over and over. Sometimes I get lucky and can get them for $5 to 15 at thrift stores also.

Surprising indeed Vass does not use stacked leather heels. As you say, functionally not an issue but having gone through all the trouble to craft a beautiful shoe like these then not go the whole hog... And yes, *ouch* to see that lovely new JR sole be removed.
On another note, it’s always fun to see how sedate Steve starts off his videos explaining what’s to come... makes the candid/humour that follows as the video progresses all the more enjoyable!

I just bought a pair less than a month ago and they are probably the most handsome pair in my collection. Now I am waiting on a pair of Yeossal (with spade soles) and I can't wait! Quite disappointed with the fiber board stuff. Love how craftsmen like Steve, Trenton and Heath, and Weston from Rose Anvil give us an inside out look at products deemed as "the highest quality" but they end up not being all that. This really shows how much we should question some of these TH-camrs who swear by some products but are proven wrong by these experts. Thank you Steve! Now let's continue!

In the EU these shoes cost 559€.
That's not terribly expensive for hand made shoes, I can see why they cut some corners that don't impact the overall experience too much.
They went for a cheaper heel stack but used JR leather soles - a good decision in my book instead of stacked leather heel blocks and a lesser sole leather.

You and sharp edges, Steve. I've watched from the beginning and you've always had an attraction to them (sharp edges). Personally, most of us can't get far enough away from cutting tools and our hands don't shake! Love watching and learning about shoes, manufacturers and what they do and don't do. Guess that's because I have chronic foot problems; education is a great thing. Thank You, again.

I realize that this is an old video, and so @BedosLeatherworksLLC is unlikely to see it, but I figured I'd make a comment nonetheless for the algorithm's sake. This is a VERY interesting video for a few reasons.
First, the quality of the workmanship is incredible. All top shelf materials treated with the proper care by a highly skilled craftsman. That sole ended up a work of art, and I'm not sure that I'd enjoy scuffing that outsole through regular wear, but kudos to the client for being less fussy than me.
Second, it's a shame to see Vass cutting corners. Of course, Vass isn't selling at a Saint Crispin's level price but even so -- Vass, raise your MSRP by $25 and use a full grain heel stack! It's totally lame not to. And also, three nails isn't enough. Spend the extra 15 seconds to drive a few more!
Third, I'm not sure why the client bought these shoes which at current exchange rates would probably cost around $480, assuming that he bought them from the RTW collection, and then paid $650 to have the soles redone. Gaziano & Girling and Cleverley both offer a similar upper design with a spade sole, for not much more money and allow MUCH more customization.

I love the patterns you do on the soles.I know that you charge a lot to do them, I also know that the cost and the job you do are relevant to each other , BUT to someone like me disabled living on benefits those shoes are exorbitant money. I could not afford to buy those shoes let alone change them. What I don't understand is why spend such a massive amount of money on 1 pair of shoes then pay out as much again to change the sole, why not just have a pair specially made to your specifications & save tearing them apart?
I do love your work Steve you are a true artist & Master Cobbler.

I have several bespoke pairs from Vass and the size is never marked on the bottom (because they’re bespoke)!😀 I’ve never seen them offer a spade sole either. The cost is around $650 for traditional calfskin. I’m going to ask Vass if they offer this sole. Steve’s sole is pure art!

I have a pair of shoes which I bought a few years ago and wore only a few times over a year or two. Unfortunately, the shoes were a bit tight but I liked it and did not put away. Over time, I've noticed that the sole broke right where the outsole and the heel meets. I don't think the sole is leather-made. Anyway, my question is can I send it to you and have it repaired. The most important thing for me is the leather and the cutting or the shape and as long as these are kept, the sole you can be replaced by any of the same thickness. Thank you

Almost 100k subs! True craftsman ship as usual. Can’t wait for a tour of your personal shoe collection Steve. Probably some interesting and incredible shoes in there! On another note can’t wait for the take apart the machine video!

Nice touch on the french tip, nice to see that being handcrafter to fit perfectly and not a stamp. As always, amazing attention to detail.

Steve - Did I hear you correctly - you can stich the sole by hand? No Landis? Through that thick piece of JR leather? I feel like that would be a video worthy of 100,000 views.

What I don't understand is how someone can buy shoes, and get the complete sole replaced before having worn it down. It is one more sign of how spoilt alot of people are. Of course, I highly approve of how Bedo does it. Lovely craftsmanship.

Also a waste of resources! A nice JR sole never worn, thrown out.

You might want to start using a hammer for only hammering nails so you don't keep marring your good hammer.

So this customer is going to get a better quality shoe for $650. Instead of buying brand new shoe's for $800 or more. THAT sounds like a better deal. But Will They last for another 25 year's. TO WEAR. AWESOME REPAIR.
