What is a Polestar 1? The Hybrid Muscle Car You Can Buy With Art

  • I have been aware of the Polestar brand for quite some time - like many, from the time they made a very funky version of the older Volvo V60. However, in the last few years they have become their own entity and now I get to drive the first car to wear exclusively Polestar badging - the inventively named "1".
    Polestar are a brand all about the electric future, so why then did they make their first car a hybrid - and what is it really all about?

    Saying that it is only 4 and a half meters long made me realise that in an alternate universe this would be the most spectacular c70 that could have existed (of course with less batteries, if any, and no carbon but still). Pitty that affordable coupes from mainstream manufacturers are a thing of the past.

      My thoughts entirely as an owner of a C70 there is nothing to replace it with, so we're hanging onto it until the wheels fall off. Polestar 1 is a great car but essentially unachievable for the most of us, whereas, well there's a C70 we bought new sitting in the drive.

      Same. And so true for so many cars these days.
      Especially considering what used cars you can get for that money.
      The thing is that cars haven't necessarily been getting better the past few years.
      More technological gizmos maybe, but we pretty much reached the peak of combustion engine cars 8-10 years ago.
      Any super-/hypercar from 2012 onward will be a great machine.
      So I don't think I'd spend that kind of money on something brand-new.

      @@TML34 it’s simple, I’m a business owner in Belgium, therefore I had a decent amount of money to buy a decent car, to pay as little taxes as possible, as you want obviously, company cars have to be either electric or Hybrid with an emission of less than 50g/km co2, I wanted to seat 4 people and be able to carry some goods, so a big boot is a plus. Coming from a Lexus with 140hp I wanted to step it up a notch. Initially I wanted the new defender hybrid, but I would pay way to much tax, because it has to much emissions. I have problems with my spine, and comfort is important to me, I went on test drives with most of what the Germans had to offer, but never liked their seats, until now, I’ve only sat comfortably in Lexus and Volvo seats. Given these limitations I think I made the right decision, regardless of the seats.
      I also like the fact no one knows what it is, I have to go to my clients in this car and they just see an ordinary (pearl) white Volvo, if that was a Merc, Audi, BMW or Porsche they’d instantly assume things like “oh, that’s what you’re spending or money on”
      Edit: Also I was able to buy it used from a dealership with ~5k miles, the owner of that dealership actually drove it for 3 months, so I got a better price than a new one. It is the spec I wanted so I didn’t have to make any compromises

      Considering the noble m600 used that engine with twin turbos for 600hp, I'd say one of these with a similar set up would have probably 550hp. This thing would've been a rocket because with a big v8 like that, because they wouldn't put in the hybrid power train. This is all assuming the car would be below 1800kg, because people forget batteries are very heavy.

      It should absolutely tank initially. The only thing that could potentially save it is the limited production, but then it's not limited to 30 worldwide is it? To get an idea of demand, Ferrari sold 1519 488s for £100k more in 2017 alone while this is still on sale 4 years later. It's probably going to make a Range Rover look like a Ford Fiesta in terms of maintenance in 10 years, it's an unknown brand with no history or much hype. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner and the drivetrain is just the T8 with a remap and bigger motor/batteries and it looks like an S60 coupé out and just an S60 inside. I can't see anything to maintain a high price. I think it will be like the Renault Clio V6 perhaps, i.e. plummet and then in 15 years creep back up a bit.

    This car is the personification of Shelbys famous quote: HP sell cars - torque wins races.
    600hp sound good on paper, until you look into the technical specs.
    Petrol is 328hp what comes from the 'little' 2.0 engine and the power is send only to the front wheels.
    Electric is 232hp and that power goes to the rear.
    So, what ever you do, you might get assisted 'launch' but thats it. In the end you drive a 330hp front-wheel drive 2.3tonne car - that can't be fast.
    And for 140k, this car is what Hublot is in the watchworld - overpriced garbage.
    I don't like what happened to Volvo - they used to make great cars, now the whole range is sold with one engine, the 2.0 is pretty much in every car.
    If I want a big, luxurious executive, I want the engine with that, and despite I like the design of the S90, it only comes with a 2.0 4pot.
    Considering the price, I rather buy a 5 or 7 series with a 6cyl hybrid, what has the sound to go with the presents of the car.
    I miss the times when Volvo did built fast estates. We used to have a 245DL, and I have still photos of that car - I owned a few Volvos myself and loved the cars.
    The new ones, are not my cup of tea, not because of the design, more because I can't identify with their.... message?!

    Love the exterior looks, hate the interior...God those air vents look cheap in an American car kinda way and so does the rest....there s no way, I could imagine this kinda money being spent on something like this. They did a clever thing with the art (market) reference and it actually applies even though I kinda doubt it s what they intended. In the art market, it s all about what it s worth in ppl s eyes or about investment...not so much about the potential alternatives. The Polestar 1 wins over a Taycan for example if speculation in this "art market" is your thing or if you find it rly that special. In the world where it s about cold facts or without such emotions (speculation is an emotion), it s simply dreadful what it offers as an overall product.

    Sorry but I could never spend £150k on an S60 coupé with a vacuum cleaner engine with a bigger hybrid and a remap. Why you would buy one of these over an Audi R8 for £40k less is beyond me. If you want something rare, buy an Audi R8 and a Ford Scorpio. You could get double glazing standard on an Audi A8 11 years ago for about 1/3 of the price of this.

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Double glazing has been around since the very early 90s at least, but thats not really the point of this car. Its a concept car for the road, as he said. R8s and Ford Scorpions are not really a comparison to make.

      @@GoldenCroc Sorry, it isn't. "concept car for the road" is probably what the marketing department want people to say to make £150k sound okay, but it doesn't mean anything. It's a road car and the interior & styling is a copy & paste of the rest of the Volvo range. If this is a "concept car for the road" then so is the LC500 for half the price, in fact it is more so for half the price.

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MRFUCKOFF202 Isnt what? A concept car for the road? Unfortunately, it just seems you are unaware of what a concept car is. Most often they are not drivable, but if they are, they almost always use engines and cobbled together interiors from the other cars in the manufacturers range. This car fits the bill well.
      The fact that you dislike this car doesnt warrant changing the definition of words, if you ask me.
      A mass produced car can never be said to be a "concept car for the roads" of you ask me, so the lexus is right out.
      I will give you another example of a concept car for the road which is even more extreme: VW xl1. Perhaps that will make it more clear.

    • @MRFUCKOFF202
      @MRFUCKOFF202 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GoldenCroc Err no, that isn't what a concept car is. You do not showcase new deisgns and features by copying and pasting the production cars you've been making for years already. You think brands put concept cars on display to showcase nothing?? The Volvo Concept Coupe was a concept in 2013, showcasing the styling and interior designs that would debut in 2014 onwards. This is a production car with a limited run using the same styling several years later. A production car with limited run does not mean "concept car for the road", that's why I said it is probably marketing spiel to generate hype so people will pay £150k.
