As a resident of Gothenburg Sweden (hometown of Volvo and Polestar HQ) I see Polestar 2's probably more often than a Model 3. At least 30 Polestar 2 a day. One of my oldest friends designed the Polestar reflection in the sky roof, btw.🙂
I was a HUGE Volvo fan back in the early 00's (loved the rwd cars). I remember going to a VCOA show and seeing one of the first polestar S60's and said what the heck is that! My friend loved it, and I felt like it was blasphemy, 😆
@@volvo09 I hope to get a Volvo someday. I love their looks. I would love to get one of the old wagons and fix it up. I wonder how hard it would be to electrify one of those.
You've really got a knack for highly entertaining editing of your videos. It's just the right amount of punny, unhinged, but still captivating and informative. You're doing great, enjoy your new car!
One big reason why the polestar corners so well while weighing so much is the same across all EVs, they have a VERY low center of gravity, basically allowing them to feel like they're on tracks.
I had a chance to drive an electric small van (Citroen Berlingo) that I own a diesel version of. The electric version has way better weight distribution and thus handling. It was like driving two different cars
Robert, you are one of a select few TH-camrs who happen to genuinely calm me. I don't even need to be actively stressed out or anything, but your voice, cadence, video style and personality just make me calmer and happier. Keep being you and keep making great videos :)
Ok, Robert. You made that "double Polestar" pun and just kept going like we weren't supposed to pause the video and go back to be sure we heard what we thought we heard. Your humor and delivery is impeccable.
Your passengers just need to press the play button on the center console to restart the internal systems after the driver leaves. You can also use the app to set climate control if you have a pet in the car. When you kick for the boot (trunk) I find it's most reliable kicking forward then backward rather than any side to side movement. I have a DMLR midnight p*2 with pilot and plus and the Nappa seats (no performance pack) I managed to get it pre-configured delivered in about 3 weeks at the end of last year, I got fairly lucky.
12:37 me and you live in a very similar area. We have an alarm at our lock and dam that goes off whenever a gate is opened or about to be opened. This is for kayaks and small boats to get out of the way or out of the water.
I'm trying to figure out which I'd like to see more; them both driving in the Polestar 2 like they did with Alec's Ioniq 5 or them doing a caravan car trip a'la various motoring shows featuring 3 people.

Your argument for EVs is just really insightful and totally correct. It’s not just “it’s environmentally friendly and does incredible 0-60-times”. It’s actually just superior technology in every single way. Range will get there, charging infrastructure too.
Could you imagine If the next Polestar model was called the Polestar Flush?! Now that line about what comes after 1 and 2 would have much more meaning.
I see these almost every day. But I live in Sweden, so that kind of explains why. In Sweden, the Polestar 2 with performance package is about $5000 cheaper than the Tesla model 3 Performance. As a matter of fact, it is also $500 cheaper than the Model 3 Long range. I guess that also plays in to why it is more popular here.
@@orangejjay really strange though, when I looked at the pricing online, the polestar performance looks to be cheaper than the tesla model 3 in the us? Tesla is $62000 and polestar 2 performance is 57400
Where in sweden? I've been in Stockholm this summer and I mostly saw Tesla Model S/X, Mercedes EQS/EQE and a few Porsche Taycan. Also gonna say that being in a capital city without the noise of cars was one of the experiences that conviced me that EV's are the future.

Beautiful car. I stopped by the local Polestar showroom to sit in one and I was very impressed by the ergonomics. Extremely comfortable. I need to make an appointment to drive one soon.
I like that it has more "life" to the interior than a Tesla. I like Tesla's success as a "domestic" brand, but I can't stand how empty the interior is, it really is like a hospital waiting room, or if you were a mouse stuck inside a soda bottle... There's just nothing going on. If polestar (Volvo) focused on reducing the screen dependance (or voice control) for little items it would be almost perfect. I'm ok with a screen if I can pretty much ignore it. I want buttons.
The performance update you mention around 3:40 seems to have the same specs as the Performance Package specs you showed for your car. Are you sure you don't already have this update? The car looks very nice. I looked at the Polestar website and your pictures of the car color look much nicer than the ones on the website.

I have no idea why he is so enthusiastic about this car. Also, the prospects of you being able to afford it is getting worse by the day. People under 30 have never lived in a time with double digit interest rates or 2-3 year loan periods. 2 years ago, people with good credit could get a 7 year loan at ZERO APR. Those days are gone and they are not coming back. Given the price of this thing, there should not be any features that don't work. WHO wants a car running on Google? Be Evil is their new motto.
My mum recently got a 2022 Fiat 500e (2nd generation - not to be confused with the one sold in certain US states) in a quite beautiful tri coat blue. That thing has convinced me the future is electric, its extremely smooth and quiet, and even though it does 0-60 in around 9 seconds, the 0-30 time is about typical of an ice car that does it in 6.5-7, the acceleration off the line is incredible for 118hp. 199 miles of range is also very good and she can go 3 days without charging at home sometimes.
That's pretty decent performance for that sort of power figure. For stark contrast, I own a '99 Corolla which (at one time, likely not anymore) was rated at 120 hp @ 5600 rpm and 122 ft lb @ 4400, weighs roughly around 2400-2500 lbs net and has the 4spd auto; it was rated at about 10-10.5s 0-60 but real-world in my experience is around 11s.
It's always nice to see another car guy fall in love with a Polestar 2. I have loved manually shifted screaming or roaring ICE cars my whole life, and I still do, but they feel so 'caveman tech' ever since I first tried a Model S a few years ago. And yes, I still love that caveman tech, I like feeling like I'm shoveling coal into a steam engine, but not every single time I need to drive somewhere. There are still ICE cars (mostly older than me) that I dream of owning and building, but there are no ICE cars that will replace my Polestar 2 as a DD :)
Hey Robert, on the pilot assist… I’m guessing it has 99% of the hardware. If it’s like my S60 momentum I got a few years back (same wheel, buttons and radar etc) it simply needs a single hydraulic cylinder and a software update. I went to my local Volvo dealer and had it installed as an accessory, works amazing! Would be worth a try to talk to a dealer about it.
I just got my Polestar Polestar 2 a little over a week ago, and it's my first EV. I agree with a lot of the comments you've made - it's a car person's car that's not trying to be an EV. It's a fun car to drive with beautiful, child-bearing hips. I love the aesthetic, I love the ride quality, I love that people don't know it's an EV. I'm 6'3 and don't have any issue fitting in the car or remaining comfortable (something a lot of people complain about), and people sitting behind me don't have any issue either. I haven't taken it on a road trip yet and am anticipating frustrations with range and charging...but I'll still have a fun time driving the thing. And I've named it. Mjolnir. You know. After the headlights. Also, your channel is the only one I routinely watch - I absolutely love your style/humor. One of the most entertaining channels on YooToobs.

I don't like the idea of there being a paid OTA update to get better performance, like why not just give it as a free option on a $50K+ car that was designed for it, it's not like an aftermarket ECU reprogramming. (or the skeptic in me is saying they could've had the "update" ready long ago, and are squeezing extra cash out of their customers) At least it's not BMW's monthly heated seat subscription I guess...
Its literally just removing a limitation set by the stock software. I mean, with traditional automobiles you can modify the software and tune them, because the manufacturer may have set a limit for emissions reasons, but this is an EV. It doesn't have emissions.. they are literally selling performance that could have been included stock. Maybe they're trying to simulate a traditional car getting a new model with a better engine. They can go "Hey, It got more power now! It's neww" and just tweak a couple numbers.. though it's possible they don't have the infrastructure in the states to supply enough replacement parts for the increased wear on the vehicle. Still sucks though.
I already knew I can like two things - I love both AgeingWheels _and _ UnderDunne! Glad you got a car that suits you, and very nice to find out more about a not-Tesla too.
13:19 I saw a possible workaround for the "parking in accessory mode with the driver out of the seat" thing in an Alex on Autos video. He was able to film the headlights being on by leaving it in neutral with the parking brake on, should work for the climate control too I would think. Disadvantages: Also leaves things on like the headlights and the pedestrian warning noise, and presumably would still require the keyfob.
In the 1990s, daydreaming on my Saturday morning couch, I correctly preditcted that hybrid vehicles were the next logical step in car evolution. And I was right. Now I predict that ICE hybrids will be the next step forward, as gasoline contains a high amount of energy, and correctly converting that energy to electricity is the key. What I've also learned in the years in-between then and now, is that once we have cars that typically get 80-100 mpg, gasoline will be $20 a gallon. So nothing will really change. lol
aside - Polestar is an astronomy / navigation term, referencing the star above the north pole, Polaris. It is important as a navigational reference since it is *always* visible in the northern hemisphere's night sky, and is always 'north' of where you are. (in case none of the other 1436 comments mention this)
I think the Polestar 2's amazing cornering, in a addition to the performance suspension and valve dampers, has something to do with the battery pack lowering the center of gravity. Just don't let it get flooded: lots of EVs' battery packs have been catching fire after drying out from Hurricane Ian flood water submersion.
The cornering in the polestar and any EV is due to the battery being low, my model 3 has fantastic cornering as well. As for the EV packs getting wet, that sounds like a really big design flaw, I've driven through massive puddles and never once had any kind of issue.
@@mussdem it's the same as ICE cars getting flooded. Big puddles don't matter because the whole car isn't getting submerged in 2 feet of water for a couple days.
Most EVs should have sealed packs, if they're getting wet and catching fire then that's probably either a model specific design flaw or specific units that are damaged
@@Xatzimi Again, just flooding without other forms of damage should not damage the pack, it's sealed in the vast majority of EV designs. Half of them are water cooled, water on the outside of a system that's so well sealed it can have water pumped through it continually without difficulty isn't going to damage it unless something else is wrong.
All the amazing features of the car aside, The fact that you have to buy a software update to unlock something is already in the car raises a question: Who owns the car? You or volvo?
I'm pleasantly surprised that Polestar really is that good. I would prefer Polestar, Ioniq, or any other EV over Tesla right now. Happy to see you enjoy yourself this much Robert. You deserve it ♥️
I assume it doesn't have all the hardware for the pilot pack. What's probably missing is the high-performance compute module. That is probably the reason why without the pilot pack availability is so much better, as we are still in a chip shortage. It's the same with the VW Id-family - if you buy a model without driver assist features, you get it in a month, if you do want them you get your car... maybe end of next year or something.
"if you want [your phone] to barely charge but get really hot" Yep, that's been my experience with two wireless-charging phones and I stopped caring whether any future devices I buy have that "feature".
I've really been enjoying learning about the experiences of EVs and I definitely could live with one if the more affordable options had better than a 80 mile range.
I'm not sure what is "affordable" in your context, but the Hyundai Kona & its brother the Kia Niro are a lot cheaper than a Polestar/Tesla/Whatever and have a truly amazing range. Frankly, I'm not sure what kind of ancient magic Hyundai has discovered, if they slaughter a goat and perform a dark ritual every time a car rolls off the line, but those things go, and go, and go on a pretty moderately sized battery. And I personally drive an Opel Corsa EV (same car as the Peugeot 208 EV, just with a different body), which is again quite a bit cheaper. And while it doesn't have *great* rage I've taken it on multiple road trips without issue, and for daily use it's perfectly fine of course.
Im talking about options like the Leaf, 500e, i-mev or some the cars Robert has featured on his channel. The extreme winters where I live and 93 mile distance between my towns 1 charger and the next big city makes all of those choices good only as a 2nd car for me.

I completely agree with you about how mechanical simplicity is what makes EVs so great. As a matter of fact, I believe Polestar themselves suggested that this is among top reasons for their buyers based on polls. I wonder if you're teasing an electric Trabant at the end there. It would certainly do wonders for the Reliant though

I expect the cornering is helped by most of those 5000 pounds being very low down and generally towards the middle. Sounds like a great car! And, yeah, I bought a used 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV a few years (and, coincidentally, about 18,000 miles) ago, and getting an electric car has pretty much convinced me that it's the way to go. If you ever make it out to San Francisco, let me know and I'll let you give it a drive -- and I'll tell you how to pronounce it!
I've driven one of those quite a bit and it's a horrid thing, it being electric went some way to fixing that but still. I drove it when it was brand new and still hated it.
@@kristoffer3000 : I can see that. IMO, there's nothing wrong with them that buying one used for $4500 and having a commute that's perfectly suited to it doesn't fix, but they were quite overpriced new, and I do have approximately the perfect commute for it (about 10 minutes of highway with traffic, plus town streets). I also appreciate that it is precisely sufficient for the job, which is not to everyone's taste because it's another way of saying "quite bare-bones and minimal".
Next time you wanna film in the shade with a backlit sky get a few silvered reflectors (you get them cheap on amazon) and prop them up around the area pointing at the car. Love the shot composition, just lighting advice. White Thermocol works as a reflective surface in a pinch.
I remember seeing one of these on the road a few months ago and I had no idea what it was. It took me at least an hour to find it online, identified solely by the boxy taillight design in the back. I'd love to own one of these, maybe someday when availability is better...
I was so happy to see this car cameo in your earlier vids, I've been thinking for years that you deserve a really good car after all the rust bucket health hazards you've shown us all the years. I still miss your old Porsche 944 though...
The electrified future you're talking about is actually my present. I'm from Norway where 86% of all new cars sold this year are electric. Rapid charging stations delivering green electricity are basically everywhere and it's cheap... or it used to be before that russian dude started to mess with things.
I came across your channel from a link on Polestar Subreddit. I'm glad I took the time to watch. This was an entertaining watch. I like how you pointed out a few of the things lacking in the model 3, such as a glovebox latch or adjustable vents(without having to go thru dangerous while driving menus on screen and pinching and swiping nonsense). The biggest drawback to the tesla 3 and y is the lack of a windshield wiper stalk. This should be illegal. It's a large reason why I sold my y....and frankly don't miss the vehicle one bit.(also have an ioniq 5) I too am a Polestar Polestar 2 owner, and I love this car not only more than any other car I've owned, but more than any other product I've owned. I do have a couple of comments. You mention the infotainment is as good or better than Tesla's, and I'd say that fairly accurate, but I would leave out the "as good as" part(it is clearly better imo). After owning both cars for a while I'd say the Polestar's is definitely better. Tesla's is good, but Polestar's is better. With tesla, there is no "avoid hyways" feature in their maps which is crazy as every single satnav I've ever experienced since my first satnav about 15 years ago has this feature. Plus on the Polestar, with Google assistant you can find out useful information. Going to Ikea and running late? "Hey Google....what time does Ikea close?" And you get your answer. Can't do that on tesla. Numerous other infotainment superiority on Polestar but those are a couple of big ones. As for keeping the climate on when you get out. I'm quite sure you just have your passenger push the pause/play button as soon as you exit and it keeps everything going. I know for sure it keeps infotainment going and I'm 99% sure it keeps climate on as well. That sliding armrest? What the heck is that? It's so annoying. I think I'm going to figure out a way to stop it from sliding(maybe some epoxy or something in the mechanism). "Folding mirrors"?!? Ya right, useless. Small complaints tho really. I couldn't live without the pilot pack tho. Another reason I didn't like my Tesla was the lack of blind spot warning so the pilot pack was in unfortunate (unfortunate because it was expensive) necessity for my Polestar Polestar 2. I have also come to love my 360 camera on the pilot pack. The fancy cruise control and fog lights are not a massive deal to me tho. Anyway was a nice review. Thanks
So if both motors can be pushed to 170kW through software, that means you can probably pay them to get 340 instead of 300 with the dual motor? Edit: I guess that software update (when it drops) will do exactly that!
Thank you for mentioning the naming being just "2", I really hate how almost all of the "EV Brands" (specific electric brands from manufacturers) have just numbers as the model designations, with an EV brand prefix, ID, EV, e-tron, EQ, IONIQ, Polestar, Model (from Tesla), bZ, etc.
As a Volvo mechanic I work on these Polestars too. I know the secret code to have the ignition on when not in the seat. It requires the keyfob with buttons, a pedal and a hazard button. Well than you get key tag and NO Bueno. A but there is a different trick too that will have the ignition on and the handbrake off. So I love the Polestar 2 and wish I could afford one. But sadly I have to settle for a piece of junk of an elektric car, 40kw that you don't want to use because 20kw is eco. And you need to drive eco with 50-70km range. I'm slow as a semi. I miss my subaru but I'm not paying 2.5 euro a liter for high octane.
You can turn on preconditioning in the climate controls to keep the car cooled while not in the car. Also if the passenger touches the screen while its "off" the car turns back "on" and will turn the ac on
This is hilarious a year later, as here in Australia, Polestars are everywhere now. I live in a high average age area and yet there are three in my small town alone. A hospital I go to a lot has two in the staff parking lot and another four in the medical suites lot. It’s insane that these exploded onto the scene here so quickly.
Beyond Zero. 4 is the size I think and the X symbolizes it is a crossover, I think. Polestar is just going by the model number they produce. They're up to 6 now for upcoming cars. The next reveal is the Polestar 4.
I've got one in the same color, the only major differences is that I have Pilot (it was standard for my MY), and the fold away tow hook, which has been useful a few times. For the climate, you can either activate "parking climate" from a tab on the climate screen. You can also touch the touchscreen after the driver exits, and that will start it up again. First service interval is 20k, it's mainly the cabin air filter, and check fluids/wear parts. 3 years are bundled in with purchase, I actually just got home from that, and it was pretty uneventful.
Hadn’t seen one of these in a couple of months. And just as I’m telling my other half about this brilliant video and how much you rated the car, one pulls up next to us at a roundabout. One day, one day.

As a resident of Gothenburg Sweden (hometown of Volvo and Polestar HQ) I see Polestar 2's probably more often than a Model 3. At least 30 Polestar 2 a day.

One big reason why the polestar corners so well while weighing so much is the same across all EVs, they have a VERY low center of gravity, basically allowing them to feel like they're on tracks.
Also ohlins suspension and the fact that the suspension was tuned on the nurburgring, etc
@@Buick_GSX those will definitely have it feel a bit stiffer and better at cornering but the vast majority of the job is the battery

I've seen hundreds of videos on Polestars but this is the most entertaining one I've seen. Nice work.
I was at a Wendy's and behind one of these. "Wow, that's a nice Lincoln!" Pause. "Wait a minute. There's no exhaust. That's a Polestar!"

Mjolnir. You know. I don't like the idea of there being a paid OTA update to get better performance, like why not just give it as a free option on a $50K+ car that was designed for it, it's not like an aftermarket ECU reprogramming. (or the skeptic in me is saying they could've had the "update" ready long ago, and are squeezing extra cash out of their customers)
At least it's not BMW's monthly heated seat subscription I guess...

So nothing will really change. lol
hybrids are not the next step forward, and it's being proven today
This is an incredible script work. Amazing video!

@@bosstowndynamics5488 You know, or they just don't stand up well to extreme weather events?
@@Xatzimi Again, just flooding without other forms of damage should not damage the pack, it's sealed in the vast majority of EV designs. Half of them are water cooled, water on the outside of a system that's so well sealed it can have water pumped through it continually without difficulty isn't going to damage it unless something else is wrong.

Thanks
"This log is on fire."
10/10, best part of the video.
Robert... what a great video to promote EV technology. Love your humor and your fun videos. Congratulations on your new car.
Honestly the point you made about if EVs were norm and we tried to introduce ICEVs was something I weirdly never considered. It would be so silly.
I love how people with gas fetishes get so mad about EVs.
Also if the passenger touches the screen while its "off" the car turns back "on" and will turn the ac on
To activate AC when you aren’t in the car, go to the AC menu, then select parking. The option to activate AC is selectable when turn door is open
Have you considered buying the lane assist front bumper from another car to retrofit your current one? It seems like you can hack upgrade easily.
Doesn’t mean the software will let him
This is hilarious a year later, as here in Australia, Polestars are everywhere now. I live in a high average age area and yet there are three in my small town alone. A hospital I go to a lot has two in the staff parking lot and another four in the medical suites lot. It’s insane that these exploded onto the scene here so quickly.
Based on how poorly my Android smart TV aged, I will be staying away from any automobiles that run Android.
I have no problem with Polestar’s naming convention. Simple and memorable. Toyota named their new SUV BZ4X for chryste sake.
