Swathing? 🤔

  • ** Mike as finally arrived back up north where Ashtyn has been swathing. She is swathing down our canola up there because if not, the canola will shell out due to the variety that we grew. Swathing is another tool that can be used for "pre harvest" management. And as you can see, she loves it! 🙂

Mike, don't be sorry for the noise outside the cab. It comes through as music to me. Love the sound of a diesel running and fans blowing and pumps whining and hydraulics.

I used to love swathing, then we switched over to straight cutting canola. And i can confirm swathing in the rain, as long as it didn't rain too hard. I once swathed canola in a thunderstorm, was epic. Still miss that job.

I remember back in the 80s and 90s swathing canola in the rain. Could never swath cereals in the rain but with canola it works good. Canola cuts like butter wet or dry and you can actually go faster when raining/wet because it isn't as puffy and flows through the swather opening much better. I've never seen anyone swath canola without a roller though.

I just visited your website Mike. It says: "Mike is of the Mitchell fourth generation. He farms along side his two brothers, parents & their families."
Where's Ashtyn? Time to do an update ;-)

I am guessing the "& their families" unless you don't think she counts as Mike's family 😉

Is the long term plan to start your own farm in the north closer to ashtons family and move away from the main farm in the south.

Rolling a short crop like that won't do much...my canola is the same way. I have seen the odd time that rolled canola blew away worse than unrolled canola

I've got a question Mike ... how long will the crops stay on the ground before being harvested ...
I've got another question Mike ( sorry , I'm curious ) ... this year, crops were small ... this year, rain was tiny ... why not using stripper heads in front of the combine ( not talking about canola )
... it would allow to keep snow in the fields ...

For your first question the canola usually sits between 1 and 2 weeks

You need Ol Nick and Antoine from South Saskatchewan Farmer to bring the old gear over Swathers, Ol Sassy Massey n Deeres, and the pull behind Combines.I like old school equipment still does what it needs to for them, its waaaay undersized for your operation but man they'd look good doing it.
