New subscriber. You are doing great. If you are interested in any recommendations. There are some wonderful movies that few if any have reacted to. Happy to let you know about them.
I recommend reaching out to a friend or family member (or multiple) who is a movie buff. Get them to recommend movies that are well known but you haven't seen, like Forest Gump or Green Mile. Also try and get advice on movies that are less popular but would be to your tastes, (which I don't know, but for example if you liked comedies, Death at a Funeral (US) or Noises Off). Having well known movies brings in people to see how you react, and having movies that fit your interests lets your enthusiasm and commentary shine. The first brings in audience, and the second lets you stand out to that audience and from other reactors. Once you have established your audience (not just total subscribers but how many tune in), start running polls for movies with a mix of movies from both catagories. That way you have a rotation - popular movies, movies you think you'll want to see personally, and poll movies. I wish you all the luck, and yes, I did also subscribe.
Great reaction. The title of the movie refers to Red. Andy was innocent, he didn't need to be redeemed. What Andy did was to teach Red that as long as you are living there is always hope, and he can have a future.
The most amazing thing about this film is it wasn't really a box office success, but when it went to VHS Video rental the word got around and it became an utter cult classic watched by millions, it is one of the the greatest films of all time. Great reaction we could see you were genuinely moved by it. Incredible to think also that it was only a Steven King short story called Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption and became this epic film. A film of true hope conquers all, a beautiful ending on the beach after all they had been through with a glorious panoramic shot from above.
He didn't get the rock hammer to escape. He had been there two years before asking for the poster while Red was watching the movie. Red even told him to calm down because Andy was upset it would take so long to get it. That was when he decided to tunnel after trying to carve his name in the wall, and that is why he needed that poster.
@@CCC-rd3gc I don't know if they did. It sounded like they thought that Andy bought the rock hammer with a plan to escape in mind. He only thought about escaping when he was carving his name on the wall and saw how easy it was to dig into it. He was resigned to his situation before that.
Afternoon. Although set in Maine, the prison used was the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. The large main building and Cell Block 1 are now a Museum. They offer tours, can be used for special occasions, and offer overnight cell accommodations for the brave. ( haunted ) The street scenes were primarily N. Main St where the shop owners agreed to have their stores redone to fit the time period. Many still look the same. The halfway house is the Bissman Building, and still looks the same today. (It was a beer distributor, hence the name "Brewery") The store was the E and B Market on 4th Street which has been torn down. I was fortunate to be an extra con in the yard scenes. The premiere was held at Mansfield's Renaissance Theatre, a restored 1929 movie palace, before New York and Los Angeles. I volunteered working the theatre restoration. The prison was also used in the movie "Tango & Cash” and was the Russian cell block in "Airforce One". An interesting side note: In the bad winters, crows from 7 or 8 counties move into Mansfield by the hundreds due to large granaries that used to be between town and the prison. Brook's crow was a natural. The passage of time from the unfiltered Chesterfields to the filtered cigarettes offered Tommy by the warden, and the subtle aging of everyone is superb. Many people miss the subtlety of when Brooks left the prison, you see the prison through the gates, and when Red left you are looking forward over the fields toward the town. And they don't notice when the warden opens the Bible and finds the cut out, that it is the book of Exodus! I am 75 now with Parkinson's and don't get to attend movies very often. I enjoy the reaction videos on TH-cam.
I really appreciate you sharing your memories and knowledge about the film and its locations! It’s wonderful to hear from someone who has such a personal connection to it.

13:25 in the Stephen King novella Red is a redheaded Irishman. Freeman's line "Maybe it's because I'm Irish" is a clever reference to the source material.
The novella never mentions Red's real name, but in the film the parole board calls him Ellis Boyd Redding. So in the film, it appears Red is short for Redding.
This is one of my most favourite movies of all time. I love the line "get busy living, or get busy dying". There are others quotes in this that I love, but that is my favourite
One of my favorite little gems in this film is when Andy gets the beers for the crew, Red says they "sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders like we were free men". Then when Red is on the bus heading south, he says "It's the excitement only a free man can feel" while the sun is shining on his face and shoulder. Beautiful!
What an ending to an extraordinary movie!! I cry for.... - Red and Andy's true friendship - Red's speech at his parole board meeting, the one where he is paroled. He talks about wanting to back and 'talk some sense' to his younger self. -Red finding hope and forgiving himself Red's redemption. If you will. -The dedication of the film to Allen Greene. -All against the backdrop of the intensely expressive music. I get choked up by the music playing as Red goes to search for the "volcanic glass' Andy hid for him. The harmonica blended with the strings.... just so poignant and beautiful. I enjoyed your reaction. God's Peace to you and all here 🙏.
Thank you so much for sharing your insights!!! We appreciate that so much. And we're so happy you enjoyed our reaction! We hope you continue to enjoy our content :)
The movie wasn’t a box office flop. It only grossed 28 million in its initial release but grossed 45 million more after being nominated for an Oscar for a 73 million dollar box office on a 25 million dollar budget. It also didn’t find its wide audience due to vhs release. It was because the tv rights were sold to turner who put it on tbs and tnt 5 times a week for years.

Another BRILLIANT movie and I loved Morgan Freeman's narration throughout. Morgan Freeman's son Alfonso appeared in several scenes of the movie, including the picture next to the "rejected" stamp on the parole papers 🤩🍿🍦🥤
Hello. New subscriber here. I love this movie so TH-cam is always recommending me different reactions. I’m loving yours. You are calm, complement each other and pay attention. I’m glad you are enjoying this movie. I read the book way before watching the movie. In the book it says that Andy had up to 500 dollars hidden “down there” 😅. The book ends with the bus scene. We never find out if they find each other, but as I finished reading, first I was like “wait! Tell me what happens!” But then I Just felt it in my heart and the Words come out “I Hope they did” so I understood Stephen King’s decision to end it like that 💜
Great reaction you two! I think the best thing about this film is how prison can symbolize a lot of difficulties in life. Few people who watch this film have been in prison, but it can represent being trapped in some other way like a bad relationship or a terrible job. Life is difficult. We all need hope.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! You’ve captured the essence of the film beautifully. It's amazing how symbolism can resonate with our experiences in life.

Older guy here!I am one of the few who can say that I saw this in the theater. and old "Tag Line" on one of the posters/lobby cards was "Fear can hold you prisoner, Hope can set you free!" . Kristin is correct, Horror is Stephen King's "Bread and Butter" Stand by Me, The Green Mile and this movie show how good of a writer he is. Another story they made into a movie is Hearts In Atlantis ( book was way better) The movie Stars Anthony Hopkins and the late young actor Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Anton died in a freak accident. Hearts in Atlantis dealt with the CIA and KGB using psychics in the 1960's I will describe it as a coming of age film.
It's awesome to hear your perspective! Stephen King's storytelling truly spans genres, and it's fascinating how his works resonate differently through film and literature. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Fun fact Captain Hadley was played by Clancy Brown the voice actor for Mr Krabs in SpongeBob. Also fun fact the Miranda v Arizona case decision that made it mandatory for cops to read rights to people being arrested would have happened 3 months before the feds came for the captain and warden, which is why the cop is reading from a card instead of having it memorized like the cops of today
That's a fascinating connection! Clancy Brown's versatility as an actor is impressive, and the timing of the Miranda decision adds an interesting layer to the story. Thanks for sharing those insights!
I think you might be interested to know this. This movie is a literal adaptation of a novel by Stephen King (yes, that one). His novel was completely transferred to the screen.
When Andy asks Red why they call him that, his response is "Maybe I'm Irish. This is a reference to the book, Red is Irish in the book. The Redemption is about Red Retaining Hope.
Great reaction from both of you! One suggestion: maybe a little less "MMMMMM HHMMMmmmmmmmmm!" It just starts to get repetetive-sounding as time goes on, you know?
The filming location Brooks and Red's room in The Brewer is actually and somewhat ironically inside the prison. The location of the rock wall and Robert Frost tree (destroyed now by lightning) are near by, so is the cabin location where the infidelity takes place. Over half the prison you see in the movie has been torn down to make room for a new prison. And $370,000 1966 dollars today is $3,600,659.57
Since you enjoy this movie, if you haven’t seen the green mile, which is also Stephen King starring Tom Hanks is absolutely awesome. I would rank it right up there with Shawshank redemption. It has a tiny bit of a supernatural twist in it but well worth the watch. If you haven’t seen it I’d love to see you reaction video for that.
The movie was really about Red's redemption not Andy's, as you are lead to believe through the movie, until u realize he is innocent. Andy gives Red and the other inmates hope and the ability to be better men leaving the prison than what they were going in the prison system.
You make a great point! Red's journey of redemption is such a profound aspect of the story, and it’s fascinating to see how Andy plays a crucial role in that transformation.
The reason Morgan Freeman responds “Maybe it’s because I’m Irish” when asked why they call him Redd … in the novel this movie is based off, Redd’s character is a red-headed Irishman … This was a nod to the character in the novel.
Another ingredient that makes this film so good is Director Frank Darabont. Check out another top film directed by him, "The Green Mile" starring Tom Hanks which also takes place in a prison. Another awesome prison escape movie you should check out is "Escape from Alcatraz" starring Clint Eastwood. Based on true people & story. And finally, if you haven't seen "The Count of Monte Cristo" starring Jim Cavizel, & Guy Pierce, it's absolutely a top film as well.
Thanks so much for the compliment!! We've already reacted to Forrest Gump, but not The Green Mile yet. We're really excited to watch that one soon! Appreciate the suggestion!
Stephen King has an amazing mind. Y'all should dedicate one or a few SK's a month. There are so many out of character books and movies. Stand By Me, The Green Mile and Shawshank are absolutely not like Carrie and Christine which are scary but good. Gerald's Game is another off the wall but really good. The Good Marriage! Oohhh so many to choose from!
The original ending was a bit ambivalent as to whether Red would end up like Brooks or go to find Andy. But test audiences wanted a happy ending with the two friends face to face...The director really liked his original ending but studio heads put pressure on him until he relented and filmed the beach scene....but in subtle retaliation of sorts, he filmed the beach scene from way above, without any cliseups or face to face.
You make an excellent point! The contrast between the original and altered endings really highlights the creative tension between directors and studios. It’s fascinating how that choice impacts the overall emotional tone of the film!
I haven't read the essay by Pop Culture Detective, but I can image this movie probably made people more compassionate for inmates. At least thats how felt after watching this. Thanks for the comment!
Big fan of the book and the film. If I had a criticism, albeit small one, was that they didn't age Andy for the escape, bank and end boat scene. After 22+ years inside, he at least shouldn't look like a man in his early 30's.

Hey, thanks for the sub! We’re all about chill vibes here. Glad you liked our John Wick reaction we'll be reacting to the second one very soon! Thank you again for all the support!
Good start. You guys should check out only the brave. There is very few reviews of it. Great movie.
Will do! Never heard of this movie, but we'll check it out and add it to our watch list. Thank you for the compliment and recommendation!
Captain Hadley is the voice of Mr Krabs in Sponge Bob, just so you know!
I always put that fact in the comments when I watch people do reactions to this movie. Thanks for saving me the trouble.🙂
@@e.jamesshepard7183 LOL I do too!
omg that's so cool!!! I never would have guessed!
@@MovieNightReaction Yeah, look up Sponge Bob live read on TH-cam and you can see him being Krabs, it's priceless
The song being played during opening credits is, "If I Didn't Care" (1939) by The Ink Spots.
Oh thank you so much for letting us know! It’s a beautiful song 😊
It was also Fred Sanford's favorite song to sing in Sanford and Son. 😄
The warden was also the chief of police in the future scenes in the Demolition Man.
Regarding Red, in the original screenplay the character was Irish and they left the the line in ' Maybe it's because I'm Irish'
One of my favorite movies 💖
I can see why....it's an incredible film.
That wasn’t a maggot. That was a grub. Grubs live underground until they become adult beetles.
Maggots are fly larva and they live above ground.
Thank you for pointing that out! It's always great to have knowledgeable viewers like you who help keep the facts straight!
Andy was probably the most dangerous man in Shawshank.
The Redemption is about Red Retaining Hope.
oh wow! Thank you so much for that info!!! That is super cool how they tied that together :)
Great reaction from both of you! One suggestion: maybe a little less "MMMMMM HHMMMmmmmmmmmm!" It just starts to get repetetive-sounding as time goes on, you know?
OMG you're so right. I listened to it back and I was even annoyed with myself. I'll be more mindful in the future. Thank you!!! :)
And $370,000 1966 dollars today is $3,600,659.57
Great reaction
Next ones should be:
Schindler's List
The Pianist
Good Will Hunting
Thank you sooo much for these suggestions! We'll add them to the list! :)
This was a great reaction, you guys! Stephen King knows how to write relationships.💜💜💜💜
Thanks for the recommendation! The Green Mile is definitely on my watchlist now. I appreciate the insights!
Did you know the guard that almost threw Andy over the roof, is the voice of Mr. Crab on Sponge Bob 😮
we had no idea!! That is so cool!!!
Best movie ever...hands down!!!
The movie was really about Red's redemption not Andy's, as you are lead to believe through the movie, until u realize he is innocent. Andy gives Red and the other inmates hope and the ability to be better men leaving the prison than what they were going in the prison system.
You make a great point! Red's journey of redemption is such a profound aspect of the story, and it’s fascinating to see how Andy plays a crucial role in that transformation.
the warden is an all-time great movie villain
He did a great job!
One of the greatest movies of all time
Yes! This was such an amazing film.
Now you need to see "Count of Monte Cristo"
We're adding it to the list. Thanks for the suggestion
shawshank is a classic
Very true!
Love this K & J!
Check out any Quinton Tarrintino!
Highly recommend Django Unchained
We'll have to check that out!!!!!! Thank you so much for the suggestion!!!
Byron Hadleys actor also voices mr krabs from SpongeBob
OMG that is sooo cool!!!
The reason Morgan Freeman responds “Maybe it’s because I’m Irish” when asked why they call him Redd … in the novel this movie is based off, Redd’s character is a red-headed Irishman … This was a nod to the character in the novel.
Another great 'escape' movie is Room with Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay. Great one and very underrated.
We've never seen "Room" but heard it was good. We'll have to add it to our list! Thank you so much for the suggestion :)
Great reaction. Now you should watch "The Green Mile" and "Forrest Gump" The Green Mile is also written by the master of horror Stephen King
Thanks so much for the compliment!! We've already reacted to Forrest Gump, but not The Green Mile yet. We're really excited to watch that one soon! Appreciate the suggestion!
The rock hammer was hidden in the book of Exodus, the story of a people becoming free.
Wow, thank you so much for sharing that insight!! There is so much symbolism in this movie.
Captain Hadley in the movie is the voice of Mr Crab from Sponge Bob Square pants and Heywood is Death from Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey.
Small correction--Heywood is Death from Bill and Ted's BOGUS JOURNEY!
That is so cool!!! We had no idea!
Same writers directors producers and many actors also in Green Mile!
oh cool! we're actually recording that movie now! Can't wait for you to see our reaction! It should be out later this week.
The bible scene at the end with the pick is open to the book of Exodus.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I love the idea of dedicating time to explore his diverse works. There’s so much to uncover in his storytelling!
Just noticed one of the gang was Richie from Sopranos
oh cool! :)
The essay by Pop Culture Detective gives great insight as to why the movie flopped and how it influenced people's view on prison.
(My original 'fun fact' comment got removed, it might've gone to the check)
I haven't read the essay by Pop Culture Detective, but I can image this movie probably made people more compassionate for inmates. At least thats how felt after watching this. Thanks for the comment!
Fun fact the man in Morgans book the stamp is actually his real son!!!
"Not treating them like their humans"...it's prison sweetheart, you get treated how you treated others. Stop thinking prison life should be fair
It was released same time as pulp fiction, forest gump and speed sooo never stood a chance in theaters!
Such a great year for films!
I love this movie 😊
It's so incredible!
Did you know this was Morgan Freeman's first time doing narration? Turned into a lot more work for him.
Big fan of the book and the film. If I had a criticism, albeit small one, was that they didn't age Andy for the escape, bank and end boat scene. After 22+ years inside, he at least shouldn't look like a man in his early 30's.
