I must say, I like how you get the humor in the situation with his mom... So many reactors I've watched just... overreact and heck some even put that as part of their thumbnail and title. It's a joke, it's funny...

Agree that always annoys me that they clutch their pearls about “the incest storyline” but like she obviously can’t know he’s her son and Marty is definitely not into it but obviously can’t tell her

I love that you caught the Chuck Berry reference even before Marvin said it. A lot of young people miss it.
A fun fact is that, even though Chuck didn't record the song until 1958, he first wrote and performed it in 1955. He had to change some of the lyrics in order for the song to get recorded and sold. Initially, it was semi-autobiographical, about "a colored boy named Johnny B. Goode", but changed it to "country boy". The earlier version never would have made it onto the radio or record store shelves in those days

Now that's a great reaction. Look forward to Part II! A couple of things to keep in mind: It's not a Spielberg directed or written movie. Spielberg had more of a 'important contact in the industry, making sure the studio head behaved and didn't interfere" kind of role, while the creative credit belongs to Robert Zemeckis (director) and Bob Gale (co-writer with Zemeckis).
Also keep in mind, what we saw before Marty went back showed us how things would be if no time travel had taken place. Meaning, Goldie Wilson would still have become mayor, regardless of Marty's presence in the cafe. His positive reaction was simply to show that he naturally gravitated towards that idea, similar to how Lorraine had a positive reaction to the name Marty, simply because it's in her nature to have that preference.

Hi Jamil and Kristin, thank you so much for reacting to BTTF Part 1 and for your great reactions. Please watch Parts 2 & 3 as BTTF really is The Greatest Trilogy EVER, and from your reactions, you are going to love them, please don't leave it too long .... When George is up the tree, he is looking at Lorraine, who likes to show herself undressing at the window and she knows that boys watch her .... Hence her Dad saying 'Another one of these kid's' .. And at the beginning of the film when she asks George what he was doing up the tree, 'bird watching George,' just look at her facial expressions, she definitely knew what was happening .... In times gone by it was considered wrong to be 'Left handed' (The Latin word for Left is 'Sinister') and kid's would have there Left hand tied behind their backs and be forced to use their Right hand. This is why George tries to hit Biff with his Right hand/fist but then has to use his natural Left hand/fist to knock Biff out.
Just in case, a Spoiler alert, when you get to the end of 'BTTF Part Two' it will show 'TO BE CONCLUDED', it may be best to stop it there as it shows some bits of part three, which can spoil it for some people

Not a cult classic, it was a huge summer blockbuster. Cult movie implies that it didn't make a lot of money on release or has a small but passionate fan base. This movie was a pop culture touchstone.

Just putting it out there: a "cult classic" is a movie that's NOT so very popular amongst the larger, general audience but is VERY popular within a smaller, niche audience. Back to the Future is definitely not a "cult" classic - it's a hugely popular, full on classic.

Looking at my DVD shelf, Babylon 5 and the Guillermo del Toro Hellboys are cult classics. Star Trek V and Spaced Invaders are guilty pleasures. The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek II, and the original Star Wars trilogy are classics, no cult about it.

Born in 1950, the movie really brought back memories of what life was like, and just how much it had changed by 1985. (I think there were bigger changes in terms of social morals and lifestyle than between '85 and today. But these had come about with such glacial slowness, you don't notice them. So far me, I appreciate the way they contrasted the two eras and got every nuance right.
If I was to teach a class in recent American history, I'd show It's A Wonderful Life to give a sense of what it was like to live through all the changes from 1918 to 1946, this movie and Who Framed Roger Rabbit for the changes from WWII to our current way of life. Robert Zemeckis, who directed both this movie and Roger Rabbit, was away of how America had shifted from a downtown-centered life-style (including extensive use of trolleys) to the 1980's world where the downtowns are neglected (hence the porn theater, with other buildings in the 1985 world run-down or abandoned) as business and housing both moved to the suburbs as we became a car culture.

to answer the question about the DeLorean stalling: yes this was a common issue with the cars. Despite being very cool and unique, they were poorly built and plagued with issues. Johnny Carson famously had his break down while driving it off the car lot. The doors also used to get "frozen" shut because the support pumps used weren't designed to be expanded/retracted with the regular opening and closing of the doors. These are just a couple of the many issues lol.

Bob Gale, one of the writers and producers of the "Back to the Future" trilogy, has often mentioned that if they had known sequels were coming, they might not have included Jennifer in the DeLorean at the end of the first film. This was because it would have complicated the plot for future installments.

    • @homiedclown

Yep, the ending was just meant as a final gag for the film, with no sequel planned. They ended up regretting that gag, because it handcuffed them by limiting their choices when writing the sequel.

If you're going to watch the whole trilogy, here's a little advice. A lot of the humor in the third film hinges on having seen two other movies: "Time After Time" (1979) and "Goin' South" (1980"). You really should see those before you see "Back to the Future III". Without them, a lot of the jokes in BTTF III will just fly right over your heads. They're also very good films, well worth watching in their own right. I'm sure you'll enjoy both of them, whether you do them as reactions or not. :)

    • @MovieNightReaction

@@MovieNightReaction You're welcome! It's interesting to realize, when watching reactions, how many films contain references to other movies either in the scripts or in matters of tone and style. It really is all a continuum, and so much is unnoticed if the watcher is unaware of the earlier work. I put a lot of this down to the slow death of televison, myself. When we grew up with it, we had a working knowledge of earlier films because airing them was so much a part of TV. A lot of airtime was filled in with older movies, plus more recent films would get airings after their theater runs had finished in order to gain more revenue in the days before home video sales. So when a new movie came out that had some kind of continuity with an older one, most people would pick up on it. Now both TV and theater-going have slowly faded out, and along with the niche nature of internet viewing, a general sense of film isn't as common anymore. :)

Believe it or not, the ending of the movie was meant as a joke. There were no plans to do another film, they just thought it would be a funny way to end it. However, due to the absolutely insane popularity of the film a sequel became a no-brainer. So they decided to do a trilogy and wrote the next two films and then filmed both part 2 and part 3 at the same time. Because of this, theater audiences got to see a trailer for part 3 at the end of part 2.
Many reactors are told to stop the movie before the trailer (which is fine if you want to stay completely spoiler-free) but the trailer has ALWAYS been available to audiences of part 2. So if you decide to continue with the trilogy (HIGHLY recommended) you can decide if you want to experience what the original audiences did or if you want to go into part 3 sort of blind.

Hi. Don't mean to be a know-it-all, but I'll add my two cents anyway. You implied that Red the Bum is the former mayor. However, I read that the writer stated in an interview that they aren't meant to be the same person and the name "Red" for the bum was improvised by Michael J. Fox on the spot. Also, the photo of the mayor in 1955 on the side of the campaign van was that of set decorator Hal Gausman, whereas the bum was played by George "Buck" Flower. By the way, Flower was a cast member of the real-life film Orgy American Style (1973), whose title is seen on a theater marquis in BTTF!
