The original title by Stephen King was Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. He didn't start his tunnel until he got the Rita poster. The novella ends with Red (called thst because he was a red haired Irishman) reaching the border and thinking the narration about, "I hope." Frank Darabont adapted three Stephen King stories. This, The Green Mile (have tissues handy), and The Mist. All are great adaptations of King's work, though the ending to The Mist was changed. Based on your reactions here, The Mist might devastate you, as it is the one true horror film of the three.

Ok you said what luck it was a storm. Not luck, once he had the hole dug and everything planned out he simply waited for a stormy night. Then about the evidence you said how could they get him that easily. Andy sent the news all the records, it would not be hard to look at all the logs they kept and with Andy giving information, to get to the warden pretty easy. And how did he know where the hole went. Remember Any had access to the offices alone and a lot of freedom all around the jail , so as smart as he was he could've got to know the design and would have nothing to lose to try.

This movie was not about Andy's redemption; it was Red's. Andy was the redeemer who brought hope to the damned in that prison Hell, and he redeemed the only man to accept his guilt and repent. This movie is allegorical.
Would make sense if Red hadn't accepted his guilt and repented before the movie started. There's no arc there. His turning point is when he decides to get busy living instead of dying, as opposed to Brooks, and thanks to Andy. Religious messages are treated with a detached irony (e.g. salvation lies within), and this is established with the "Your ass belongs to me" in the beginning.
Andy was innocent, he didn't need to be redeemed. Red's the "only guilty man in Shawshank," and he's the one who keeps being asked by the parole board over and over whether he's been rehabilitated.
6:05 "What does that mean? Is it code or something?" What? There isn't any code here. An infirmary is a medical facility. Where infirm people go to be treated for their infirmity. "If I hear so much as a mouse fart, I swear by god and Sonny Jesus that you'll all visit the infirmary" is a flagrant threat to injure them all if they keep making noise. I imagine mouse farts are fairly quiet, so they better be quieter than that.

Is that a code for something?" He means that if anyone makes a peep the rest of the night, he swears on everything holy that everyone will be beaten like the guy on the floor, and will be going to the prison hospital.
It is more like a stretch they never switched Andy's cell in 19 years and that he was very lucky in the first place not be between 2 cells, he was right next to the main wall.
FYI - This movie originally ended with Red on the bus saying "I Hope". When first test-screened the audience didn't like the unresolved ending, so they had to go back and shoot the ending scene after the original movie was wrapped, I see both points of view. I think I'd prefer to end on "I hope" but how could I know after seeing the whole thing? And this movie also flopped because it came out against another behemoth (which took most of the awards): Forrest Gump. Great reaction, keep up the great work!
Honestly, I’m so glad they changed it. It would’ve felt so cheap for Andy to tell Red about the oak tree and Zihuatanejo, only for it to not be shown if Red even made it there. The movie’s message is built on Andy and Red’s friendship. It’s the crux of the film, and the big reunion at the end is absolutely essential for the ending to work.
I have always found this movie to be symbolic. Escape from Shawshank is akin to individuation. And it all starts with picking at a wall to etch your name ("who am I"). I love this movie.
In my opinion this film should have won the Oscar for best picture in 1994. That honor went to "Forrest Gump" I think that the Academy voted for "Forrest Gump" because it's more family friendly. It was a great year for movies as "Pulp Fiction" was also released that year.
The original story was Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption written by Stephen King, in a book of 4 short stories, each for a season. This was "Hope Springs Eternal". 3 of the 4 were made into movies, and the other beloved one was for the season of "fall from innocence." It was called "The Body" in the book and was called Stand By Me for the movie. A fantastic coming of age movie. I would recommend the book above all, but Stand By Me for your channel.

The most amazing thing about this film is it wasn't really a box office success, but when it went to VHS Video rental the word got around and it became an utter cult classic watched by millions, it is one of the the greatest films of all time. Great reaction we could see you were genuinely moved by it. Incredible to think also that it was only a Steven King short story called Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption and became this epic film. A film of true hope conquers all, a beautiful ending on the beach after all they had been through with a glorious panoramic shot from above.

The thing I like most about this movie is it is one of the rare films that centers around a friendship between two men. It doesn't have the cliche love interest thrown in to make it more viewer friendly. Also it is a Horror movie if you look at the fact it's about an innocent man being sentenced to life in prison. What's more horrific than that?

Morgan freeman's son is in this movie twice. Once as red's first mugshot photo, the other is his son saying "reeling 'em in, reeling' em in" when Andy gets introduced.
The powder they threw on the new prisoners was for killing lice. The prison authorities had to assume that at least some of the new guys had lice, and so everyone got de-loused.
You have some questions. My questions is how a suit worn by a man standing at 5' 7" fit so well on a man standing at 6' 3"? That and why did Andy leave the tool of his salvation in the mud instead of treasuring it or leaving it in the Bible for the warden to find? 😊
Hadley was getting the equivalent of $400,000 from his brother and he’s complaining. He acted as if buying a new car would take up all the money. He complained about paying taxes if he bought a new car. He would have paid sales taxes to purchase a car, but no additional taxes to own the car. A brand new car during that time would have been $1300 brand new. Hadley said his brother was an a-hole but that a-hole left him the equivalent of almost a half a million dollars yet he complains. So who’s the real a-hole?
After Andy became the Warden’s pet, I’m pretty sure he never got his cell tossed again, so they wouldn’t have found the hole behind the poster. If the tunnel didn’t go where it went, Andy would’ve gone a different way. All the things you find to be ‘luck’ are things that Andy had researched & planned. His real luck was being on the last cell. Go on TH-cam or Wikipedia & take a look at true cases of prison breaks. This is pretty tame compared to some of the crazy methods folks have used. If you put a person in a spot where all they have to think about is escaping, people can be pretty ingenious in getting out.
Andy was the most dangerous prisoner in Shawshank, and nobody realised it because of his demeanour. The documents were in the envelope that he asked the bank clerk to put in their outgoing mail.
The redemption was Red's, not Andy's. Andy was innocent and retained hope all along, while Red had lost hope and had it restored to him by Andy. It is also useful to remember that "Randall Stevens" was not a criminal and was able to migrate to Mexico quite legally. Hence also Andy could afford to take his time and go to Buxton to leave the box for Red before heading south. You can be sure that Andy would not have named Mr Stevens in the records he kept for the Warden (and sent to the press). Mr Stevens was simply making cash deposits into multiple accounts on a regular basis, and banks back then would have had no reason to be suspicious of this because that's what people routinely did. The only ones who could have implicated Mr Stevens as a co-offender were the Warden, who was dead, and Red, who would never have done so.
Oh, you could smoke in all prisons and jails at that time. Bans started taking effect in the 90's and 2000's. And the redemption wasn't Andy's as he never gave up hope. The redemption was Red's. Andy gave him hope and a reason to live. Also, Allen Greene, was Frank Darabont's former agent, who died during filming from AIDS.
I’m 56 & have never done ‘time,’ but I’ve spent a few weekends in jail, waiting for arraignment. In the 80’s & early-mid 90’s, almost everyone in jail smoked like a chimney🤣

The entire Brooks scene kills me.. the gaurds even tell him "goodluck Brooksie".. He went to prison when people were in horse and buggy and when he gets out in 1955 cars are wizzing by all day.. He looks so lost and scared😢😢😢
My theory regarding Red, Morgan Freeman's character is that he was deliberately saying the same thing over and over because he was scared of the outside world, that he himself, just as Brooks had become, was institutionalized, and it wasn't until Andy had his talk with him later that he decided to change his response at his next parole hearing. Andy had given him some extra hope, the very thing Red warned Andy against, but at that point it was too irresistible to ignore (Again, just a hunch) Took me several years to finally get this.
I don't think it was a conscious decision. I think it was a "I just don't give a sh-t about anything anymore". His friend was gone, life was drab, and there was no hope for it getting better.
I visited the former Ohio State Reformatory recently and got to go inside what is left of the prison. 2/3 of it has been torn down to make room for a new prison. I saw a handful of filming locations; the hallway in the administrative section and stairs where the warden offers to mail Andy's letters. The large shower room where Boggs offers Andy his "friendship". The warden's office. I was surprised to see that Brooks' and Red's room in the Brewer is actually located inside the front section of the OSR.
I love Andy because he is so selfless . He gets the beers to make friends and asks nothing in return , he plays that music to make everyone feel free and he helps Tommy so he can have a better life after prison . I also always cry when Brookes is feeding the birds and he says he hopes jake might show up 😢
Not allowed to smoke! lol. In 1947 you could smoke everywhere and most men and some women did. I remember being able to smoke on airplanes 50 years ago and when I visited my dad in the hospital in 1968 you could smoke in the waiting room.
I think what she meant was why he was allowed to smoke in prison... like it was some sort of privilege they would've been denied as part of their punishment. Thing is, back in those days, smoking was as much of a "human rights" issue as three meals a day!

Life beat me, I didn't quit. I find myself thinking "maybe tomorrow" a lot these days. Just as Scarlett O'Hara said "After all, Tomorrow IS another day!" And Chuck Noland, "And I know what I have to do now. I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?" That is the definition of hope. Not the knowledge that things WILL change... but the faith that things CAN change.

The script was named "Rita hayworth and the shawshank redemption" A bunch of people applied for the role of Rita Hayworth. They didn't read the script. This movie came out a year before I was born, but it's my favorite movie. I learned people didn't go to see it in theater cause the name was too long. Honestly.
He had the cell closest to the wall, so it was likely that his tunnel wouldn't go to another cell but either outside or to some utility part.Worst case, it would have been some kind of stairwell only used by the guards, but then he could have found out while still only having a tiny hole there - and as others pointed out, he'd probably have a general idea of the layout of the building. The odds that it's a stormy night are as high as he wants them to be, since he can choose which day he picks. If you want to nitpick, the pipe crawl is far less likely to happen - likely too little oxygen and too much other gases that would make you pass out in there, and that hole is not big enough to provide sufficient ventilation without installing a fan........
This is one of about a half-dozen movies that, depending on how the reaction goes, makes all the difference on whether I subscribe. I would've subscribed after this one, except for one big reason: I had already subscribed. Glad to be here.

12 Angry Men is amazing propaganda. Ahead of its time. The Oxbow Incident (also starring Henry Fonda) makes the same "point" but is much better at it, IMO.
I wasn't interested in this movie because I had a personal dislike for Tim Robbins. When I finally saw it I had a whole different perspective on Robbins and have seen this movie multiple times since.
This movie received no Oscars, losing out to Forrest Gump mainly. However, over the years, it's greatness has been realised and is generally recognised as one of the best movies of all time. Enjoyed your reaction, though you did miss many of the salient points for whatever reasons. I don't have the heart to be critical, I'll leave that to the 'less forgiving' types.
Though this movie is just a movie. There really was a prisoner who escaped The Shawshank prison he lived free for 56yrs. He was captured in Florida & returned to complete his sentence. Frank Freshwater escaped in 1959 & found in Florida in 2014. He was 73 yrs old when he was found. Now he will die in prison.
If you think this movie was good, two more for you to review are: The Green Mile (written by the same author as Shawshank, Stephen King, and also directed by the same director), and Forrest Gump. The powder they threw into the faces of the incoming prisoners is a delousing powder to get rid of any Lice they might be carrying.

Ive seen several prison break films .... escape Alcatraz being one of them....im sure andy did a trial run a few times just to see where the tunnel ended up before he decided to escape. He would go out survey the area and then come back to his cell.
Erin, you liked the soundtrack as Red discovered the wall and the tree. Did you notice the harmonica track? That was a brilliant inclusion by composer Thomas Newman and director Frank Darabont. Now, react to "Forrest Gump", "The Green Mile", "El Camino", "Saving Privat Ryan" and "Aliens"! To see Rita Hayworth do that "sh*t with her hair", watch "Gilda" (1946).
My favorite movie of all time, long before IMDB. On another note, the other 4 rounding out my top 5 are: #2: Fight Club #3: One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest #4: Goodfellas #5: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind I first fell in love with this film, watching TBS/TNT on cable tv in the mid 90s, which is what made its popularity soar. I really like how fast you picked up on clues. I have never seen anyone pick up the rock hammer was hidden in the Bible as the warden is holding the Bible. Another real good movie you might want to watch is Field of Dreams.
First of all, it’s a movie, so yeah, you have to stretch your imagination just a little bit for it to work…second of all the only reason he decided to start digging the hole in the first place was most likely because he knew where he was located in the building and knew he was at the end of a row of cells. And considering how smart he is, I’m sure he knew that it was gonna be a rainy night by word of mouth or a newspaper with the weather report in it. It’s in the 60s so They had weather reports. That’s probably why he chose to go that night. The poster not being checked is a pretty big stretch but if you figure this was some 60 years ago, so not as many crazy things like that had happened as they have now. As well as their egos are pretty big and they wouldn’t think that Andy could get something like that past them. So overall, I think it’s pretty smart writing actually.
4:32 "Why the powder? Is it some kind of cleaning thing?" I guess you could call it that. Right before they threw it on him the guard said "de-louse him." Lice have always been a problem in crowded living facilities, and a prison is definitely one of those. This powder kills lice. Both the hair kind of lice, and the lower kind of lice.
I had no idea how you could think it was a horror film other than it was based on a Stephen King book, which is fair enough. Despite writing in many genres, King is mostly known in the culture at large as a Horror writer. Only pedantic nerds like me know roughly half of his published titles don't strictly fall into the "Horror" genre.
As far as what he gave them. He kept 2 sets of books, one set of books was "laundered" for tax and auditor purposes. The other set of books showed reality, who paid what bribes and how much. And mailed the real books, plus eyewitness testimony as to the murders and abuses he witnessed. Andy is complicit in the financial crimes, and if the feds wanted to pursue warrants against him they could. But everything illegal that he did way forced on him by the warden.
Those in charge (Warden and Hatley) who are paid to look after the prisoners are at least as bad as the worst of those already incarcerated. Hatley, who doubles as a killer. Warden, an instigator and giver of orders for these, among other things, acts. Both carry “the word of God” in front of them like a shield. But talking doesn't mean being like that. Andy would only have been alive for hours after Warden's retirement. He is the only witness to Warden's actions and is therefore extremely dangerous. Another failed escape attempt would be the practical solution, and Andy would have a grave site. A brilliant film with brilliant actors.
The Shawshank Redemption picked a HORRIBLE month to be released and it wound up tanking at the box office. To add some perspective, SR was released in October 1994--along with Pulp Fiction, Jurassic Park, The Lion King, and Forrest Gump--all of which had significant marketing machines and star power behind them to get people to the theater. Shawshank didn't. Adding to that, in 1994, you always had to have a backup in mind just in case the show you wanted to see sold out. If you're with your friends or on a date, buckets of popcorn in hand, you aren't going to say "Ooooo! There's a PRISON movie that I've heard nothing about---let's check out THAT movie instead!". Luckily, it found a second life through rentals and it also got some pretty heavy play on cable tv too. There was a point where it felt like you could turn on the TV at any given time and find Shawshank playing.
I don't think I appreciated this movie enough b/c I had read the short story (by Stephen King in the collection "Different Seasons"). After I read a book and then they make a movie about it, It's always a letdown to me b/c there's only so much they can put in a movie and more times than not, they either change certain parts or leave some out. "The Shining" was the same way for me. Btw, I'm fairly certain that the reason people thought this was a horror movie, is b/c it was written by Stephen King.
If you want to see some more real awesome movies. One of them is castaway the other one is hotchie, a dog's tale another one is, it's a wonderful life. The black and white version. And another one is I robot. You won't be sorry you will love them
Interesting fact. The director bought the rights from Stephen King for just $5,000 because they are friends. But he did not even cash the check, but framed it and sent it back, writing "If you need money for collateral. Steve." And also - the film is exactly 30 years old :)
Shawshank didn’t tank but it was less successful due to the other movies it competed with. Delousing is a standard practice in any confinement. The product comes in powder form.

The powder that was thrown on the prisoners when they first got in is called a delousing powder. It kills lice.
It is more like a stretch they never switched Andy's cell in 19 years and that he was very lucky in the first place not be between 2 cells, he was right next to the main wall.
FYI - This movie originally ended with Red on the bus saying "I Hope".
When first test-screened the audience didn't like the unresolved ending, so they had to go back and shoot the ending scene after the original movie was wrapped, I see both points of view. I think I'd prefer to end on "I hope" but how could I know after seeing the whole thing?
And this movie also flopped because it came out against another behemoth (which took most of the awards): Forrest Gump.

Honestly, I’m so glad they changed it. It would’ve felt so cheap for Andy to tell Red about the oak tree and Zihuatanejo, only for it to not be shown if Red even made it there.
The movie’s message is built on Andy and Red’s friendship. It’s the crux of the film, and the big reunion at the end is absolutely essential for the ending to work.

I have always found this movie to be symbolic. Escape from Shawshank is akin to individuation. And it all starts with picking at a wall to etch your name ("who am I"). I love this movie.
In my opinion this film should have won the Oscar for best picture in 1994. That honor went to "Forrest Gump" I think that the Academy voted for "Forrest Gump" because it's more family friendly. It was a great year for movies as "Pulp Fiction" was also released that year.
The original story was Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption written by Stephen King, in a book of 4 short stories, each for a season. This was "Hope Springs Eternal". 3 of the 4 were made into movies, and the other beloved one was for the season of "fall from innocence." It was called "The Body" in the book and was called Stand By Me for the movie. A fantastic coming of age movie. I would recommend the book above all, but Stand By Me for your channel.

The most amazing thing about this film is it wasn't really a box office success, but when it went to VHS Video rental the word got around and it became an utter cult classic watched by millions, it is one of the the greatest films of all time. Great reaction we could see you were genuinely moved by it. Incredible to think also that it was only a Steven King short story called Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption and became this epic film. A film of true hope conquers all, a beautiful ending on the beach after all they had been through with a glorious panoramic shot from above.
She says at the end that the film was based off of a King novella. And the title of said novella is “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption,” no “the” in the title.
The thing I like most about this movie is it is one of the rare films that centers around a friendship between two men. It doesn't have the cliche love interest thrown in to make it more viewer friendly. Also it is a Horror movie if you look at the fact it's about an innocent man being sentenced to life in prison. What's more horrific than that?

Morgan freeman's son is in this movie twice.
Once as red's first mugshot photo, the other is his son saying "reeling 'em in, reeling' em in" when Andy gets introduced.
The powder they threw on the new prisoners was for killing lice. The prison authorities had to assume that at least some of the new guys had lice, and so everyone got de-loused.

Hadley was getting the equivalent of $400,000 from his brother and he’s complaining. He acted as if buying a new car would take up all the money. He complained about paying taxes if he bought a new car. He would have paid sales taxes to purchase a car, but no additional taxes to own the car. A brand new car during that time would have been $1300 brand new.
Hadley said his brother was an a-hole but that a-hole left him the equivalent of almost a half a million dollars yet he complains. So who’s the real a-hole?
He would have had to pay inheritance tax.

No the film does not begin in 1949 but actually starts 1947 as it was in 1949 when Andy asked Red for a poster of Rita Hayworth.
After Andy became the Warden’s pet, I’m pretty sure he never got his cell tossed again, so they wouldn’t have found the hole behind the poster.
If the tunnel didn’t go where it went, Andy would’ve gone a different way. All the things you find to be ‘luck’ are things that Andy had researched & planned. His real luck was being on the last cell.
Go on TH-cam or Wikipedia & take a look at true cases of prison breaks. This is pretty tame compared to some of the crazy methods folks have used. If you put a person in a spot where all they have to think about is escaping, people can be pretty ingenious in getting out.
Andy was the most dangerous prisoner in Shawshank, and nobody realised it because of his demeanour. The documents were in the envelope that he asked the bank clerk to put in their outgoing mail.
The redemption was Red's, not Andy's. Andy was innocent and retained hope all along, while Red had lost hope and had it restored to him by Andy.
It is also useful to remember that "Randall Stevens" was not a criminal and was able to migrate to Mexico quite legally. Hence also Andy could afford to take his time and go to Buxton to leave the box for Red before heading south. You can be sure that Andy would not have named Mr Stevens in the records he kept for the Warden (and sent to the press). Mr Stevens was simply making cash deposits into multiple accounts on a regular basis, and banks back then would have had no reason to be suspicious of this because that's what people routinely did. The only ones who could have implicated Mr Stevens as a co-offender were the Warden, who was dead, and Red, who would never have done so.

Oh, you could smoke in all prisons and jails at that time. Bans started taking effect in the 90's and 2000's. And the redemption wasn't Andy's as he never gave up hope. The redemption was Red's. Andy gave him hope and a reason to live. Also, Allen Greene, was Frank Darabont's former agent, who died during filming from AIDS.
I’m 56 & have never done ‘time,’ but I’ve spent a few weekends in jail, waiting for arraignment. In the 80’s & early-mid 90’s, almost everyone in jail smoked like a chimney🤣

The entire Brooks scene kills me.. the gaurds even tell him "goodluck Brooksie".. He went to prison when people were in horse and buggy and when he gets out in 1955 cars are wizzing by all day.. He looks so lost and scared😢😢😢
My theory regarding Red, Morgan Freeman's character is that he was deliberately saying the same thing over and over because he was scared of the outside world, that he himself, just as Brooks had become, was institutionalized, and it wasn't until Andy had his talk with him later that he decided to change his response at his next parole hearing. Andy had given him some extra hope, the very thing Red warned Andy against, but at that point it was too irresistible to ignore (Again, just a hunch) Took me several years to finally get this.
I don't think it was a conscious decision. I think it was a "I just don't give a sh-t about anything anymore". His friend was gone, life was drab, and there was no hope for it getting better.

I visited the former Ohio State Reformatory recently and got to go inside what is left of the prison. 2/3 of it has been torn down to make room for a new prison. I saw a handful of filming locations; the hallway in the administrative section and stairs where the warden offers to mail Andy's letters. The large shower room where Boggs offers Andy his "friendship". The warden's office. I was surprised to see that Brooks' and Red's room in the Brewer is actually located inside the front section of the OSR.
"visit the infirmary" means "go to the prison hospital". They will get beaten up.
I love Andy because he is so selfless . He gets the beers to make friends and asks nothing in return , he plays that music to make everyone feel free and he helps Tommy so he can have a better life after prison . I also always cry when Brookes is feeding the birds and he says he hopes jake might show up 😢

Not allowed to smoke! lol. In 1947 you could smoke everywhere and most men and some women did. I remember being able to smoke on airplanes 50 years ago and when I visited my dad in the hospital in 1968 you could smoke in the waiting room.
I think what she meant was why he was allowed to smoke in prison... like it was some sort of privilege they would've been denied as part of their punishment. Thing is, back in those days, smoking was as much of a "human rights" issue as three meals a day!

In real prisons they don't let you stay in one cell for the whole time. They move you every now and then to prevent this sort of thing happening.

Remember Andy was SO important to the laundering scheme he had some privileges. The warden once remarks about that "one room Hilton" and threatens to "cast him down with the sodomites!"

This movie came out a year before I was born, but it's my favorite movie. I learned people didn't go to see it in theater cause the name was too long. Honestly.
The picture on Red's file when he gets released is actually Morgan Freeman's son. Great film.
He had the cell closest to the wall, so it was likely that his tunnel wouldn't go to another cell but either outside or to some utility part.Worst case, it would have been some kind of stairwell only used by the guards, but then he could have found out while still only having a tiny hole there - and as others pointed out, he'd probably have a general idea of the layout of the building. The odds that it's a stormy night are as high as he wants them to be, since he can choose which day he picks.
If you want to nitpick, the pipe crawl is far less likely to happen - likely too little oxygen and too much other gases that would make you pass out in there, and that hole is not big enough to provide sufficient ventilation without installing a fan........
This is one of about a half-dozen movies that, depending on how the reaction goes, makes all the difference on whether I subscribe. I would've subscribed after this one, except for one big reason: I had already subscribed. Glad to be here.

12 Angry Men is amazing propaganda. Ahead of its time. The Oxbow Incident (also starring Henry Fonda) makes the same "point" but is much better at it, IMO.

I wasn't interested in this movie because I had a personal dislike for Tim Robbins. When I finally saw it I had a whole different perspective on Robbins and have seen this movie multiple times since.
He really gives a great performance in this!

This movie received no Oscars, losing out to Forrest Gump mainly. However, over the years, it's greatness has been realised and is generally recognised as one of the best movies of all time. Enjoyed your reaction, though you did miss many of the salient points for whatever reasons. I don't have the heart to be critical, I'll leave that to the 'less forgiving' types.
This is a fantastic movie, it's the best movie NEVER to win an Oscar, Morgan Freeman deserved one for the narration of this movie first and foremost.
This is on my list as #2 on my list of favorite movies, just behind Full Metal Jacket, but ahead of Forrest Gump. I watch it anytime it comes on TV.
Though this movie is just a movie. There really was a prisoner who escaped The Shawshank prison he lived free for 56yrs. He was captured in Florida & returned to complete his sentence. Frank Freshwater escaped in 1959 & found in Florida in 2014. He was 73 yrs old when he was found. Now he will die in prison.

Ive seen several prison break films .... escape Alcatraz being one of them....im sure andy did a trial run a few times just to see where the tunnel ended up before he decided to escape. He would go out survey the area and then come back to his cell.
Having pretty much free run of the prison he probably had access to the layout of the place, plumbing, electric etc.
I'm sure Red asked the locals if they knew where the white man was located.

I first fell in love with this film, watching TBS/TNT on cable tv in the mid 90s, which is what made its popularity soar. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to help in the original box office.

I really like how fast you picked up on clues. I have never seen anyone pick up the rock hammer was hidden in the Bible as the warden is holding the Bible. Another real good movie you might want to watch is Field of Dreams.
First of all, it’s a movie, so yeah, you have to stretch your imagination just a little bit for it to work…second of all the only reason he decided to start digging the hole in the first place was most likely because he knew where he was located in the building and knew he was at the end of a row of cells. And considering how smart he is, I’m sure he knew that it was gonna be a rainy night by word of mouth or a newspaper with the weather report in it. It’s in the 60s so They had weather reports. That’s probably why he chose to go that night. The poster not being checked is a pretty big stretch but if you figure this was some 60 years ago, so not as many crazy things like that had happened as they have now. As well as their egos are pretty big and they wouldn’t think that Andy could get something like that past them. So overall, I think it’s pretty smart writing actually.
I've never sat down and watched a "Toy Story" movie, but if it's similar to "The Shawshank Redemption" then I need to give it a shot.

I had no idea how you could think it was a horror film other than it was based on a Stephen King book, which is fair enough. Despite writing in many genres, King is mostly known in the culture at large as a Horror writer. Only pedantic nerds like me know roughly half of his published titles don't strictly fall into the "Horror" genre.
If someone knows nothing of the movie beforehand, why would it be surprising for them to have a wrong assumption about it?

He kept 2 sets of books, one set of books was "laundered" for tax and auditor purposes.
The other set of books showed reality, who paid what bribes and how much.
And mailed the real books, plus eyewitness testimony as to the murders and abuses he witnessed.
Andy is complicit in the financial crimes, and if the feds wanted to pursue warrants against him they could.
But everything illegal that he did way forced on him by the warden.

While Shawshank isn't a horror film, it was written by Stephen King, so that's understandable.
Those in charge (Warden and Hatley) who are paid to look after the prisoners are at least as bad as the worst of those already incarcerated. Hatley, who doubles as a killer. Warden, an instigator and giver of orders for these, among other things, acts. Both carry “the word of God” in front of them like a shield. But talking doesn't mean being like that. Andy would only have been alive for hours after Warden's retirement. He is the only witness to Warden's actions and is therefore extremely dangerous. Another failed escape attempt would be the practical solution, and Andy would have a grave site. A brilliant film with brilliant actors.
The Shawshank Redemption picked a HORRIBLE month to be released and it wound up tanking at the box office. To add some perspective, SR was released in October 1994--along with Pulp Fiction, Jurassic Park, The Lion King, and Forrest Gump--all of which had significant marketing machines and star power behind them to get people to the theater. Shawshank didn't. Adding to that, in 1994, you always had to have a backup in mind just in case the show you wanted to see sold out. If you're with your friends or on a date, buckets of popcorn in hand, you aren't going to say "Ooooo! There's a PRISON movie that I've heard nothing about---let's check out THAT movie instead!". Luckily, it found a second life through rentals and it also got some pretty heavy play on cable tv too. There was a point where it felt like you could turn on the TV at any given time and find Shawshank playing.

I don't think I appreciated this movie enough b/c I had read the short story (by Stephen King in the collection "Different Seasons"). After I read a book and then they make a movie about it, It's always a letdown to me b/c there's only so much they can put in a movie and more times than not, they either change certain parts or leave some out. "The Shining" was the same way for me. Btw, I'm fairly certain that the reason people thought this was a horror movie, is b/c it was written by Stephen King.
If you want to see some more real awesome movies. One of them is castaway the other one is hotchie, a dog's tale another one is, it's a wonderful life. The black and white version.

Interesting fact. The director bought the rights from Stephen King for just $5,000 because they are friends. But he did not even cash the check, but framed it and sent it back, writing "If you need money for collateral. Steve."
