Never heard of a dry flake gun before but it definitely looks like a really great alternative for me whenever I'm asked to do a flake or heavy metallic finish for one of my guitars. I usually groan inwardly when a customer wants flake/metallics as I just know how much of a pain in the hole it is when it comes to cleaning the gun and pots out after. Keeping the flake separate from my clear gun sounds like a gamechanger for me. Thanks for this clip!
Hi Tony I have a old ranger bass boat and the metal flake is faded and and in a lot of places down to the base flat color with no flakes over it . Does the gun you are using have a size of metal flake setting ? The flakes I have are 0.4 mm .
I justvstarted using an architectural coating that is very expensive,.(so I try not to make ANY MISTAKES)I use a 1.2 mm tip,.. no base coat, as the primer is epoxy,. but the topcoat is a 3 part,.. the paint dries rather fast,. and than its baked at 180⁰ ,do u have any tips to get a wet coat, without any of these miniscule flakes sagging,.. all metal is hung vertically,.. i tried to do multiple coats, low fluid, high air,.. a few came out great,.. but they reccomend applying 2wet coats,.. which DONT WORK due to sagging ,.. any tips on how to dial this in correctly, so I get no orange peel,or sagging,.. or any suggestions on how to adjust reducer with different temperatures,.. some days are dry,nice,.. others hot and sticky,. and sometimes 100% humidity . im a pretty good hvlp sprayer,.. but the booth, and fine flake architectural coating is all new to me
I tried it your way with using the clear coat to shoot the flakes into. It used a lot of flakes to cover one guitar and made a huge mess. I wonder if using the flake king binder (fk 50 I think) would make things go better. The guitar is looking great, though!
Hi I live in Kenya. I am not sure if we can get the dry flakes in different colours here But if possible where can I get the dry or wet flakes from abroad
Bro thank you so much for posting this i ordered a complete flake king kit i have ben spraying flake in my clear and its a pain to clean up. It was a bit expensive being over 200 dollars but its definitely better than cleaning stuck flake on the floor 🤣
Hey Tony I have been searching for weeks for this color. Is it a straight metal flake clear coat? Black or gold base coat. I'm new to airbrushing and learning so much. Thank you. Where can I get this color. All tropical flake or no?
Hi what lacquer do you use for the flake I currently use quartz liquid glass but am finding it dose not like to be applied heavy and I get bad solvent pop also trying flow coat and get solvent pop every time I try it pmp supplies said you was the best one to ask and maybe recommend something they do. Thanks Jon
Jon Taylor ho Jon you want a cheaper ms clear to put the initial build on woth to cover the flake then let it dry sand it back and flow coat it with a uhs clear , uhs clears done like to be applied really heavy mate , kronox 610 is good as a uhs clear but again one fine coat one wet coat don’t overload it
@@TonysRefinishingTV ok thanks for that out of the robelo and quartz which is best in your opinion and also would you use the ms clear if your going to flow coat any job or ms just for the flake. Thanks for the reply
That’s a great video, thanks for posting. The timing is perfect as I’m just waiting delivery of the airbrush version of the Flake King. I’m only a hobbiest so I think it’ll be big enough for my needs. I’ve now subbed and will be checking out your other videos.
I've never used metal flake dry, what is like dry for a full respray,? For the stock car racing.? Usually the primer gun with binder or clear and flake, pressure up a bit .Gun an Extra 25mm back, go for even coats, then clear coat lacquer, ¾ coat then full coat.. Bake, Sand, Flo Coat or stock car ¾ coat 2 full coats Bake.... done
What an awesome job! I want to get into painting so bad. I’m obsessed with heavy metal flake I’d love to paint my Harley with it. I need to get a list together for guns and paint and such. Gonna have some time on my hands with this quarantine nonsense lol
Colored flake on colored paint is a fave. Been learning much about various sorts. Want to learn more b4 i go purchasing a bunch of equipment and destroying it on a couple of gas tanks.
What's the largest size metal flake you can use with this Flake King gun? I want to use a monster flake (0.25 particle size), but there is no information on the product page regarding max flake size. Thanks in advance.
Hey Tony, hope things are improving for you since our last chat, I know this is an old vid but wanted to ask about the flow coat, looked like you gave it one light coat then two heavier ones, is this the norm for you when flow coating, I just do the same as when clearing over base, with the 610 I give it two good coats then the same when flow coating, anyway great finish maybe one day I'll get something close to that!
thanks fella, with flow coats as in the name the clear flows alot faster so somtimes going really wet on the first coat can run so one light coat as a grip coat then smash it on its just a safer way to do it
Ok thanks Tony, with the flow coat I don't have any problems giving it a good wet first coat but sometimes get a run in the second coat, is this because the first isn't cured and having the first coat to wet?
@@JohnWD40TC02 its the age old problem of physics mate tbh gravity lol. so you do teo wet coats to close together ie before the second has flashed off enough and then you have one thick wet layer that can move, the weight of the second coat combined with the first still to wet coat will run gravitys a bitch , so i always say the more coats you add the longer you leave it between each to give each more time than the last to flash off as it builds in thickness. hence i always try to teach in my courses more finer coats over a longer time so say 15 mins between coats, is better than two heavier coats back to back, same result just in a safer more controlled way
Love your videos. I learned a few things here. This is more my size of project. I build and spray guitars, as a weekend warrior. Not pro. Some conventional wood or auto finishes, and some wilder stuff like candies, chromes, colour-shifting paints, etc. I'd love to see anything involving these sort of finishes. My limitation is about 6 CFMs from a woodshop compressor. So your guns don't mean much to me. I need to use LVLP or touch-up guns. Oh well. Thanks for the 'training' Tony. Much appreciated.

Tonys_Refinishing Thanks Tony I’ll give a shoutout on the forum, my be lucky this time :-) keep a good work. I already bought compressor and that cheap HVLP gun, gonna start shooting lying bastards 🤣.
Not enough clear over then and cheap flakes usually , if you sand to the point your sanding the flakes then it will take the colour off the flakes if there cheap flakes so something nice looking will all end up looking silver

There good for small stuff like that mate yeah but no good for something car size ect
How soon after do you apply the dry flake? what is your preferred wait time or just shoot right away after applying a clear coat?
4 years later, I'm watching this because I want to dry flake my car with black glitter. Thanks! Good explaination!
Beautiful .! Y'all make it look so easy . A nice booth n equipment with plenty of room makes a huge difference , my little garage is a chore .
Thanks thomas and yes having the right kit does make this job easier

What psi are you just spraying the clear at? Does it change when spraying the flake already mixed in?
No I’d keep the psi the same so it’s got a nice even fan mate and most guns I run at 2.0 bar 30 psi for clear
Bro thank you so much for posting this i ordered a complete flake king kit i have ben spraying flake in my clear and its a pain to clean up. It was a bit expensive being over 200 dollars but its definitely better than cleaning stuck flake on the floor 🤣
Hi Tony lovely job you've done again, do you still use the quartz lacquer or do you prefer the roberlo?
Honestly I’m preferring the roberlo atm mate bakes a lot faster than the liquid glass and polishable straight from bake
Hey Tony I have been searching for weeks for this color. Is it a straight metal flake clear coat? Black or gold base coat. I'm new to airbrushing and learning so much. Thank you. Where can I get this color. All tropical flake or no?
Searching for years aye?
Is it ok to apply metallic flakes and flow coat the doors and bumpers off the car ?
Ideally when it comes to flake you’d want to flake everything at the same time and if you can all in one piece so the lay down is perfectly even
@@TonysRefinishingTV ok bro thanks for the advice
Nice job, what clear/reducer did you use that let you smash it on without solvent pop? What kinda temps in your booth? Anyway great job!
Biggest thing for not getting solvent pop was no thinners and not baking it mate I used kronox 610 for the first and second stage and left to airdry

these were from www.tropicalglitz.net/ every tub sold helps to raise money for the owners suns treatment too
Doesn't this way uses a lot more material blowing it everywhere and blowing loose flakes off before coating again?
Just a question, what size jars does it take?
Not 100% sure what size they are mate I’d say they would hold around 300ml of flake
