  • Part TWO of our Pacific Crossing video series. This episode begins on Day 7 of our crossing about 500mi into our journey. We celebrate Rob's 50th Birthday and Cross the Equator on the same day. The entire crew becomes Shellbacks. Rob is worried about our fuel consumption thus far in our journey and makes the executive decision to stop in the Galapagos to take on more fuel. We have to run our generator in order to make water and this was Robs biggest concern. Rob consulted with an advisor and he was told that "no problem to stop only for fuel" but once we anchored and boarded by officials we quickly found out this was not the case. Lessons learned - just figure in a stop to the Galapagos for rest and to reprovision with food and fuel prior to the 2,900nm journey to the French Polynesia.
    Follow our families journey as we plan to Circumnavigate the Globe in 3-4 years on a budget of $4,300/mo. We left the US in October 2023 and plan to visit 26 countries and 6 continents.

    So, how does Davis not appreciate ANYTHING about this journey when he is the child of two parents who essentially appreciate EVERYTHING. I've created a drinking game where I take a shot every time Davis is underwhelmed with something. Im now an alcoholic....Thank you Davis!

      Ugh, Davis. We took our family on our first sailboat to the Bahamas and our oldest, 16yr at the time hated it and refused to get off the boat. He is now 22yr and admits how stupid he was for not appreciating the experience. I’m documenting this so he can see later on and come to experience and see the sacrifices mom & dad made to show him the world.
      We show him these comments and us starting to appreciate things more. He often doesn’t want to be filmed so you do t get to see those special moments. Thanks for your comment!!

      We wanted to document our adventure to look back on when it's done, but we do see the value it has brought to others who want to follow a similar path. It's a great feeling to know that others are gaining insight into this cruising world though our experience.

    Guys you are in the deep blue ocean now and as you can see it now gets serious for you all, safety is paramount. Davis will appreciate what sacrifices you have both made by the time you get to French Polynesia. Happy Birthday Rob 🎉🎂 The Galapagos Islands unfortunately only cater for the exclusive charter ships, Zatara, Parlay Revival and Noah did not stay las the mooring costs and restrictions. Take care be safe and God Bless you “Shellbacks” 👍😇🙏⛵️

    Oh the swollen hands and feet are the worst! I try to walk and move as much as I can, but it doesn’t seem to help. Thankfully it seems to go away once the passage is done, but stiff, swollen fingers really suck!

    I know this vid is not in real time, so this is a generalized suggesting. Unless you watch your weather windows and trade winds before you set off, as well as during the sail, and sit tight to wait for the winds to come back.... and.... unless you sail and not motor, this circumnavigation will cost you a bloody fortune. Also, your sailing can save you money on motor maintenance and replacements and the cost of such will aid to the short budget you place on this trip. Save the fuel to motor to the tradewinds, but then shut them down.

    • @SailingParadiseFalls
      @SailingParadiseFalls  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The weather has been nothing short of wonky this season. What is supposed to be a "milk run" is nothing close. Forecasts have been off, wind shifts not happening and the initial push from the Caribbean sea over Panama has been all but not there. Weather forecasts had us sitting in Panama for a month waiting, in what should have been the prime month for starting a Pacific crossing. TONS of boats did the same as us, choosing to motor to get toward the Galapagos. Yes, it's going to be more expensive, but since we are at sea, our grocery budget, entertainment and food budget for the month goes to fuel. We would much rather sail. This boat sails much faster than the motors can push it. Plus it's so nice in moderate winds, as the boat glides quietly through the water. In the end though, we have to be out of the cyclone area by December 1. Which means we have to move, even when conditions are not perfect. We appreciate your comments and Thanks for following our journey.

    How much would it have cost you to get off your boat in the Galapagos,? Thanks for explaining the star link thanks for making the videos and sharing the reality not glorifying passage, I too, would be terrified of those dark night shifts

      Hi! Just to bring your boat in is around $2,800 plus you have to have it fumigated in Panama and hull cleaned to their standards. Lots of limitations with anchoring, cant swim or snorkel off your boat, can’t drop your dingy & must use their water taxis, only diving & snorkeling with their vendors. In total between $4,000-$5,000.

      It definitely is worth it! For my birthday I asked Rob for 4hrs of internet and it seriously helped my mood. It’s also great to stay in contact with friends & family & buddy boats! It’s not unlimited at sea & costly but definitely worth it!

      We were not going to get it but it is Worth Every Penny. You pay for internet access at home to the tune of 50-80 bucks a month. We payed for Regional mobile out of the USA for $150 per month. It's double the price, but we have connection where ever we go...near land. Once on the water, yes costs do climb. You can limit those costs by not using much data while at sea. The initial cost of about $600 is because you are buying the equipment, not leasing it from the internet company. The other option to have the ability to get weather files and email (no streaming internet or google search etc) is for an iridum satellite connection. That cost is 2k without the hard installation kit, plus $100 a month for 25 MB. We pay $200 for global roam, and get unlimited usage for near land and $2 a gig on the ocean. It's not hard to see why we would get Starlink. We have a $35 a month sat communication tool in the Garmin INreach in case of emergencies as well. Thanks for following our journey!!

    Thanks for another video "Shellbacks".......your boat issue and needing fuel is what one needs to do to keep family safe on a passage of this magnitude. You are crossing the largest ocean known to man that consumes 40% of the earths surface. .....I'm sure that the money you spent will contribute to the well being of the people of the Galápagos Islands and of course support the working of the French Government. I for one would have done the same thing under the circumstances as explained, but like @Stephanieparent posted; maybe some finer details such as......Rob in his "tighty whities" is TMI for your videos 🤣 Thus not offending armchair sailors and Monday morning quarter backs. Travel safe!

    • @SailingParadiseFalls
      @SailingParadiseFalls  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for insight! It was a very tough call but ultimately Rob made the decision based on the need to make water and God forbid happen to the mast or sails and we had to motor.
      We are happy that you saw our rationale and didn’t take us over the coals. In the end, we sought counsel from an advisor who did not give us correct information upfront. Sorry about the TMI, that’s just me😊

      No, we don't want to harm them, just want them not to poop on the deck!!! Plus, fire arms (Even BBguns) are mostly illegal in the countries that are normally visited in a circumnavigation. Great question! Thanks for following our journey!!

      @@SailingParadiseFalls Ya being a tourist is not something I like to do. When I travel I like to be the opposite of a tourist and see the real places I visit, on my own time and in my own ways. Being pushed around on someone else's schedule just doesn't sit well with me. But as I always say, Im glad those places are around....it keeps the masses in one place while I go elsewhere. LOL

    • @TG-xo1uj
      @TG-xo1uj หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sanyaomerovic1659 Its actually a very busy area with tourist, the only difference is they use their bureaucratic methods to simply extort way more money from you under the guise of eco concerns. Then control your every movement while being there. You leave with a few pictures and a wiped out bank account and its far from pristine with more than 8 tons of plastic removed from the islands every year from global pollution, not from the tourist who visit.

      So here’s the thing, running low on fuel is a legitimate emergency at sea, maritime law allows seafarers to enter any port if they’re experiencing problems.
      Although I agree with what they’ve done to keep the place pristine, using those types or excuses to get money from seafarers is definitely not cool behaviour.

    So much to say here. But I will spare you my thoughts on much of it. But I am absolutely gobsmacked that you chose to LIE to the government in the Galápagos Islands, about why you were stopping over there.
    In all of our years, watching other sailing channels, NEVER have I seen a boat fabricate a story, to utilize services in another country. Not only did you deceive them, you then complained about the fees and procedure you were required to follow because of your lie in this video.
    Watched you guys every week, but this was tacky and disappointing.
    Just wow.

    • @SailingParadiseFalls
      @SailingParadiseFalls  หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      If you go to 18 min in the video, we go through what happened. Basically, if you need to stop for fuel, you have to hire an Agent to communicate on your behalf with the authorities. It was the agent that advised us (once we were already at anchor) that we needed to tell them we had mechanical issues in addition to needing fuel. Apparently, deceivious cruisers and sailors have been using the fuel stop provisions to skirt the entry requirements into the archipelago. They are supposed to have cleaned bottoms, fumigated interior and other requirements that drive the costs to visit. So, people declare that they need fuel, pull in, grab fuel and then proceed to go to shore and explore and even visit other parts of the archipelago, using the guise of a fuel stop. So, apparently they are trying to crack down on this behavior and want vessels to need more then just fuel if they are going to do a "stop and go." We were never advised of this beforehand. The cost involved were not bad for the entry itself. What drove the costs was the near $500 agent fee and $6.50 per gallon fuel. Had we known we'd burn 90 gallons of fuel just to get near the Galapagos, we would have taken on more fuel in Panama for a fraction of the price and not had to bother with all the hassle and extra expenses. My thing is that the agent knew this going in and didn't bother to let us know until after we deviated course for 2 days and arrived to the port. We did follow all their rules including departing as soon as "repair" and fueling were completed. We were anchor down for less than 8 hours and only the Capt neas allowed to shore to get the necessary cash for the fees and fuel (they would not accept cc). We left and didn't stop at any other island.
      Our intention was not to stop, but weather caused us to burn so much that for the safety of the crew, Rob wanted to make sure that we would not run out of fuel on the crossing. We cannot make fresh water without using our generator and that could be disasterous if we had no drinking water. Thanks for your comment. We appreciate all feedback!

      Maybe just not air it on TH-cam when you have to do something like this? I was thinking what if you wanted to eventually go to the Galápagos Islands one day, and then someone informs the GI government of the video, which is now forever on the internet…I am sure someone there could make your life hell. And imagine the fines or prosecution that could arise.
      I understand having to deal with policies and regulations in whatever way necessary…but I would not recommend creating a permanent timestamp that doesn’t go away, even if the video is removed, edited and reuploaded.
