My husband went to Benning for bct. I'll never forget his DS, because they knew me by name. I was extremely sick, and 9 months pregnant. DS Mahl made sure my husband was able to call me, to check on me and our son, ALMOST every day, until I gave birth.
When I went for family day, I recognized him. He was helping everyone get to their proper seats. Asked me for my last name, told him, he all he did was grin and say "It's so nice to finally meet you".
That man will always have my utmost respect.

Because obviously he and his drill engaged in clandestine homosexual activities. Wherein his drill displayed the compassion he so admires and longs for today.

My Drill Sergeants were two of the best people I have ever met. Amazing leaders, teachers, and people. They were hard on us of course, but were so dedicated to training us well. One of my Drill Sergeants wound up in the same unit as me in South Korea, so it was cool to see him again away from the bct environment.

Army DS is polite compared to Marine DI. When I joined the Navy, we had Company Commanders. Ours was an old salt E-9 preparing to assume the post as command master chief of RTC. He didn't yell much but he had a way of leading us to where if we upset him we'd feel lower than dirt. We had tremendous respect for him. Never saw him again... I'm sure he retired not long after he was done with us. I cannot imagine a boot camp experience that was easier than mine...

  • @chuckwagg

@clamobin lol 20km converted is just slightly less than 12 1/2 miles. It was only 20km on paper. When we were done with it our drill sergeant told us it was actually a little more than 25km which is slightly more than 15 1/2 miles. Tack on all those great Ft. Knox hills and it made for a pretty good time.

The thing is growing up i was very rebellious towards them and disrespectful, now that ive matured a little ive started listening to them and having a great deal of respect towars them. They've given me my wings and now im ready to use them, the parental respect you have for your elders is a great stepping stone in character and joining the army will further strengthen your character and help you reach a higher sense of self worth.

I've went through Paris island as a recruit (didn't graduate) and is now going into the Army. Drill Instructors are tough but I can't really say whose better until I go through Army boot camp. I'm still young so after some 3 years with the Army I'm going back into the Marines for a second try. I still went to be a Marine but for now I'm going to be a soldier. Can't wait to ship to Army BCT.

I don't know how things go in the Marine Corp. or other branches. But I remembered when one Army Drill Sergeant was transferred into a regular unit after he was done drilling, he seemed to attempt on doing his absolute best on trying to be everyone's friend. Maybe not every Drill Instructor is like that of course. But he seemed to want to make efforts on being nice. I often wondered if it was because of the way he treated many of us during basic training. Or trying to establish some type of damage control of not wanting to face some type of possible retaliation? Overall things were good. Discipline is an absolute requirement in all branches of service. There were no hard feelings in the long run. But it almost seemed funny the way he was going out of his way on trying to make us all seem like he was one of the guys.

I was a Drill Sergeant from 1976 to 1983 the Drill Sergeant Program was strictly voluntary. You would apply, 3 in 10 were rejected and 1 in 3 graduated. We were the elite of the Corps of NCO's and proud of our Drill Sergeant Duties. Time on the trail was a honor, not a burden. My son went into the Army, I was disgusted with the shortness of professionalism and quality of today's conscripted Drill Sergeant.

I became disgusted with the Drill Sergeant Program when the standards were lowered in order for the conscripts to graduate. That is probably the main reason I left the Army as a E-7 after 12 years.

@BeAsTm0aD They give everyone who needs glasses the same frames though with different lenses of course depending on each person. My father (who went through BCT in 1978) had the same exact style of "BCGs" (birth control glasses) that the recruits of today are wearing... When I went through last year I had to wear the glasses and when graduation came along my father brought his old pair with him and we took a photo together with our matching frames. It was a riot!

@afterapplepicking MRE's are like any other food...some people like them, some can't stand them. I remember making "ranger pudding" with the cocoa and coffee creamer packets. It was pretty good chow in the field. I ate them when I was in the military many years ago and I'd still like to get some for my nephews to try, but I haven't gotten around to it.

Good video. 30 Oct 09 Grad of Ft Knox, and have friends who are Drill Sgts. What they do is second to none in the Army. By the way, comparing BCT to Marine Recruit Training is comparing apples to oranges. The Army and Marines are different branches of service. Although an Army Reservist my hats of to our Marines, Semper Fi. To my Army Battles, Hooah!

@Delta0prative It's none taken. As a soldier I can tell you the Marines are taking different types at times and your respective requirements are tougher for that purpose. No matter how many changes Army may make, at heart its more a job program whereas Marines are by nature riflemen and hammered to be warriors. But for the record, as a jonny-come-lately, I could not have done what my many younger soldiers went through in my BCT.

I've Got 1 more years to join Us Army in the basic Training. I'm 17 going to be 18 in November 10,1999.
One of my recruiter want me to sign the contract next Tuesday they said it makes it easier. So my parents are gonna sign. Once I turn 18 and finish my school I'm off to US Army. 2018.

I was a Drill Sergeant at Ft. Sill 90-92... Another commentor on this video said this and I'll back it up.

Deep down, drill sergeants deeply care about and understand what their recruits are going through because they were recruits at one point in their careers."
During Drill sergeant Schools we were doing grass drills which for those that don't know are very physically intense exercises designed to beat you down quickly... The Drill Sergeant instructing us said that we as seasoned soldiers were out of gas in just a few minutes... keep this in mind when you want to keep your Joes down for longer than that as they are not seasoned yet. We know what you can take from being there ourselves....

That seems like a good DS. Our DS sucked. 2 of them left halfway through, one left for a good two weeks leaving us with one who didnt really care because he was getting deployed soon. And he said he didnt care, so im not assuming.
